News:Antero Niittymaki signed a one-year contract with Finnish team TPS Turku, NHL.com reports.
Analysis:Antero Niittymaki, 32, had his NHL career derailed by chronic hip injuries and was limited to 13 games at the AHL level in 2011-12. He considered retirement but will return to his native Finland for what figures to be his final hurrah.
News:Antero Niittymaki has been assigned to AHL Worcester, CSN's Brodie Brazil reports
Analysis: The Sharks are going with a goalie duo of Thomas Greiss and Tyson Sexsmith for the time being as Antti Niemi recovers from being dinged up in practice.
News:Antero Niittymaki has been placed on waivers, CSN's Brodie Brazil reports.
Analysis:Antero Niittymaki was the third wheel of the goalie trio with Antti Niemi and Thomas Greiss, and wasn't going to receive a significant amount of playing time as a Shark. Teams that are looking at an insurance policy in goal will probably be interested as he's in the last year of his contract.
News: The Sharks have assigned Antero Niittymaki to Worcester on a conditioning assignment, CSN's Brodie Brazil reports.
Analysis:Antero Niittymaki is still working his way back from his hip surgery in September. This leaves the Sharks with two goalies at the NHL level in Antti Niemi and Thomas Greiss.
News: The Sharks have recalled Antero Niittymaki from his conditioning assignment with the Worcester Sharks, according to the team's official site.
Analysis:Antero Niittymaki appeared in three games with Worcester, posting a 1-2 record, a 3.38 goals-against average and a .878 save percentage. He could be between the pipes as early as Monday.
News: The Sharks activated Antero Niittymaki from the IR and assigned him to AHL Worcester as a conditioning assignment, the Sharks' official twitter reports.
Analysis:Antero Niittymaki will look to get his legs back in Worcester, but it seems Antti Niemi's solid play as of late will keep Niittymaki out of the Sharks' net for the foreseeable future. He may, however, have a chance to challenge Thomas Greiss for the number two spot.
Sharks' Niittymaki (Hip) Participates In Full Team Practice
News:Antero Niittymaki (hip) participated in his first full team practice since his hip surgery in September, the San Jose Mercury News' David Pollack reports.
Analysis: Barring any setbacks Antero Niittymaki should be returning in the later part of December. Given how well Thomas Greiss is playing it's still not certain who will be the second goalie with Antti Niemi.
News:Antero Niittymaki (hip) practiced with full pads for the first time Wednesday, Brodie Brazil's official Twitter reports.
Analysis: This is more good news for the Sharks. Antero Niittymaki is making progress and appears to be having a healthy recovery.
Sharks' Niittymaki (Hip) On Track For December Return
News:Antero Niittymaki (hip) is on track to come back in mid-December, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis:Antero Niittymaki has reached the point where he's skating when the more active players aren't around. Assuming he returns in mid-December it will be right on track with the time frame set following his operation.
News:Antero Niittymaki is likely to be out for 12 weeks after undergoing hip surgery earlier this week, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Given the significance of a hip injury to a goalie, we're not surprised to learn that Antero Niittymaki has opted for surgery. While Niitty recovers, Thomas Greiss appears to be the favorite to slide in as the backup netminder behind Antti Niemi (cyst removal) in San Jose this season.
News:Antero Niittymaki, who battled a groin injury last season, could miss up to 12 weeks with "recurring pain problems," the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Assuming Antero Niittymaki requires the full 12 weeks to recover, he'll be looking at a return around the middle of December. The Finnish backstop made 22 starts for the Sharks last season but he's since been relegated to backup duty and this latest setback only depresses his value further.
News: Niittymaki did not make any starts against the Kings in the first round of the postseason, though he did save 29 of 30 shots between two relief appearances for a save percentage of .967, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: While Antti Niemi appears to be the clear-cut No. 1 goalie for San Jose, Niittymaki proved that he could be an adequate fill-in option when necessary. Still, depending on your league settings, Niittymaki might not be worth hanging on to in playoff pools as he has been deprived of any starts.
Sharks' Niittymaki Not Expecting To Start Thursday's Game 4
News: Niittymaki does not believe he will be the goalie to start for the Sharks on Thursday, when the team plays Game 4 against the Kings, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki put himself back into the limelight with Tuesday's Game 3 relief win over the Kings, but while nothing has been made official yet, Niittymaki does not believe he will start over Antti Niemi on Thursday evening. "I think Nemo's going to be the goalie," he said.
News: Niittymaki stopped 11 of 12 shots in relief of Antti Niemi in Tuesday's 6-5 overtime Game 3 win over the Kings.
Analysis: Despite Niittymaki's strong play Tuesday, it's hard to believe he has any real chance of starting Game 4. After all, Niemi at one point this season did make 34 straight starts.
News: Niittymaki will start Wednesday's road game against Anaheim, CSN Bay Area's Brodie Brazil reports.
Analysis: Coach Todd McLellan hinted last weekend that Niittymaki would likely see some playing time as the Sharks wrap up their regular season schedule this week. With three games remaining, the Sharks have already clinched first place in the Pacific Division, so McLellan obviously sees no harm in giving his backup netminder some work. Antti Niemi is still expected to be the Sharks' starting goaltender once the playoffs begin next week.
News: Niittymaki gave up six goals on 34 shots in Wednesday's loss to the Ducks.
Analysis: This really isn't all that surprising - the Sharks wrapped up the Pacific Division on Monday, and this was Niittymaki's first start in 34 games.
News: Niittymaki could find his way into a game before the regular season expires, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: "As we move forward, there's a real good chance he'll get some playing time. I think he has to," coach Todd McLellan said. "But the stronger we play and the more points we put in the bank, the better odds of that happening." Antti Niemi has started 33 consecutive games, foiling any hopes on the side of the fantasy owner that has been counting on Niittymaki to make any kind of impact in the second half of the season.
News: Niittymaki (groin) spelled Antti Niemi on Monday against the Blackhawks after Niemi got off to a bad start. Niittymaki made 14 saves on 16 shots in 32:35 of ice time.
Analysis: Niemi has taken hold of San Jose's starting job, limiting Niittymaki's usefulness. However, he's worthy of a spot start when he gets the chance.
News: Niittymaki (groin) is expected to start in a game before the regular season comes to an end, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Team Teal has yet to make an official announcement of when he will start next, but as suggested in the report, Niitty's next start could take place Tuesday night, on the road, against the Stars. He hasn't appeared in a game in over two months.
News: Niittymaki (groin) is expected to start one of the Sharks' upcoming games, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki, who was recently activated off long-term injured reserve, will continue to back up Antti Niemi for the time being, but coach Todd McLellan plans on using him in a game situation soon. "We're all aware of how much [Niemi] has had to play lately," McLellan said. "Get Niitty a few more practices, a few more game situations where he's involved on the bench and then he'll be ready to go play. I think we're going to need both goaltenders. We've said that from the beginning of the year on." For now, Niemi is expected to start Tuesday's game against Nashville, but look for Niittymaki's return to the lineup later this week or early next.
News: Niittymaki has been activated off long-term injured reserve, according to the San Jose Mercury News. He's been out since January 13 with a groin injury.
Analysis: He's been close to a return, but now it looks like he's ready for game action as Carter Hutton has been returned to Worcester. Of course, the guy Nitttymaki had been sharing time with, Antti Niemi, has been one of the hottest goalies in the league since Niittymaki's injury, so his percentage of starts are sure to be lower than they were before.
News: Niittymaki (groin) is out for Thursday's game against the Red Wings, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki has not been able to appear in a game in seven weeks. However, the 30-year old recently said he hopes to be back later this week.
News: Niittymaki (groin) said he hopes to return later this week, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niitty has not seen game ice since Jan. 13. Assuming he does return later this week, it would be wise to see how he looks for a few games before re-activating him for fantasy purposes. Fellow goalie Antti Niemi has been terrific starting in his absence, so be sure to also monitor the workload between the two tenders.
News: Niittymaki (lower body) has been skating in practice, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: The Sharks chose not to pull off a trade for a backup netminder before the deadline. Perhaps the team assumes Niittymaki will be able to provide valuable minutes down the stretch to spell Antti Niemi from time to time.
News: Niittymaki (lower body) practiced Sunday but is still not ready to play, the Sharks' official site reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki's presence at practice Sunday is an encouraging sign, but with no concrete ETA for his return, he remains a risky fantasy option this coming week.
News: According to Sharks GM Doug Wilson, Niittymaki, already on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, is out "indefinitely," the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki's fantasy value takes another beating due to the fact that his return date is unknown at this point. But what is clear is that his latest injury is different from the groin problem that initially had bothered him, as confirmed by coach Todd McLellan and reported by the Mercury News.
News: Niittymaki (lower body) has been placed on injured reserve, the Sharks' official site reports.
Analysis: According to David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News, Sharks GM Doug Wilson is not sure when Niitty will be able to return. One more setback and it may be worth cutting him loose in fantasy leagues, especially since Antti Niemi has returned to form in the nets with Niitty out of action.
News: Niittymaki continues to be held off the ice in order to let his lower body heal, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: "He's getting treatments back in San Jose and when we get back as a team, we'll have a better indication where he's at," McLellan said. Niittymaki has not seen game ice since January 13, and it's not clear when he'll be ready to come back.
News: Niittymaki (lower body) is out for Tuesday's game against the Predators, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki has been out for longer than a calendar month with injuries to his groin and lower body. He's worth keeping in most fantasy leagues but understand that fellow goalie Antti Niemi has shined while Niittymaki has been on the mend, which was not the case when both Finnish tenders were healthy and evenly sharing starts.
News: Niittymaki (lower body) is out for Friday's game against the Devils, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Analysis: Niitty has been out for close to a month with various ailments to his groin and lower body. With fellow Finnish goalie Antti Niemi leading the way, the Sharks have been on a 9-0-1 run, so it will be interesting to see how coach Todd McLellan splits the goalie work once Niitty is finally able to start again.
Sharks' Niittymaki Suffers Another Lower-Body Injury
News: Niittymaki has aggravated a previous injury and will be unavailable for Wednesday's game against Columbus, the Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki served as backup for Antti Niemi for Tuesday's 2-0 win against Washington, but reportedly tweaked something during the pregame warmup. Word is the injury is not the same groin injury that he suffered on Jan. 20 and caused him to miss the next six games. Consider him day-to-day.
News: Niittymaki participated in Tuesday's optional skate and afterward coach Todd McLellan declared that his goalie will be available for Tuesday night's game against the Capitals, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: "He obviously won't start but he'll back-up," McLellan said. "Because we move forward here, we'll get him more and more practice time, and we'll be looking for a start from him at some point." Niittymaki has not played in four weeks, but being able to serve as the backup to Antti Niemi is a big step toward him starting again soon.
News: Niittymaki (groin) practiced Sunday morning, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki's status for Tuesday's game against the Capitals has yet to be determined. If he's unable to serve as the backup, the team could promote a goalie from the AHL as speculated in the report by the Mercury News.
News: Niittymaki re-tweaked his groin during practice Friday morning, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Apparently this latest setback is related to the groin injury that has kept Niittymaki from playing the past five contests. Furter details are pending, but if Niittymaki is to remain sidelined then we'd expect Alex Stalock to continue filling in as the interim backup behind Antti Niemi.
News: Niittymaki looks close to returning from a groin injury, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: It remains to be seen just how close he actually is to getting his next start, but for what it's worth, Antti Niemi is mentioned in the report by the Mercury News as being Wednesday's starter with Alex Stalock as the backup.
News: Niittymaki has been taken off injured reserve from a groin injury, the Sharks' official site reports.
Analysis: Niitty hasn't appeared in a game since January 13, but as suggested in the report, fellow Finnish goalie Antti Niemi is expected to start Tuesday against the Coyotes as Niitty is not yet ready to play.
News: Niittymaki (groin) practiced Monday but is expected to give way to Antti Niemi on Tuesday when the Sharks face the Coyotes, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: "It was a good practice and I didn't feel anything," Niittymaki said. "We're going in the right direction. I'm hoping that sometime this week I'll be back at 100 percent and in the lineup." Niitty has a 12-6-3 record and a 2.54 goals-against average in 22 games this season.
News: Niittymaki (groin) will not play again until after the All-Star break, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki reportedly is eligible to come off injured reserve this Thursday, but his return to game ice on that day will not be possible since there are no games scheduled due to the All-Star break.
Sharks' Niittymaki Unlikely To Miss More Than A Week
News: Niittymaki's groin injury is not likely to keep him out for longer than a week, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Antti Niemi has started (and won) the past two games with Niittymaki on the mend.
News: Niittymaki, who suffered a groin injury making a save during breakaway drills at Thursday's skate, has been placed on IR and will be out of action for at least a week, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Based on the strange timing, the Sharks had to use a 22-year-old Canadian college goaltender to back up Antii Niemi for Thursday's game, and will now use J.P. Anderson to back up Niemi while Niittymaki is out. Niemi owners will probably benefit from almost exclusive time in the coming days, while Niittymaki's value continues to take a hit based on lesser play compared to Niemi, and now this injury.
News: Niittymaki was injured during the morning skate and is unable to start or back up Thursday against the Canucks, according to a Canucks TV report.
Analysis: We're not sure of the severity yet, but we do know that Jordan White has been brought up on an emergency basis to back up Antii Niemi for Thursday's contest.
News: Niittymaki lost his third straight game Thursday, allowing four goals on 28 shots to the Oilers.
Analysis: He's been rough each of his last three times out, and wasn't altogether sharp in two of the wins in his four-game December streak either. Antti Niemi had started three straight, played well in all of them, and lost them all; Niemi is likely to be back in goal Saturday.
News: Niittymaki will start Thursday's game against the Oilers, CSN Bay Area's Brodie Brazil reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki gets a turn after giving way to Antti Niemi for the Sharks' last three games.
News: Niittymaki made 19 saves Thursday night in the Sharks 3-0 loss to the Sabres.
Analysis: It's hard to win games when your teammates get shutout, so you cannot really fault Niittymaki on this one. He is, however, still in a platooon situation with Antti Niemi where he's seeing less and less action so his fantasy value isn't what it once was.
News: Niittymaki will start Thursday against the Sabres, according to CSN's Brodie Brazil.
Analysis: Niittymaki will now have started just six of the Sharks' past 18 games, so every start is crucial if he hopes to get continued playing time and have it be a truer timeshare with Antti Niemi. Niittymaki's last start was December 29, though this is a decent time to use him, netminding for a well rested team against the Sabres, who own a 7-8-4 road record.
News: Niitymaki managed only 19 stops in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the host Wild.
Analysis: Nittymaki was riding a personal four-game win streak before rolling in Minnesota and allowing five goals on 25 shots. He will continue to see a timeshare with fellow Finn Antti Niemi until crunch time nearer to the end of the season. Fantasy owners of both netminders need to plan accordingly.
News: Niittymaki will start against the Wild on Wednesday, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niitty has been an above-average goalie in his first year with the Sharks, but he hasn't run away with the starting gig as coach Todd McLellan has created an even timeshare in goal between Niitty and Antti Niemi.
News: Niittymaki stopped 26 of 27 shots in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Oilers.
Analysis: Niittymaki has now won four straight starts. As has been the case all season long, whenever he can manage to wrestle away playing time from Antti Niemi, Niittymaki is a fine fantasy play.
News: Niittymaki will make his third straight start Tuesday when the Sharks take on the Oilers, according to the San Jose Mercury News' Twitter Feed.
Analysis: A home start against the Oilers is a pretty strong play, and Niittymaki will go for his fourth straight win as he's temporarily taken over the better side of the timeshare with Antti Niemi.
