Extension On Tap For Flames' Giordano

News: Flames GM Brad Treliving said Tuesday that signing Mark Giordano (biceps) to a contract extension is the organization's "No. 1 priority," Roger Millions of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Mark Giordano remains under contract through the end of the 2015-16 season, but after the blueliner was the runaway favorite for the Norris Trophy prior to tearing his biceps in late February, the Flames obviously want to lock him up long term before he hits the open market. There was some hope that Giordano might have been able to return during the Flames' second-round series loss to the Ducks, but the 31-year-old said that the Western Conference Finals was considered the more realistic target. In any event, Giordano should be healthy by the time training camp rolls around, making him a candidate to be among the first defensemen selected in fantasy drafts next season.

Flames' Giordano Likely Out For Week

News: Mark Giordano (biceps) is unlikely to be available this week, the Calgary Herald reports.
Analysis: Mark Giordano can seemingly be ruled out for Tuesday's Game 3 and Friday's Game 4, but he could perhaps return later in the series, if his teammates are able to extend it past four or five games.

Flames' Giordano (Biceps) Participates In Practice

News: Mark Giordano (biceps) was able to fully participate in the Flames' practice on Saturday.
Analysis: It still isn't clear when Mark Giordano might be able to return to Calgary's lineup. However, participating fully in practice is certainly a step in the right direction. He may be able to suit up for the Flames at some point during their Round 2 series with the Ducks.

Flames' Giordano Resumes Skating

News: Mark Giordano (biceps) recently resumed skating again, Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: Other than suggesting that Mark Giordano hasn't been ruled out from playing during the postseason, the Flames haven't offered any indication about when specifically they might expect the blueliner to play. The fact that Giordano's back on the ice suggests that there's a possibility he could be available later in the second-round series against the Ducks, though the Flames will undoubtedly need him to show increased involvement in practices before talk of a return gains momentum. At this time, the odds are probably more favorable that Giordano wouldn't be available until the Western Conference Finals.

Flames' Giordano Remains Sidelined

News: Mark Giordano -- who suffered a torn biceps muscle on Feb. 25 -- is progressing, but there is no timetable for his return to action.
Analysis: Mark Giordano has been able to hit the ice with his teammates and handle the puck and shoot some of late, but at this stage, per coach Bob Hartley, the Flames' captain "is not close" to a return. Calgary currently holds a 3-1 lead over Vancouver in the opening round of the playoffs.

Flames' Giordano Could Reurn Late In Postseason

News: Mark Giordano (biceps) skated on his own Monday, and hasn't ruled out a return later in the postseason, Flames play-by-play announcer Derek Willis reports.
Analysis: Mark Giordano remains a ways away from a return to the ice, but added hope of a return yet this season should the Flames advance further in the playoffs. He would need to be cleared by doctors before making that return, and admitted there's no guarantee that will happen, but the captain provided some fuel for the Flames on Monday with his comments. It's unclear how far the team would need to advance to acquire his services, but that will likely be played by ear moving forward.

Mark Giordano: (Torn Biceps) Out For Season

News: General manager Brad Treliving announced Monday that Mark Giordano will require surgery to repair a complete tendon tear of his biceps, which will sideline him for the remainder of the season, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: The season-ending injury is nearly as damaging to the Flames as Patrick Kane's loss is for the Blackhawks. With 48 points in 61 games, Mark Giordano was considered a frontrunner for the Norris Trophy, and has been the MVP of a Flames squad that surprisingly finds itself in playoff contention this late in the season. The outstanding two-way play Giordano brings to the ice is in no way replaceable, so it's not terribly surprising the Flames weren't more active in acquiring blue line help at the deadline. Giordano is expected to require 4-to-5 months to recover from the injury, putting on track to be healthy for the start of the 2015-16 campaign.

Flames Place Giordano (Upper Body) On IR

News: Mark Giordano (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Sunday, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 the FAN reports.
Analysis: Mark Giordano's injury dates back to Feb. 25, but his placement on injured reserve means he will miss Tuesday's contest in Philadelphia. The move will open up a roster spot, but it seems as though Giordano isn't far off from returning. His next chance will come Thursday against the Bruins.

