Meech Assists In AHL Stars' Comeback

News: Derek Meech had an assist and a plus-1 rating as the AHL Stars rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win 6-2 in Game 7 against Toronto on Tuesday, advancing to the Calder Cup finals.
Analysis: The 30-year-old depth defenseman has had an significant impact for Texas since returning to the NHL system from the KHL in January. He has three goals and eight assists through 16 postseason games this year.

Jets' Meech Will Sign In KHL

News: Derek Meech will sign with Dinamo Minsk of the KHL rather than re-sign with the Jets, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: The UFA blueliner will be the latest in a growing line of players to bolt for the KHL, and although his one assist in 16 games last season wasn't exactly impressive, it doesn't look good for the NHL when players voluntarily leave what is supposed to be the world's best hockey league.

Jets Recall Meech

News: Derek Meech was recalled from AHL St. John's on Wednesday, the Jets' official site reports.
Analysis: Derek Meech, who has registered 16 points in 128 NHL games overall, has yet to appear in a game with the big club this season, but he will get a chance to provide the Jets with some blue line depth after notching 23 points in 46 games with St. John's to date.

Jets Demote Meech

News: The Jets have assigned Derek Meech to AHL St. John's, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Derek Meech, who has recorded 17 points in 34 games with St. John's to date, is a candidate for an in-season call-up when the Jets need a little extra blue line depth.

Jets' Meech Battling Groin Injury

News: Derek Meech is battling a groin injury and will join the Jets for training camp once he's cleared to do so, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Ultimately, Derek Meech is viewed more as a bottom of the roster blueliner than one that is likely to stick and contend for a top-four role. Until he's ready to play, Meech is expected to remain at St. John's (AHL).

Jets' Meech: Pair Of Points In Win Over AHL Bears

News: Derek Meech had one goal and one assist in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Hershey Bears.
Analysis: Derek Meech has never been able to stick around for an extended period of time in the NHL and this year's lockout means he'll spend most of the year in the American Hockey League regardless.

Meech Signs With AHL's IceCaps

News: Derek Meech was one of seven players signed to minor league deals today according to the Jets' official website.
Analysis: Derek Meech played just two NHL games last season in a year cut short due to injury. Signing with the IceCaps gives him a chance to stay ready if and when the lockout ends.

Two-Way Deal For Jets' Meech

News: Derek Meech has re-signed with the Jets, reports ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.
Analysis: It's a one-year, two-way deal worth $700,000 if he sticks with the big squad and $105,000 if he's toiling in the AHL.

Jets Activate Meech; Reassign Him For Conditioning

News: The Jets have activated Derek Meech (lower body) from injured reserve and assigned him to AHL St. John's on a conditioning assignment, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Derek Meech has not played since suffering a lower body injury Oct. 26, so he will head to the AHL to get some game action in. Meech will likely return to Winnipeg once the Jets are confident he is in playing shape.

Jets' Meech Makes Progress Towards Return

News: Head coach Claude Noel said in a Thursday injury report that Derek Meech (lower body) was doing "quite a bit better," but did not provide details as to when the defenseman might next be available.
Analysis: Though the Winnipeg native blue-liner seems to be recovering well from his November surgery, given his play in past seasons, his production is not likely to reach fantasy-relevance when he returns to action.

Jets' Meech Out 6-8 Weeks

News: Derek Meech (lower body) had surgery and will miss six-to-eight weeks, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: The Jets haven't revealed the nature of Derek Meech's lower body injury, but at least this timetable makes it clear that he'll likely be sidelined until early January.

Jets Place Meech on Injured Reserve

News: The Jets placed Derek Meech (lower body) on injured reserve Saturday, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: It's unclear how long Derek Meech will be out, but placing him on IR will give him time to heal while also opening up a roster spot for goalie Peter Mannino.

Jets' Meech Suffered Lower Body Injury Wednesday

News: Derek Meech did not travel with the team after suffering a lower body injury in practice Wednesday, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: The 27-year-old defenseman has played in two games so far this season and is yet to record a point. He has a career-high of seven points in 2008-09 so he's not going to bring a lot of offense to your fantasy table.

Meech Earns Roster Spot With Jets

News: The Jets will add Derek Meech to their roster, the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis: "He's someone that has tremendous flexibility, experience at the National [Hockey] League level, and can both play forward and defense, and he's a tremendous person," Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said. "He's had a really good training camp. He's earned the opportunity." Derek Meech, formerly with the Red Wings organization, signed a one-year, two-way contract with Winnipeg in July. He'll add some depth to the defensive corps of the reborn Jets.