News: Niittymaki and the Sharks won easily in St. Louis on Saturday, as the San Jose backstop turned aside 21 of the 22 shots he saw. It's his third win in a row.
Analysis: There's little question that Niittymaki is playing better than is Antti Niemi nowadays, but the San Jose coaching staff still hasn't seen fit to hand him the keys to the car full-time. If the disparity between the goalies' effectiveness remains or widens, we think the staff will eventually make Niittymaki the No. 1 netminder; but until that happens, you're looking at a platoon situation that isn't good for either man's fantasy value.
News: Niittymaki will start Saturday against the Blues, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: This will make consecutive starts for Niittymaki, the first time he's played back-to-back in over two weeks. Instead, Antti Niemi has played the majority of games for the Sharks lately, however neither goalie should be considered the team's #1 guy, as coach Todd McLellan has gone on record as saying he prefers the two-man system. Niittymaki owners should pay close attention to the schedule to make sure he's in your fantasy lineup on the night he's starting. He's a good bet to pick up a win most nights, but if you're looking for excellent peripheral stats like GAA and SV% (currently 2.46 and .905 for Niittymaki, respectively), you will likely be left wanting.
News: Niittymaki, who started and won in Dallas on Thursday after a four-game hiatus, expressed his concern about not feeling comfortable on the ice, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: "It was nice to play, but it felt terrible to be honest with you," Niittymaki said. "I haven't played a whole lot and they didn't shoot the puck. I was kind of hoping to get 30 shots, but we got the W and that was all that matters. Good for us." Indeed, only 18 shots came his way, not even half the amount that the Sharks directed at the Stars' Kari Lehtonen on the other side of the ice. While it's true that Niittymaki hadn't played in awhile, both he and Antti Niemi have made 16 starts apiece as co-successors to Evgeni Nabokov this season.
News: Niittymaki faced just 18 shots in regulation and overtime Thursday against Dallas, allowed three goals, and won anyway.
Analysis: Nitty was really the weak link for the Sharks in this one, as they piled up 43 shots on offense while playing good defense. That's certainly been the story lately, as Nitty has won three out of his last four starts despite allowing a total of 15 goals.
Sharks' Finally Going Back To Niittymaki For Thursday Start
News: Niittymaki will start in goal Thursday against the Stars, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: It will be interesting to see how Niittymaki performs having not started in a game since December 8. The Sharks have played four games since then, with alternate goalie Antti Niemi doing his best to overshadow a slot start to the season.
News: Niittymaki will watch from the bench on Wednesday as Antti Niemi gets the start against Nashville, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Despite his heavy use of Niemi in the starter's role lately, coach Todd McLellan was quick to shoot down the idea that Niittymaki is the team's No. 2 goalie. "[The competition between Niittymaki and Niemi] is ongoing and I'm sure it will be that way all year," McLellan said. "I'd like to keep the two-man option available to our club all year and that includes playoffs if we're fortunate enough to be competing in that tournament." That said, we expect to see McLellan continue to ride the hot hand and give Niemi the majority of starts as long as he's playing well. Niittymaki will no doubt get another kick at the can at some point, but Niemi appears to be in the driver's seat for the time being.
News: Niittymaki denied 31 of 35 shots against the Flyers, his former team, in Wednesday's 5-4 OT win.
Analysis: With this showing, fantasy owners had the chance to see how Niittymaki performed having not started any of the three games previous, and how he fared against one of the league's top clubs. Niittymaki allowed three goals in the second period, but was on top of his game otherwise. Expect him to continue splitting goalie minutes with Antti Niemi.
News: Niittymaki will start against his former team - the Flyers - on Wednesday, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: This will be the first start for Niittymaki since Nov. 30 as Anttii Niemi has started the last three games for the Sharks. Since Niittymaki has also been confirmed as the starter for Thursday's game against the Senators, it seems both goalies are getting their starts in bunches these days, making the timeshare a tough one to read for fantasy owners. Monitor carefully.
Sharks Summon Niittymaki for Thursday Start Against Ottawa
News: Niittymaki will work between the pipes for the Sharks in a road game against the Senators on Thursday, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki, who allowed five goals his last time out, is caught in a goalie timeshare with Antti Niemi. A popular sentiment ahead of Thursday's contest is that the Senators will be paying close attention to Sharks forward Dany Heatley, who talked his way out of Ottawa last year. As a result, Niittymaki might be involved in a physical contest, which could slow down the pace of the game.
News: Niittymaki will get the start against Detroit on Tuesday, according to Sharks reporter Brodie Brazil.
Analysis: Statistically, Niittymaki is having his best season ever, with a .917 SV% and a 2.14 GAA. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, he's still more or less stuck in a timeshare with Antti Niemi. Until Niitty can snag himself a larger share of the starting load, he really only makes for an occasional option for your fantasy goaltending needs.
News: Niittymaki stopped just 24 of 29 shots in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to Detroit.
Analysis: Even with Tuesday's poor effort, Niittymaki's record on the season is a very impressive 8-3-3. That being said, he is still splitting time with Antti Niemi in goal for the Sharks, which puts a limit on his fantasy value.
News: Niittymaki endured a shaky third frame to hold on for a 4-3 win against the Oilers on Saturday. Staked to a 4-1 lead early in the third, he yielded two goals in 57 seconds to make it a tight contest.
Analysis: The real issue here is crease time. Niittymaki is getting about 60% of the starts, while Antti Niemi gets the other 40%. Niittymaki's having a much better year, but thus far, the coaching staff has yet to give him the load of a typical No. 1 netminder. For the last two weeks, the goaltending decision has been simple: If one of the San Jose goalies wins, he starts the next game. If he doesn't, he sits. That kind of environment isn't conducive to building confidence.
News: Niittymaki had a good statistical night Saturday, stopping 24 of the 26 shots he faced. But he got no offensive support at all as the Sharks foundered against the visiting Blue Jackets, 3-0.
Analysis: Technically, he has a winning record in November (3-2-2), and he's been solid in the crease, allowing more than three goals in a game only once all year. But the Sharks are scuffling along in fourth place, primarily due to a merely average offense. If your league doesn't emphasize goaltending wins, he's a solid play. If it does, then his teammates will cost you until the offense wakes up.
News: Niittymaki will get the start against Columbus on Saturday night, according to Sharks reporter Brodie Brazil.
Analysis: This is a good spot for Niitty, as the Sharks are rested after having Friday off and the Blue Jackets are coming off a Friday night game and will also be finishing up a West Coast road trip where they'll now play their third game in four nights.
News: Niitymaki stopped just 18 of the 22 shots he faced Wednesday during a 4-3 overtime loss in Colorado.
Analysis: The Avs barely got anything going in this game, but still managed to find a way to get the puck behind the Finnish goalie. Niitymaki is playing tremendous hockey even in light of this game's results.
News: Niittymaki will start in goal for the Sharks on Wednesday night, CSN's Brodie Brazil reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki has been hot lately, so make sure he is in your lineup for Wednesday's action.
News: Niittymaki saved 32 of 35 shots as the Sharks defeated the Kings on Monday, 6-3.
Analysis: It was just another day at the office for Niitty, who now has a sterling record of 7-1-2, while ranking sixth in the NHL in save percentage (.927) and fourth in goals-against average (1.91). Keep rolling with him as the presence of fellow Finn Antti Niemi hasn't been a problem for the more experienced netminder in San Jose.
News: Niittymaki is expected to start against the Kings on Monday night, Brodie Brazil of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: He's clearly outplayed Antti Niemi to this point, so it's not a surprise that Niittymaki is getting the opportunity to start again at home Monday night where he's gone 4-0-2 with a 2.11 GAA and .918 save percentage in six starts.
News: Niittymaki stopped 24 of 25 shots in regulation and overtime, then didn't allow a goal on two attempts in the shootout to beat the Islanders on Thursday.
Analysis: Niittymaki is now 6-1-2 with thoroughly better numbers (.929, 1.80) than his competition for the starting job, Antti Niemi.
News: Niittymaki will start Thursday night against the Islanders, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niitty is sitting pretty record-wise (5-1-2), and is starting to earn more starts thanks to a healthy save percentage of .925 and goals-against average (1.91). The Islanders have lost eight in a row, making Niitty a great fantasy start for Thursday.
Sharks' Niittymaki Comes Up Short in All-California Contest
News: Niittymaki saved 17 on 20 shots, which was not enough as the Sharks suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to the Ducks on Tuesday.
Analysis: Niittymaki witnessed his team putting up more than double the amount of shots (41) against Anaheim's Jonas Hiller on the other end, but a goal by Lubomir Visnovsky late in overtime was the deciding factor in the game. On the bright side, Niittymaki avoided a regulation loss and has not let in more than three goals in any of the nine games that he's played in this season.
News: Niittymaki will start in goal for the Sharks on Tuesday night, CSN's Brodie Brazil reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki has not allowed more than two goals in a game since his first start of the season, but he will face a tough test Tuesday against an Anaheim team that has scored 11 goals in its last three games.
News: Niittymaki has now gone four weeks without allowing more than two goals in a game. He held the Lightning to two tallies in a 5-2 win Saturday, stopping 33 shots in the process.
Analysis: The only thing he needs in order to become a major stud goalie is more crease time, and it looks like he's going to get it. He's 5-1-1, and his composite numbers of 1.78, .932 are good enough for top-10 status. We doubt that the San Jose coaching staff will return to a split in playing time with Antti Niemi. If you took a flier on him as a backup netminder in your draft, your lottery numbers have hit.
News: The Sharks will call on Niittymaki to face the Lightning, his former team, Saturday, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki should be well rested for the contest since Antti Niemi, the team's alternate goalie, started two days earlier against the Blues. Keep rolling with Niitty as he has been one of the best puck-stoppers in the Western Conference this season.
San Jose's Niittymaki: Tough-Luck Loser on Tuesday
News: Niittymaki allowed just one goal on 16 shots Tuesday night against the Wild, but the Sharks lost the game, 1-0.
Analysis: The Sharks fired 36 shots at Niklas Backstrom but they couldn't beat the Finnish keeper. Niittymaki has outplayed Antti Niemi early in the season and as long as he keeps it up, he's going to get most of the playing time for San Jose.
News: Niittymaki will get yet another start in goal Tuesday against Minnesota, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: As the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Niittymaki has taken to the Sharks' net in five successive games, and is performing at a high level, while fending off Antti Niemi for the most starts in goal, so far.
News: Niittymaki allowed two late Anaheim power-play goals, but the game was well in hand by then as San Jose won at home, 5-2.
Analysis: There's just no arguing with a guy who's 4-0-1, with numbers like 1.88, .929. This outing is bad news for Antti Niemi, who's staring hard at becoming strictly a backup.
News: Niittymaki will work between the pipes Saturday against the Ducks, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki has not only been a pleasant surprise for the Sharks, but across the league as well. The Finn ranks fifth in the NHL with a save percentage of .932 and has yet to lose a game in regulation. Backed by a high-powered team offense, he's definitely start-worthy in fantasy leagues.
Sharks' Tap Niittymaki For Wednesday Start Against New Jersey
News: Niittymaki will start in goal for the Sharks on Wednesday against the Devils, Rich Chere of the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: With Antti Niemi struggling badly, Niitty is looking like the better option in goal for the Sharks. No. 30 has only allowed seven goals in four games.
News: Niittymaki got tons of offense and allowed only two in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the visiting Devils.
Analysis: Niittymaki ran his record to 3-0-1 and looks like the top dog between the pipes for the Sharks. He will still see a split in duties, but Niittymaki could get the lion's share so plan accordingly.
Sharks' Niittymaki: Still in Goalie Competition With Antti Niemi
News: Sharks coach Todd McLellan agreed Tuesday that Niittymaki has been better in goal (than Antti Niemi), but the bench boss maintains that both goalies will continue to compete against each other for time in the net, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: "We'll go with whoever we feel gives us the best opportunity to win on that night," McLellan said. "Two nights later, it might be another guy." Both goalies have appeared in four games this season, but so far, Niittymaki has posted the better numbers. He has a 1.80 goals-against average to Niemi's 4.49 GAA, which undoubtedly will be considered when McLellan choses who to start on Wednesday for a night game against the Devils.
News: Niittymaki allowed one goal on 25 shots after taking over for a struggling Antti Niemi in the first period of Sunday's 4-0 loss to Calgary.
Analysis: Niittymaki remains undefeated in regulation to complement a minuscule 1.80 goals-against average. Meanwhile, Niemi has been dismal early this season, which obviously bodes well for Niittymaki's chances of getting more starts down the road.
Sharks' Niittymaki Will Make Second Consecutive Start Saturday
News: Niittymaki will start in goal against Edmonton on Saturday, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki is two days removed from a solid win against the Avalanche. If your fantasy team is in need of a spot starter in goal, consider Niittymaki for leagues that allow you to set your lineup every day.
Sharks' Niittymaki Gets Starting Nod in Goal Thursday
News: Niittymaki will face the Avalanche on Thursday night, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: This will be Niitty's second start of the season. When the 2010-11 regular season opened, there was wide speculation that Sharks head coach Todd McLellan would give Niittymaki and Antti Niemi equal chances in goal, but Niittymaki has been summoned between the pipes less frequently than Niemi, so far. According to the Mercury News, the decision of who starts in San Jose occurs on a game-by-game basis. "I'm sure everybody has a plan, but plans change," Niittymaki said. "I'll go game by game, but there's always changes."
News: Niittymaki stopped 29 of 31 shots Thursday against Colorado in the Sharks' 4-2 win.
Analysis: Niittymaki was making just his second start of the season. Antti Niemi has seen three starts already, but has opened the door for Niittymaki with his mediocre play.
News: Niittymaki got the start Saturday against the Blue Jackets and made 22 saves in a 3-2 OT loss.
Analysis: The Sharks may go back and forth between Niitty and Antti Niemi until one gets hot. Watch for daily updates on starters; weekly activations may prove to be a challenge until they get in the groove.
News: Niittymaki denied 22 of 25 shots in Saturday's 3-2 overtime loss to Columbus.
Analysis: Niittymaki was done in by a goal from Blue Jackets forward Ethan Moreau in the overtime frame. Niitty and the Sharks have plenty of time to regroup as Team Teal doesn't play again until October 16, a home match against the Thrashers.
News: Niittymaki will get the nod in goal Saturday against Columbus, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Last March, with Tampa Bay, Niittymaki yielded three goals on 25 shots in his only game against the Blue Jackets. It will be interesting to see how Niitty performs as Antti Niemi may have already upped the ante (pun intended) on the starting goalie competition with a solid season-opening win Friday.
News: Niittymaki is slated for a full game in his start Wednesday against Vancouver, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Niittymaki has five times as much NHL experience as Antti Niemi, his goalie teammate in San Jose. So far, neither puck-stopper has run away with the starting job with two preseason games left on the schedule.
Sharks' Niittymaki Surrenders Four Goals Wednesday
News: Niittymaki yielded four goals on 12 shots in Wednesday's 5-2 preseason loss to the Ducks.
Analysis: This poor output should be forgiven as Niittmaki is still getting acclimated in San Jose and it was only the first exhibition game. Niittymaki is battling for the top netminder role with fellow Finn Antti Niemi.
