Pens' Martin Collects Assist In Loss

News: Paul Martin notched an assist in Thursday's loss to the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: As his appointment to the U.S. Olympic team last winter would suggest, Paul Martin is a quality real-life defenseman, but he's never carried much appeal in fantasy circles. The assist in Thursday's game gives him a pedestrian 14 points in 50 games, dimming much of his value. Aside from a solid plus/minus (plus-14) and a decent total of blocked shots (95), Martin is a below-average contributor in just about every other category.

Pens' Martin Notches Two Helpers

News: Paul Martin assisted on the game-winning goal and an empty-netter in Tuesday's 5-3 victory over Winnipeg.
Analysis: He'd gone scoreless in three straight games, but bounced back nicely in this one. Paul Martin's not a huge offensive provider for the Penguins, but he'll come along and get some points here and there in such a productive offense.

Rare Offensive Production For Pens' Martin

News: Paul Martin had a rare multi-point evening Tuesday, scoring a goal and adding an assist to go with five blocked shots and a plus-2 rating in a 7-2 demolition of Minnesota.
Analysis: He doesn't get on the board often these days, as Paul Martin still hasn't hit double-digit points for the season. This can safely be written off as Martin coming along with his teammates on their offensive binge against the hapless Wild.

Pens' Martin (Undisclosed) Makes Wednesday Return

News: Paul Martin (undisclosed) will return to the ice Wednesday against the Bruins.
Analysis: Paul Martin hasn't seen the ice since Dec. 18, but will return to the Penguins' first defensive pairing alongside Kris Letang. The 33-year-old had recorded seven points in 31 contests prior to suffering the injury.

Pens' Martin (Undisclosed) Activated From IR

News: Paul Martin (undisclosed) was activated from injured reserve Wednesday, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Though coach Mike Johnston wouldn't definitively say that Paul Martin would play Wednesday against the Bruins, the blueliner's activation almost surely indicates that will be the case. With Scott Harrington dispatched to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to open up a roster sport, Martin figures to claim a spot on the top pairing next to Kris Letang. Martin doesn't offer an overwhelming amount of offensive ability, but the Olympian might be the Penguins' top shutdown defender.

Pens' Martin (Undisclosed) Could Return Wednesday

News: Coach Mike Johnston indicated that Paul Martin (undisclosed) would likely be a game-time decision for Wednesday's game against the Bruins, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: At the very least, Johnston said the blueliner would be back no later than Saturday against the Canadiens, but it seems likely that he'll play Wednesday. He was able to get in a full practice Tuesday, taking part in pairing work while also assuming a spot on the Pens' power play. Paul Martin was on the ice for Wednesday's morning skate as well, and assuming he suffers no late setbacks, he'll likely step into the lineup for his first game since Dec. 18. The Penguins figure to reassign either Scott Harrington or Derrick Pouliot to the minors to clear a roster spot for Martin's return.

Pens' Martin (Undisclosed) Practices Alone Monday

News: Paul Martin (undisclosed) didn't practice with the team Monday but did make an appearance as practice was ending and got in some conditioning drills with assistant coach Gary Agnew, Sam Kasan of the Penguins' official site reports.
Analysis: Paul Martin was aiming for a return Wednesday against the Bruins, but he will likely need to get in a practice session Tuesday as he is expected to in order for that to be a realistic goal. The decision on his status won't come until Wednesday, but in the event he is unavailable, the next chance for Martin to return will come Saturday against the Canadiens.

Pens' Martin Aiming For Wednesday Return

News: Paul Martin (undisclosed) is aiming to return to the lineup Wednesday versus the Bruins, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Paul Martin has been on the ice for over a week, and it appears that he's on the cusp of rejoining the team for full practices. The Penguins will continue to assess Martin's condition as he increases his activities, but probably won't want him back in the lineup until he's 100 percent healthy. Martin last played for the Penguins on Dec. 18.

Pens' Martin (Undisclosed) Misses Practice

News: Paul Martin (undisclosed) did not practice Thursday.
Analysis: Paul Martin, who is hoping to make his return this weekend, practiced with the team Tuesday but did not play Wednesday, marking his sixth straight absence. At this point, he should be considered very questionable to play Friday against Tampa Bay, and coach Mike Johnston said he hopes Martin is cleared in the next day or two.

Pens' Martin Targeting A Weekend Return

News: Paul Martin (undisclosed) is hoping to resume playing with the Penguins over the weekend.
Analysis: Paul Martin practiced with the team Tuesday, but coach Mike Johnston has already ruled him out for Wednesday's match versus the Hurricanes, the sixth game in a row he'll have missed. The blueliner has been reporting improvement with each successive day, however, putting a return in sight. He had compiled seven points in 31 games prior to landing on IR.

Pens' Martin To Sit Again Monday

News: Paul Martin (undisclosed) took part in an on-ice workout Sunday, but won't travel with the team to New Jersey for Monday's match. "There's no immediate plans for [Martin] to join the team," coach Mike Johnston said after the session.
Analysis: A day after suggesting Paul Martin was a "few steps away" from playing, Johnston seemed to backtrack a little bit in his assessment of the blueliner's health. While it doesn't sound like Martin has hit any snags in his recovery, he'll still need some more practice time in order to feel completely comfortable with his health.

Pens' Martin Back Monday?

