Sharks Sign Ward To Three-Year Deal

News: Joel Ward signed a three-year, $9.825 million contract with the Sharks on Friday, CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz reports.
Analysis: After the Capitals replaced him with Justin Williams on the first day of free agency, Joel Ward ended up finding a home on the West Coast, where he'll join a veteran forward corps. Ward skated primarily on the third line with the Capitals in 2014-15, notching 19 goals and 34 points in 82 games. Historically, Ward has saved his best work for the postseason (14 goals, 21 assists in 53 playoff games), where the Sharks have infamously failed to come up in the clutch in recent seasons. The 34-year-old Ward probably isn't alone going to get them over the hump or even back in the playoffs, but he'll at least provide the Sharks with a serviceable third-line sniper.

Ward's Three Points Not Enough For Caps In Game 6

News: Joel Ward scored a goal and assisted on the Caps' other two Game 6 tallies Sunday, but it wasn't enough in a 4-3 loss to the Rangers.
Analysis: Joel Ward helped power a third-period Washington comeback attempt by assisting on Evgeny Kuznetsov's goal, then scoring his own less than three minutes later, but the hole was too deep. A surprising point producer in this year's playoffs, Ward had gone quiet over the last three games -- scoreless with a minus-1 rating, though he had put five shots on goal in Friday's Game 5 loss. Nonetheless, he's now put up nine points over 13 games in these playoffs.

Caps' Ward: Six Points In Last Seven Games

News: Joel Ward's postseason production continued Saturday when he picked up an assist in the Capitals' 3-2 loss to the Rangers. He now has six points in his last seven games.
Analysis: Clutch -- that's the best way to describe his work these days. He has a history of going on scoring streaks and he certainly seems to enjoy playing alongside Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. We sure hope you snapped him up in your playoff pool. He's been worth every penny.

Caps' Ward Pots Clutch Winner In Game 1

News: Joel Ward fired the puck past Henrik Lundqvist with 1.3 seconds remaining Thursday in Game 1 to deliver a 2-1 victory over the Rangers.
Analysis: That stunner from Joel Ward dealt a harsh blow to the Rangers, and it's part of what's been a solid playoff run for him -- he's got five points in his last six games, including goals in two straight. Seeing ice time alongside Alex Ovechkin certainly has its benefits.

Ward Nets Goal In Game 7 Win

News: Joel Ward scored his first goal of the playoffs during Washington's 2-1 win over the Islanders on Monday.
Analysis: Joel Ward finished the series with a goal and three assists in seven games. Working on the top line with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, and garnering play on the team's second power-play unit, Ward has some excellent sleeper value in playoff pools as the Capitals ready for a second-round matchup with the Rangers.

Caps' Ward Has Three-Game Point Streak

News: Joel Ward recorded his third straight game with an assist during Washington's 5-1 rout of the Islanders in Thursday's Game 5.
Analysis: Joel Ward has a reputation for being a clutch playoff performer from his days in Nashville, and headed for unrestricted free agency this summer, he's again heating up at the right time. Playing his even strength minutes alongside Alex Ovechkin and getting work on the second power-play unit, Ward has some significant sleeper value in playoff pools if the Capitals can advance to the second round.

Caps' Ward Sets Up Score In Game 4 Overtime Win

News: Joel Ward collected an overtime assist in Tuesday's Game 4 win against the Islanders.
Analysis: Joel Ward dropped the puck off to Nicklas Backstrom, who then skated toward center ice, looped around, and ended the game. The Canadian winger has earned more than 20 minutes of ice time in consecutive games, and seems to be an underrated play in most daily games contests and playoff pools.

Caps' Ward Gets Two In Win

News: Joel Ward scored two goals -- one on the power play -- Thursday against Montreal, giving him a three-game point streak.
Analysis: With three markers and an assist over that span, Joel Ward's on a bit of a late-season hot streak now. Never a very significant offensive contributor in the first several years of his career, Ward is now on the verge of his second consecutive 20-goal campaign.

Caps' Ward Scores Goal Tuesday

News: Joel Ward potted a goal during Washington's 4-2 win over Carolina on Tuesday.
Analysis: The goal is Joel Ward's second point in as many games after being moved to a reconstituted top line with Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Although head coach Barry Trotz has done a great deal of line shuffling in recent weeks, the trio has looked very good in a pair of important games for the Capitals down the stretch, giving a boost to Ward's value late in the season. As long as he's playing with the highly skilled Russians (or at least getting more playing time), he's definitely worth adding in deeper leagues.

Caps' Ward Nets Power-Play Marker In Win

News: Joel Ward netted a power-play goal in Saturday's 6-1 win over the Sabres.
Analysis: Joel Ward is averaging a minute for of ice time than he enjoyed a season ago, but he's still well behind his 2013-14 scoring pace. While he's still shooting above his career rate of 11.4 percent for a third consecutive year, Ward's dropoff in assist production probably represents the biggest explanation for his decline. Even so, he's still quite productive by third-line standards, and should continue to carry value in deeper formats.

Ward Notches Two Power-Play Points

News: Joel Ward notched a power-play goal -- the game-winner -- and a power-play assist in Tuesday's 3-1 win over Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Joel Ward's tally with under five minutes left in the third period untied a 1-1 game and sent Washington to the win. However, it's his first multi-point game since Dec. 6, and just his third of the year -- not a lot of production for a guy who's skating more than 17 minutes per game.

Caps' Ward Adds Assist In Win

News: Joel Ward assisted on Eric Fehr's third-period goal in Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Kings.
Analysis: With Joel Ward's shooting percentage regressing back to his career rate (11.2%) this season, his goal totals have predictably taken a dive. Since Ward isn't especially proficient as a setup artist, either, he's noticed a sizable downgrade in his overall point production as well, effectively taking him off the radar outside of deeper formats.

