Semin Signs One-Year Deal With Montreal

News: Alexander Semin agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Montreal on Friday.
Analysis: There's no doubting that Alexander Semin carries an enormous amount of risk when it comes to team chemistry and under-performance, but there's also no doubting the 31-year-old has shown immense talent in the past. He badly underachieved at Carolina in 2014-15 with only six goals in 57 games, so this could be a prove-it year on the way to a better contract. It makes a ton of sense for the Canadiens to bring him in on a one-year-deal, given they were looking for a right wing but likely didn't want to lock him in for the long term.

Canes' Semin Placed On Waivers

News: Alexander Semin was placed on unconditional waivers Tuesday, and the Hurricanes are expected to buy out his contract, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin will be subject to waivers, and if he clears as expected, he'll be bought out by the team Wednesday afternoon. The 31-year-old has three years remaining on the five-year, $35 million extension he inked with Carolina in March of 2013., but vastly underachieved before the Hurricanes opted to the pull the plug. Semin tallied only six goals and 13 assists in 57 games in 2014-15. Despite those struggles, he could still provide some scoring punch on the second or third line of a team that possesses better depth at forward than the Hurricanes.

Canes' Semin Gets Goal In Loss

News: Alexander Semin registered a goal on one of his game-high eight shots on net in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Sabres.
Analysis: The Hurricanes blitzed the net all night, with Alexander Semin providing eight of the 52 shots the team put on Sabres goalie Anders Lindback. Active games like Monday's show what the 31-year-old is still capable of, but unfortunately, performances like this have not occurred nearly enough. With 19 points, a minus-10 rating, and several healthy scratches on his ledger, Semin might be the biggest fantasy bust this season.

Semin Back In Carolina Lineup Sunday

News: Alexander Semin (hamstring) is slated to play Sunday against the Bruins, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports.
Analysis: With Alexander Semin, who missed Saturday's game, back in the lineup, Brad Malone looks like the odd man out for Carolina up front on Sunday.

Hurricanes' Semin Out Saturday

News: Alexander Semin is not participating in warmups prior to Saturday's game against New Jersey and will not play, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin is dealing with a hamstring injury and missed Saturday's morning skate. Patrick Dwyer figures to fill in for Semin against the Devils.

Canes' Semin Expected To Sit With Hamstring Issue

News: Alexander Semin is expected to miss Saturday's game against the Devils due to a hamstring injury, Chantel McCabe of FOX Sports Florida reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin missed the Hurricanes' morning skate Saturday to receive further evaluation on the injury, so it appears safe to count him out for at least one game. Patrick Dwyer is expected to reenter the lineup in Semin's stead.

Canes' Semin Questionable For Saturday

News: Alexander Semin missed Friday's practice due to an undisclosed injury and is questionable to play Saturday against the Devils, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin was able to break an eight-game scoring drought with a goal in Thursday's win over the Penguins, but it appears to have come at the cost of his health. Considering the extent to which Semin has struggled this season and with the Hurricanes out of playoff contention, it wouldn't be a surprise if the team decided to err on the side of caution and hold the winger out Saturday.

Scoring Drought Continues For Canes' Semin

News: Alexander Semin was held off the scoresheet for the eighth consecutive game in Monday's loss to the Blackhawks.
Analysis: No two ways about it - with just 16 points in 47 games, Alexander Semin's season has been nothing short of disastrous. What's more, he's currently skating on the Canes' third line and no longer sees any time on the power play. Add it all up, and you get a fantasy value that is hovering dangerously close to zero. Avoid.

Canes' Semin Scores In Loss

News: Alexander Semin scored his third goal of the season in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Blackhawks.
Analysis: It's been a hugely disappointing season for Alexander Semin, but he's attempting to salvage it partially down the stretch as he's tallied four points in his last five contests. Even with seven points since the start of February, the winger has just 15 points on the year, so it's likely too little too late for the 30-year-old.

Carolina's Semin Slated For First-Line Duty

News: Alexander Semin practiced as a member of the Hurricanes' top line Thursday, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: He'll seemingly get the first crack at replacing Jiri Tlusty, who was dealt to the Jets on Wednesday. With only 14 points and a minus-8 rating over 35 games, Alexander Semin has been a massive bust this season, but has shown signs of life of late. He submitted arguably his best game of the season Tuesday against the Flyers, picking up two assists and leading the Hurricanes with seven shot attempts.

Semin Shows Up For 'Canes Tuesday

News: Alexander Semin fired a game-high seven shots on goal and tallied two assists -- accompanied by two PIM and a plus-1 rating -- in Tuesday's 4-1 win over Philadelphia.
Analysis: After going without a shot on goal in four consecutive games, it's nice to see Alexander Semin tally up nine shots (and three assists) over the last two contests. Perhaps he's trying to strut his stuff in the interest of escaping Carolina via trade.

Canes' Semin To Return To Lineup

News: Alexander Semin will play Friday against the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Alexander Semin spent the Hurricanes' previous two games in the press box as a healthy scratch. The winger has contributed a little bit more since his return from an upper-body injury in January, but he's still been a huge disappointment in his second season in Carolina. He's provided a measly two goals and 11 points in 32 games.