News: Paul Martin (undisclosed) is getting close to a return and is just a "few steps away," according to coach Mike Johnston.
Analysis: Paul Martin won't play Saturday despite taking part in the Pens' gameday skate, but the veteran blueliner could make his return as soon as Monday. Pittsburgh has greatly missed his elite puck-moving skills. Martin's offense is down -- he has but seven points in 31 games -- but he's averaging nearly two blocked shots per night, with 58 total on the season.

Pens' Martin On Ice For Morning Skate

News: Paul Martin (undisclosed) was on the ice for Saturday's morning skate, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Paul Martin was placed on injured reserve under mysterious circumstances a week earlier, missing the team's previous three games as a result. Since the Penguins declined to provide a timetable for his return from the injury, there's no guarantee that his presence on the ice for morning skate will result in his return to the lineup Saturday versus the Capitals. Expect coach Mike Johnston to provide a clearer update on his status for the game once the team completes their morning session.

Pens Place Martin On IR

News: Paul Martin (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Paul Martin's move to injured reserve will force him to miss the Penguins' next three games, with the blueliner not eligible to return until after the three-day Christmas break. The injury was reported seemingly out of nowhere following Saturday's morning skate, and it's still not known what issue Martin might be dealing with. Expect the Penguins to shine more light on his situation in the upcoming days.

Pens' Martin Scratched With Likely Injury Saturday

News: Paul Martin will be scratched for Saturday's game against the Panthers, presumably due to an undisclosed injury, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: It's unclear what might be ailing Paul Martin, who played a whopping 25:58 in Thursday's shutout win over the Avalanche, more than three minutes above his average ice time for the season. He wasn't present for Saturday's morning skate and will be forced to the press box for the first time this season along with fellow top-four blueliner Christian Ehrhoff (lower body). Consider Martin day-to-day for the moment, with more word likely to come about his condition by the end of Saturday.

Pens' Martin Fine For Tuesday

News: Paul Martin (face) took part in the Pens' game-day skate and appears set to skate against New Jersey on Tuesday.
Analysis: The blueliner looks like a go against the team that drafted him. Pittsburgh is down at least one defenseman (Kris Letang) with a second (Robert Bortuzzo) questionable, leading to Brian Dumoulin's recall from AHL Wilkes-Barre.

Pens' Martin Questionable Tuesday

News: Paul Martin took a puck off his face during practice Monday and is questionable against New Jersey on Tuesday, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: The Penguins recalled Brian Dumoulin from AHL Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday morning, leading to speculation that Paul Martin might not be able to go against the Devils. The defenseman leads Pittsburgh with 44 blocked shots, but has just a goal and five assists in 23 games.

Pens' Martin Was Gone With The Wind Tuesday

News: Paul Martin collected a power-play assist and five blocked shots Tuesday in a 4-1 win over the Wild.
Analysis: Pittsburgh reunited Paul Martin with Kris Letang on its top defensive pairing Tuesday and the move paid immediate dividends. The two blueliners each topped 27 minutes of play and helped to keep the puck out of Pittsburgh's end. Martin's helper on the man advantage was his first of the year on the power play, giving him one goal and three points in 11 contests.

Martin Makes It Through Uneventful Thursday

News: Paul Martin was held pointless with a plus-1 rating in just over 17 minutes (17:17) of action Thursday against Los Angeles.
Analysis: He made it through the contest without missing a shift. The Pittsburgh defenseman, who missed Wednesday's practice due to a stiff back, saw 3:06 TOI penalty killing but just 20 seconds on the power play.

Pens' Martin Expected To Play Thursday

News: Paul Martin will play Thursday after missing Wednesday's practice with a stiff back, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: The Penguins have looked to minimize Paul Martin's role, as the defender is in the final year of a five-year, $25 million contract and is expected to be traded at the deadline. However, with Olli Maatta expected to miss the month of November following thyroid surgery, Martin could move back into a more offensive role. He's averaging 59 seconds on the second-line power play, but could see more time there in November with Maatta out. Martin has two even-strength points in eight games and ranks third on the Pens with 11 blocked shots.

Points No Longer Coming Easy For Pens' Martin

News: Paul Martin's pointless streak reached six games Wednesday against the Rangers.
Analysis: He led Pittsburgh with 30:05 TOI in Game 4, compiling three hits and a blocked shot. Paul Martin remains stuck on eight points, but he's playing some of his best hockey in a Penguins sweater.

Pens' Martin Leads Playoff Scorers

News: After four games, Paul Martin leads the league in playoff scoring with eight points (all assists).
Analysis: Five of his eight assists have come courtesy of special teams, including three on the power play and two short-handed. Paul Martin, who struggled through an injury-plagued regular season, has taken advantage of Pittsburgh's decision to put him on the team's top power-play unit over Kris Letang.

Pens' Martin Stays Hot

News: Paul Martin recorded two assists in Wednesday's overtime loss to the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Despite his team losing the game in dramatic fashion, Paul Martin had another productive game. He has posted two assists in every game so far in the first round, and currently leads the league in points and assists in the playoffs.

Pens' Martin Makes It Look Easy Wednesday

News: Paul Martin collected a pair of power-play assists Wednesday against the Red Wings.
Analysis: He had just one point in three games since returning from a broken hand prior to Wednesday. Paul Martin blocked three shots and registered two shots, finishing with a minus-2 rating. He saw 27:33 TOI in a game that went a shootout, nearly five minutes more than the next closest Penguins play (Brooks Orpik, 22:54 TOI). Martin's two assist-night was his first of the season (37 games).
