Flames Shut Down Wideman For Season

News: Dennis Wideman (upper body) has been shut down for the rest of the season, Wes Gilbertson of the Calgary Sun reports.
Analysis: With the Flames not playing for anything meaningful in the season's final week, there was no need to return Dennis Wideman to action when he's not yet 100 percent healthy. He finishes the 2013-14 campaign with 21 points and a minus-15 rating over 46 games.

Flames' Wideman Unlikely To Return This Season

News: Coach Bob Hartley said Dennis Wideman's (upper body) rehab program has been shut down, making him unlikely to return this season.
Analysis: With the defenseman showing limited progress in his recovery after sustaining the upper-body injury in early March, the team decided that it would probably be in Dennis Wideman's best interest to pack it in for the season. In suiting up in just 46 games, Wideman's numbers look almost identical to his strike-shortened 2012-13 campaign. He finishes with 21 points and a minus-15 rating.

Flames' Wideman Out Friday

News: Dennis Wideman is out for Friday's game against the Stars.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman may be facing a long-term absence, so his Friday status comes as no surprise. With the Flames out of contention, it wouldn't be shocking if we don't see Wideman again this season.

Flames' Wideman Still Sidelined

News: Dennis Wideman (upper body) may be out long-term.
Analysis: We'll await further specifics, but this nugget suggests that Dennis Wideman -- who last played on March 5 -- will miss Wednesday's game against the Ducks, at a minimum.

Calgary's Wideman Out Monday

News: Dennis Wideman (upper body) will miss Monday's matchup with Los Angeles, according to the Calgary Herald.
Analysis: The defenseman' injury is still a bit of a mystery, but it will keep him out of the lineup another game. With Dennis Wideman one of the highest paid players in Calgary, the Flames certainly don't want to risk further injury amidst a lost season.

Flames' Wideman Out Through The Weekend

News: Dennis Wideman (upper body), who has already been ruled out for Friday's game against the Islanders, will not play Saturday against the Canucks either.
Analysis: It's not clear how long Dennis Wideman will be out, but he will take the weekend off after being injured in Wednesday's game. Consider Wideman questionable for the Flames' next game Monday.

Flames' Wideman Out Friday

News: Dennis Wideman (upper body) will not play Friday against the Islanders, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 reports.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman was injured in Wednesday's game against the Senators, and it appears the setback will cost him at least one contest. Consider Wideman questionable for the Flames' next game Saturday.

Flames' Wideman Likely Out Friday

News: With the Flames recalling defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon on Thursday, Dennis Wideman (upper body) is unlikely to play in Friday's game, Wes Gilbertson of the Edmonton Sun reports.
Analysis: Thursday night's transaction provides a strong hint that Dennis Wideman won't be available Friday, after suffering an upper-body injury in Wednesday's game.

Flames' Wideman Injured Wednesday

News: Dennis Wideman left Wednesday's game with an upper body injury and will be re-evaluated Thursday.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman is the workhorse on the Flames' back end, so Calgary is hoping the injury is minor. He has 21 points in 46 games.

Wideman Gives Flames Two-Point Night

News: Dennis Wideman had a goal, an assist, and four shots in Thursday's win over the Islanders.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman will enter the break playing some strong hockey. He's got two goals and three assists in his last five games.

Flames' Wideman Provides Two Points

News: Dennis Wideman notched two assists in a 4-1 win over the Sharks on Thursday.
Analysis: The pair of points put an end to a five-game scoreless streak. After getting off to a hot start this season with eight points in the first month, he has only nine points in his last two months. He's still a decent fantasy defenseman, with 17 points in 38 games, but isn't the stud he once was. Calgary has also shifted his role to a more defensive one.

Flames' Wideman Quiet In Loss

News: Dennis Wideman was held off the scoresheet and was minus-1 in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Predators.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman played 18:54 in the loss, which is a light night for him. He has struggled at times since returning from injury Jan. 3, notching two points, but carrying a minus-7 in seven games. Just about everyone in Calgary is pressing right now, and Wideman appears no different.

Flames' Wideman Expected Back Friday

News: Flames coach Bob Hartley expects Dennis Wideman (hand) to return to action Friday against the Lightning, Aaron Vickers of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman has increased his involvement in practice of late and appears poised to return to the ice about a week earlier than initially projected when he fractured his hand in late November. The blueliner had two goals and 10 assists in 24 games prior to suffering the injury.