Antero Niittymaki: Goalie Battle with Niemi Begins
News: As expected, Niitymaki will compete with Antti Niemi for the top goalie spot vacated by Evgeni Nabokov, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: "Obviously I don't know how it's going to affect ice time," Niittymaki said of the Sharks adding Niemi, "but then I never talked with them about that when I signed. Healthy competition is always a good thing. We're both Finns, and I'm sure we'll get along well." Keep a close eye on this competition in training camp. If Niittymaki is ultimately named the starter, then he is worth drafting as a second or third goaltender on your fantasy team.
News: The San Jose Sharks moved swiftly to replace longtime goalie Evgeni Nabokov on Thursday, signing veteran Finnish goalie Antero Niittymaki to a two-year, $4 million deal. Sharks general manager Doug Wilson targeted Niittymaki in the opening minutes of free agency, and Niittymaki was thrilled that the first inquiry about his services came from Western Conference finalist San Jose, which won the Presidents' Trophy in 2009 and finished one point shy of the NHL's best record last season. "When they announced that they're not going to offer Nabokov a new deal, every goalie in the league knew a spot was open," said Niittymaki, who spent last season with Tampa Bay after starting his NHL career in Philadelphia. "Obviously you're hoping, because the Sharks have been one of the best teams in the league for a couple of years now, that you get that call."
Analysis: Nabokov was the Sharks' starting goalie for most of the past decade, but the Sharks announced in June that they wouldn't re-sign him. Wilson believes high-priced starting goalies are unnecessary luxuries in the NHL's salary-cap era. When San Jose set to work finding a lower-priced goalie in the mold of Chicago's Antti Niemi and Philadelphia's Michael Leighton, Niittymaki stood out. "We felt that we wanted to go get the guy that we wanted, and we were certainly proactive in that," Wilson said. "We thought we'd be a pretty attractive fit for him. We're excited to have him for our tandem, because we do have faith in our young goalies." Niittymaki will join Germany's Thomas Greiss and minor-leaguer Alex Stalock in the Sharks' goaltending competition this fall. However, Niittymaki has a good chance to begin the season as the Sharks' top netminder. Niittymaki spent last season with the Lightning after playing four full NHL seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. The Finnish goalie went 21-18-5 with a 2.87 goals-against average last year, and he will have a better defense in front of him with San Jose. This signing makes Niittymaki a nice Fantasy sleeper heading into 2010-11.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki won for the first time since March 25 as Tampa Bay edged the Panthers in a shootout on Saturday. Niittymaki made 29 saves.
Analysis: Niittymaki is an unrestricted free agent this offseason after signing a one-year deal last summer. With his very average numbers, Niittymaki probably didn't do enough to stick around in Tampa for another season, but he is likely to end up on another team. Depending on where he lands, Niittymaki's Fantasy value could be anywhere from a low-end No. 3 Fantasy option to a solid No. 2 flier. The Lightning TG is likely to remain an undesirable unit.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki might have made the start on Tuesday against the Hurricanes, but it was Mike Smith who was dealt the loss in the 8-5 decision. Niittymaki had a short night after he allowed five goals on 23 shots in the first period. Carolina had built a 5-1 lead before Smith took over in the second. After Tampa Bay scored its fifth goal 16:42 into the third, Niittymaki was off the hook for the loss. But Carolina still led 7-5 at the time. Smith finished with 15 saves.
Analysis: Niittymaki getting pulled just added to his recent struggles, as he is now winless in his last four outings. In fact, he has won just four times since returning from the Olympic break in March. Despite all his struggles, the Lightning still don't have enough faith to turn to Smith on a regular basis. Niittymaki remains a low-end Fantasy option, as is the Lightning TG.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki came on in relief of Mike Smith Friday during a 5-0 loss to the Rangers. Niittymaki was in net to start the second period with Tampa Bay down 4-0. He stopped 14 of the 15 shots sent his way.
Analysis: Niittymaki hasn't been very sharp of late. He's 2-3-0 in his last five starts, allowing three goals in four of them. He is more of a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning goalie Antero Niittymaki had 13 of his 22 saves in the final period of Tuesday's 3-2 loss against the Blue Jackets. Niittymaki held a 2-1 lead heading into the third before Fedor Tyutin tied the game at 6:21 and Rick Nash won it with his second goal at 7:37. Nash scored on the second of four consecutive power plays in the first 12 minutes of the final period to break a 2-2 tie. R.J. Umberger was checked to the ice by Mattias Ohlund but still managed to backhand the puck to Nash in the low slot for a shot that trickled through traffic and into the goal.
Analysis: Niittymaki has lost his last two starts after winning his previous two. In fact, he has just four victories in 12 March appearances. The Lightning have come out sluggish since the Olympic break and it shows up in Niittymaki's numbers. The Lightning aren't about to turn to Mike Smith on a full-time basis, but Niittymaki has lost a lot of Fantasy appeal. He is more of a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki allowed three goals on nine shots Saturday before being pulled just 8:52 into a 7-1 loss to the Sabres. He was replaced by Mike Smith.
Analysis: Niittymaki's stats this season are almost identical to the numbers he put up in 2008-09, but he has a 3.35 GAA since the Olympic break and is really letting his Fantasy owners down in March. He's barely worth using as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie right now, while the Lightning TG remains a barely-usable option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 47 saves during Thursday's win over the Bruins. Tampa Bay jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, and held on to win 5-3.
Analysis: Niittymaki has allowed three or more goals in three of his last four starts, but his offense has bailed him out and he's won two of those contests. He remains a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie, while the Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 27 saves during a 3-2 overtime win against the Hurricanes on Tuesday. Niittymaki held a 1-0 lead before Carolina scored twice in an 18-second frame late in the second period. He then made nine saves in the third period as Tampa Bay rallied to tie the game. Niittymaki ended a personal four-game losing streak.
Analysis: Niittymaki came into Tuesday a loser in five of his previous six outings. However, he had allowed three or fewer goals in three of those losses, so he hasn't exactly been getting a ton of offensive support. Still, he is performing better than Mike Smith and continues to hold down the starting goalie job. Niittymaki remains a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie, while the Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 25 saves Saturday in a 3-1 loss to the Capitals. He has now lost four straight starts.
Analysis: Niittymaki has now allowed eight goals over his last two starts, but is still getting most of the ice time for the Lightning. He remains a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie, while the Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki finished with 22 saves during a 6-2 loss to the Sabres on Thursday. Niittymaki was in a 4-0 hole after two periods. Tampa Bay cut the lead to 4-2 before Buffalo scored twice in the final two minutes, including an empty-net goal from Jason Pominville, who finished with a hat trick. Niittymaki lost a third straight start.
Analysis: Niittymaki didn't allow more than two goals in his previous three starts, so his previous losses weren't really his fault as he got little offensive help. Thursday was probably more on his shoulders, but Tampa Bay still did very little on offense. Niittymaki still appears to be a better option than Mike Smith, so he remains a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki stopped 26 of 28 shots against the Coyotes on Tuesday but it wasn't enough, as Tampa Bay fell to Phoenix 2-1. Niittymaki has lost his last two starts despite allowing only two goals in each.
Analysis: Niittymaki has lost three of his last four starts, but only allowed 10 goals in that stretch. He's not getting much support from his teammates on offense. He is currently the Lightning's top goalie, and as long as he doesn't go into a big free fall, he should keep the job. Niittymaki is more of a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 37 saves during a 2-1 loss to the Penguins on Sunday. Pascal Dupuis and Sergei Gonchar scored in a 2:57 span in the third period after Tampa Bay built a 1-0 lead. Gonchar scored the winning goal on a power at 5:17, blasting a slap shot past Niittymaki from just inside the blue line.
Analysis: Niittymaki has ended up with four losses in his last six outings. However, he has allowed two goals in three of his last four appearances, so it hasn't always been his fault for the losses. Niittymaki has outplayed Mike Smith in 2009-10 and is currently the Lightning's top goalie. As long as he doesn't go into a big free fall, he should keep the job. Niittymaki is more of a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 28 saves during a shocking 3-2 win against the Capitals on Friday. Niittymaki fell into a 1-0 hole before Tampa Bay scored three unanswered goals heading into the third. Brooks Laich scored on a power play with 9:51 remaining, but Niittymaki survived the onslaught for his 18th win.
Analysis: Niittymaki really needed a strong performance after losing three of his previous four outings. His play has begun to slip as of late. But Tampa Bay still trusts Niittymaki over Mike Smith at this juncture. Niittymaki is more of a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki was pulled during the second period of Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Canadiens after giving up four goals on just 13 shots. He has lost four of his last five starts.
Analysis: Niittymaki is really struggling, allowing 21 goals in his last five starts, two of which he didn't last more than 28 minutes in net. Consider him a low-end No. 2 option in deeper leagues for now, while the Lightning TG is barely worth using in Fantasy play.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 29 saves Saturday as Tampa Bay defeated the Thrashers 6-2. It was Niittymaki's first win in four starts.
Analysis: Niittymaki had allowed 15 goals in his previous three starts, so this outing was considered gem by his recent standards. The Lightning have been desperate for one of their two goalies to step up lately, and maybe Niittymaki is ready to claim the concrete No. 1 job back for himself again. Consider him a low-end No. 2 option in deeper leagues for now, while the Lightning TG is barely worth using in Fantasy play.
News: Tampa Bay G Antero Niittymaki wasn't exactly sharp in net over the first two periods on Tuesday against the Flyers. Still, his teammates managed a few goals and by the end of the second period, the score was tied at two. That is where it all fell apart for Niittymaki and the Lightning. Philly scored five times in the third period to win the game 7-2. Niittymaki allowed four of those goals and six total on the game as he made just 25 of 31 saves. He was removed late in the game for Mike Smith, who allowed Jeff Carter to score the game's final goal and stopped two shots.
Analysis: Niittymaki takes the loss on Tuesday and has now lost two straight and has allowed 15 goals in his last three starts. Needless to say, that is not very good. It isn't like Smith has been much better in this dismal season for the Lightning. Continue to view Niittymaki as a low-end No. 2 option in deeper formats, while the Lightning TG and Smith are also backup choices.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki, who was yanked from his previous start after allowing four goals in the first period, gave up five goals on 33 shots Saturday afternoon as Tampa Bay fell 5-4 to the Islanders.
Analysis: Niittymaki was playing great hockey in his eight starts before these back-to-back brutal outings, so many Fantasy owners in deeper leagues will have been burned by his performance in Week 19 (Feb. 8-14). This slump is likely to bring Mike Smith back into play in Tampa Bay, but Niittymaki should count himself lucky that the Olympic break is coming up, which might help his cause. Continue to view Niittymaki as a low-end No. 2 option in deeper formats, while the Lightning TG is also a backup choice.
News: Lightning G Mike Smith with dealt with the loss on Thursday against the Bruins despite putting up a valiant effort in relief of Antero Niittymaki. Boston jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Niittymaki, who made 17 saves, in the first period, so coach Rick Tocchet replaced him with Mike Smith in the second period. The Bruins scored on their first shot against Smith to make it 5-0. He then stopped the next 14 shots he faced and Tampa Bay scored four unanswered goals. However, Tampa Bay couldn't complete the comeback and Smith took the loss.
Analysis: Niittymaki had won his previous four starts and hadn't allowed more than two goals in his previous eight outings. But all good things must come to an end. At least he hasn't lost in regulation since Jan. 19. Tampa Bay has turned to Niittymaki since he has the hot hand. But Thursday's loss could open up a start for Smith. We still like Niittymaki at this point, so consider him the better start in Fantasy out of the two Tampa goalies. The Lightning TG is a No. 2 option.
News: Tampa Bay G Antero Niittymaki made a whopping 39 saves on Tuesday against the Vancouver Canucks and he held off the Canucks to win 3-1. He stopped all but one of the shots Vancouver sent his way in the game. The lone goal scored by Vancouver came in the second period by Ryan Kesler.
Analysis: Goalies don't get much hotter than Niittymaki is right now. He's won four straight starts and seven of his last eight -- with one overtime loss mixed in -- to improve his season record to 16-9-5. As long as he's this hot, start him in all Fantasy leagues. The Lightning TG should also get some consideration while the team is winning.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 25 saves Saturday in a 2-1 overtime win over the Flames.
Analysis: Niittymaki has now won six of his last seven starts and appears to have his hands securely on the No. 1 job in Tampa for the time being. He has better stats than Mike Smith and deserves to be getting the majority of the action. Feel free to use Niittymaki as a No. 2 option in deeper leagues. The Lightning TG should also get some consideration while the team is winning.
News:The Sports Xchange reports the recent play of goaltender Antero Niittymaki may have vaulted the Finnish netminder into No. 1 status with the Lightning. Although team officials continue to hold to the notion that Mike Smith is the team's top goaltender, things might be in for a bit of a change. Niittymaki, who signed a one-year contract with Tampa Bay as a free agent in the summer, has played more like the No. 1 as the Lightning has inched into a playoff position.
Analysis: Since being pulled twice in a three-game span from Jan. 16-19, Niittyamaki has been on a tear. Heading into Saturday's game against Calgary, Niittymaki is 5-0-1 in his past six starts with a 1.12 goals-against average and .963 save percentage. He hasn't allowed more than two goals in any of those six starts. In the team's past 11 games, Niittymaki has started 10 times. Though six of those starts came while Smith was out with a neck strain, Niittymaki has earned the opportunity to stay between the pipes. We aren't quite sure what Tampa has in store as the trade deadline approaches. It seems neither Niittymaki nor Smith is untouchable. We will just have to wait and see. Niittymaki is the current flavor of the month and the better start in Fantasy among the two netminders. The Lightning TG is at best a No. 2 option.
News: Tampa Bay goalie Antero Niittymaki won for the fifth time in his last six starts during a 5-2 win against the Islanders on Thursday. Niittymaki did a nice job of battling back from a 2-1 deficit midway through the second period. He stopped six shots in the third period as he kept New York off the board and finished with 34 saves.
Analysis: While Mike Smith is back from a neck injury, Tampa Bay continues to lean on Niittymaki since he has the hot hand. 2 option.
News: Tampa Bay goaltender Antero Niittymaki allowed only a lonely second-period goal to score on Tuesday as the Lightning defeated the Coyotes, 2-1. The Lightning netminder stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced. Todd White was the only Thrasher who could beat him on this day.
Analysis: Niittymaki only allowed one goal in his previous outing and still managed to take the overtime loss. Clearly, he's playing well right now as he's won four of his last five starts and the only loss he allowed just one goal. In fact, he's allowed three goals total in his last four starts. You start him across the board right now, but remember that Tampa Bay isn't a very good team. Even with Mike Smith healthy again, the Lightning are going to ride the hot hand of Niittymaki until he cools off. He remains a stopgap Fantasy start. The Lightning TG is at best a No. 2 option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki couldn't hold a one-goal lead in regulation or the shootout during Friday's 2-1 loss to the Ducks. Niittymaki had his career-high scoreless streak end at 146 minutes, 13 seconds on James Wisniewski's goal 6:36 into the second. The stretch included a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night. The Tampa Bay team goalie shutout streak record is 170 minutes, 6 seconds, set by John Grahame in the 2005-06 season. Niittymaki made 31 saves in the loss. "He's given us a chance to win every night here," coach Rick Tocchet said.
Analysis: Niittymaki had a three-game winning streak snapped and has allowed only four goals in his last four games. Even with Mike Smith healthy again, the Lightning are going to ride the hot hand of Niittymaki until he cools off. He remains a stopgap Fantasy start. The Lightning TG is at best a No. 2 option.
News:Vincent Lecavalier scored a nifty goal and added an assist, Antero Niittymaki made 33 saves and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-0 on Wednesday. Niittymaki recorded his first shutout of the season and fifth overall. He made a glove save during a first-period breakaway by Montreal left wing Benoit Pouliot.
