Stortini Joins Preds

News: The Predators have signed Stortini to a one-year, two-way contract, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: Stortini, who had four assists and 76 PIMs in 32 games with the Oilers this past season, is only of use to those in leagues that count PIMs. Overall, he has racked up 718 penalty minutes in 256 career games.

Stortini Not Given A Qualifying Offer By Edmonton

News: Stortini was not given a qualifying offer by the Oilers, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: The Oilers had let it be known prior to the draft that Stortini could be had for a draft pick, but when there were no takers, Stortini was set free. He'll be able to sign with any team when free agency starts July 1.

Oilers Likely To Dangle Stortini

News: Stortini is likely to be trade bait during the NHL entry draft later this month, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: Stortini's biggest value is his willingness to use his fists, but he went unclaimed when put on waivers in February, and it would seem unlikely that another team would give up a high pick to acquire his services.

Edmonton Places Stortini On Waivers

News: Stortini was placed on waivers Tuesday, TSN's Ryan Rishaug reports.
Analysis: Edmonton will likely send him to the AHL if he clears waivers. It's difficult to guess whether Stortini would interest a team as a potential waiver claim, but the fighter figures to remain a PIM machine as long as he's seeing the ice somewhere.

Oilers' Stortini Drops His Gloves Sunday

News: Stortini picked up a five-minute major penalty for fighting in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Stortini is only averaging 6:18 of ice time after eight games, but when he does play, he often looks to scrum.

Oilers send Stortini wake-up call

News: The Sports Xchange reports Oilers RW Zack Stortini was a healthy scratch for the first time this season on Thursday against the Blues. His physical play has fallen off and they Oilers hope this is a sufficient wake-up call.
Analysis: First-year Edmonton coach Pat Quinn has been a big fan of Stortini's because of his physical nature. But it seems his spirits have been down during a prolonged losing streak. Stortini should jump back into the lineup shortly. He remains more of a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Stortini gets a rare point

News: Oilers RW Zack Stortini tallied an assist and finished at plus-1 on Wednesday against the Canucks. He also spent two minutes in the penalty box. It was Stortini's first point since netting a goal and an assist on Dec. 9 against Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Stortini is not on the ice because he can light the lamp or being a creative passer. No, he is in the lineup for his checking and ability to throw haymakers. Stortini remains more of a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Stortini has Howe hat trick

News: Zack Stortini scored his third goal of the season and had two fights as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 on Wednesday. Stortini won a battle behind the net for the puck, moved toward the slot and scored to give Edmonton a 3-2 lead at 11:07 of the second period. He fought Zenon Konopka late in the first and again during the second. He also had an assist and finished at plus-2.
Analysis: Stortini pulled off the Gordie Howe hat trick on Wednesday and did it in style. He is up to nine fights and 77 penalty minutes in 31 games. He is playing on a regular basis for the first time in his career as Pat Quinn wants toughness on the ice. Stortini remains more of a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Stortini fights for a sixth time

News: Oilers RW Zack Stortini didn't record a point in 5:16 of ice time Wednesday against the Avalanche, but he racked up 17 minutes worth of penalties. Stortini got a five-minute major for fighting with Ryan Wilson in the second. He also was hit with an instigator penalty and game misconduct. Stortini is up to 58 penalty minutes.
Analysis: Stortini has gotten into six fights this season and received his first game misconduct on Wednesday. He will have the occasional goal, but Stortini is on the ice for his enforcer skills. Stortini remains more of a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Storini scores twice, wins fight

News: Oilers RW Zack Stortini scored a pair of goals and edged a fight with Nashville's Triston Grant in a 6-1 in on Monday.
Analysis: Stortini had just six goals all of last season and his Fantasy value is based on his ability to pick up penalty minutes. Don't expect another outing like this again and continue to use him in just deeper leagues that reward bad behavior.

Stortini has five goals since Feb. 1

News: Oilers RW Zack Stortini scored a goal Tuesday against the Ducks. Stortini scored when Dwayne Roloson was off for an extra attacke to cut the lead to 4-3 at 17:49 of the third. It was his sixth goal and first since Feb. 28.
Analysis: Stortini has managed five of his six goals in his last 20 games. He played just seven times in March as coach Craig MacTavish opted to leave the enforcer in the press box. Stortini has shown some offensive gusto as of late, but still remains more of a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Zack Stortini

Stortini trying to leave press box

News: The Sports Xchange reports Oilers LW Zack Stortini, a valuable energy player who's been a healthy scratch the last six games, could draw back in if Liam Reddox isn't fully recovered from his concussion. Steve MacIntyre played in place of Reddox Sunday at Minnesota, but that was only to counter Wild enforcer Derek Boogaard.
Analysis: As much as Edmonton loves Stortini's energy, right now they just can't afford a lot of silly penalties in the playoff hunt. Until Stortini draws on a more regular basis, perhaps he is a risky start in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Stortini suddenly scoring

News: Oilers RW Zack Stortini, who had just one goal in his first 31 games this season, tallied his third in the last six contests Tuesday in a loss to the Sharks.
Analysis: Stortini is fourth in the league with 140 PIM, but if he can keep scoring like this, he will be know for more than just his physical play. He remains a nice low-end option in deeper Fantasy leagues that reward PIM.