Flames' Wideman Gets In Non-Contact Work

News: Dennis Wideman (hand) was wearing a non-contact jersey during Saturday's practice, Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun reports.
Analysis: The defenseman is still considered week-to-week with the hand injury, but the fact that he's now back on the ice with his teammates - albeit in a limited capacity - is a step in the right direction. He's missed a month with the injury thus far but could beat the initial six-to-eight week timetable initially established for him.

Flames' Upgrade Wideman As 'Week-To-Week'

News: The Flames are now calling Dennis Wideman's hand injury a week-to-week concern, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman was initially ruled out six-to-eight week after fracturing his hand in late-November, but it now looks like he might even beat the short end of that timetable. With 12 points in 24 games, Wideman had been an above-average scorer at the defenseman spot before sustaining the injury and should retain an integral role on the attack for the Flames upon returning to action.

Flames' Wideman Out 6-8 Weeks

News: Dennis Wideman has a fractured hand and will miss six to eight weeks, the Flames' official site reports. He was placed on injured reserve Thursday.
Analysis: The team didn't say when Dennis Wideman broke his hand, but it was presumably during Wednesday's loss to the Blackhawks. For a team already dealing with numerous injuries, losing Wideman - who is fifth on the team with 12 points (2 goals, 10 assists) - is a significant blow.

Flames' Wideman Adds Assist In Loss

News: Dennis Wideman registered an assist Thursday but the Flames fell to the Stars, 7-3.
Analysis: The Flames are in the midst of a five-game losing streak in which few of their players have been producing, and Dennis Wideman is no exception. His assist Thursday was his first point in five games, and with Calgary struggling so much defensively he hasn't had as many chances on offense. He is still a pretty good fantasy option all things considered, however.

Flames' Wideman Tallies Two Assists

News: Dennis Wideman had two assists Sunday against the Blackhawks. He was also a plus-2 and had three shots on net.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman has 10 points in 14 games this year, and he's notched six assists in his last five games. He plays a lot of minutes, and he is currently a plus-4. That may come down given his team, but the point total could remain beneficial.

Wideman Leads Flames Over Caps

News: Dennis Wideman carded two assists and finished the night plus-5 as Calgary rolled past Washington on Saturday, 5-2.
Analysis: The +/- rating isn't a typo; he was on the ice for all five Calgary tallies. He has seven points (1G, 6A) in 11 games and is out-producing a whole lot of forwards at this early point.

Flames' Wideman Tallies Assist In Loss

News: Dennis Wideman tallied an assist in Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Stars.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman is having a solid season with Calgary, logging a boatload of minutes and registering five points in 10 games. While teammate Mark Giordano has been the breakout fantasy blueliner in Calgary, a point every two games is a pretty good clip for a defenseman. Roll Wideman if you have him.

Flames' Wideman Scores First Of The Season

News: Dennis Wideman scored his first goal of the season and added an assist during the Flames' 3-2 win over the Devils on Friday.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman looks like he's starting to heat up with his third point in two games, but be cautious with how you use him in fantasy. His role this year will be to act more as a stay-at-home defenseman than one who pushes forth with the offense, so curb your expectations for him this season. He won't be a bad option, but he probably won't post as high a point total as you would like to see.

Calgary's Wideman Tallies Assist

News: Dennis Wideman tallied an assist in Wednesday's 3-2 win against Montreal.
Analysis: The assist was Dennis Wideman's first point of the season, which is more about his role in Calgary than Wideman playing poorly. Wideman is being counted on to play huge minutes and be more of a defensive stalwart than offensive threat, so until he starts racking up points, use him with caution.

Flames' Wideman Plays Huge Minutes Friday

News: Dennis Wideman failed to score a point in Friday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jackets, but he took four shots on net, blocked two shots and led the Flames with a game-high 28:57 of ice time.
Analysis: Whatever success Calgary scrapes together this season, Dennis Wideman's likely to play a big part of it as their top blueliner. He has yet to hit the scoresheet through two games, but if he keeps logging heavy minutes that will change soon enough.

Flames' Wideman Back In Business

News: Returning from a two-game absence, Dennis Wideman (finger) suited up Tuesday against the Preds, seeing 24:02 worth of ice time.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman, who took two shots Tuesday and was a minus-1, heads into the Flames' last two games with 22 points in 44 contests to date.

Flames' Wideman To Miss Tuesday's Game

News: Dennis Wideman (finger) will miss Tuesday's game against Nashville, the Calgary Herald reports.
Analysis: Dennis Wideman is a prized Calgary commodity, so it doesn't want to rush him back. This will let some of the Flames' youth movement get some ice time in.