Caps' Ward Snipes 11th In Victory

News: Joel Ward gave the Capitals a 3-0 lead in Saturday's win over the Red Wings with his 11th goal of the season.
Analysis: A popular regression candidate entering the season after he recorded a career-best 49 points in 2013-14 as a 33-year-old, Joel Ward hasn't fallen off quite as much as many projected. For the third straight season, he's finding net on over 15 percent of his shot attempts, a remarkable achievement considering his career rate sits at 11.5 percent. With 19 points over 41 games, he'll have a legitimate chance at cracking the 40-point plateau for a second straight year.

Caps' Ward Picks Up Two Points

News: Joel Ward gathered two assists in Saturday's win over the Devils.
Analysis: Joel Ward makes his bacon for his ability to finish off scoring rushes, but he instead set up Evgeny Kuznetsov's power-play and Brooks Laich's empty-net goal this time around. Though he's seeing nearly a minute-and-a-half increase in ice time from a season earlier, Ward's scoring hasn't noticed a dramatic spike. He still has a respectable 15 points in 26 contests.

Caps' Ward Pots Goal In Loss

News: Joel Ward scored a power play goal in Tuesday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Flames.
Analysis: After posting a career-high 24 goals last season, Joel Ward is on pace to reach somewhere in the 30-40 range. He may not get there, but he seems to be building on last year's 49 point campaign, and could be a worthwhile pick up.

Caps' Ward Tallies Two Goals In Win

News: Joel Ward netted two goals in 16:20 of ice time in Saturday's win over Calgary.
Analysis: A dominant performance from Joel Ward, who opened the scoring with a power-play tally in the first period, before scoring the eventual game-winning goal at even strength in the second period. Although his fourth-line role isn't ideal for fantasy owners, Ward has still managed four goals in seven games this season, making him worth a look in deep leagues. His great shot comes in use on the power play, where he lines up on the Capitals' second unit. Expect another 20-goal season from the 33-year-old.

Caps' Ward Pots Goal In Victory

News: Joel Ward scored his second goal of the season in Thursday's 6-2 win over the Devils.
Analysis: Joel Ward's unassisted marker with 17:35 remaining in the third period resulted in the Devils removing goalie Cory Schneider from the game. The winger is off to a respectable start to the 2014-15 campaign, but don't expect him to repeat last season's 24-goal, 49-point performance, which was aided heavily by an unsustainable 18 percent shooting rate.

Caps' Ward Tallies Assist In Sunday's Win

News: Joel Ward had an assist and two PIM's in 17:25 of ice time during the Capitals' 1-0 win over Buffalo on Sunday.
Analysis: Joel Ward played with Jason Chimera and rookie Andre Burakovsky at even-strength. Like Chimera, Ward had a banner year last season. Although the two have great chemistry, it wouldn't be surprising to see his production regress some this season. Keep an eye on him, but he's probably only worth drafting in deeper leagues.

Caps' Ward To Play In World Championship

News: Joel Ward has been selected to Team Canada's roster for the upcoming IIHF World Championships in Belarus, TSN's Darren Dreger reports.
Analysis: Joel Ward had a career year in his third season with the Capitals. Part of one of the more formidable third lines in the NHL this season, Ward compiled career highs with 24 goals and 49 points while spending most of the season alongside Jason Chimera and Eric Fehr. Entering the final season of a four-year, $12 million contact, Ward will have plenty of incentive to build on this year's campaign, and is certainly worth keeping an eye on in later rounds of next season's fantasy drafts.

Banner Year Rolls On For Caps' Ward

News: Joel Ward supplied a goal and two assists in Thursday's 5-2 victory over the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Joel Ward continues to put his previous career-best numbers for a season in the dust, boosting his goal and assists totals to 24 apiece in both categories. He's provided at least a point in three straight contests.

Goals In Four Straight For Caps' Ward

News: Joel Ward scored for the fourth consecutive game Thursday in Los Angeles, tallying the Caps' only goal in a 2-1 shootout loss.
Analysis: The marker came on his only shot of the game -- the second time that's happened in these four games. At age 33, Joel Ward has a stunning 22 goals and 42 points on the season -- both easily career highs.

Goal Streak Rages On For Caps' Ward

News: Joel Ward scored a goal in his third straight game in Tuesday's win over the Ducks.
Analysis: We're barely halfway through March, but Joel Ward is already enjoying his second-most productive offensive month of the season, as he's totaled four goals and four assists in 10 games. He could be worthy of adding in deeper leagues while he remains hot.

Caps' Ward Adds Two More Points

News: Joel Ward contributed a goal and assist in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: With the Leafs holding Alexander Ovechkin to just one shot on goal in the game, third-liners Joel Ward and Jason Chimera stepped up to buoy the Capitals' attack. Ward's first-period power-play tally allowed him to reach the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his career.

Caps' Ward Starting To Heat Up

News: Joel Ward provided a goal in Wednesday's loss to the Flyers.
Analysis: That's three straight games in which Joel Ward has provided points for the Capitals. He doesn't see a lot of ice time as a member of the third line, but his presence on the power play presents him with more scoring opportunities than his overall minutes might suggest.

Two-Point Game For Caps' Ward

News: Joel Ward notched a goal and assist in Saturday's 4-2 victory over the Bruins.
Analysis: Improved health has allowed Joel Ward to make a run at establishing a new personal-best in scoring this season, as he's now matched the career-high 35 points he previously posted with the Predators back in 2008-09. With 21 games remaining on the Capitals' schedule, expect Ward to surpass that total with ease.
