Devils' Ruutu Riding Small Streak

News: Tuomo Ruutu grabbed New Jersey's opening goal in Friday's 2-1 win over Washington, his second goal in as many games and third point in three.
Analysis: Tuomo Ruutu grazed an Eric Gelinas wrist shot in front of the goal to knot up the game on the power play. In the time he's spent with the Devils following his deadline day acquisition, Ruutu has had some productive stretches. He's a versatile player who can be used in all situations and is worth a look in deep leagues as a stopgap during the season's final week.

Devils' Ruutu Notches Goal In Shootout Loss

News: Tuomo Ruutu scored his seventh goal of the season -- and his second as a member of the Devils -- in Tuesday's shootout loss to the Sabres.
Analysis: Tuomo Ruutu notched his goal with about 13 minutes remaining in the third period, tipping home an Andy Greene shot to tie the game at two. The veteran forward very nearly had a two-goal night, but his breakaway shot attempt in the first period was denied by Sabres goalie Nathan Lieuwen.

Devils' Ruutu To Play Friday

News: Tuomo Ruutu (personal) will play Friday vs. the Panthers, Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Ruoto's wife, Emilia, gave birth to the couple's second child Thursday morning, with the proud father joining the team later on in the day following the exciting news. With Tuomo Ruutu back in the fold, coach Pete DeBoer will trot out the same lineup he used Tuesday for Friday's game.

Devils' Ruutu On Baby Watch

News: Tuomo Ruutu (personal) missed practice Thursday, but is expected to join his teammates in Florida for Friday's game against the Panthers, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Tuomo Ruutu's wife has been set to give birth for the last few days, and it appears Thursday will go down as the official due date. The forward will take the day off to be with his family before taking a private flight to Florida. He's expected to remain on the top line with Travis Zajac and Jaromir Jagr on Friday night.

Ruutu Enjoying Life With Devils

News: Tuomo Ruutu assisted on both New Jersey goals while compiling a plus-2 rating and four PIM in Tuesday's victory over Florida.
Analysis: After going scoreless in his Devils debut, Tuomo Ruutu's put up consecutive two-point games, adding good plus-minus and PIM in both.

Ruutu Notches First Points With Devils

News: Tuomo Ruutu recorded his first points as a Devil in Saturday's win over Carolina, notching a goal and an assist.
Analysis: Playing against his former squad, Tuomo Ruutu ultimately walked away as the hero Saturday, scoring his first game-winner of the season with seven minutes remaining in the third period. He skated on the top line with the Devils for most of the night, but still only saw 14:36 of total ice time in the victory. He's probably only a lineup consideration in deeper leagues at this point.

Hurricanes Trade Ruutu To New Jersey

News: Tuomo Ruutu was traded to the Devils on Wednesday in exchange for Andrei Loktionov and a conditional draft pick.
Analysis: Trading Tuomo Ruutu to the Devils is mostly a salary dump for the Hurricanes, as the forward is under contract for the next two seasons and carries a $4.75 million annual cap hit. The 31-year-old hasn't been especially effective this season with only 16 points and a minus-19 rating in 57 games. He could be installed on the third line for the Devils.

Canes' Ruutu Scores Lone Goal For Finland

News: Tuomo Ruutu scored Finland's lone goal in their 2-1 loss to Canada on Sunday.
Analysis: Tuomo Ruutu has mostly been a disappointment for Carolina this season with 16 points and a minus-15 rating in 52 games, but he at least allowed Finland to claim a point against the tough Canadian squad, as his tally effectively sent the game to overtime. The winger also had three assists in Finland's previous two games, making him one of the team's more productive skaters.

Canes' Ruutu Breaks Out Of Slump

News: Tuomo Ruutu assisted on the eventual game-winning goal Thursday against Buffalo, his first point in seven games.
Analysis: Given Tuomo Ruutu's third-line status and diminishing ice time (averging just under 10 minutes in his last five games), he does not make for a solid fantasy option in most formats these days.

