Filewich signs with Austrian club

News: Free agent RW Jonathan Filewich signed a contract with Red Bull Salzburg in Austria Thursday. The Blues had picked up the career minor leaguer from Pittsburgh in December for a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2010.
Analysis: Filewich only played five games with the Pens in 2007-08 after being the team's third-round pick in 2003. He had a so-so minor league career, and when it became apparent he wasn't going to have a long career in the NHL, he bolted for Europe. It's safe to ignore Filewich in Fantasy.

Filewich traded to St. Louis

News: The St. Louis Blues acquired Jonathan Filewich from Pittsburgh for a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2010. Filewich was drafted by Pittsburgh in the third round, 70th overall, in 2003. He will report to the Blues' AHL team in Peoria, Ill.
Analysis: The 24-year-old forward has two goals and two assists in 19 games this season with Pittsburgh's AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Last season, the winger played five games with the Penguins and had 10 goals and 21 assists in 71 AHL games. He is just added organizational depth for the Blues and has little to no Fantasy value at this time.

Penguins re-sign Taffe, Filewich

News: The Pittsburgh Penguins signed C Jeff Taffe to a one-year contract on Monday, giving him a chance to play a second season with the team. The 6-foot-3, 208-pound forward debuted with the Penguins in December. In 45 games, Taffe had five goals and seven assists. The native of Hastings, Minn., was originally chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the 2000 NHL draft. In 145 career games with the Penguins, the Phoenix Coyotes and the New York Rangers, Taffe has 20 goals and 20 assists. The Penguins also re-signed F Jonathan Filewich to a two-year contract on Monday. He played five games with the Penguins last season, but spent most of the season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he had 10 goals and 21 assists in 71 games.
Analysis: Both of these players should be ignored in all Fantasy formats, as they are unlikely to contribute much offensively.

Filewich, Nasreddine sent back to AHL

News: The Penguins sent RW Jonathan Filewich and D Alain Nasreddine back to Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Analysis: Neither of these players has any Fantasy value at this time.

Filewich added before break

News: Sidney Crosby was placed on injured reserve Monday, a move that allowed the Pittsburgh Penguins to add an extra forward for their final two games before the All-Star break. The Penguins recalled forwards Chris Minard, Tim Brent and Jonathan Filewich from their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) farm club. Forward Adam Hall (groin) also went on the injured list and defenseman Ryan Lannon was returned to Wilkes-Barre after not playing in any games during his two weeks with Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Filewich, a third-round draft pick in 2003, had seven goals and 10 assists at Wilkes-Barre, a falloff from his 56-point season there a year ago. Filewich is nothing more than roster filler at this point in his career and can be ignored until he starts producing.

Penguins bring three up, send one down

News: The Pittsburgh Penguins called up forwards Chris Minard, Tim Brent and Jonathan Filewich from Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, while D Ryan Lannon was sent back to the American Hockey League.
Analysis: These three players will be available for Monday night's game against the Capitals, but the Post-Gazette reports that whether they will play depends on the status of Colby Armstrong (hip), Adam Hall (groin) and Tyler Kennedy (illness). Therefore, leave all three guys alone for now.

Filewich goes back to minors

News: The Sports Xchange notes: The Penguins trimmed their roster to 22. They assigned top prospect Kris Letang, a heralded right-handed defenseman, to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL. Joining Letang there will be forwards Jonathan Filewich, Ryan Stone and Jeffrey Taffe.
Analysis: Letang had done very little to earn a spot, as he was disappointing in the team's prospect tournament and the preseason. He remains a solid keeper in long-term Fantasy leagues however. Taffe was limited to just six points in 17 games for the Phoenix Coyotes last season and has never really materialized as a Fantasy force like was originally envisioned. He is only worth a look in the deepest of formats if he actually wins a roster spot. None of the other players are worth holding onto in Fantasy play.

Pens reassign eight Monday

News: The Pittsburgh Penguins reassigned D Matt Carkner, F Erik Christensen, F Stephen Dixon, D Micki DuPont, F Jonathan Filewich, F Connor James, F Tyler Kennedy and D Alain Nasreddine to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL on Monday.
Analysis: Carkner and Christensen have the best chance of being recalled at some point, but none of the eight players mentioned are worthy of any Fantasy consideration.