Analysis: Niittymaki has won three straight starts and four of five. He has allowed two goals or less in each victory. Mike Smith did return from a six-game absence on Wednesday because of a neck injury, but Tampa Bay chose to ride the hot hand of Niittymaki and it paid off. Unfortunately, Niittymaki is going to lose playing time as soon as his hot streak thins out. He remains a stopgap Fantasy start. The Lightning TG is at best a No. 2 option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 37 saves Saturday in a 2-1 shootout win over the Thrashers. He is now 15-0 all-time against Atlanta.
Analysis: Niittymaki has now won three of his last four starts as he fills in for usual No. 1 Mike Smith, who remains banged up. Smith is getting close to a return though, so you might want to avoid Niittymaki in Fantasy Week 17 (Jan. 25-31). The Lightning TG remains a low-end Fantasy option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 20 saves during a 3-2 overtime win against the Maple Leafs on Thursday. Niittymaki battled back from a pair of one-goal deficits and allowed both goals on the power play. Niittymaki won for the second time in three outings.
Analysis: Niittymaki hasn't done a great job in Mike Smith's absence, having been pulled a few times. But coach Rick Tocchet really can't afford to trust an untested rookie in Dustin Tokarski. Smith practiced on Thursday and appears on the mend, so Niittymaki's time as a starter could be running out. The Lightning TG is a low-end Fantasy option.
News: Tampa Bay G Antero Niittymaki was downright awful in net on Tuesday and was pulled after two periods against the Rangers. His replacement, Dustin Tokarski, was not much better in the 8-2 loss. Niittymaki stopped 15 shots and allowed five goals to score in two periods on the ice. The Rangers scored three times against him in the opening period and added two more before he was lifted. Tokarski came on for the 3rd and allowed three more goals while making just eight stops on Rangers' shots. It was an embarrassing display of goaltending for the Lightning to be sure.
Analysis: This is the second time Niittymaki has allowed five goals in his last three starts, though he did win the start in between. His January record now stands at 2-4-0, however, while his overall record is at .500 again at 9-9-4. Tokarski has no record and may never get one as his second appearance of the season was not a successful one. Niittymaki is starting until Mike Smith gets healthy and that apparently cant' come soon enough for the Lightning. He is a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option and Tokarski has no value at this time. The Lightning TG remains a low-end Fantasy flier as well.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki finished with 20 saves in a relatively stress-free night during a 3-2 win against the Hurricanes on Monday. It was a far better result than his last outing at Florida, where he allowed five goals on 18 shots before being pulled in the third period. Niittymaki did lose a pair of one-goal leads before Steve Downiescored the final go-ahead goal 9:11 into the third. Niittymaki ended a two-game losing streak.
Analysis: Niittymaki is likely to start at least one more game as Mike Smith recovers from a neck strain. Smith has been playing much better up until his recent setback, sending Niittymaki into a more traditional backup role. There are still rumors surfacing that Smith is on the trading block, so Niittymaki could gain some more Fantasy value down the road. However, he still has low-end Fantasy appeal until further notice. The Lightning TG remains a low-end Fantasy flier as well.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki was pulled after two periods of Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Panthers after allowing five goals on 18 shots. He was replaced by Dustin Tokarski.
Analysis: Niittymaki hasn't really taken advantage of his chance to start a bit more while Mike Smith deals with his neck injury. Smith isn't likely to play Tuesday, so Niittymaki will probably get a chance to redeem himself in that game, but you're better off ignoring him in all but the deepest Fantasy leagues for now. The Lightning TG is at best a No. 2 option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki stopped 26 shots during a 3-2 loss to the Panthers on Thursday. Niittymaki carried a 2-1 lead into the third period before Cory Stillman and Rostislav Olesz had third-period goals. Stillman tied it at 2 on an in-close goal at 8:53 of the third. Olesz then made it 3-2 from the top of the left circle with 7:39 to play. Niittymaki lost for the second time in four starts despite not allowing more than three goals in any of those outings.
Analysis: Niittymaki was in net after Mike Smith hurt his neck on Tuesday. The good news for Tampa Bay is that Smith's injury is considered minor. The bad news for Niittymaki is that his time in net could be short-lived. Niittymaki still has low-end Fantasy appeal until further notice. The Lightning TG is also a low-end option.
News: Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith was shaken up at 10:39 of the 1st period on Tuesday against the Capitals when Washington winger Brooks Laich, who was penalized for interference on the goalkeeper, skated into him and made contact in the upper body-head area. Smith remained in the game, but then left seven minutes into the second. There was no immediate word on why Smith, who missed half of last season with post-concussion symdrome, departed. Smith stopped 10 of the 12 shots he faced in the game and earned the victory. Antero Niittymaki entered for him and ended up stopping 22 of the 24 shots he faced as the Lightning beat the Capitals, 7-4.
Analysis: Smith has won three of his last four starts and has been playing well between the pipes of late. Hopefully this injury isn't too serious but it is definitely something to keep an eye on over the next week of games. Niittymaki is 7-6-4 on the year and has given way to Smith as the team's No. 1 option. You might consider using Smith as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Lightning TG is a low-end option. Niittymaki doesn't have much value at this time.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 27 saves Saturday in a 4-1 loss to the Flyers. The final Philadelphia goal was an empty-netter.
Analysis: This was Niittymaki's first start since Dec. 18 as the Lightning have been relying heavily on the hot glove and stick of Mike Smith. Don't start Niittymaki in any Fantasy leagues at the moment. The Lightning TG remains a No. 2 option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki returned from his personal leave on Monday to provide a backup presence for Mike Smith against the Bruins. Niittymaki was away from the team to be with his wife, who was giving birth over the weekend.
Analysis: The Lightning have turned to Smith a bit more in December, leaving Niittymaki on the bench in more of a backup role. Continue to view Niittymaki as a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News: The Boston Globe reports that Lightning G Mike Smith was first off the ice Monday, an indication he's likely to get the start Monday for Tampa Bay's game vs. Boston.
Analysis: Smith has been playing decent hockey lately, but his owners know how quickly Smith's fortunes can go in reverse. Smith has value as a low-end No. 2 option in deeper leagues for Week 13 (Dec. 28-Jan. 3), while the Lightning TG is barely worth using in Fantasy play at the moment, although Tampa Bay has won three of their last four games.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki missed Saturday's win over the Thrashers to be with his wife for the birth of the couple's daughter.
Analysis: Niittymaki should be back in Fantasy Week 13 (Dec. 23-Jan. 3), but he hasn't been playing too well lately and has lost starts to Mike Smith again recently. Only use him in leagues that use average points for the time being.
News: The St. Pete Times reports that Lightning G Mike Smith will get the start Monday against the Islanders. Smith shut out New York back on Dec. 5.
Analysis: Smith has been a disappointment this season for Tampa Bay and continues to lose starts to Antero Niittymaki. If he plays well on Monday he could get at least two starts in Fantasy Week 12 (Dec. 21-27), but you should only risk him in the deepest of leagues if your goalie situation is a mess. The Lightning TG remains a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 23 saves during a 6-3 win on Friday against the Blues. Niittymaki trailed 1-0 midway through the first period before Tampa Bay would scored three unanswered goals. St. Louis cut the lead to 4-3 in the third before Jeff Halpern and Steven Stamkos both scored their second goals to ice the game for Niittymaki, who had his first win since Nov. 22.
Analysis: Niittymaki started the season off very well and emerged as the team's starting goalie for a bit while Mike Smith struggled. But the tables have turned and Niittymaki is now the one fighting for starts. There are rumors Tampa Bay is looking to trade Smith, but if Niittymaki doesn't get back on track, that might be a moot point. Continue to view Niittymaki as a No. 3 Fantasy option and flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Tampa Bay G Antero Niittymaki was pulled from Tuesday's game against the Predators after allowing four goals and stopping only 10 shots. His replacement, Mike Smith, did not fare much better. Smith gave up three goals and could stop just 10 shots the rest of the way as the Lightning lost the game, 7-4.
Analysis: Niittymaki takes the loss in this one as Smith came in for mop up duty and didn't fare much better against the Predators. Niittymaki is winless in his last six appearances (0-5-0). He hasn't been awful in those outings before Tuesday, however. He just hasn't gotten a lot of offensive support. Niittymaki has made only four appearances in December as Tampa Bay is leaning on Smith, who was pretty bad himself. Niittymaki and Smith will likely share time in net going forward. Continue to view Niittymaki as a No. 3 Fantasy option and flier in leagues that use average points per game. Smith is worth even less than that and the Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News:Antero Niittymaki stopped 25 shots for the Lightning during a 4-0 loss to the Blackhawks on Sunday. Patrick Kane scored the lone goal of the first period at 7:42 when his high wrist shot from the right point beat Niittymaki and clanked in off the left post. Marian Hossa had beaten Niittymaki with a close-in move about three minutes earlier, but Smaby swept the puck away as it reached goal line. Eager made it 2-0 midway through the second when he was left open at the edge of the crease and converted Hossa's centering pass. Hossa extended Chicago's lead to 3-0 with 15.3 seconds left in the second period. Jonathan Toews made it 4-0 at 6:01 of the third when he chipped in a rebound of Dustin Byuglien's shot from the slot.
Analysis: Niittymaki is winless in his last five appearances (0-4-0). He hasn't been awful in those outings. He just hasn't gotten a lot of offensive support. Niittymaki has made only three appearances in December as Tampa Bay is leaning on Mike Smith. There are rumors running rampant in Tampa Bay. Some say the Flyers are interested in reacquiring Niittymaki other says the Lightning are ready to trade Smith and make Niittymaki the full-time netminder. Either way, Niittymaki and Smith are still both with the Lightning and will likely share time in net. Continue to view Niittymaki as a No. 3 Fantasy option and flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News:Antero Niittymaki made 33 saves for the Lightning during a 2-1 shootout loss on Friday against the Avalanche. Wolski had the Avalanche's only regulation and shootout goal. The Avalanche outshot the Lightning 26-12 after the first period but were on the verge of their second straight 1-0 loss when Wolski came through. Paul Stastny skated down the left boards and his centering pass to the front of the net banked off a driving Wolski's leg with 7:49 remaining. The way Niittymaki was playing, Colorado needed a lucky bounce. The Tampa Bay goalie was close to his first shutout of the season when Wolski tied it. "You knew they were going to come, we just didn't have an answer for them," Tampa Bay coach Rick Tocchet said. "Actually, we had one answer -- Niittymaki. That was our only answer." Niittymaki had 18 saves in the third period alone. "We just sat back in the third period and let them con in our zone," forward Alex Tanguay said. "We were making stupid mistakes and not playing good."
Analysis: Niittymaki was briefly attended to late in the first period after stopping a shot by Ryan O'Reilly. Niittymaki stayed in the game, but is still winless in four outings. It hasn't been entirely his fault since Tampa Bay has struggled on offense lately. There are rumors running rampant in Tampa Bay. Some say the Flyers are interested in reacquiring Niittymaki other says the Lightning are ready to trade Mike Smith and make Niittymaki the full-time netminder. Either way, Niittymaki and Smith are still both with the Lightning and will likely share time in net. Although, Smith has played more lately. Continue to view him as a No. 3 Fantasy option and flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki blanked the Devils over the first two periods on Friday night but then allowed three period goals to fall 3-2. Niittymaki finished with 16 saves.
Analysis: Niittymaki has now lost three straight starts, but it's not like Mike Smith is playing well enough to take too much time away from the Finn. For now, Niittymaki can't be viewed as anything more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie. The Lightning TG is also a low-end Fantasy unit.
News: Tampa Bay G Antero Niittymaki had a decent performance on Monday against the Avalanche but could not keep up with opposing goalie Craing Anderson who pitched a shutout. Niittymaki made 26 saves in the game and allowed two goals. His record dropped to 6-3-3 on the season with the loss.
Analysis: Niittymaki has now lost three of his last four decisions as he continues to split starts with Mike Smith. Although he has clearly outperformed Smith this season, the two do still split starting chances. That means Niittymaki can't be viewed as anything more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie. The Lightning TG is a low-end Fantasy unit.
News: Tampa Bay G Antero Niittymaki lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Wednesday night as he allowed all four goals to cross the net. Toronto scored on him twice to open the scoring in the game and added two more in the 2nd period to cruise to victory.
Analysis: The Tampa Bay goalie lost for just the second time this season in regulation as his record falls to 6-2-3. He had won three of his previous four starts with one overtime loss mixed in. Niittymaki has clearly outplayed Mike Smith in the early season, but Tampa stands by Smith. Unless Smith continues to have bad outing after bad outing, it's going to take a lot for Niittymaki to become the team's full-time netminder. Continue to view him as a No. 3 Fantasy option and flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning goaltender Antero Niittymaki, who has won 15 straight against the Southeast Division and three of four overall, improved to 15-0-0 in his career against Atlanta with a 4-3 win on Sunday. Niittymaki stopped 28 of 31 shots to show why he began the game as the NHL leader with a 1.93 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage. Improving to 6-1-3 in his first season with Tampa Bay, Niittymaki didn't face a shot in overtime. "Hopefully, he can keep it up," Lightning forward Ryan Malone said. "He made some big saves."
Analysis: Niittymaki has clearly outplayed Mike Smith in the early season, but Tampa stands by Smith. Unless Smith continues to have bad outing after bad outing, it's going to take a lot for Niittymaki to become the team's full-time netminder. Continue to view him as a No. 3 Fantasy option and flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki stopped 29 of 30 shots Saturday against the Kings, but fell 2-1 in a shootout.
Analysis: Niittymaki continues to hold on to the starting job in Tampa Bay, although that isn't exactly a hot spot in Fantasy terms. Continue to view him as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy flier in deeper leagues for the time being. The Lightning TG is more of a low-end option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki continued his decent play Thursday when he made 31 saves in a 4-3 shootout win over the Wild. He has now won three of his last four starts.
Analysis: It's clear that the Lightning are just going to roll with Niittymaki until he gives them a reason to think about bring Mike Smith back into the fold again. Niittymaki is certainly worth a flier in deeper two-goalie formats right now while he's hot. The Lightning TG is more of a low-end option for the time being.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki made 36 saves Saturday to power the Lightning in a 3-1 win over the Canadiens. Niittymaki now has a 1.95 GAA and a .940 save percentage.
Analysis: Niittymaki's stellar play this season has meant a drop in Fantasy value for supposed No. 1 in Tampa, Mike Smith, and a rise in Fantasy ownership for Niittymaki from 12 to 26 percent. The Lightning only play twice in Fantasy Week 6 (Nov. 9-15), so Niittymaki might not be worth starting in the scoring period, but he's certainly worth picking up as a nice bench option in deeper leagues. The Lightning TG remains a low-end option for now.
News:Jason Spezza scored a power-play goal 4:17 into overtime past Antero Niittymaki to give the Ottawa Senators a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night. Spezza, sidelined the previous two games because of back pain, drove a slap shot past Niittymaki after Tampa Bay's Mattias Ohlund was sent off for holding 3 minutes into overtime. Niittymaki stopped 26 shots in his second start in a row.
Analysis: Niittymaki jumped back into net on Thursday after his 40-save win on Tuesday against the Maple Leafs. Tampa Bay hasn't been afraid to play Niittymaki in 2009-10 and that's not good news for Mike Smith, who has been all over the place with his starts. Niittymaki is more of a flier in leagues that use average points per game, but might be worth holding onto in larger formats as a No. 3 or No. 4 Fantasy option as well. The Lightning TG is a low-end option.
