Wings' Franzen Expected Back Next Season

News: Red Wings GM Ken Holland said last week that Johan Franzen is showing improvement in his recovery from a concussion and is expected to be ready to go for training camp, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Johan Franzen's 2014-15 season came to an end Jan. 6 when he suffered the concussion, but the forward has been able to resume working out in preparation for the upcoming campaign. While he still has yet to receive full clearance from doctors to take contact, Franzen still has multiple months before training camp starts to put his post-concussion symptoms behind him. The 35-year-old has dealt with multiple concussions during his 10 seasons with the Red Wings, and while his latest doesn't appear to be career-ending, his troubling history with head injuries with make him more of a risk than most players to stay healthy in 2015-16.

Wings' Franzen Likely Out For Playoffs

News: Johan Franzen (concussion) acknowledged Wednesday that he isn't expecting to return to the lineup during the playoffs, Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Johan Franzen hasn't played since suffering a concussion Jan. 6, and still appears to be experiencing some symptoms of the head injury. The forward has dealt with multiple concussions throughout his career, so the Red Wings figure to proceed cautiously with him by giving him the full summer off to recuperate. Franzen expects to be ready for the start of training camp.

Wings' Franzen (Concussion) Skates Briefly

News: Johan Franzen (concussion) skated for a little bit Friday but left the ice before practice began, Ansar Khan of MLive reports.
Analysis: Johan Franzen is expected to return before the regular season ends, and him actually skating again is a step in the right direction. He's still at least a few weeks away, however.

Red Wings' Franzen Expected To Return This Season

News: GM Ken Holland said Johan Franzen (concussion) is expected to return before the regular season ends, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Holland indicated the forward is beginning to make progress in his recovery, but there hasn't been any tangible evidence of that, as he has yet to receive clearance to skate. He remains without a definitive timetable for a return.

Still No Timetable For Red Wings' Franzen

News: Johan Franzen (concussion) is still dealing with concussion symptoms and doesn't have a timetable to return, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Johan Franzen has now missed over a month of action with his latest concussion, and it doesn't appear that he's closing in on a return. He missed about two months last season with a concussion, and given that he hasn't been cleared for off-ice workouts due to lingering headaches, it's possible this will turn into an even lengthier absence.

Red Wings' Franzen Still Not Practicing

News: Johan Franzen (concussion) didn't practice Monday, and he still doesn't have a timetable to return, The Detroit News reports.

Red Wings' Franzen (Upper Body) Not Skating Yet

News: Johan Franzen (upper body) has been limited to off-ice workouts since landing on injured reserve, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Johan Franzen hasn't played since Jan. 6, when he suffered the injury on a hit by the Oilers' Rob Klinkhammer. It sounds like his injury might be concussion-related, as GM Ken Holland noted the forward has occasionally been experiencing headaches in recent days. Holland said Franzen shouldn't be deemed close to returning until he starts practicing with the team for multiple days in a row, but there's no telling when that might occur.

Wings Place Franzen (Upper Body) On IR

News: Johan Franzen (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Thursday, MLive.com's Brendan Savage reports.
Analysis: Johan Franzen suffered the upper-body injury in Tuesday's win over the Oilers and was a late scratch for Wednesday's tilt with the Flames. The Red Wings haven't provided much word on the nature or severity of his injury, but the IR placement will result in him missing at least the team's next two games. Teemu Pulkkinen was recalled from AHL Grand Rapids in a corresponding move.

Wings' Franzen Misses Wednesday's Game

News: Johan Franzen missed Wednesday's game against Calgary with an upper-body injury, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: No word on the severity of his injury yet, so consider him day to day for now. Johan Franzen has 22 points in 33 games on the season.

Red Wings' Franzen Dishes Out Two Wednesday

News: Johan Franzen tallied two assists and three shots on goal in Wednesday's win over the Devils.
Analysis: The slate has been fairly dry of late for Johan Franzen, who has accumulated four points over his last nine games. He made the most of his 13:37 of ice time Wednesday, but his standing on the Red Wings' third line may not improve his chances of piling up points at a steady clip anytime soon.

Red Wings' Franzen Will Play Friday

News: Johan Franzen (illness) has been cleared to play Friday against the Islanders, Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily reports.
Analysis: After skipping Tuesday's game with the illness, Johan Franzen returned to the ice for Thursday's practice and looked to be feeling significantly better. The forward said he's been battling an off-and-on stomach flu for the past three weeks, but passed all tests for the mumps conducted by the team's medical staff. The illness has surely impacted his play of late, as he's gone 12 games without a goal after potting six in his first 13 contests. Now that he's seemingly recharged, Franzen will likely form a trio with Riley Sheahan and Tomas Jurco on Friday.

Red Wings' Franzen Expected To Play Friday

News: Johan Franzen (illness) is expected to play Friday against the Islanders, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: It doesn't sound like Johan Franzen has experienced any symptoms related to the mumps virus that has been making its way around the league, so with a couple more days to recuperate, he should be ready to play. His availability for Friday's game should be confirmed after the Red Wings hold their morning skate that day.