Canes' Semin Back In Lineup, Contributing

News: Alexander Semin has two points in four games since returning from a four-game stint as a healthy scratch. "He's bought in, he's worked hard recently in practice," coach Bill Peters said Wednesday. "He's been good in the games. He's been competitive. He's played with more pace and he's made play. He's playing as good as he has all year."
Analysis: It's nice to see Alexander Semin putting up points on the board once again, but he likely feels he has something to prove after being in the coach's doghouse; one wonders how long it will take for the usual complacency we're used to seeing from him creep back in. In any event, for those fantasy owners who rely on him, you may as well put him in your lineups as long as he's producing -- it may not last. For now, he continues to skate on the Canes' third line with Andrej Nestrasil and Nathan Gerbe, averaging roughly 16 minutes of ice time, including 1:40 on the second power play unit.

Canes' Semin Likely Back In Saturday

News: Alexander Semin is expected to rejoin the Hurricanes' lineup Saturday against the Rangers, Chantel McCabe of FOX Sports Carolinas reports.
Analysis: Coach Bill Peters reiterated after Friday's game against the Blues that he intended to get all of his healthy scratches back into the lineup for the second half of the team's back-to-back. Alexander Semin hasn't endeared himself to the coaching staff or fantasy owners this season, registering only eight points in 26 games -- a hideous output for a player making $7 million annually.

Canes' Semin Scratched For Third Straight

News: Alexander Semin will be scratched for a third straight game Tuesday against the Lightning, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Coach Bill Peters has grown tired of Alexander Semin's poor physical condition, which has resulted in horrendous numbers for the $7-million-a-year player. He's been scratched in nine of the past 13 contests and looks like he could be at risk of getting waived.

Canes' Semin: Two Games, Two Points

News: Alexander Semin picked up an assist Saturday and now has a helper in each of his last two games.
Analysis: Shhhhh ... don't say it out loud for fear you jinx him. He's getting ice time and he seems to like skating with Jeff Skinner. And both men have put up points in that situation. OK, superstitions aside -- fingers crossed this is the start of something, no ANYTHING, from this dud.

Hurricanes' Semin Will Play Thursday

News: Alexander Semin (upper body) will play Thursday against the Sabres.
Analysis: Alexander Semin is set to resume playing for the first time since Dec. 21, after missing the last seven games with the injury. He will skate on the Hurricanes' third line opposite Jeff Skinner and next to Riley Nash.

Hurricanes' Semin On Track To Play Thursday

News: Alexander Semin (upper body) is on track to return to action Thursday, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' website reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin took part in Thursday's morning skate, which gives him a chance to play Thursday night for the first time since Dec. 21. Expect Carolina to make an announcement regarding his status prior to game time.

Canes' Semin (Upper Body) Won't Play Friday

News: Alexander Semin (upper body) will not return to the lineup Friday versus the Flyers, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Coach Bill Peters said that while Alexander Semin has been able to resume skating with the team over the last few days, he still needs to get back to full speed before becoming a lineup option. Expect the Hurricanes to revisit his condition at Saturday's practice before determining if he'll be good to for Sunday's tilt with the Bruins.

Canes' Semin Skating, But Out Wednesday

News: Alexander Semin (upper body) will remain out of the lineup Wednesday versus the Penguins.
Analysis: Alexander Semin resumed practicing earlier this week, but since he was still skating as an extra at Wednesday's morning session, it doesn't appear that he's quite ready for a return. After Wednesday's contest, the Hurricanes will have a pair of games over the weekend, which could be a realistic target for Semin's addition to the lineup.

Hurricanes' Semin (Upper Body) Practicing Tuesday

News: Alexander Semin (upper body) is practicing Tuesday, NHL.com's Michael Smith reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin hasn't played since Dec. 21, but he may have a shot to return for Wednesday's contest in Pittsburgh. He has six points (one goal) in 22 appearances this season, and is averaging just 1.27 shots on goal per game.

Carolina's Semin Will Not Play Saturday

News: Alexander Semin (upper body) will not play in Saturday's game against the Lightning.
Analysis: Alexander Semin didn't even travel with the team to Tampa Bay, suggesting he might not be particularly close to a return. Despite the name recognition he carries, savvy fantasy owners probably shouldn't count on him at this point, as injuries and ineffectiveness have diminished most of his value. He's been limited to just 22 games this season and has provided one goal, six points and a minus-9 rating during that time.

Canes' Semin (Upper Body) Out Tuesday

News: Alexander Semin (upper body) will miss Tuesday's game against the Jets, Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin's absence from practice Monday foreshadowed his unavailability for Tuesday's contest against the Devils. The Hurricanes recalled Brendan Woods on Monday, who will likely draw into the lineup Tuesday in Semin's place. The team has a three-day Christmas break following Tuesday's contest, which could allow him to return for the team's next game Saturday against the Lightning.

Hurricanes' Semin Does Not Practice Monday

News: Alexander Semin (undisclosed) didn't take part in Carolina's practice Monday, Michael Smith of Hurricanes.NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin was likely held out of practice for maintenance reasons, although it might be worth keeping an eye on with Monday's recall of Brendan Woods. The 30-year-old should be considered day-to-day heading into Tuesday's game against the Devils as a result of his absence from Monday's practice.

Canes' Semin Will Play Sunday

News: Alexander Semin was activated from injured reserve Saturday and will return to the lineup Sunday against the Rangers, Dan Rosen of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin's injury has cost a couple of weeks, but he will finally return to the lineup. He has just one goal in 21 games this season, a ratio the Sabres would like to improve drastically moving forward.