News: Tampa Bay G Antero Niittymaki was solid between the pipes on Tuesday in a 2-1 overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday. Niittymaki allowed only one goal in the game on Ian White's wrist shot in the 3rd period. That score tied it up but the Lightning won for him in the overtime period. Niittymaki stopped 40 of 41 shots in all in the game.
Analysis: Niittymaki got the start after coming into the game in relief of Mike Smith on Monday. He has now allowed a total of three goals in his last three appearances and his record is at 4-1-1 on the season in six games. Tampa Bay is glad to have some goalie insurance in Niittymaki, but they stand behind Smith as their starting goalie. Niittymaki is more of a flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Lightning TG is at best a No. 2 Fantasy unit.
News: Lightning G Mike Smith was peppered for five goals and eventually pulled in favor of Antero Niittymaki during Monday's 6-2 loss against the Flyers. Smith fell behind 2-0 after one period and only trailed 3-1 in the second before Philly scored two goals in 35-second frame. Smith was then pulled trailing 5-1. He made 13 saves. Niittymaki allowed one goal on 13 shots.
Analysis: Niittymaki started four times in October and made his first relief appearance on Monday. Tampa Bay is glad to have some goalie insurance in Niittymaki, but they stand behind Smith as their starting goalie. Niittymaki is more of a flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News: Tampa Bay G Antero Niittymaki stopped 37 shots on Saturday in a game against the New Jersey Devils. It wasn't enough, however, as Martin Brodeur was every bit as good. Niittymaki allowed just one goal in regulation and overtime but David Clarkson snuck one past him for the game winner in the shootout.
Analysis: Niittymaki is now 2-1-1 on the season for the Lightning. Niittymaki has been better than Mike Smith to open the season but is still not considered the No. 1 goalie just yet. Niittymaki is still just a No. 3 Fantasy option until he is able to take the starting job away from Smith. The Lightning TG is at best a No. 2 Fantasy unit.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki came away with the loss on Saturday, getting beat by the reigning Stanley Cup champion Penguins. Niittymaki made 29 saves in the game and allowed four goals, taking his first loss of the season.
Analysis: Niittymaki looked pretty good in his first two starts this season, allowing two goals in each outing and earning the win. He got only one goal in support on Saturday against the Penguins, which will usually lead to a loss.
News:Ryan Malone's game-winning goal came on an assist from backup goalie Antero Niittymaki. Malone scored on a rebound in the third period to give the Lightning a 3-2 victory against the Florida Panthers on Monday night. After Niittymaki made a save on David Booth's breakaway, Steven Stamkos picked up the loose puck and his shot after an end-to-end rush was stopped by Florida's Tomas Vokoun. However, Malone scored his fifth goal of the season when he converted the rebound from near the post to put Tampa Bay up 3-2. Niittymaki made 31 saves and was credited with an assist on Malone's goal. "I actually didn't see the whole play," Niittymaki said. "I was blocked for a couple seconds (after the save), but I saw them score."
Analysis: Lightning head coach Rick Tocchet declined to answer when asked if Niittymaki or No. 1 goalie Mike Smith will start Thursday against Ottawa. But the fact remains Niittymaki has won two starts and Smith is winless in three outings. Don't be surprised if Tampa continues to ride the hot hand of Niittymaki until he cools off. We don't believe their is a goalie controversy brewing just yet in Tampa. The Lightning really do like Smith and added Niittymaki in the offseason for stretches like this when Smith is mired in a slump. Smith still remains a No. 2 Fantasy goalie, while Niittymaki is a No. 3 option and flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Lightning TG is nothing more than a No. 2 option.
News: Lightning G Antero Niittymaki got his first start of the season on Saturday against the Hurricanes and ended up earning the win. Niittymaki allowed only two goals in the contest, making 24 saves as his record improved to 1-0-0.
Analysis: The Lightning continue to stick with Mike Smith in net and Lightning coach Rick Tocchet still anticipates that he will get the majority of the starts. However, if Smith is injured or falters this season, Niittymaki is an ample replacement. Think of Niittymaki as a No. 3 option and handcuff for Smith. The Lightning TG remains a low-end Fantasy unit.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Lightning coach Rick Tocchet said he anticipates giving G Mike Smith a bulk of the work in net for the early part of the season, even though Smith missed the final two months of last season with a concussion. With Smith likely to see plenty of action, backup G Antero Niittymaki may have to wait a while to make his Tampa Bay debut. "Smitty's our guy, he's our No. 1," Tocchet said. "We are lucky to have Nitty, who has been a one with the Flyers before, but we are going to go with Smith for now."
Analysis: The Lightning are still backing Smith after he gave up six goals in the opener against Atlanta. We will just call it a bad night. Consider Smith a No. 2 Fantasy goalie since he will see most of the starts for Tampa Bay. However, we just don't expect a lot of wins. Niittymaki is at best a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Lightning TG remains a low-end option.
News:The Sports Xchange reports with Karri Ramo, who was projected to be the backup to Mike Smith, signing a contract to play in Russia, Tampa Bay filled the void by bringing in former Philadelphia netminder Antero Niitymaki. Despite having undergone two hip procedures, Niittymaki put up solid numbers with the Flyers last season, winning 15 games with a 2.76 goals against average and .912 save percentage. "The hip is good," Niitymaki said. "I'm not going to lie because everybody knows that it's not like a normal healthy hip, but it's as healthy as it can be. The doctor said I'll be fine many years from now and I'll be able to play many years from now. I don't think it's going to be any problem and I feel 100 percent right now."
Analysis: Niittymaki has had his chances to be a starting goalie on the NHL level, but he has never been able to maintain long-term success. He seems to work better in smaller stretches and that is the mark of a backup goalie. Niittymaki is insurance in case Smith isn't recovered from post-concussion syndrome. However, Niittymaki is merely a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. He can also be a handcuff option for Smith owners. The Lightning TG is still at best a low-end option.
News: The Lightning have signed free agent G Antero Niittymaki to be the backup to starter Mike Smith.
Analysis: Niittymaki was 15-8-6 with a 2.76 GAA and .912 save percentage in 32 games last season. He will be a backup once again in Tampa, but a very good one. He remains a low-end Fantasy flier on Draft Day.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Ray Emery is the only goalie under contract for the Flyers heading into the June amateur draft. There is a possibility the club will re-sign Antero Niittymaki as a backup, but that seems unlikely as the club looks for some inexpensive experience on the free-agent market, perhaps by even reaching out to former Flyers netminder Robert Esche, who, like Emery, played in Russia last season.
Analysis: Niittymaki was 15-8-6 with a 2.76 GAA and .912 save percentage in 32 games last season. He has primarily been Martin Biron's backup the last two seasons after getting his chance, and failing, to be Philly's top netminder. It appears he is going to have to be a backup goalie to start the 2009-10 season. Unless that changes, consider Niittymaki a low-end Fantasy flier Draft Day.
News: Philadelphia G Antero Niittymaki was able to take Saturday's game against the Senators into the shootout period but was unable to get the win as he fell 4-3. He allowed two of the five shots he faced to get past him.
Analysis: Niittymaki's record falls to 15-8-6 on the season with the overtime loss. He has not won a game since March 3, more than a month ago. He is getting more playing time lately as the Flyers are saving Martin Biron a bit for the playoff run. He is a No. 3 option that can be used in leagues that use averages as a flier. The Flyers TG on the other hand is a higher-end option.
News: Philadelphia and starting goalie Martin Biron went down 3-0 early in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Maple Leafs. Biron was pulled after 33 minutes and Antero Niittymaki finished the rest of the way. Niittymaki didn't allow a goal and stopped all 10 shots he faced.
Analysis: Niittymaki was sharp on Wednesday in relief of Biron but that shouldn't change the fact that Biron is the team's No. 1 starter. Niittymaki might get a spot start down the stretch and some relief duty, but he should be considered more of a flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News:Antero Niittymaki made 27 saves for the Flyers during a 4-3 loss to the Bruins. Boston scored three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead against Philadelphia and Niittymaki in the first. Milan Lucic teamed with Michael Ryder on a 2-on-1 rush to tie it at 10:39. After Dennis Wideman scored with a slap shot through a screen with the Bruins holding a two-man advantage at 13:55, Lucic added his second goal at 17:54, scoring from inside the left circle. Mark Recchi reached around Philadelphia defenseman Braydon Coburn to poke in a rebound of a shot by Chuck Kobasew at 4:21 of the third period to put Boston on top 4-2.
Analysis: Niittymaki has lost his last three starts. His latest defeat comes a day after coach John Stevens anointed Martin Biron the team's starting goalie. Niittymaki might get a spot start down the stretch and some relief duty, but he should be considered more of a flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki made 35 saves during a 4-1 loss to the Rangers Sunday. Niittymaki never led in the game, but was deadlocked in a 1-all tie before Nik Antropov scored the go-ahead goal on a power play 8:27 into the second. It was the second straight game Niittymaki lost and allowed four goals.
Analysis: Niittymaki was on a nice run for a bit after the All-Star break, but Martin Biron has begun to heat up and seems to have solidified the No. 1 job. Coach John Stevens will still throw Niittymaki a few starts, but he remains more of a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki lasted just one period during Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Flames. After new Calgary acquisition Olli Jokinen scored twice and the Flames scored four times on 19 shots in the first period, coach John Stevens pulled Niittymaki from net in favor of Martin Biron, who allowed just one goal on 22 shots the rest of the way.
Analysis: The Flyers really don't have a true No. 1 goalie at this time, although it could have been Niittymaki had Biron been traded at Wednesday's deadline. He was not, so the two continue to battle for PT. Niittymaki is a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said Wednesday he had no serious trade discussions about Anaheim defenseman Chris Pronger, refused to part with the prospects needed to pry defenseman Jay Bouwmeester away from Florida and never seriously considered trading goalie Martin Biron. Biron, who led the Flyers to the Eastern Conference finals last season, is locked in a battle with Antero Niittymaki for the starting job this year. "That was never really an issue," Holmgren said. "I like our goaltending."
Analysis: Niittymaki made 22 saves during a 4-2 win against the Bruins Tuesday and has four victories in his last six outings. He is 15-5-5 on the season with a 2.59 GAA and .916 save percentage. He has been playing so well that the Flyers just can't turn their back on him. Niittymaki would have gained considerable Fantasy appeal had Biron been dealt, but since he is staying put, Niittymaki is a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki made 22 saves during a 4-2 win against the Bruins Tuesday. Niittymaki allowed the first goal of the game to Patrice Bergeron on a power play at 14:25 of the first, but then Philadelphia scored four unanswered goals before Stephane Yelle scored on a power play with 42 seconds left. Niittymaki won for the fourth time in six starts.
Analysis: There are trade rumors surfacing that the Flyers are trying to deal goalie Martin Biron to clear up some cap space for acquiring D Jay Bouwmeester. If that eventually comes to fruition, that means Niittymaki would then be the unquestioned starter in Philly. If that happens, then Niittymaki would likely become a reliable No. 2 Fantasy goalie for a playoff contending team. For now, he is a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:Mathieu Schneider scored with a man advantage at 3:21 of overtime past Antero Niittymaki to give the Canadiens a 4-3 victory over the Flyers on Friday. Niittymaki, locked in a battle for Martin Biron for the starting goalie job, stopped 32 shots. He lost an early 2-0 lead int the first period while allowing Montreal to score three unanswered goals. He stopped 17 shots during scoreless second and third periods before Schneider netted the game winner in OT.
Analysis: Niittymaki has played very well since the All-Star break and that has given coach John Stevens some food for thought. The competition has made Biron try a little harder in net, so Stevens is likely to throw Niittymaki a start every week. Still, he is more of a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki made 33 saves during a 4-2 comeback win Tuesday against the Capitals. Niittymaki fell behind 2-0 after Alex Ovechkin notched his 44th goal 4:19 into the second. But then Philadelphia scored the final four goals, including three in the third. Niittymaki stopped 11 shots during a scoreless third as he won for the third time in four starts.
Analysis: Niittymaki has been very good since mid-January, winning six of his last eight appearances. Coach John Stevens has gone to him a bit more as of late because he is playing well, but Martin Biron is still seeing a majority of the starts for Philly. Consider Niittymaki a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Philadelphia G Antero Niittymaki dressed as Martin Biron's backup on Thursday after being sidelined for two games because of the flu. Biron has won three straight starts including the two he won when Niittymaki was out.
Analysis: The Flyers play only once more this week, so owners that benched Niittymaki made the right play. However, he is safe to use for the upcoming scoring period as a No. 3 option and a flier in leagues that use averages.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki did not dress for Sunday's win over the Rangers as he continues to deal with the flu.
Analysis: The Flyers only play twice in Fantasy Week 20 (Feb. 16-22), so Niittymaki will only be worth using in leagues that reward average Fantasy points in the period. With starter Martin Biron winning twice this weekend, Niittymaki's value also takes a slight hit.
News: The Flyers recalled Scott Munroe from the Philadelphia Phantoms, their American Hockey League affiliate, to serve as Biron's backup in place of Antero Niittymaki who is out with the flu. Niittymaki missed Saturday's game against the Islanders and is questionable for Sunday's game at the Rangers.
Analysis: Niittymaki has been better than Biron of late and has battled him for starts. Until Niittymaki gets back, don't have him active. He likely won't play Saturday and may not be back before the Flyers' game against the Sabres on Thursday.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki made just 18 saves during a 5-2 loss to the Senators Thursday. Philadelphia fell behind 3-0 before getting on the scoreboard eight minutes into the third. Niittymaki allowed one power-play goal while losing for just the second time in seven outings.
Analysis: Niittymaki has been on top of his game lately and that has created a goalie controversy in Philadelphia. His play has given coach John Stevens second thoughts about keeping Martin Biron in net when he is struggling. Right now nothing has been decided, but Niittymaki could gain more Fantasy value in the weeks to come. Consider him a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki got yet another start for the Flyers on Sunday, making 29 saves and allowing two goals in a 3-2 win over the Thrashers. Martin biron has lost five straight starts while Niittymaki has picked up a win in five of his last six appearances. According to The Sports Xchange, Biron surrendered three first-period goals on Saturday, then watched Niittymaki turn in two periods of scoreless relief in a 4-3 comeback win in Boston.
Analysis: While Biron has allowed 17 goals in his last five appearances, all losses, Niittymaki has won four of his last five starts, allowing 12 goals. What makes this controversy even more enticing is the fact that both goaltenders are in the final year of their contracts and the Flyers are in no rush to renegotiate. The only thing going for Biron is his strong performance in the playoffs last season, the first postseason action of his career. Niittymaki appeared in two games during the 2006 postseason in mop-up duty for Robert Esche. For Fantasy owners sake, Biron is hoping that Stevens stays true to his word and keeps him in net as the No. 1 goalie. But if Niittymaki starts winning, then Stevens might have to turn to the hot hand. Biron is barely hanging onto being a No. 2 Fantasy goalie for the time being. The Flyers TG is pretty much a No. 2 option no matter who is in net.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Flyers coach John Stevens went out of his way earlier in the week to say there was no goaltender controversy and that Martin Biron would be given plenty of starts in February to prove he is the No. 1 netminder heading into the playoffs. But with five straight losses dating to Jan. 13, Biron is practically handing the starting job to backup Antero Niittymaki. Biron surrendered three first-period goals on Saturday, then watched Niittymaki turn in two periods of scoreless relief in a 4-3 comeback win in Boston. Niittymaki will be back in goal Sunday in Atlanta when he tries to stay unbeaten against the Thrashers.
