Pens' Martin Was Gone With The Wind Tuesday

News: Paul Martin collected a power-play assist and five blocked shots Tuesday in a 4-1 win over the Wild.
Analysis: Pittsburgh reunited Paul Martin with Kris Letang on its top defensive pairing Tuesday and the move paid immediate dividends. The two blueliners each topped 27 minutes of play and helped to keep the puck out of Pittsburgh's end. Martin's helper on the man advantage was his first of the year on the power play, giving him one goal and three points in 11 contests.

Martin Makes It Through Uneventful Thursday

News: Paul Martin was held pointless with a plus-1 rating in just over 17 minutes (17:17) of action Thursday against Los Angeles.
Analysis: He made it through the contest without missing a shift. The Pittsburgh defenseman, who missed Wednesday's practice due to a stiff back, saw 3:06 TOI penalty killing but just 20 seconds on the power play.

Pens' Martin Expected To Play Thursday

News: Paul Martin will play Thursday after missing Wednesday's practice with a stiff back, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: The Penguins have looked to minimize Paul Martin's role, as the defender is in the final year of a five-year, $25 million contract and is expected to be traded at the deadline. However, with Olli Maatta expected to miss the month of November following thyroid surgery, Martin could move back into a more offensive role. He's averaging 59 seconds on the second-line power play, but could see more time there in November with Maatta out. Martin has two even-strength points in eight games and ranks third on the Pens with 11 blocked shots.

Points No Longer Coming Easy For Pens' Martin

News: Paul Martin's pointless streak reached six games Wednesday against the Rangers.
Analysis: He led Pittsburgh with 30:05 TOI in Game 4, compiling three hits and a blocked shot. Paul Martin remains stuck on eight points, but he's playing some of his best hockey in a Penguins sweater.

Pens' Martin Leads Playoff Scorers

News: After four games, Paul Martin leads the league in playoff scoring with eight points (all assists).
Analysis: Five of his eight assists have come courtesy of special teams, including three on the power play and two short-handed. Paul Martin, who struggled through an injury-plagued regular season, has taken advantage of Pittsburgh's decision to put him on the team's top power-play unit over Kris Letang.

Pens' Martin Stays Hot

News: Paul Martin recorded two assists in Wednesday's overtime loss to the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Despite his team losing the game in dramatic fashion, Paul Martin had another productive game. He has posted two assists in every game so far in the first round, and currently leads the league in points and assists in the playoffs.

Penguins' Martin Tallies Two Assists

News: Paul Martin played 28:34 and had two assists against the Blue Jackets in Monday's Game 3 win for Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Paul Martin, in addition to playing a ton of minutes every night, has two assists in all three games of the postseason so far.

Pens' Martin Makes It Look Easy Wednesday

News: Paul Martin collected a pair of power-play assists Wednesday against the Red Wings.
Analysis: He had just one point in three games since returning from a broken hand prior to Wednesday. Paul Martin blocked three shots and registered two shots, finishing with a minus-2 rating. He saw 27:33 TOI in a game that went a shootout, nearly five minutes more than the next closest Penguins play (Brooks Orpik, 22:54 TOI). Martin's two assist-night was his first of the season (37 games).

Martin Stays Put On Pens' Top PP Unit

News: Along with Matt Niskanen, Paul Martin will remain at the point on Pittsburgh's top power-play unit Wednesday, according to the Penguins' website.
Analysis: Paul Martin picked up an assist in his first game back from a broken hand Thursday, but has been shut out in the last two games. He should benefit Wednesday from the expected return of Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz to the No. 1 power-play unit.

Pens' Martin Leads Victorious Return Thursday

News: Paul Martin picked up his first power-play goal of the year -- and second game-winner -- Thursday against the Jets. It was his first game back after an 18-game IR stint due to a hand injury.
Analysis: He added a season-high three hits and two blocks in his first action since early February. Paul Martin led all Pittsburgh blueliners with 23:46 TOI and played on the No. 1 power-play unit. He makes for a great waiver-wire grab if he was cut loose in your league.

Pens' Martin Will Return Thursday

News: Coach Dan Blysma confirmed Paul Martin (hand) will play Thursday against the Jets.
Analysis: With his injured hand no longer presenting any obstacles in his stick handling, Paul Martin will join the Penguins' lineup for the first time since Feb. 7. Martin was averaging 24:23 of ice time for the Penguins before the injury and should be tabbed for a similarly large role immediately upon returning.

Penguins' Martin Could Return Thursday

News: Paul Martin (hand) appears likely to return to the Pittsburgh lineup Thursday against the Jets, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: In addition to skating as part of a defensive pairing, Paul Martin ran the top power-play unit for the Pens, a sign that would typically indicate he's in the lineup. Martin said after practice that he's "ready to go" for Thursday, but we'll wait for his removal from injured reserve before confirming his return.

