Canes' Semin (Upper Body) Out Tuesday

News: Alexander Semin (upper body) will miss Tuesday's game against the Jets, Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin's absence from practice Monday foreshadowed his unavailability for Tuesday's contest against the Devils. The Hurricanes recalled Brendan Woods on Monday, who will likely draw into the lineup Tuesday in Semin's place. The team has a three-day Christmas break following Tuesday's contest, which could allow him to return for the team's next game Saturday against the Lightning.

Hurricanes' Semin Does Not Practice Monday

News: Alexander Semin (undisclosed) didn't take part in Carolina's practice Monday, Michael Smith of Hurricanes.NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin was likely held out of practice for maintenance reasons, although it might be worth keeping an eye on with Monday's recall of Brendan Woods. The 30-year-old should be considered day-to-day heading into Tuesday's game against the Devils as a result of his absence from Monday's practice.

Canes' Semin Will Play Sunday

News: Alexander Semin was activated from injured reserve Saturday and will return to the lineup Sunday against the Rangers, Dan Rosen of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin's injury has cost a couple of weeks, but he will finally return to the lineup. He has just one goal in 21 games this season, a ratio the Sabres would like to improve drastically moving forward.

Hurricanes Activate Semin

News: The Hurricanes activated Alexander Semin (lower body) from injured reserve Saturday.
Analysis: Alexander Semin has missed Carolina's last five games, but this activation paves the way for him to return Sunday against the Rangers. However, he had just one goal and six points in 21 games before the injury.

'Canes Rule Out Semin For Saturday

News: Alexander Semin (lower body) has been ruled out for a return to action Saturday against the Rangers, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin participated in Saturday's morning session and looks to be close to playing, but coach Bill Peters opted to hold him out for an additional day. It's possible the Hurricanes wanted to avoid returning him to action amid a back-to-back scenario, so it wouldn't be especially surprising if he was activated in time for Sunday's rematch with the Rangers in New York. Though Semin's return is near, he's not worthy of a speculative add, as he amassed just one goal and six points in 21 games before landing on IR.

Hurricanes' Semin Could Be Back Saturday

News: Alexander Semin (lower body) was on the ice for Saturday's morning skate, but it's unclear if he'll play later in the evening against the Rangers.
Analysis: Coach Bill Peters acknowledged earlier in the week that it was possible Alexander Semin might return over the weekend, and he made a strong case early Saturday by taking part in rushes with the fourth line. However, he remained on the ice for extra work when most of the regulars departed, suggesting that he might not be quite ready to go. Expect Peters to provide official word on his status in the coming hours.

Hurricanes' Semin Could Return This Weekend

News: Head coach Bill Peters hopes Alexander Semin (lower body) will be able to return to action this weekend, Michael Smith of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin will miss at least one more game Thursday night, but he has nearly recovered from his lower-body injury, so it's possible he could be in the lineup for one or both of the two games the Hurricanes will play against the Rangers this weekend.

Hurricanes Shuttle Semin Over To IR

News: Alexander Semin (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Thursday.
Analysis: The announcement shouldn't catch anyone off guard after coach Bill Peters noted after Wednesday's practice that Alexander Semin wasn't close to suiting up for games. With his return timetable indefinite, Semin's placement on IR will free up a roster spot for Brett Bellemore (lower body), who is now healthy after missing the previous seven games.

Hurricanes' Semin Not Close To Return

News: Coach Bill Peters said Wednesday that Alexander Semin (lower body) isn't nearing a return to action, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: As a result, expect Alexander Semin to sit out his second straight game Thursday versus the Lightning, with Saturday's tilt in Philadelphia seemingly a long shot as well. The winger's third season in Carolina has been an absolute disaster, as he's notched just one goal and six points in 21 games.

Hurricanes' Semin Out Monday

News: Alexander Semin will not play Monday due to an undisclosed injury, Mike Maniscalco of WRAL Sports reports.
Analysis: It's not clear what type of setback Alexander Semin is dealing with, but he will be unavailable Monday. Expect an update on his status as more details become available.

Canes' Semin Finally Scores

News: In his 20th game of the season, Alexander Semin finally broke through with his first goal of the year -- and his 500th NHL point -- in a 2-1 loss to the Capitals on Thursday
Analysis: In a piece of mild irony, the previously scoreless Alexander Semin was the only one who could score on Braden Holtby in this one. A three-time 30-goal man who put 22 in the net last year, Semin has been off to a truly miserable start this year. His lack of goals hasn't really been bad luck -- he's gone without a single shot on goal a whopping seven times in 20 games, and Thursday's five shots represent a season high. Maybe he's turning a corner, or maybe he just got up for this game against his old Washington mates.

Canes' Semin Healthy Scratch Again Thursday

News: Alexander Semin will be a healthy scratch Thursday against the Kings.
Analysis: It's the second time this month that Alexander Semin has been a healthy scratch, as coach Bill Peters appears to be growing frustrated with his lack of production. Semin has no goals and five points over 14 games and has seen his average ice time drop over three minutes from a season earlier.

Hurricanes' Semin To Play Tuesday

News: Alexander Semin (upper body) will play in Tuesday's game against the Stars, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' website reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin will return to action after sitting out the last two games. He will skate on the Hurricanes' second line next to Riley Nash and opposite Nathan Gerbe.

Canes' Semin Will Not Play On Sunday

News: Alexander Semin (upper body) will not play in Sunday's game against the Sharks, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News and Observer reports.
Analysis: This will be the second game that Alexander Semin will miss due to the injury, after missing Saturday's game against the Bruins. This injury came at a bad time for Semin as he was just starting to pick up some offensive momentum. The 30-year-old winger has not scored a goal this season but has added five assists in 13 games played.