Analysis: While Biron has allowed 17 goals in his last five appearances, all losses, Niittymaki has won three of his last four starts, allowing 10 goals.
News: Philadelphia G Antero Niittymaki was able to pull out a 4-3 overtime win over the Boston Bruins after coming on in the second period for Martin Biron. He stopped all 22 shots he faced the remainder of the game as the Flyers were able to cap off the comeback with an overtime winner.
Analysis: Niittymaki has been far better than Biron this season although he has not gotten nearly as many starts. However, performances like Saturday's could get Niittymaki increased starts. He is only a No. 3 option now as this was his first start since January. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki gave up a goal to Jay McClement less than five minutes into Saturday's game against the Blues and that ended up being the game-winner. Antero gave up three more goals in the game, making 32 overall saves. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for Niittymaki.
Analysis: Niittymaki had been hot before the Flyers got blanked on Saturday, taking some wind out of his sails. Martin Biron is still the everyday starter in Philadelphia, but Niittymaki may continue getting a decent amount of starts. Niittymaki is a strong No. 3 goalie while the Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: If it weren't for a big offensive night from Mike Richards (two goals, one assist), Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki would have walked away with First Star honors after making 41 saves during a 6-1 win Friday against the Lightning. Vaclav Prospal tied the game at 1 with 2:05 left in the first period, but Niittymaki blanked Tampa Bay the rest of the way while making 26 saves in the final two periods. He also had a secondary assist on a short-handed goal by Scott Hartnell in the third.
Analysis: Niittymaki has won his last three starts and coach John Stevens might be inclined to give him a few more starts just to make sure Philadelphia gets off to the right foot in the second half. There is no goalie controversy yet with Martin Biron, but Niittymaki is still worth a look as a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is more of a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki made 28 saves to improve to 12-0 against Atlanta in his career, beating the Thrashers 5-3 on Wednesday. Niitymaki was staked a 3-0 lead heading into the third period but blew the lead. However, the Flyers came back later in the period to put two more goals on the board and give Niitymaki the win. Niittymaki is one of only two active goalies with a perfect mark in at least 10 decisions against one team. Detroit's Chris Osgood is 17-0 against Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Nittymaki may be perfect against the lowly Thrashers, but he can't earn a starting job in Philadelphia as long as Martin Biron is around. He has won two straight starts, both against inferior opponents in Florida and Atlanta. Nittymaki is playing once a week at best, so he is risky even as a flyer option. The Flyers TG remains more of a No. 2 option with Biron in net.
News: A different approach to shootouts worked out well for Simon Gagne, Antero Niittymaki and the Philadelphia Flyers. Gagne scored the only goal in the shootout, and Niittymaki stopped all three Florida shooters in the Flyers' 3-2 victory Friday. Niittymaki ended the shootout when he blocked Nathan Horton's wrist shot. Niittymaki also stopped Ville Peltonen and Michael Frolik in the tiebreaker. "I've been playing too deep in a lot of those shootouts last couple of games," Niittymaki said. "I tried to be more aggressive and I think it worked." Niittymaki came into the game with a 1-2 record in shootouts, giving up four goals in 10 attempts. "It feels good," Niittymaki said. "I haven't really felt good in a shootout this year, especially the last couple of games when I lost in a shootout. But we've been practicing a little bit and I kind of got my timing back."
Analysis: Niittymaki made 32 saves in regulation and overtime while earning his first victory since Dec. 23. He lost a 2-0 lead as Florida scored twice on the power play in the second period, but battled back for the win. Niittymaki hasn't been needed much lately with Martin Biron hitting on all cylinders, so he remains more of a flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki dressed as the team's backup goalie during Tuesday's game against the Penguins. He had missed the previous three games with a groin injury.
Analysis: Niittymaki has been a very good backup for the Flyers this season, posting a 8-3-4 record, 2.62 GAA and .913 save percentage. He is still not threatening Biron for the top job, but Niittymaki does usually start once per week when healthy. He is more of a flier in leagues that use average points per game when healthy.
News: NHL.com reports Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki, who has missed the last three games with a groin injury, is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday against the Penguins and serve as a backup to Martin Biron.
News: The injury list keeps growing for the Philadelphia Flyers. Right wing Joffrey Lupul will miss at least two weeks with a pulled abdominal muscle he sustained in Friday's win over Anaheim, and backup goaltender Antero Niittymaki will miss at least a week with a strained a groin muscle he sustained in a 2-1 shootout loss at Los Angeles on Saturday. Lupul and Niittymaki join seven other Flyers on the injury list, a season high. "I don't remember it being like this," general manager Paul Holmgren said Monday. "When you're in a position where you're dressing less than 18 healthy skaters, it's obviously not a good situation to be in."
Analysis: Niittymaki has been a very good backup for the Flyers this season, posting a 8-3-4 record, 2.62 GAA and .913 save percentage. He is still not threatening Martin Biron for the top job, but Niittymaki does usually start once per week when healthy. He is more of a flier in leagues that use average points per game when healthy. Keep Niittymaki reserved through Fantasy Week 14 (Jan. 5-11).
News: Philadelphia G Antero Niittymaki stopped 30 shots on Saturday through regulation and overtime but that wasn't enough against the Kings as the game went into a shootout tied at one. The Kings were able to score twice off Niittymaki in the shootout and the Flyers lost 2-1.
Analysis: Niittymaki was very sharp against the Kings but his teammates couldn't score the winner for him in regulation or the extra frame and he ultimately took the shootout loss. Niittymaki's time as an everyday starter with the Flyers is now over as Martin Biron has come back to the team. He is no more than a reserve or a flier for leagues that use averages. The Flyers TG is a top of the line No. 2 option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki allowed three goals to Blue Jackets on Saturday as his team was blanked in a 3-0 loss. Niittymaki has allowed nine goals in his last three starts, which will become fewer and farther between with Martin Biron back between the pipes for the Flyers.
Analysis: Niittymaki's time as an everyday starter with the Flyers is now over as Biron has come back to the team. He is no more than a reserve or a flier for leagues that use averages. The Flyers TG is a top of the line No. 2 option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki gave up four goals to the Senators on Tuesday, but ended up coming away with a 6-4 win. He made only 17 saves in the game. Niittymaki had a 2.46 GAA in his last eight starts (6-1-1) entering the game.
Analysis: With Martin Biron still sick with the flu, Niittymaki may get a chance to play once more on Thursday at Chicago. However, Biron should be able to make it back onto the ice by next week we think and that would make Niittymaki a reserve once again. When that happens, Niittymaki becomes a No. 3 goalie at best and a flyer for leagues that use averages. The Flyers TG is a high-end No. 2 option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki made 24 saves in regulation, but then allowed two of three shootout attempts to go in as the Devils edged Philadelphia 3-2 on Sunday. Niittymaki has lost only two of his last eight starts.
Analysis: Niittymaki made all three starts for the Flyers in Fantasy Week 11 (Dec. 15-21) as No. 1 Martin Biron sat with a case of the flu. Biron should be back in Week 12 (Dec. 22-28), but Niittymaki has proven he can be a useful bench guy for Biron's owners in deeper formats. The Flyers TG remains a high-end No. 2 option.
News: Flyers G Martin Biron (flu) missed Saturday's game against Washington. He remains day-to-day. Antero Niittymaki got the start in his place. Niittymaki made 47 saves and allowed just one goal on Saturday.
Analysis: When healthy, Biron is a solid low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie, especially since the Flyers are playing well lately. He might miss one more game, but plan on having him active in Fantasy Week 12 (Dec. 22-28). The Flyers TG remains a nice No. 2 option, while Niittymaki is only worth owning as a handcuff for Biron owners.
News: Philadelphia G Antero Niittymaki gave up five goals and had 26 saves in a 5-2 loss to the Canadiens on Thursday to snap a five-game winning streak. This is the third time this season he has allowed a season-high five goals this season and the second time in three games. He allowed five goals to Carolina Nov. 11 but got a 6-5 win.
Analysis: Niittymaki had a nice little streak going there with the five straight wins, but it was mostly smoke and mirrors as he only played average during that stretch. When Biron is over the flu, Niittymaki is going back on the bench. Biron is a low-end No. 1 goalie and the Flyers TG is a solid No. 2 option.
News: The News Journal reports that Flyers G Martin Biron will miss Thursday's game at Montreal with the flu. Antero Niittymaki will start in his place.
Analysis: When healthy, Biron is a solid low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie, especially since the Flyers are playing well lately. He might only miss a game or two, so you should plan on having him active in Fantasy Week 12 (Dec. 22-28). The Flyers TG remains a nice No. 2 option, while Niittymaki is only worth owning as a handcuff for Biron owners.
News: Philadelphia G Antero Niittymaki remained hot on Tuesday night in a 5-2 win over the Avalanche. Niittymaki stopped 29 shots and allowed just two goals in the easy win. He improves to 6-1-2 on the year.
Analysis: Niittymaki has now won five straight starts for the Flyers and has been getting regular starts to spell Martin Biron. He is still nothing more than a handcuff for Biron or a flier in leagues that use averages. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 option.
News: G Antero Niittymaki gave up five goals but was able to pull out a 6-5 shootout win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday. He had 26 saves in the game, but allowed the five pucks to get past him. It was his 4th straight win in net.
Analysis: Niittymaki has been getting regular starts to spell Martin Biron. This win improves his season record to 5-1-2, although he really deserved a loss on Thursday. He is still nothing more than a handcuff for Biron or a flier in leagues that use averages. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki came up with 35 saves and got an overtime goal to pick up a 2-1 overtime win. The win improves his record to 4-1-2 on the season. He has now won three straight games and allowed only five games during that span.
Analysis: Biron has been having problems playing the puck to defenders, which is part of the reason Niittymaki got the start on Saturday. Niittymaki wont play enough to be more than a Biron handcuff or a flier in leagues that use averages.
News: Twice Thursday night against the Devils, G Martin Biron played the puck directly to a Devils forward. He got away with a backhand giveaway to Jay Pandolfo earlier in the game, but cost the Flyers a crucial point in the standings when his intercepted clear resulted in Patrick Elias' game-tying goal with 90 seconds remaining in regulation. "It should have been a routine play and it wasn't," Flyers coach John Stevens said. "We work on that every day. There is not a day we get on the ice that we don't work on exchanges (between goaltender and defensemen)." It will be interesting to see if Stevens, who has been stingy with ice time this season, will bench Biron when the Flyers visit the Hurricanes on Saturday. Biron has started four straight games and 11 of the last 13.
Analysis: Marty Biron has been a goaltender in the NHL for nine seasons. He's played in nearly 400 games and has made nearly 10,000 saves. So why all of a sudden is Biron having trouble playing the puck to his defensemen? The reason may be unknown, but the result could be less starts for Biron. Biron has won just once in his last four starts and hasn't allowed less than three goals in six outings. He is clearly a viable No. 2 Fantasy goalie right now, but has halted in his progression towards becoming a No. 1 option. The Flyers TG is also a decent No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Philadelphia G Antero Niittymaki was great in goal Wednesday night in a win over the Hurricanes. Niittymaki stopped 27 shots on goal and allowed only a Chad LaRose 2nd period goal in the 3-1 win.
Analysis: Niittymaki's gem improves his record to 3-1-2 on the season for Philadelphia. He's won his last two starts, though they have come 10 days apart. He has been a decent backup this season to Martin Biron, but won't get more starts until Biron starts to struggle or is injured. Niittymaki is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a decent No. 2 option.
News:Antero Niittymaki maintained his perfect record against Atlanta and the Flyers snapped the Thrashers' five-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory Sunday night. Niittymaki, who blanked the Thrashers 7-0 with 24 saves earlier this season, is 11-0 against Atlanta. He stopped 21 shots in the third period and made 29 saves in the game. He allowed no power-play goals.
Analysis: Niittymaki is one of only two active goaltenders in the NHL with a perfect record in at least 10 decisions against one team. Chris Osgood, of the Detroit Red Wings, is 17-0 against Tampa Bay. Philadelphia plays Atlanta twice more this season, so at least we know Niittymaki will start twice more as long as he is healthy. He has been a decent backup this season to Martin Biron, but won't get more starts until Biron starts to struggle or is injured. Niittymaki is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a decent No. 2 option.
News: Flyers backup Antero Niittymaki made 21 saves in his fifth start of the season during a 4-1 loss to the Senators Thursday. He never lead in the gamer and allowed two power-play goals. He also allowed Jesse Winchester's first career score.
Analysis: Niittymaki has had his ups-and-downs this season for Philadelphia, but coach John Stevens still wants to lean on Martin Biron a bit more. Niittymaki is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a decent No. 2 option.
News: Philadelphia defeated Atlanta rather handily on Tuesday night and Flyers backup goalie Antero Niittymaki, making his fifth appearance of the season, pitched a shutout. The Flyers won 7-0 as Niittymaki stopped all 24 shots the Thrashers put up.
Analysis: This was definitely Niittymaki's best performance of the season. He had allowed 12 goals over his last three contests so the shutout gives his coach new found confidence. Starter Martin Biron has won his last two starts so that makes the Flyers TG pretty hot right now. Niittymaki is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game and the Flyers TG is now a decent No. 2 option once again.
News: The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Flyers backup G Antero Niittymaki will make a second straight start Wednesday. Starter Martin Biron is 0-3 with a 5.74 GAA and a .824 save percentage, and Niittymaki will now have started half of the Flyers' six games.
Analysis: Do we have something brewing in Philadephia? Possibly, but the Flyers staff is probably just trying anything they can right now to get this team back on track. Niittymaki could be the answer for the time being, but Biron is still the better Fantasy option for the long term. Don't start either Flyers goalie or the TG until they start to win some games.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki couldn't hold a two-goal advantage and let a win slip out of his hands Saturday against the Sharks as San Jose won 5-4 in overtime. Devin Setoguchi tied it with 4:44 left in regulation for the Sharks. San Jose struggled against Niittymaki despite a 45-17 shot advantage, but Jonathan Cheechoo's alert tip-in goal late in the second period started the Sharks' comeback from a 3-1 deficit. Dan Boyle's wrist shot 1:25 into overtime won the game. "It's not the start we envisioned," said Niittymaki, who made 40 saves. "It is what it is right now. We just have to paddle through it and find a way to win. At least we played better this game."
Analysis: Niittymaki has started two of the last three games for Philadelphia, losing both. He has allowed eight goals despite making 65 saves. Niittymaki and Martin Biron are splitting starts right now as Philadelphia tries for their first win. Biron should eventually win out, so Niittymaki is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a decent No. 2 option once the team starts winning.
News: Philadelphia G Antero Niittymaki picked up the loss in overtime against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. He allowed three goals and saved 25 shots for the Flyers in defeat.
Analysis: Niittymaki was 12-9-1 with a 2.91 GAA and .907 save percentage in 28 games last season. He will spend most of his time as Martin Biron's backup once healthy, so treat him as nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a decent No. 2 option.
News: After starting goalie Martin Biron allowed four Rangers goals on Saturday, the Flyers replaced him with Antero Niittymaki. Niittymaki was a perfect 13-for-13 on saves in over 43 minutes on the ice.
Analysis: Niittymaki was 12-9-1 with a 2.91 GAA and .907 save percentage in 28 games last season. He will spend most of his time as Biron's backup once healthy, so treat him as nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News: The Philadelphia Daily News reports that Flyers backup G Antero Niittymaki, who underwent hip surgery on Sept. 12, could return to practice on Tuesday. "He's been skating and working out on his own and he may join us for a little bit of practice," coach John Stevens said Monday. "We'll see how he feels but he may come out and take some shots in the beginning."