Canes' Ruutu Showing Offensive, Defensive Deficiencies

News: Tuomo Ruutu, who has been skating primarily on the Canes' top line alongside Eric Staal and Jeff Skinner, was bumped down to the third line during Saturday's 5-2 loss to Toronto.
Analysis: Simply put, Tuomo Ruutu, who has zero points along with a minus-7 rating over his last six games, is simply not getting the job done at either end of the rink these days. Overall, the hapless Canes are just 2-4-4 in their last 10 games, so Ruutu's demotion could be just the start of wholesale line changes still to come courtesy of coach Kirk Muller. Either way, Ruutu does not make for a good fantasy start in any format right now.

Ruutu Scores In Losing Cause For 'Canes

News: Tuomo Ruutu scored his fourth goal of the season during Tuesday's 5-4 OT loss to Edmonton. He was also minus-2 on the night, the third consecutive game he's collected that stat.
Analysis: The good news is, Tuomo Ruutu has been promoted to the first line alongside Eric Staal and Jeff Skinner, but that may not last if he keeps posting plus-minus figures on the wrong side of the ledger. With just seven points and a minus-10 in 27 games this season, Ruutu's offensive contributions are being more than offset by his defensive shortcomings. There are better fantasy plays out there -- go find one.

Canes' Ruutu Heating Up

News: Tuomo Ruutu scored a goal during Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Devils. He now has three goals in his last five games.
Analysis: After a slow start to the season following a lower-body injury, Tuomo Ruutu has been spending a lot of time lately on the Canes' top line alongside Eric Staal, so the points are finally starting to come. He's also shooting the puck more too - he has nine shots on goal over his last two games combined. He's worth a speculative pickup in deeper fantasy formats.

Canes' Ruutu Filling Checking-Line Role

News: Tuomo Ruutu has just two assists through eight games so far this season, along with 12 shots on goal, 17 hits and a minus-3 rating.
Analysis: Shortly after his return to the lineup following a lower-body injury, Tuomo Ruutu auditioned briefly on the Canes' top line alongside Eric Staal and Alexander Semin, but that experiment did not last long. More recently, Ruutu has been playing on the third line with Riley Nash and rookie Elias Lindholm. Until he starts to fill a more prominent role offensively, Ruutu's fantasy value is limited to deeper formats only.

Canes' Ruutu Gets Promoted To Top Line

News: Tuomo Ruutu replaced Jiri Tlusty on the Canes' top line during Tuesday's 3-2 shootout loss to Chicago.
Analysis: Tuomo Ruutu was activated off injured reserve prior to the previous game - a 5-3 loss to Phoenix - and started on the fourth line. He had just 10:33 of ice time during that game, but saw his minutes jump to 17:13 against the Blackhawks. Now that he's playing alongside Eric Staal and Alexander Semin, Ruutu's fantsy value has just taken a spike upward. Go see if you can pluck him cheaply off your league's waiver wire.

Hurricanes Activate Ruutu From IR on Sunday

News: Tuomo Ruutu has been activated from injured reserve and will man the fourth line when the Hurricanes face the Coyotes on Sunday, according to the team's official site.
Analysis: Tuomo Ruutu had been dealing with a lower body injury from the preseason and had been placed on IR just prior to the start of the season. He'll start out on the fourth line and likely work his way up the ladder again. After missing most of last year, he has a ways to go before he is back at the level that saw him near the 20-goal plateau the two prior seasons.

Canes' Ruutu Skates With Teammates Saturday

News: Tuomo Ruutu (lower body) skated on the fourth line during Saturday's practice.
Analysis: Tuomo Ruutu had previously been skating on the side during practices, so this counts as progress for the veteran forward. It would seem unlikely that he'd be activated for Sunday's game against the Coyotes, but coach Kirk Muller may have seen enough from Ruutu to insert him back in the lineup. It's worthwhile to check back on his status in advance of Sunday's game.