Stortini has a two-point night

News: Edmonton enforcer Zack Stortini didn't drop the gloves in Saturday's game against Detroit but did have a goal and an assist in a 8-3 loss. It was just Stortini's fourth and fifth points of the season.
Analysis: Stortini only sprained his knee in January after what looked like a much worse fate. He dodged a bullet and made it back into the lineup after a few weeks of rest. Stortini is a top enforcer for Edmonton and primarily has Fantasy value in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Stortini back from knee injury

News: Bruising forward Zack Stortini returned to the Edmonton lineup Tuesday against the Sabres after missing six games with a knee injury. Stortini did little to inspire Edmonton in a 10-2 loss, recording no points in 8:40 of ice time. He finished at minus-2 and didn't even get into a fight.
Analysis: Stortini only sprained his knee earlier in January after what looked like a much worse fate. He dodged a bullet and made it back into the lineup after a few weeks of rest. Stortini is a top enforcer for Edmonton and primarily has Fantasy value in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Stortini escapes major knee damage

News: The Sports Xchange reports the highlight looked like Joe Theismann II, when Zack Stortini's leg buckled and folded sideways at the knee during a fight on Friday against the Sharks. Fans in the building couldn't even bring themselves to look at the replay. It looked like he was done for the season. Well, two days later he's walking around the Oilers' dressing room like nothing happened. "I've been called medical miracle, or Gumby, or Rubberman, there's a lot of joking around about now that we know that it isn't very serious," said Stortini, who has no explanation for why there was no structural damage, just a slight knee strain. "I'm pretty fortunate. The medical staff was very clear that it could have been a lot worse than it was. I'm very fortunate."
Analysis: The Oilers have no return date for Stortini, but since he is not in the lineup for up-ice rushes, he could return a bit faster than expected since he is mostly a stationary player. Stortini is nothing more than a Fantasy flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Stortini placed on IR

News: The Oilers have placed RW Zack Stortini on injured reserve with a sprained knee. Stortini's knee bent awkwardly during a fight on Friday, but he somehow sustained no tears or broken bones.
Analysis: Stortini had totaled 13 major penalties through 28 games and was closing in on his career-high of 23 majors he set last season. Usually one of the Oilers' top enforcers, Stortini can be dropped in most formats.

Stortini could be out for a while

News: Oilers RW Zack Stortini fell awkwardly during a fight in Friday's loss to the Oilers and may have a severe knee injury or even a broken leg.
Analysis: Stortini had totaled 13 major penalties through 28 games and was closing in on his career-high of 23 majors he set last season. Usually one of the Oilers' top enforcers, Stortini could well be out for a while with this injury and you should prepare to drop himn in all formats.

Stortini records 13th major penalty

News: Oilers RW Zack Stortini didn't record a point and finished at minus-2 in 9:13 of ice time Friday against the Sharks. He did spend five minutes in the penalty box for fighting with Brad Staubitz in the third period.
Analysis: Stortini has totaled 13 major penalties through 28 games and is closing in on his career-high of 23 majors he set last season. Stortini remains one of the Oilers' top enforcers and pretty much just a flier in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Stortini scores first goal of season

News: Oilers RW Zack Stortini scored his first goal of the season in Monday's win over the Coyotes.
Analysis: Stortini is more of an enforcer than anything, who rarely contributes offensively. Continue to ignore him all but the deepest of leagues that reward PIM.

12/14/2008

Stortini working for regular PT

News: The Sports Xchange reports Oilers forward Zack Stortini, who played 66 games last year, knew that nothing would be handed to him this season. And it hasn't been. He has played 16 games and been a healthy scratch for 12 as he has tried to re-establish his presence. "I'm here every day working as hard as I can to earn my spot," the 23-year-old said. "I never take anything for granted. It's a battle every day to keep your job here. It's a tough league to play in. I've been very fortunate with the opportunity I got so far. It's important to prove yourself every day. It's an ongoing battle."
Analysis: Stortini has earned the label of an enforcer and sometimes teams won't dress their tough guys in hopes of using an offensive gameplan on a given night. Until Stortini becomes a well-rounded player, he is going to find it difficult staying active in the Oilers' lineup. He remains just a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.