News: The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Flyers backup G Antero Niittymaki will miss 4-6 weeks following hip surgery on Sept. 12. He will miss training camp and the Flyers signed Jean-Sebastien Aubin to serve as Martin Biron's backup to open the season.
Analysis: Niittymaki, 28, had surgery in Nashville to clean out inflamed tissue in the hip, trainer Jim McCrossin said. Niittymaki had been feeling pain since July. "It kind of got worse and worse," said Niittymaki, who has had problems with both hips in his career. Niittymaki was 12-9-1 with a 2.91 GAA and .907 save percentage in 28 games last season. He will spend most of his time as Biron's backup once healthy, so treat him as nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News:Antero Niittymaki stopped Frans Nielsen, Kyle Okposo and Richard Park in the shootout and the Philadelphia Flyers rallied twice in the third period to escaped with a 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday night.
Analysis: Niittymaki has pretty much settled in as a backup to Martin Biron and is nothing more than a flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News:Antero Niittymaki allowed a goal 58 seconds into the game, but was near flawless in helping the Flyers to their 10th straight series win against the Thrashers 3-2 on Tuesday. The Flyers haven't lost to Atlanta since November 2005 and Niittymaki improved to 9-0 against the Thrashers.

Analysis: Niittymaki has now made both of his last two appearances in relief and has been awful in March. He was a ray of hope in early January, but has now settled back into his backup ways. He is nothing more than a flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki was pulled early in the second period Sunday against the Rangers and Martin Biron was shouldered with the overtime decision after allowing two goals in a shootout. The Rangers won the game 5-4. Niittymaki allowed four goals on 14 shots. "There weren't any bad goals ... but if you want to win in this league you have to be able to make a couple of big saves," Niittymaki said. "I just wasn't able to do that." Biron did as he stopped all 21 shots he saw in 43:09 of ice time.
Analysis: Niittymaki is now winless in his last five appearances (0-3-1) and has allowed four goals in three of those outings. He sure doesn't look like the goalie whoe was outstanding through the first few weeks of January. Niittymaki remains just a flier in Fantasy leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Tough night for Antero Niittymaki, who looked like he was going to get a shutout win before it all turned around in the late stages of a 2-1 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers. Jay Bouwmeester tied the game with 3.7 seconds left in regulation and Olli Jokinen scored the winner with 76 second to play in overtime. The Flyers matched a franchise record with 10 straight losses.
Analysis: Niittymaki remains a low-end Fantasy flier and the Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option. The Flyers dropped to 0-8-2 in their last 10 games, matching a franchise-worst 10-game winless mark they suffered last season when they were the worst team in the NHL.

News:Andrei Kostitsyn stunned Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki and the entire Bell Centre crowd and all the players on both teams when he scored his 18th goal after sweeping the puck towards the net with his stick while he was flat on the ice and seemingly out of scoring range. Niittymaki, who made 19 saves overall, stopped Kostitsyn's initial shot as the Canadiens left wing drove across the goalmouth. The Philadelphia goalie ran into trouble when Kostitsyn surprisingly managed to fling the rebound towards the net. The puck struck Niittymaki's blocker and bounced back towards his pad, which deflected it behind Niittymaki once again and over the goal line.
Analysis: It was the only goal of the game and Philadelphia lost its sixth in a row, matching its longest losing streak of the season. As a backup for the Flyers, Niittymaki remains a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option
News:Antero Niittymaki could not convert his first start in a week into a win for the Philadelphia Flyers. Niittymaki allowed four goals on 47 shots after the New York Islanders bombarded him from every position on the ice for a 4-3 win.

News: Antero Nittymaki and the Philadelphia Flyers own the Thrashers, especially in Atlanta. Nittymaki stopped 23 shots to stay perfect in eight decisions against Atlanta and Steve Downie scored with 4:29 left in the third period to give the Flyers a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night. Nittymaki has allowed only 13 goals while going 8-0 against the Thrashers. He earned the start even though Martin Biron had a five-game winning streak, including a shutout of Anaheim in his last start on Saturday night.
Analysis: Niittymaki entered the game as loser in his previous two starts and having allowed nine goals along the way. He started Tuesday because he had a solid track record against Atlanta. But after a solid January run, it appears as though Biron is the flavor of the month in Philly. Niittymaki remains a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki was chased after 22 minutes and four goals allowed on 12 shots, taking a 4-0 loss against the New York Rangers on Thursday. Niittymaki was 6-1-1 in his last eight games and a brief goalie controversy brewed in Philly. Martin Biron played the rest of the way and stopped all 15 shots.
Analysis: It seems Philadelphia continues to lean on Niittymaki as long as he is hot. But Biron is always ready to step in. Consider Niittymaki a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy goalie while he is seeing the majority of starts over Martin Biron. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Flyers goaltender Antero Niittymaki was pulled for Martin Biron after the Devils made it 5-2 with 5:27 left in the second period. Niittymaki, who was 6-0-1 in his last seven starts, allowed five goals on 20 shots.
Analysis: Philadelphia will continue to lean on Niittymaki as long as he is hot. This might've just a bad outing. Consider Niittymaki a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy goalie while he is seeing the majority of starts over Martin Biron. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.

His only loss during that span came against Boston, 4-3 in overtime on Jan. 12. He has allowed two or fewer goals in five of those contests.
Analysis: Niittymaki has stolen the hearts of Flyers fans and head coach John Stevens with his recent play. Philadelphia will continue to lean on Niittymaki as long as he is hot. Consider him a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy goalie while he is seeing the majority of starts over Martin Biron. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Philadelphia backup Antero Niittymaki, who hasn't lost in regulation in his last six starts (5-0-1), made 28 saves Wednesday to beat the Florida Panthers 5-3. His only loss during that span came against Boston, 4-3, in overtime last Saturday.
Analysis: Flyers coach John Stevens said Martin Biron was going to start in net this game, but he went back to the more consistent Niittymaki again. His recent quality performances have started a bit of a goalie controversy in Philadelphia. Niittymaki remains a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Flyers goaltender Antero Niittymaki ranged far out of the crease to swipe away a loose puck and prevent a breakaway. But the puck went to Aaron Ward near the right boards, who easily beat Niittymaki with a slap shot. It cost Niittymaki a four-game win streak and the Flyers the 4-3 loss to the Bruins in overtime. Niittymaki made 28 saves. He has allowed five goals in four games since Dec. 30, including a team-record 54 saves in a 3-2 win at Toronto last Saturday.
Analysis: Niittymaki's recent performance fueled talk of a goalie controversy. Flyers coach John Stevens already said Martin Biron would start at Washington on Sunday. Niittymaki remains a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:Antero Niittymaki won his fourth straight start for the Philadelphia Flyers, who rallied for a solid 6-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday. Niittymaki stopped 39 shots.
Analysis: Playing so well, Niittymaki might be starting a goalie controversy in Philly with No. 1 netminder Martin Biron. Niittymaki has stopped 120 of 125 in the last three games, but for now remains a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki stopped 27 shots to win the battle of backup goalies during Tuesday's 4-1 victory against the Thrashers. Atlanta's Johan Hedberg started his second straight home game ahead of Kari Lehtonen after making a season-high 37 saves in a 5-2 win over Buffalo on Sunday. Hedberg made 25 stops but couldn't overcome the Flyers' second-period scoring outburst in which Philadelphia scored all their goals. Niittymaki started ahead of Flyers regular Martin Biron, who shut out Atlanta 4-0 on Oct. 16 at Philadelphia. Niittymaki stopped 54 of 56 shots in a 3-2 win at Toronto on Saturday, but his 6-0-0 career record and 1.68 goals against average against Atlanta may have played the larger role in his start.
Analysis: Niittymaki has now won his last three starts while making 119 and allowing just three goals. Pretty good ratio. The Flyers would be foolish not to keep using Niittymaki as long as he has the hot hand, but Biron will eventually emerge as the top goalie once again. Niittymaki is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:Antero Niittymaki made 54 saves to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. Niittymaki has now won his last two starts while allowing just two goals and making 92 saves.
Analysis: Niittymaki had to make a million saves against Toronto and the Philly defense has been pretty bad as of late. Niittymaki has looked good in his last two outings, but Martin Biron is still the top goalie in Philly. He is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News: The Flyers' Derian Hatcher scored a rare goal at a most opportune time. The defensman's second goal this season, along with 38 stops by goalie Antero Niittymaki, helped Philadelphia beat the Florida Panthers 1-0 on Sunday. Niittymaki's leg save stopped Radek Dvorak's back-hander on a penalty shot at 18:52 of the first period, one of 14 he made in the period. Niittymaki withstood another Panthers flurry in the game's final seconds. "If you shoot at his pads and glove every time, you definitely make him look good," Florida's Olli Jokinen said.
Analysis: Jokinen is absolutely right. Despite the shutout, Niittymaki is not as good as goalie as it would seem. He had his moments in 2005-06 and in the Olympics, but has been a pretty poor goalie since then. He remains the backup to Martin Biron and is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki stopped 34 shots during a 4-2 loss Sunday against the Devils. He allowed three goals and the Devils picked up an empty-netter with five seconds left. It was his second consecutive loss. He has allowed seven goals in that span.
Analysis: Niittymaki has been relegated to a backup role this season with the Flyers after seeing most of the starts last season. Martin Biron is the top guy in net for Philadelphia and Niittymaki is no better than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or someone to use in leagues that have average points per game. The Flyers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki made 19 saves during a 4-1 loss to the Canadiens Thursday. It was the first time in seven appearances he has allowed more than three goals. He has lost two of his last three outings.
News:Steve Downie's long-awaited NHL debut was upstaged by a very strong performance by backup goaltender Antero Niittymaki as the Flyers climbed back into a tie for the Atlantic Division lead with the New York Rangers. Niittymaki had some help. Defensemen Jason Smith and Derian Hatcher and forwards Sami Kapanen, Mike Knuble and R.J. Umberger helped kill off seven of eight Minnesota power plays, including a pair of 5-on-3s.
Analysis: Niittymaki, who was the Flyers' No. 1 goalie last season until Martin Biron was acquired last March, stopped 27 of 28 shots to earn his third win of the season and first since Nov. 24 when he beat the Ottawa Senators. "Nitty was dialed in all game," Flyers coach John Stevens said. "He was just terrific." Consider picking up Niittymaki as insurance for Biron.
News:Martin Biron was replaced by Antero Niittymaki 1:59 later after allowing three goals on 14 shots Monday against Boston. Niittymaki allowed two goals on 17 shots in the loss.
Analysis: Biron has run into trouble in November after reeling off seven wins in October. Perhaps his good start was too good to be true. Biron remains a decent Fantasy option at this time, just be aware that he is in a slump right now. If you own him, consider picking up Niittymaki as insurance. The Flyers TG is also worth using in most Fantasy formats.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki stopped 29 shots in a rare start during Saturday's 4-3 win over the Senators. It was his second win in five appearances this season.
Analysis: Niittymaki continues to backup Martin Biron, who has been outstanding this season for the Flyers. Niittymaki is nothing more than a risky No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game in a scoring period. The Flyers TG is a high-end Fantasy option.
News:Martin Biron stopped 32 shots in a win at Carolina Wednesday, but he allowed the NHL's second-best power-play unit to connect three times. The Flyers entered having allowed one power-play goal in six games.
Analysis: The Flyers are set to play against Washington Friday. In Philadelphia's only other game against the Caps this season, Flyers backup Antero Niittymaki stopped 24 shots and played his best game of the season in a 2-1 win. Niittymaki is expected to get his third start of the season on Friday, allowing a well-rested Marty Biron to face the conference-leading Ottawa Senators on Saturday. The Flyers are off to a great start and that has a lot to do with the play of Biron. He sees most of the starts in net and has emerged as a No. 1 Fantasy goalie. The Flyers TG is also a No. 1 Fantasy option at this time.
News: Flyers G Martin Biron was pulled after two periods during Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Devils and replaced by Antero Niittymaki in the third period. Biron allowed four goals on 18 shots and Niittymaki allowed two goals on the only two shots he faced.
Analysis: Niittymaki showed Saturday why he doesn't get many starts, he is not exactly the most reliable guy in net. Also, Biron has been pretty outstanding to open the season. Niittymaki is nothing more than a risky No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game in a scoring period.
News: Rod Pelley's goal early in the second period sent Flyers goaltender Martin Biron to the bench during Thursday's 4-1 loss. The last time the teams met on Oct. 18, Biron shut out the Devils 4-0. He didn't have the same luck Thursday. He allowed four goals on 15 shots and was yanked in favor of Antero Niittymaki, who stopped all 24 shots he saw.
Analysis: Don't be surprised if Niittymaki earns a start after Thursday's performance, but he still remains the backup goalie to Biron. He is nothing more than a risky No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game in a scoring period.
News: It will be interesting to see if Antero Niittymaki goes back between the pipes against the Devils Thursday night. Niittymaki was solid in Washington last week, where he picked up his first win of the season.
Analysis: The Flyers have found a No. 1 goalie in Martin Biron, and as long as he remains hot, Niittymaki will have few chances to start. He is nothing more than a risky No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game in a scoring period. The Flyers TG can be considered a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 Fantasy option at this time.
News: Antero Niittymaki made 24 saves in his second start of the season for Philadelphia during Friday's 3-2 win over the Capitals. He had much better results against the Flyers than he did in his first start against the Lightning, when he allowed four goals and took the loss.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki made his first start of the season Thursday against the Lightning and took the loss after allowing five goals. He made 21 saves.
Analysis: Niittymaki hasn't hade many chances to start this season as Martin Biron has played extremely well. If Niittymaki continues to post performances like Thursday, he won't see many more starts come his way. He is nothing more than a risky No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game in a scoring period. The Flyers TG can be considered a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 Fantasy option at this time.
News: The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Antero Niittymaki will start Thursday's game at Tampa Bay in the back-to-back situation, giving Martin Biron a chance to rest.
Analysis: Set your daily Fantasy lineups accordingly. Niittymaki is only worth a look in the deepest of weekly leagues and as a No. 3 in formats which average points per game in a scoring period.
News: Coach John Stevens said that as long as Martin Biron is healthy, he'll start him until further notice. That may not be good news for backup Antero Niittymaki, who may not see his first game action until Oct. 24 or Oct. 25, when the Flyers play back-to-back games against the Panthers and Lightning.
Analysis: Niittymaki might get a start in the second game of the next back-to-back series for Philadelphia, which won't happen until Oct. 24 (at Florida) and 25 (at Tampa Bay). He had a horrible preseason and obviously, the Flyers are leery of starting him right now. Consider him as a reserve goalie in Fantasy play.
News: Antero Niittymaki has yet to play in a game for the Flyers this season. They continue to go with Martin Biron in goal and he hasn't disappointed. Biron is 3-1 with a 2.26 GAA so far.
News: Antero Niittymaki has been awful in the preseason so far, allowing five goals in just three periods of hockey. "It's too soon to be concerned," coach Paul Holmgren told the Philadelphia Daily News. "I think [Niittymaki] knows more than anybody else that he needs to play better. [Brian Boucher] was coming in here needing to find his game again or re-establish his game again and I think he's on the right track right now. I think he has played very well and [Niittymaki] it is safe to say could play better."
Analysis: Niittymaki was expected to challenge Martin Biron for the starting role, but right now he is simply holding off a challenge from Brian Boucher for the backup job. Avoid Niittymaki in all but the deepest of Fantasy leagues which average points per game in a scoring period or as a reserve for owners of Biron.