Red Wings' Franzen Out With Illness Tuesday

News: Johan Franzen will not play Tuesday due to an illness, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: It's not clear what type of sickness Johan Franzen is dealing with, but it will prevent him from taking the ice Tuesday night, as he hasn't been able to skate the past two days. Consider him questionable for Detroit's next game Friday while team doctors conduct tests to determine if Franzen might have contracted the mumps virus that has been spreading around the league.

Wings' Franzen Picks Up Assist Sunday

News: Johan Franzen chipped in with an assist, three shots on goal and four penalty minutes in Sunday's victory over the Red Wings.
Analysis: Johan Franzen hasn't been able to find twine since Nov. 20, spanning nine games, but it hasn't been for a dramatic lack in shot attempts. The bad puck luck figures to end for him eventually, and he's at least been able to stay reasonably productive during the goal drought by setting up others. He's notched an assist in five of his last six games to bring his point total up to 18 for the season.

Wings' Franzen Notches Assist

News: Johan Franzen added an assist to a 5-0 win over Columbus on Tuesday.
Analysis: Johan Franzen just keeps chugging along with his point-a-game average, as he now has five goals and seven assists in 12 games. When he's been healthy, he's been stellar this season.

Wings' Franzen Gets Point In Fourth Straight

News: Johan Franzen scored a goal and added an assist in Sunday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Lightning.
Analysis: The two point effort ran his streak to four in a row with at least one point, and was his second straight with a goal. He's off to a great start with 10 points in nine games, and appears to just be heating up.

Red Wings' Franzen: Three-Game Point Streak

News: Johan Franzen potted the game-winning goal in Friday's 4-2 victory over the Devils.
Analysis: After being held off the scoresheet in his return from injured reserve last Sunday, Johan Franzen has now provided a point in each of his last three games. If health permits, the 34-year-old could make a run at a 50-point season.

Detroit's Franzen Returns To Lineup

News: Johan Franzen had four shots on goal in 16 minutes of action Sunday in a 3-2 shootout loss to Buffalo.
Analysis: It's going to take Johan Franzen a couple games to get back into the swing of things, but he did contribute offensively despite being held off the scoresheet. It shouldn't be too long before Franzen finds the back of the net again.

Wings Activate Franzen

News: The Red Wings no longer list Johan Franzen (groin) as being on injured reserve.
Analysis: Johan Franzen's activation means that he has been cleared to play and, as expected, will be in the lineup Sunday against the Sabres. The veteran winger started out the season red-hot with two goals and three assists through the first four games and should be immediately reinserted into fantasy lineups.

News: Johan Franzen (groin) expects to be back in the lineup for Sunday's game, MLive's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Johan Franzen started the season on fire with five points in four games, but may need a game or two to get back up to speed. Play him at your own risk.

Wings' Franzen (Groin) Nearing Return

News: Johan Franzen (groin) hasn't ruled out returning for Friday's game, but said Sunday's game in Buffalo is a more realistic goal, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Johan Franzen practiced Tuesday for the first time since Oct. 17 and also took part in the team's morning skate Wednesday. The 34-year-old is coming off a 41-point season over 54 games, and will look to continue his hot start to the season (five points in four game) when he finally returns to the ice.

Return Likely Pushed Back For Wings' Franzen

News: Johan Franzen said he was still experiencing tightness in his groin during Tuesday's practice and isn't confident he'll return to game action over the weekend, Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily reports.
Analysis: Johan Franzen took part in practice Tuesday for the first time since Oct. 17 and was given the go-ahead to participate in Wednesday's morning skate in Washington, but it doesn't sound like he'll be activated from injured reserve in the next couple of days, as coach Mike Babcock had initially anticipated. Instead, the forward will attempt to steadily increase his activity level in subsequent practices to the point where the groin injury is no longer bothersome, with the hope of playing in a game at some point next week.

Red Wings' Franzen Practices Tuesday

News: Johan Franzen (groin) participated in Tuesday's practice, Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily reports.
Analysis: Johan Franzen did not get in a full session Tuesday, as he left the ice when the Red Wings took part in competitive drills. However, he did skate hard while doing individual work, and appeared to be moving well. Franzen will miss one more game and most likely a few additional ones, but he has a chance to return to action as soon as Friday.

Wings' Franzen Misses Practice Due To Injury

News: Johan Franzen (groin) is still not skating in practice for the Red Wings, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Although Johan Franzen's injury shouldn't be a long-term one, he has missed Detroit's past four games and isn't expected to return until Oct. 31. The 34-year-old winger was off to a hot start this season, scoring two goals and three assists in four games played.

Red Wings' Franzen To Miss Next Two Games

News: Johan Franzen (groin) won't return from injured reserve when eligible Saturday, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: It seems Johan Franzen's groin injury is still a short-term concern, but GM Ken Holland declined to provide an update on how much improvement the forward has noticed with the injury. Since he has yet to take the ice since pregame warmups last weekend, the Red Wings decided to rule Franzen out of their two-game road trip beginning Saturday. He'll aim to work out on his own back in Detroit, with a possible return to action no sooner than Oct. 31 against the Kings.