Flames' Giordano Officially Scratched Friday

News: Mark Giordano (upper body) is officially being listed as a scratch for Friday's game against the Islanders, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Mark Giordano made a spirited effort to try and play Friday, but it was clear based on his activity in the pregame warmups that he was running at less than 100 percent. Rather than risk worsening the injury, the Flames will send their star blueliner to the press box, marking the first game that he'll have missed this season. Giordano's next crack at playing will come next Tuesday against the Flyers. Corey Potter replaces him in Friday's lineup.

Flames' Giordano Still Likely Out Friday

News: Though he was on the ice for pregame warmups, it appears unlikely Mark Giordano (upper body) will play Friday against the Islanders, NHL.com's Aaron Vickers reports.
Analysis: Mark Giordano's presence at warmups was quite the surprise after the Flames had ruled him out for the game earlier in the day, but any hope that he might play seemed to be extinguished when he failed to skate as part of a regular pairing. The blueliner didn't seem to have his usual zip while shooting the puck, so it looks like the Flames will play it safe and send him to the press box for this one. Official confirmation on his being scratched should become available minutes prior to the 7:00 ET puck drop, but those in daily leagues that planned on using him should start looking at other options quickly.

Flames' Giordano May Try To Play Friday

News: Mark Giordano (upper body) is on the ice for pregame warmups and could enter the lineup Friday against the Islanders, Roger Millions of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: This is quite the development, as the Flames had ruled Mark Giordano out for the evening just hours earlier. Apparently, Giordano felt healthy enough during his off-ice workout to campaign for his entry into the lineup, but coach Bob Hartley and the team's medical staff will assess his condition during warmups before rendering a verdict in his decision. Given that Giordano has been the top producing fantasy blueliner this season, his owners will surely want to keep tabs of his situation leading up to the puck drop.

Flames' Giordano (Upper Body) Does Off-Ice Work

News: Mark Giordano (upper body) did an off-ice workout Friday without any indications of a severe arm injury, Roger Millions of Sportsnet Calgary reports.
Analysis: Mark Giordano has already been ruled out for Friday, but the issue doesn't appear to be serious. Corey Potter may draw into the lineup Friday, but Giordano seems a strong possibility for the team's next contest Tuesday against the Flyers.

Flames' Giordano Ruled Out For Friday

News: Mark Giordano (upper body) will not play in Friday's game against the Islanders, Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun reports.
Analysis: Mark Giordano hasn't been ruled out beyond Friday, and his absence may allow Corey Potter to join the lineup for the first time all season. The blueliner continues to undergo tests for his injury, but the team should provide an update on his status before Tuesday's game in Philadelphia.

Flames' Giordano Iffy For Friday

News: The Flames didn't update the status of Mark Giordano (undisclosed injury) Thursday, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 reports.
Analysis: Per the report, Mark Giordano is still being evaluated and the Flames will likely recall a blueliner in advance of Friday's game against the Islanders. Giordano's availability could come down to a game-time call from coach Bob Hartley.

Flames' Giordano Injured Late Wednesday

News: Mark Giordano suffered an apparent injury in the final seconds of Wednesday's victory over the Devils, Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: It's not clear what type of setback Mark Giordano is dealing with, but the Flames figure to provide an update on his status prior to their next game Friday against the Islanders.

Flames' Giordano Staking Claim To Norris Trophy

News: Mark Giordano assisted on three of the Flames' four goals in a thrilling comeback victory over the Bruins on Monday.
Analysis: The three helpers give Mark Giordano 47 points on the season, matching his total from last season. Had Giordano not missed time with a broken ankle in 2013-14, he might have received more buzz for the Norris Trophy, but he'll have no such problem garnering attention on that front this time around. He leads all blueliners in scoring this season and is sitting on an impressive plus-15 rating.