News: The Philadelphia Flyers re-signed Antero Niittymaki to two-year contract last week, as the former starter will now serve as the backup to Martin Biron.
Analysis: Niittymaki will be a decent late-round pick on Draft Day, especially as insurance for Fantasy owners of Biron. He is still recovering from hip surgery back in mid-April and is expected to be sidelined another week or two before resuming workouts.
News: Antero Niittymaki had surgery on his left hip on Friday and he is expected to be sidelined at least 10 weeks. It is his second surgery in the past two years.
Analysis: The reserve goaltender is a restricted free agent and the Flyers are expected to make a qualifying offer to bring him back as the backup to Martin Biron for 2007-08. He is expected to be ready for training camp in September, barring any setbacks.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki has started two games since the arrival of Martin Biron and has lost both, allowing eight goals, including a 5-0 loss to the Rangers Wednesday.
Analysis: The team has already said they expect Biron back in net next time out, so Niittymaki is headed back to the pine. There is very little reason to start Niittymaki except in the largest of Fantasy leagues which average points per game in a scoring period.
News: Antero Niittymaki told the Delaware County Times that his torn left hip labrum has not been giving him trouble. However, he added that if the team decided to shut him down for an early surgery, he would be open to it.
Analysis: Niittymaki is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. With the possibility of being shut down and the presence of Martin Biron and Robert Esche, there is very little reason to start Niittymaki except in the largest of Fantasy leagues which average points per game in a scoring period.
News: Antero Niittymaki allowed six goals on 39 shots in Tuesday's game at N.Y. Islanders to take yet another loss.
Analysis: This game, coupled with the fact that newly-acquired Martin Biron is supposed to be in uniform on Thursday, doesn't bode well for Niittymaki's Fantasy appeal.
News: Niittymaki made 27 saves in Thursday's game at Carolina for the Flyers, who had scored at least four goals in each of their past four trips to Raleigh -- including a 5-2 victory on Dec. 31.
Analysis: Niittymaki continues to struggle, as do the Flyers. He remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy goaltender or solid No. 3 at this point.
News: Robert Esche allowed four goals on 14 shots before being pulled in Tuesday's game at Buffalo. Antero Niittymaki replaced him and stopped six of eight shots in the loss.
Analysis: Esche was making his first appearance since Feb. 3 against Atlanta. Niittymaki is likely to get the start on Thursday at Carolina.
News: Antero Niittymaki allowed five goals on just 17 shots in Monday's game against the Bruins in a 6-3 loss.
Analysis: Niittymaki and the Flyers had been playing a little bit better, but he remains useful only as a No. 3 Fantasy goaltender at this time.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki made 40 saves in a 5-3 win over the Rangers Saturday.
Analysis: Niittymaki now has three wins in his last seven starts, but is still far from being used heavily in Fantasy leagues. He remains a low-end option.
News: The Maple Leafs scored three goals in the first period of Thursday's game and chased Philadelphia goaltender Michael Leighton, who had won his previous two starts. Antero Niittymaki took over and allowed one goal on 20 shots in relief.
Analysis: Niittymaki looked pretty sharp in relief on Thursday and he is expected to get the nod in Saturday's afternoon game at N.Y. Rangers.
News: Antero Niittymaki allowed just two goals on 37 shots in Wednesday's game at N.Y. Islanders, but he was bested by Rick DiPietro who earned the shutout.
Analysis: Niittymaki has managed to go 2-1-2 with a 2.62 GAA over the past five games, but he is still only worth using as a No. 3 Fantasy goaltender right now.
News: Antero Nittymaki stopped 32 shots, allowing only one goal, to move to 6-0 against Atlanta with his second win over the Thrashers in a week on Saturday.
Analysis: After ending a 13-game losing streak, Niittymaki has gone 2-0-2 in his last four starts. This is as good as it might get for the Flyers goalie, but he is not worth using much more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie at this time.
News: Antero Niittymaki allowed one goal on 38 shots in Sunday's game at Atlanta to pick up a rare win. It was also Philadelphia goalie Niittymaki's first win since a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Nov. 30, snapping a personal 15-game skid.
Analysis: Niittymaki is still only worth a look in Fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams as a No. 3 goaltender until this type of performance can become a regularity.
News: Flyers G Antero Niittymaki dropped to 0-13-2 in his last 15 starts with a 4-3 shootout loss to the Devils on Saturday.
Analysis: It just keeps getting worse for Niittymaki. He is about the worst Fantasy option at this moment and should be kept reserved until he breaks out of his horrible slump.
News: On Thursday, against the Islanders, Philadelphia's Antero Niittymaki stopped 32 shots but suffered his 14th straight defeat (0-13-1).
Analysis: Niittymaki is 0-13-1 in his last 14 starts. He is about as bad as it can get in Fantasy leagues right now.

News: Antero Niittymaki, who has dropped his last 12 decisions (0-11-1), stopped 22 shots in Thursday's game against the Canadiens.
Analysis: Niittymaki looked a little better on Thursday night, but he should be kept reserved in all Fantasy leagues until he can get back on track and start winning again.
News: Antero Niittymaki (hip) made 37 saves for Philadelphia in his 11th straight loss on Sunday at Ottawa. "Terrible," was how Flyers coach John Stevens described the outing. "We put up a fight for 10 minutes, then there was no fight after that."
Analysis: Niittymaki is only worth using as a No. 3 Fantasy option in the largest of leagues right now, as Robert Esche has been playing most of the games for the Flyers lately.
News: G Antero Niittymaki dressed and served as Robert Esche's backup in Thursday's game at N.Y. Rangers and did so again on Saturday against the Flyers.
Analysis: Niittymaki might make a start in Sunday's game at Ottawa, but he is not a recommended Fantasy starter until he can officially play and prove his health.
News: G Antero Niittymaki dressed and served as Esche's backup in Thursday's game at N.Y. Rangers. He sat out the past three games due to his hip injury.
Analysis: Niittymaki might make a start in Saturday's game at Boston, but he is not a recommended Fantasy starter until he can officially play and prove his health.
News: Antero Niittymaki (hip) will have an MRI some time this week in Philadelphia, as head trainer Jim McCrosslin wants to compare results from a test done in September when he first suffered a tear in the area.
Analysis: Niittymaki is considered day to day for now, but it sounds like he'll be out longer than that unofficially. Scott Munroe is serving as the backup to Robert Esche.
News: According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Flyers G Antero Niittymaki has returned from a trip to Nashville where he received the second of a series of three cortisone injections to relieve pain from a left hip labrum tear suffered in training camp. Niittymaki had hoped he wouldn't need a second shot after an injection at the beginning of the season left him pain-free. He stayed that way until the week before Christmas when the pain came back. Niittymaki had to be pulled from Wednesday's game because the pain became unbearable. The team felt he needed a second shot in order to keep playing. "He had his injection today, and he said his hip is feeling good, and he is going to practice (Saturday)," trainer Jim McCrossin said Friday.
Analysis: The Flyers will practice in Raleigh today and play the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday before returning to Philadelphia for a brief break. Niittymaki is expected to practice and could be available for Sunday or Tuesday night against the Islanders on Long Island. Robert Esche will be starting in net for the Flyers while Niittymaki rests. Keep Niittymaki out of Fantasy lineups until he proves he is back at 100 percent.
News: Robert Esche, who was relegated to backup duties before he required surgery on the adductor muscle in his groin area, will carry the load for the Flyers while Antero Niittymaki is treated for irritation of his hip. Niittymaki will join the team on its trip to Raleigh, N.C., and then drive to Nashville for a checkup and a possible cortisone shot. Niittymaki received his first cortisone shot in September and is expected to need at least one more to get him through the regular season before undergoing off-season surgery. Esche made 42 saves, helping Philadelphia stop a franchise-record, 10-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night.
Analysis: Esche could be used as a possible stopgap Fantasy option while Niittymaki is out with injury. It is likely though Niittymaki will regain his starting job once he comes back from injury. Just be patient and put him on your bench in the meantime.
News: Antero Niittymaki (hip) did not start Thursday's game at Tampa Bay, as Robert Esche was in the crease against the Lightning.
Analysis: Niittymaki remains day to day. Keep him reserved for Fantasy Week 14 (Jan. 1-7) if he is unable to suit up on Sunday at Carolina.
News: Antero Niittymaki, making his 16th consecutive start for Philadelphia in Wednesday's game at Florida, stopped 22 shots before being replaced by Robert Esche after two periods. Nittymaki left the game because of what general manager Paul Holmgren described as a slight hip strain. "I felt a little sore the whole game, more and more every time I went down," Nittymaki said. "I felt it was better to be safe than sorry."
Analysis: Niittymaki is considered day to day. With Robert Esche (groin) back in the lineup, it is likely he will get the start on Thursday at Tampa Bay. Set your daily lineups accordingly.

News: It was not a good night to be a Flyers goalie on Wednesday. Starter Antero Niittymaki allowed seven goals and backup Martin Houle allowed one goal in an 8-4 loss to the Penguins. Houle made his NHL debut in the second period, stopping two of three shots before Niittymaki returned to the game. Niittymaki made 19 saves.
Analysis: After getting his sixth win of the season on Nov. 30, Niittymaki has failed to win in his last five starts. Probably Wednesday's outing will get Houle a start here and there. Consider any Philly goalie a poor Fantasy option at this time.

News: The Capitals chased Flyers goaltender Robert Esche on Saturday by scoring four times on eight shots in the opening period. Antero Niittymaki allowed one goal on 11 shots in relief. The Flyers lost 5-3.
Analysis: Esche was fresh off his first win and shutout on Monday against the Blackhawks and that is a big reason he got the start on Saturday. However, Niittymaki is still expected to get the majority of starts for the Flyers. The Flyers TG is still not a strong start right now. The team is just 3-9-1 on the season.

News: Antero Niittymaki has been in goal in the Flyers' last four games, posting a 2.73 GAA. Hitchcock, however, said that he is leaning toward using Robert Esche, who stopped 17 shots in Philadelphia's season-opening 4-0 loss at Pittsburgh, against the Sabres.

News: Starting his third straight game and second in two nights, Antero Niittymaki had 20 saves for the Flyers in a 3-1 loss to the Canadiens. Even with a torn labrum in his left hip, Niittymaki seems to have edged out Robert Esche as Philadelphia's No. 1 goalie. Niittymaki decided to have a cortisone shot instead of surgery to repair the tear, and it appears it was the smart move, even though he has only one win, so far. Niittymaki said his hip has not been a problem since his shot. "I feel something once in a while, but nothing major," he said. "It doesn't bother me at all."

Analysis: Niittymaki saw first action since tearing the labrum in his left hip on Sept. 26. He received a cortisone shot on Sept. 29 and pronounced himself good to play after two full practices on Tuesday and Wednesday. He's worth starting as a No. 2 Fantasy goaltender.
News: Goaltender Robert Esche was outplayed by Marc-Andre Fleury in the defeat and that will open the door for Flyers net-minder Antero Niittymaki in Saturday's showdown against the Rangers.
Analysis: Niittymaki will be seeing his first action since tearing the labrum in his left hip on Sept. 26. He received a cortisone shot on Sept. 29 and pronounced himself good to play after two full practices on Tuesday and Wednesday. He's worth starting as a No. 2 Fantasy goaltender.
News: Antero Niittymaki (hip) did not play in Thursday's regular season opener at Pittsburgh, but he was able to dress as the backup which is a good sign.
Analysis: Robert Esche allowed four goals on just 21 shots against the Penguins, so Niittymaki might play sooner rather than later once it is determined he is 100 percent and will not suffer further damage to his injury.
News: Goaltender Antero Niittymaki will try to build off a promising season in which he matched a team rookie record with 23 victories. But Niittymaki will be receiving cortisone shots and undergoing constant rehabilitation to relieve pain in his injured hip in a bid to avoid surgery.
Analysis: Niittymaki is expected to start the season opener at Pittsburgh Thursday. His injury makes him a relatively risky Fantasy start, however.
News: The Philadelphia Daily News reports that Antero Nittymaki will avoid surgery for now on the torn labrum in his left hip by getting cortisone shots. "I knew it was going to be 3 months if I had to do the surgery and I'm pretty happy now that we have another choice," Niittymaki said.
Analysis: Nittymaki was injured in practice on Tuesday. This injury is not believed to be as severe as the medical staff initially believed. The Finnish goalie will receive three shots this season and they'll deal with the inflammation and pain as it comes, and keep him on a strength and conditioning program. "I'm not going to do anything different and I don't see why," Niittymaki said. "The doctor said it was not going to get worse and there can't be any more damage if I keep playing." After the first shot, he will return to Philadelphia and resume skating. Robert Esche would be the goalie to receive more starts if Niitymaki doesn't come back 100 percent.
News: According to published reports, Antero Niittymaki suffered a torn labrum in his left hip and might be sidelined anywhere from six to eight weeks. "Antero Niittymaki tore the labrum in his left hip (Tuesday) at the morning skate," said Flyers GM Bobby Clarke. "The MRI shows that there is a tear and the MRI will be sent overnight to Dr. Thomas Byrd in Nashville, Tennessee. We won't know if surgery is necessary until (Wednesday) afternoon. If surgery is necessary, it will be six to eight weeks before he is back playing."
Analysis: Niittymaki is expected to be sidelined until at least mid-November, so Robert Esche will be the full-time starter in Philadelphia for at least the first month of the season. Niittymaki is still a solid selection in keeper Fantasy leagues, but his value decreases significantly in seasonal leagues. Only draft him as insurance in the later rounds if you grab Esche as one of your Fantasy netminders.
News: Head coach Ken Hitchcock told the Philadelphia Daily News that he will go with both Robert Esche and Antero Niittymaki in between the pipes for the Flyers until one emerges as the clear-cut No. 1 goaltender. "That's the only way it is going to work this year," Hitchcock said.
Analysis: Right now, Esche and Niittymaki have decreased Fantasy appeal heading into Draft Day because of their uncertainty. If we had to look into our Fantasy crystal ball, we would say Niittymaki has more upside and is the higher-rated goaltender on Draft Day right now. Look for a similar split to what is happening in Detroit, where the starter gets 60 percent of the starts and the backup sees 40 percent of the action.
News: According to the Delaware County Daily Times, Antero Niittymaki might have the early inside track for the No. 1 goaltender job in Philadelphia for the 2006-07 season. "Esche is at a level where he’s a good goalie in this league right now," he said. "But, we’re at a point where we have to allow Niittymaki to grow. We need to get him more starts and more quality starts, because he has a great disposition to be an elite goalie."
Analysis: Hitchcock sounds as if he would like to see more from the Finnish goaltender. We will review the situation during training camp and into the preseason, but if you have Niittymaki in keeper leagues, this news is certainly good for you.
News: Robert Esche has been named the starting goaltender for the Flyers in the playoffs over Antero Niittymaki. "We have two really good goaltenders," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We wanted to see how Robert's season unfolded once he got healthy. There were a lot of ebbs and flows since January. Our feeling was we wanted to start with the experienced player and go from there."
Analysis: Esche started the final seven of nine regular season games and the Flyers appear to be a lot more comfortable with experience over youth. At the first sign of trouble, Niittymaki will likely be summoned, but drop the Finn down on your cheat sheets for Fantasy playoff leagues.
News: Coach Ken Hitchcock will roll out Robert Esche for the start on Thursday at New Jersey, his fifth start in the past six games over apparent backup Antero Niittymaki.

"We consulted everyone we could consult and [Esche], and so we want to reward him for real good play."
