Ortmeyer Accepts Training Camp Invite from the Islanders

News: Ortmeyer accepted a training camp invite from the Islanders Monday, according to Newsday.
Analysis: The Islanders are struggling through a rash of injuries to their forwards, so they have extended invites to a few players over the past couple of days. Neither Ortmeyer nor any of the other players is expected to make the team.

Ortmeyer plays four minutes in return

News: Sharks forward Jed Ortmeyer returned to the lineup on Tuesday against the Wild after missing three games with a lower-body injury. He replaced C Scott Nichol, who was scratched because of an upper-body injury. Ortmeyer had no points in 4:46 of ice time and finished at even. He had one shot on net.
Analysis: Ortmeyer usually averages 12 minutes a game, so we wouldn't be surprised if he suffered a setback. Ortmeyer has no goals and two points in his last 15 games after totaling a season-high three goals and seven points in January. We figured his hot streak wouldn't last and it hasn't. Ortmeyer fills his role as a checking-line forward and still has low-end Fantasy appeal.

Ortmeyer has third two-assist game

News: Sharks RW Jed Ortmeyer collected two assists for the third time this season on Thursday against the Blues. He also had two assists on Nov. 7 against the Penguins and Jan. 18 against the Flames.
Analysis: Ortmeyer has actually produced three goals and five assists in his last eight games. He is also at plus-6 in that span. It has been his best stretch of hockey this season. Ortmeyer fills his role as a checking-line forward and still has low-end Fantasy appeal.

Ortmeyer suddenly getting involved

News: Sharks RW Jed Ortmeyer scored twice in Saturday's win over the Sabres, giving him six points in his last four games and 15 on the season.
Analysis: Ortmeyer hasn't got a promotion or landed on the power-play unit. Instead, he's just managing to get a little more involved recently. He remains a third-line presence for San Jose and has minimal Fantasy value.

Ortmeyer has game-changing goal

News: Sharks RW Jed Ortmeyer scored a goal and finished at plus-1 during Saturday's game against the Blues. Ortmeyer netted his fourth to make it 2-1 after a bad giveaway by Blues defenseman Erik Johnson. "Obviously, it was the difference in the game," Ortmeyer said. "I think it took a lot of momentum away from them and gave us lots of energy."
Analysis: Ortmeyer has three points in his last four games and has six points in 21 games this season. Ortmeyer flew under the offseason radar when San Jose picked him up from Nashville. But he has been a great lower-line addition. Still, he doesn't score a lot. Ortmeyer is merely a Fantasy flier in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats.

Ortmeyer has first goal with San Jose

News: RW Jed Ortmeyer scored his first goal as a member of San Jose during Saturday's game against the Wild. It came in the second period to cut Minnesota's early 2-0 lead in half.
Analysis: The 30-year-old Ortmeyer spent the last two seasons with the Predators. He hasn't played regularly since 2005-06, but he is finally getting that chance again in 2009-10 with the Sharks. However, Ortmeyer is more of a lower-line forward and penalty killing specialist. Ortmeyer is merely a Fantasy flier in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats.

Ortmeyer heads to West Coast

News: The Sharks signed free agent forward Jed Ortmeyer to a one-year contract Thursday. "Jed is a skilled, two-way player who adds tremendous depth to our organization," Sharks GM Doug Wilson said. "He's the type of player that pushes his teammates and competes with a high level of energy."
Analysis: The 30-year-old Ortmeyer spent the last two seasons with the Predators. He played in 51 games with Nashville in 2007-08 posting eight points (four goals) and 32 penalty minutes before suffering a knee injury. Upon returning, he spent the majority of the 2008-09 season with Milwaukee (AHL) notching 23 points (10 goals) and 51 penalty minutes in 55 games. He also appeared in two games with Nashville. The defensive forward played parts of three seasons (2004-2007) with the New York Rangers. In 230 NHL games with the Rangers and Nashville, he has posted 32 points (13 goals) and 108 penalty minutes. Ortmeyer has little to no Fantasy value when in the NHL.

Ortmeyer healthy, sent to AHL

News: The Predators have sent RW Jed Ortmeyer to Milwaukee of the AHL. Ortmeyer hasn't played in an NHL game this season thanks to a knee injury suffered in preseason.
Analysis: Ortmeyer had just four goals and four assists in 51 games last season. He also had a minus-8 rating and 32 penalty minutes. He has never been anything more than a checking-line forward and can be ignored in Fantasy.

Ortmeyer progressing nicely

News: The Tennessean reports that Predators RW Jed Ortmeyer, who's been out with blood-clot complications from knee surgery, is getting closer to returning to practice. "He's progressing very well," GM David Poile said. "We're just now waiting on the written report. If that matches up with what we have from our medical staff at Vanderbilt, then the prognosis appears pretty good he'll be cleared."
Analysis: Ortmeyer had just four goals and four assists in 51 games last season. He also had a minus-8 rating and 32 penalty minutes. He has never been anything more than a checking-line forward and can be ignored in Fantasy.