Pens' Martin Close To Returning

News: Paul Martin (hand) said he hopes to return Thursday in Winnipeg, but will play "for sure" by the weekend.
Analysis: "I thought I'd be a little sore, but no issues," Paul Martin said after Tuesday's practice. "Had a bag skate earlier this morning and then now this one, so it feels pretty good." Pittsburgh's puck-moving defenseman has missed the team's last 18 games with a broken hand sustained in the Sochi Olympics. Martin has scored only two goals and 12 points in 33 games, but could be an under-the-radar fantasy pickup down the stretch.

Penguins' Martin Able To Practice

News: Paul Martin (hand) returned to a full practice on Monday.
Analysis: While Paul Martin's presence at practice Monday is a positive step, coach Dan Bylsma did not provide a timetable for the blueliner's possible return to the Penguins' lineup.

X-Rays Looming For Pens' Martin

News: Paul Martin (hand) will receive an X-ray Sunday to determine how well he's progressed in his recovery, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Paul Martin didn't skate on his own Tuesday due to an illness, but the health of his hand is obviously the greater concern here. The defenseman hasn't suited up since the Olympics, and he'll need to receive clearance from doctors before being able to take part in full-contact practices.

Pens' Martin Gets Some Work In At Practice

News: Paul Martin (hand) was practicing stick handling and shooting Monday, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Paul Martin required some extra padding to cover up his hand while taking part in the activities, but it's good to see him back on the ice in some capacity. He underwent surgery on the hand in late February and appears to be about two-to-four weeks away from returning from injured reserve.

Pens' Martin Return Date Still Unknown

News: The Penguins still have no target date for Paul Martin (hand) returning to practice, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Analysis: The Olympic defenseman still has his right hand in a supportive device. Paul Martin has only 12 points in 33 games after picking up 23 points in 34 contests during an abbreviated 2012-13.

Pens Move Martin To IR

News: Paul Martin (hand) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday.
Analysis: The placement of Paul Martin and Kris Letang (illness) on IR opens up roster spots for Marcel Goc and Lee Stempniak, who were acquired before Wednesday's trade deadline. Martin is expected to be sidelined for another four or five weeks while he recovers from a broken hand.

Pens' Martin Undergoes Surgery On Hand

News: Paul Martin underwent surgery to repair his broken hand Thursday, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Doctors recommended Paul Martin undergo surgery to speed up his healing, but the expectation is still that the 32-year-old will need about four-to-six weeks to recover. Martin suffered the fracture during the Olympics, and figures to focus on getting ready to contribute in the playoffs.

Penguins' Martin Out With Broken Hand

News: Paul Martin will be sidelined four-to-six weeks due to a broken hand that he suffered during the Sochi Olympics, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: The report adds that the Penguins hope Paul Martin, who has 12 points in 33 games to date, will be ready for action in time for the playoffs, which suggests that they aren't counting on him for the regular-season stretch run in April.

Penguins' Martin Could Miss A Month

News: Paul Martin will miss Friday's Olympic semifinal game due to a hand injury suffered in Team USA's previous game, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: The extent of Paul Martin's setback is uncertain, but early reports indicate he could be out about a month, so it's likely he will miss some action when NHL play resumes next week. With fellow defenseman Kris Letang also sidelined, it appears the Penguins will come out of the Olympic break without their top two defensemen.

Pens' Martin Won't Play Versus Canada

News: Paul Martin will not play in Friday's semifinal contest against Canada for undisclosed reasons, ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Paul Martin was able to practice on Thursday, so his absence is peculiar. He will be replaced in the lineup by the Carolina Hurricanes' Justin Faulk, who has yet to play in Sochi.

Olympics Crucial For Pens' Martin

News: Paul Martin, who has one point in 10 games since returning from a broken leg, will play on Team USA's blue line during the Olympics.
Analysis: Penguins coach Dan Bylsma will also be doubling as the coach of the American squad in Sochi. If Paul Martin performs well during the tournament, he'll have a good chance of playing a more important role for Pittsburgh and perhaps on the power play down the stretch. The organization has eased him back into action, but he could offer some upside over the final seven weeks of the regular season. Martin has scored 12 points in 33 games after racking up 23 points in 34 contests a year ago.

Pens' Martin Returns Monday

News: Paul Martin went pointless in his first action since Nov. 25 in Monday's loss to the Panthers.
Analysis: He saw just over 20 minutes of ice time, including 1:12 on the power play. Coach Bylsma said he would ease Paul Martin back into key roles, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him back on the top power-play unit after Monday's embarrassing home loss.

Pens' Martin Back Monday

News: Paul Martin (leg) will play Monday against Florida, according to Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Analysis: It was only a matter of time before Paul Martin returned to the lineup. Coach Dan Bylsma has stated he'll initially keep Martin off the top power-play unit and ease him back into the lineup.