Canes' Ruutu Nearing Return

News: Tuomo Ruutu (lower body) practiced Monday wearing a no-contact jersey and will travel with his teammates for their upcoming two-game road trip, the Raleigh News & Observer reports. "We'll see how [Ruutu] feels and where he's at [Tuesday]," coach Kirk Muller said.
Analysis: Tuomo Ruutu saw very little preseason action due to the injury, so even if he returns to the lineup this week, he's not likely to immediately see enough minutes to have a big impact offensively. Once he's up to full speed, Ruutu is worth owning in deeper formats, especially if he's playing on one of the top two scoring lines; however, he's not even close to being there yet.

Canes' Ruutu Still A Week Away

News: Tuomo Ruutu (lower body) may still be a week away from returning for the Hurricanes, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News and Observer reports.
Analysis: Tuomo Ruutu was placed on IR retroactively to Sept. 21 and will be eligible to be activated at any time. He apparently is not quite ready for action, so it might be unlikely he is able to play in the weekend games for the Hurricanes.

Canes Place Ruutu On IR

News: The Hurricanes placed Tuomo Ruutu (lower body) on Injured Reserve on Sunday, retroactive to September 21.
Analysis: The Canes claim the injury is not related to the hip injury Tuomo Ruutu suffered last season, which is good news if it's true. Since the placement on IR was retroactive, he's eligible to be activated at any time, but this should rule him out for at least the first game.

Canes' Ruutu Considered Week-To-Week

News: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford classified Tuomo Ruutu's lower body injury as a week-to-week ailment, the Raleigh News & Observer's Chip Alexander reports.
Analysis: Rutherford's words would seem to suggest that Tuomo Ruutu will miss Friday's season opener against the Red Wings, and possibly more time beyond that. The GM insisted that Ruutu's injury is not related to the hip ailment that required surgery in May, so it seems he's not dealing with any sort of setback. Though injuries limited him to 17 games last season, Ruutu is just two seasons removed from a 57-point season and could be a useful fantasy option if he can return to full health relatively quickly.

Canes' Ruutu Skips Practice Wednesday

News: Tuomo Ruutu (lower body) sat out Wednesday's practice, the Charlotte News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Though Tuomo Ruutu was able to return to preseason action last Friday, it seems he could still troubled by the hip that required surgery in late May. Coach Kirk Muller indicated he wasn't sure if he'd be ready for the start of the regular season, but the Hurricanes should have a better indication of that in a few days.

Hurricanes' Ruutu (Hip) Makes Preseason Debut

News: Tuomo Ruutu (hip) made his preseason debut Friday against the Senators, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: The Hurricanes figure to cap Tuomo Ruutu's minutes in his return to the ice following May hip surgery. The 30-year-old proved to be a proficient scorer in his last full season in 2011 (34 points in 72 games), making him a decent late-round target in some formats.

Canes' Ruutu Nearing Return To Game Action

News: Tuomo Ruutu (hip) could join the Carolina lineup soon for a preseason game, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Although Tuomo Ruutu has not made his preseason debut yet, it sounds like there is a very good chance he'll get a couple of games in before Opening Night against the Red Wings. Ruutu is coming back from hip surgery in May, so it's little surprise that he's being brought along slowly.

Hurricanes' Ruutu Back On Skates Following Hip Surgery

News: Tuomo Ruutu has been skating for several weeks after undergoing hip surgery in May, the Raleigh News & Observer reports. "There wasn't much I could do for a couple of months, being on crutches for a little over a month," Ruutu said. "Starting skating in July. It's been a battle."
Analysis: As expected, it sounds like Tuomo Ruutu's rehab is on track and he should be ready when training camp opens later this month. Although he played just 17 games last season, he scored nine points (4G, 5A) and showed some nice chemistry on a line with Jordan Staal and Jeff Skinner. He will likely fly under most NHL poolie's radars come opening day, so be prepared to pick him up cheap in the later rounds of your draft.

Canes' Ruutu (Hip) Undergoes Successful Surgery

News: Tuomo Ruutu underwent successful surgery on his hip shortly after the end of the regular season, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Tuomo Ruutu bypassed the procedure during the season, but the hip injury still cost him nearly the majority of the 66-game campaign, as he made his season debut March 21. With the procedure, he'll be ready to go come training camp and should be much healthier heading into this season.
