Brookbank Released by Blackhawks

News: Wade Brookbank was released by the Blackhawks on Tuesday as part of the team's first cuts, the ESPN Chicago reports.
Analysis: Wade Brookbank could return and play for Rockford of the AHL, but he will turn 36 on Sept. 29 so it is possible that the Blackhawks will use younger players at their AHL team. Brookbank skated in only 28 games for Rockford and last season and registered an assist. He did though register 100 penalty minutes in the AHL last season. He last skated in the NHL in the 2008-09 season with Carolina.

Brookbank Signs With Blackhawks

News: Wade Brookbank signed a two-year deal with the Blackhawks on Sunday for reportedly $2.5 million, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: The physical Wade Brookbank will be used for defensive depth. Brookbank had three goals, 11 assists and was a plus-11 in 80 games with the Ducks last season and can help solve one of the Hawks' problem areas by killing penalties.

News: The Penguins sent D Wade Brookbank, LW Luca Caputi, C Dustin Jeffrey, RW Nick Johnson, RW Konstantin Pushkarev, C Wyatt Smith, LW Eric Tangradi, C Joe Vitale, RW Tim Wallace, D Robert Bortuzzo, D Jonathan D'Aversa, D Chris Lee and G Brad Thiessen to the AHL on Wednesday. First-round draft pick D Simon Despres has been sent to Saint John of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Analysis: Tangradi and Caputi are talented young prospects who had a shot at making the Pens squad, but there just wasn't room for them. They are the only real long-term keepers in this group for the time being, so ignore the others in all formats.

Pens pick up enforcer Brookbank

News: The Penguins signed defenseman Wade Brookbank to a contract Friday. Terms of the deal were not released.
Analysis: The 31-year-old Brookbank had one goal and 40 penalty minutes in 27 games with the Hurricanes in 2008-09. Brookbank has appeared in 127 career NHL games over parts of four seasons with Nashville, Vancouver, Boston and Carolina. He was part of the Penguins organization in 2006-07, when he had one goal and 116 penalty minutes in 39 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL. Brookbank is merely an enforcer when up in the NHL and should only be used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

News: The Carolina Hurricanes obtained left wing Jussi Jokinen from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday for left wing Wade Brookbank, defenseman Josef Melichar and a fourth-round draft pick.
Analysis: Brookbank has appeared in 127 NHL games, including 27 this season, recording six goals and 345 penalty minutes overall. Melichar has four assists in 15 games this season for the Hurricanes. He has never been an offensive threat and is mostly on the ice to act as an enforcer. Ignore him in all formats. Melichar can also be ignored in all formats.

News: Hurricanes LW Ryan Bayda and D Wade Brookbank, both unrestricted free agents, agreed to one-year deals worth $475,000 in 2008-09 with Carolina on Tuesday. Meanwhile, D Tim Conboy, a restricted free agent, signed a two-year contract that this season will pay him $475,000 at the NHL level or $100,000 if he is sent to the minors, and $500,000 at the NHL level in 2009-10.

News: Hurricanes defensemen Glen Wesley and Wade Brookbank both skated Tuesday, according to the News and Observer and could make their returns to the ice Wednesday against the Blackhawks. "Hopefully we'll get one back," Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette said. "There's a chance we'll get both. Either way, I don't think we'll need to recall anyone."

Analysis: Brookbank would normally be a player to keep an eye on in Roto leagues which heavily reward penalty minutes, but unfortunately his playing time is so sporadic that he cannot be relied on in all but the largest of formats.