Canes' Semin (Upper Body) Out Saturday

News: Alexander Semin will miss Saturday's game against the Bruins with an upper-body injury.
Analysis: It's unclear at what point Alexander Semin sustained the injury, but it will sideline the winger just as he was starting to establish some semblance of offensive momentum. Semin saw his three-game point streak come to an end in Thursday's loss to the Jets, but he has still been a huge disappointment on the season. The 30-year-old has attempted just 16 shots in 13 games and has yet to find the back of the net. His status for Sunday's game against the Sharks is uncertain at this time.

Canes' Semin Back In Lineup Tuesday

News: After sitting out as a healthy scratch for the previous two games, Alexander Semin is back in the lineup for Tuesday's matchup against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: "I'd like to see [Alexander Semin] work, work real hard, work similar to what our twelve forwards who have been in the lineup the last two games have worked," coach Bill Peters said. "I thought our work ethic has been very good and I think it's contagious, so I'd like to see him compete at the level we're at and play at the pace the league is at." Hopefully the benching is enough to light a fire under Semin and restore some of his fantasy value that has deteriorated so far this season. Semin is once again expected to skate on the Canes' top line alongside Eric Staal and Jiri Tlusty.

Canes' Semin Remains On Track To Be Scratched

News: Alexander Semin remains on track to be a healthy scratch for Saturday's game against the Coyotes.
Analysis: After the players expected to play Saturday left the ice during morning skate, Alexander Semin remained to take part in extra work, seemingly confirming that he'll spend Saturday's game in the press box. Semin probably won't become a routine healthy scratch for the Hurricanes, but it's evident that the team is disappointed in his lack of offensive production. He's contributed only two points (no goals) and 12 shots on goal over eight games.

Canes' Semin Likely To Be Scratched Saturday

News: Alexander Semin is expected to be a healthy scratch Saturday against the Coyotes.
Analysis: Like many of his teammates, Alexander Semin has been deplorable this season offensively, contributing only two points, 12 shot attempts and a minus-7 rating over his eight contests. With both Nathan Gerbe (lower body) and Patrick Dwyer (lower body) expected to return to action Saturday following lengthy absences, coach Bill Peters plans to drop Semin from the lineup to clear up room. The move to the press box shouldn't be a permanent one for Semin, who remains one of the Hurricanes' top talents, his early struggles notwithstanding.

Canes' Semin Struggling To Add Offense

News: Alexander Semin was held off the scoresheet for the fifth consecutive game during Friday's 6-3 loss to the Oilers. He registered just a single shot on goal in 17:13 of ice time.
Analysis: Alexander Semin has just two assists in seven games and looks utterly disinterested most nights. Or maybe he's just lost without linemate Eric Staal, who has missed the past five games with an upper-body injury. Either way, it's awfully hard to recommend Semin for fantasy purposes these days, given both his own struggles and those of the Hurricanes in general. You won't get much in a trade for him right now, so stash him on your fantasy bench and hope things somehow turn around for him.

Semin Gathers Two Helpers For 'Canes

News: Alexander Semin picked up two assists in Saturday's 4-3 defeat to the Islanders.
Analysis: Both of Alexander Semin's helpers came via the power play and were of the secondary variety. The veteran winger ended training camp at full health following offseason wrist surgery, but it seems highly unlikely that he'll ever return to the 70-point production he achieved three times during his prime years with Washington.

Hurricanes' Semin Returns To Pregame Skate

News: Alexander Semin (undisclosed) was present at the Hurricanes' pregame skate and looks like he'll play in Friday's exhibition against the Sabres, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: There was some concern Alexander Semin may have aggravated his surgically repaired wrist after he was removed early from Thursday's practice, but apparently there's nothing to worry about here. He's set to play on the first line with Jiri Tlusty and Eric Staal on Friday.

Hurricanes' Semin Leaves Practice Early

News: Alexander Semin left Thursday's practice early with an undisclosed ailment, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Coach Bill Peters declined to provide an update of Alexander Semin's condition after the practice, but at the very least, look for the Hurricanes to sit him out of Friday's preseason game against the Sabres. Semin was already returning from offseason wrist surgery, and in light of this latest injury and his downturn in production last season, it's tough to imagine him justifying his auction price or average draft position.

Canes' Semin To Miss Second Preseason Game

News: Alexander Semin will be held out of the Canes' second preseason game Tuesday against the Sabres, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin had offseason surgery on his wrist, and the move to limit his preseason game action by new coach Bill Peters is reportedly just a cautionary move. So far, there has been no word of Semin re-injuring his wrist in training camp, so we fully expect him to start the regular season on schedule at this point.

Hurricanes' Semin To Be Ready For Training Camp

News: GM Ron Francis has indicated that he expects Alexander Semin (wrist) will be ready to go for training camp, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: There was speculation about a month ago that Alexander Semin hit a wall in his recovery from offseason wrist surgery, but the winger has apparently experienced no lingering issues to this point. After signing a five-year, $35 million extension prior to last season, Semin's 22 goals and 20 assists in 65 games qualified as a disappointment. He'll probably need to get back to producing around 60 points per season in order to justify the Hurricanes' huge financial outlay.

Canes' Semin (Wrist Surgery): Slow Recovery

News: Alexander Semin's recovery from wrist surgery has been slower than expected and he is returning to the U.S. to complete his rehabilitation, reports Dmitry Chesnokov.
Analysis: The Canes had hoped Alexander Semin would be ready for camp, but it's not clear if this slow recovery will keep him out when camp opens in mid-September. He's entering year two of a five-year, $35 million deal with the Canes, who are counting on him to be a key cog in their machine this season.