Giordano Paces Flames With Six Shots In Win

News: Mark Giordano attempted six shots and was credited with an assist in Monday's victory over the Sharks.
Analysis: With 11 goals and 33 assists on the campaign, the Calgary captain is rapidly closing in on last season's career-best 47-point output. He's remained atop the leaderboard in defensive scoring just about all season and is currently outpacing the Pens' Kris Letang by three points.

Flames' Giordano Remains Hot

News: Mark Giordano notched an assist and four shots on goal in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Sabres.
Analysis: Mark Giordano still finds himself as the league's top-scoring blueliner with 41 points, and it's actually quite surprising he hasn't created some more separation from the Blues' Kevin Shattenkirk (39 points) in light of his recent play. In his last five games, Giordano has racked up six points and 17 shot attempts. If those shot totals keep up, the goals could start coming in droves for Giordano, who has surprisingly found the net just once in his last 13 contests.

Flames' Giordano Delivers Two Assists

News: Mark Giordano collected two assists in Saturday's win over the Sharks.
Analysis: Mark Giordano now has 39 points (11 goals) in 45 games, to go with a plus-20 rating. He has recorded at least one point in 31 games this season, making him the consistent fantasy defenseman thus far in 2014-15. Considering he is tied with Kevin Shattenkirk for the NHL-lead in defensemen scoring, Giordano is an automatic roll every game.

Flames' Giordano In Midst Of Cold Spell

News: Mark Giordano gathered a power-play assist and two PIM in Friday's loss to the Panthers.
Analysis: Though the point allowed Mark Giordano to tie the Blues' Kevin Shattenkirk for the NHL scoring lead among defensemen, the Flames blueliner has found himself in the middle of a relative cold spell. Friday's helper snapped a four-game scoring drought for Giordano, his longest spell of the season. The 31-year-old has provided too much production at this point to justify benching him and still remains on track for a career year, but it's probably safer to bet on more established rearguard stars like the Preds' Shea Weber or Habs' P.K. Subban to deliver greater returns over the second half of the season.

Flames' Giordano Scores Game-Winner

News: Mark Giordano scored his tenth goal of the season -- a game-winner in overtime -- as the Flames beat the Kings 4-3 on Monday.
Analysis: Mark Giordano's lamp-lighter completed a fabulous comeback for the Flames after Johnny Gaudreau scored a natural hat trick to send the game to overtime. The stud defenseman now has 34 points, a plus-15 rating, 25 PIM and 86 SOG in 36 games this season, and has been the most valuable fantasy rearguard in the NHL this season, just ahead of the Blues' Kevin Shattenkirk, who has six less points than Giordano but has 18 power-play points to Giordano's nine.

Flames' Giordano Lights Lamp

News: Mark Giordano scored the lone Calgary goal in a 2-1 loss to Dallas on Friday.
Analysis: Mark Giordano has been one of the few constants remaining for Calgary during its seven-game losing streak. He has seven points in nine December games and continues to easily lead the NHL in defenseman scoring.

Flames' Giordano Still On Fire

News: Mark Giordano scored his eighth goal of the season in a 4-3 loss to Buffalo on Thursday.
Analysis: Incredibly enough, Mark Giordano has scored in all but six games this season and is eighth in scoring overall at 30 points. He has six more points than any other defender and has looked otherworldly this year.

Flames' Giordano Slowing, But Producing

News: Mark Giordano gathered an assist and attempted five shots on goal in Thursday's win over the Avalanche.
Analysis: Mark Giordano hasn't provided a multi-point game since early November, but he's still been steadily producing to maintain his league lead in defensemen scoring. He's notched a point in all but two of his last 11 games, boosting his total to six goals and 21 assists on the season.

Flames' Giordano (Eye) Returns Wearing Visor

News: Mark Giordano (eye) returned to action to start the second period of Saturday's game sporting stitches to close a cut near the corner of his eye. He was wearing a visor.
Analysis: The eye was already starting to swell and bruise, and those trademark bushy brows appeared to be manicured differently to accommodate the treatment. But he was smiling and ready to go. #relief