Meech Signs Two-Way Deal With Winnipeg

News: The Jets have signed Meech to a one-year, two-way deal valued at $700,000 in the NHL, and $105,000 in the AHL, the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis: Meech was drafted by the Red Wings in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, but played sparingly for the parent club and logged just four goals and 12 assists in 126 games, spanning four seasons. His 2010-11 campaign was spent exclusively with the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL), where he pitched in 10 goals and 27 assists in 74 games. We can see Meech being a depth player for the Jets, just as he was with the Wings.

Wings' Meech Testing Free Agency

News: Meech will test the open market this summer as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: He's been in the Wings' system for seven years, but Meech spent 2010-11 with Grand Rapids (AHL) because of the Wings' blue-line depth so he'll look to latch on as a potential third-pairing option with another organization this summer.

Meech Producing for Grand Rapids

News: Meech, who was sidelined by a concussion in training camp, has picked up a pair of assists through four games with Grand Rapids (AHL) this season.
Analysis: The Wings brought up Doug Janik when Brian Rafalski went down with a knee injury, so Meech doesn't appear to be on the short list for a callup to Detroit anytime soon.

Slow Progress for Wings' Meech

News: Meech (concussion) rode the stationary bike for 20 minutes on Wednesday, but remains out indefinitely, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: He's ticketed for Grand Rapids (AHL) to start the season anyway, but Meech seems to be more than a week away from being ready for game action.

Wings' Meech Suffers Concussion

News: Meech will miss at least one week after suffering a concussion in Wednesday's preseason loss to Pittsburgh, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: He's currently on track to open the season at Grand Rapids (AHL) anyway, so this won't make it any easier for Meech to parlay an injury to one of the regular blueliners into an Opening Night roster spot.

Meech scores second goal of season

News: Red Wings LW Derek Meech scored his second goal of the season in Tuesday's win over the Sharks.
Analysis: Meech has never reached double digits in a single season and won't hit that mark this year with just five points so far. He is on the ice for his defensive skills and has little to no Fantasy value.

Meech has career night vs. Wild

News: The Sports Xchange reports Red Wings D Derek Meech picked up a pair of assists in the third period on Thursday against the Wild, his first career multi-point game. Meech is expected to be the odd man out once Niklas Kronwall returns from his knee injury next week.
Analysis: Meech is one of those players that can play at forward or on the blue line. He has been playing a lot on defense lately because of injuries, but that does appear to be coming to an end shortly. Meech isn't much of a Fantasy option.

Meech has a minus-5 night

News: The Sports Xchange reports Red Wings LW Derek Meech had a particularly rough night on Tuesday against the Islanders, posting a minus-5 rating and committing a team-high four turnovers. He is tied with Ville Leino for the team's worst plus-minus rating (minus-9).
Analysis: Meech is one of those players that can play at forward or on the blue line. He has been playing a lot on defense lately and his numbers sill are suffering. Meech isn't much of a Fantasy option.

Meech seeing a lot more of the ice

News: The Detroit News reports that Red Wings LW Derek Meech has played in five straight since Niklas Kronwall suffered a knee injury. Meech also is getting power-play time. "It's definitely a treat," he said. "That's something I did practice beforehand, too, so I was ready for that situation."
Analysis: Unfortunately for Meech, he hasn't turned his extra ice time into any points and he remains a non-factor in Fantasy play.

Detroit will lean on young defensemen

News: The banged-up Detroit Red Wings have lost defenseman Niklas Kronwall for at least a month with a sprained ligament in his left knee. The team announced Sunday that Kronwall will be out four to eight weeks. Kronwall had a leg-on-leg, open-ice collision with Montreal enforcer Georges Laraque on Saturday. Laraque, who was called for tripping, said it was an accident. The Red Wings called it a dirty play. The Sports Xchange reports the Wings will not recall a defenseman from Grand Rapids (AHL). Derek Meech will be inserted into the lineup for Monday's game in Nashville. The team's younger defensemen -- Jonathan Ericsson, Brett Lebda and Meech -- will play more minutes and assume a greater role on the power play and penalty-killing units.
Analysis: The only really interesting name on the above list is Ericsson. The Red Wings have Nicklas Lidstrom and Brian Rafalski, so it's not like Lebda and Meech will assume all of Kronwall's offensive responsibilities. But Ericsson has shown he can be effective at both ends of the ice, like Kronwall, so he might benefit the most. Consider adding him in larger Fantasy formats. Lebda and Meech still have minimal appeal.

Eaves, Meech to be healthy scratches

News: The Detroit News reports that Red Wings RW Patrick Eaves and LW Derek Meech will be the healthy scratches for Thursday's season opener against the Blues in Sweden.
Analysis: Eaves looked to have a decent shot at opening on the fourth line, but Justin Abdelkader, Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby will make up that unit instead. Eaves is still worth stashing in super-deep leagues for now, but this isn't the best start to his season.
