Caps' Ovechkin Breaks Power-Play Slump

News: Alex Ovechkin scored his first power-play goal since Nov. 26 in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers. He went minus-1 in the game, but put six shots on goal and laid out eight hits.
Analysis: Despite heavy power-play time, this season has been anything but a repeat of last year, when Ovi set a career high with 24 power-play goals. He has just seven in 34 games this season, a far shorter pace. But the bright side of that has been that he hasn't been contending for the league's worst plus-minus, as Alex Ovechkin owns a neat plus-5 for the season. But with just 28 points in 34 games, he's on the second-worst scoring pace of his career.

Caps' Ovechkin Starting To Shine

News: Alex Ovechkin has two goals, two assists and 25 shots over the Capitals' last three games.
Analysis: He's also yielded a plus-4 rating during that span, bringing him back on to the positive side of that category for the season. He endured the longest scoring drought of his career in October as he adjusted to new coach Barry Trotz's system, but it looks like he's now settled in as the premium fantasy asset everyone expected.

Caps' Ovechkin Snaps Slump With Two Goals

News: Alex Ovechkin ended a four-game scoreless slump with a pair of goals -- one into an empty net -- Tuesday in a 5-3 win over Tampa.
Analysis: Hey, his fantasy owners will take the empty-netter happily, as Ovi has been a bit of a disappointment so far this year. Sure, 23 points in 27 games are respectable in general, but not for a guy who's put up more than a point per game in eight of his nine seasons. His fantasy owners will be hoping to see the Russian superstar build on this performance.

Caps' Ovechkin Scores Twice In Loss

News: Alex Ovechkin recorded two more goals in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin now ranks sixth in the league with 11 goals, and has 20 points in 21 games to date. He's also only a minus-1 so far, showing an increase in defensive responsibility under new head coach Barry Trotz.

Caps' Ovechkin Set To Play Wednesday

News: Alex Ovechkin (upper body) confirmed after the Capitals' morning skate that he is "good to go" for Wednesday's game against the Islanders.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin had been forced out of Tuesday's practice early with what was labeled as an "upper-body tweak," but the Capitals cleared him for a return after he participated fully at morning skate. The winger doesn't seem at risk of seeing a reduction in ice time Wednesday, so he can probably safely be viewed as a high-end fantasy commodity like usual.

Caps' Ovechkin (upper body) Leaves Practice Early

News: Alex Ovechkin left practice early with what is being described as an "upper-body tweak" and is questionable for Wednesday's game against the Islanders, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin will make the trip to New York and head coach Barry Trotz expects the reigning Richard Trophy winner to play, but given how important Ovechkin is to the Capitals, expect them to take every precaution. An ailment might explain Ovechkin's recent inconsistency, as he has gone without a point in four of his last five games. Even at less than full health, Ovechkin is a multi-category stud who needs to be played whenever he is in the lineup, so keep an eye on his availability prior to Wednesday night.

Caps' Ovechkin Ends Mini Slump

News: Alex Ovechkin snapped a three-game scoring drought Thursday with a goal, an assist and a plus-2 in a 3-2 victory over Colorado.
Analysis: Both Ovi and his center, Nicklas Backstrom, got three-game monkeys off their backs Thursday. Ovi remains well off his usual pace, with a low shooting percentage by his standards (.106) one of the biggest culprits. He's about due to start one of his characteristic hot streaks; maybe Thursday was the first game of it.

Caps' Ovechkin Scores Twice In Win

News: Alex Ovechkin scored a power-play goal and an even-strength goal in Tuesday's win over the Jackets.
Analysis: Ah, there's the ol' goal-scoring magic. Alex Ovechkin had scored just a single goal over the prior nine games, but he does have 10 points over his last six thanks to a bevy of assists.

Ovechkin Takes Over Caps' Scoring Record

News: Alex Ovechkin handed out a pair of assists in Tuesday's overtime loss to the Flames, untying himself with Peter Bondra for the title of all-team leading scorer for the Capitals.
Analysis: Ovi now has 827 points to show for his career -- all with Washington -- and he's done it in just 691 games. For comparison, Bondra needed 961 games to collect his 825 points as a Capital. Alex Ovechkin's racked up seven points in the last three games, but has actually been in a bit of a goal-scoring drought lately, as he's found the net just a single time in his last seven contests despite firing 27 shots on goal in that span.

Caps' Ovechkin Picks Up Four Points

News: Alex Ovechkin factored in on four of the team's five goals in Sunday's loss to the Coyotes, finding the back of the net once and assisting on three others.
Analysis: After going a career-high five consecutive games without a point, Alex Ovechkin has gotten back on the board in his last two and broke out in a big way on Sunday. He added two points on the power play, and ripped off seven shots in the loss, giving him 20 shots on goal in the last three games. The points will continue to come.

Caps' Ovie Snaps Drought With Assist

News: Alex Ovechkin scored his first point -- an assist -- in five games in Saturday's loss to Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Seriously -- he's just fine, but some owners are panicking after the longest point drought in his NHL career. We're not. Use him well.

Caps' Ovechkin In Midst Of Scoring Drought

News: Alex Ovechkin was held without a point for the fifth straight game in Wednesday's loss to the Red Wings.
Analysis: It's the longest stretch without a point in Alex Ovechkin's 10-year NHL career. Before busting out for seven shots on goal against the Red Wings, Ovechkin had combined for seven attempts total over his previous four games. He's too talented for his offense to remain dormant much longer, so the best course of action for fantasy owners is to maintain patience.

Caps' Ovechkin Nets Two Goals, Assist In Loss

News: Alex Ovechkin had two goals, an assist, and eight shots in Washington's 6-5 shootout loss to San Jose.
Analysis: The reigning Rocket Richard Trophy winner is picking up where he left off last season, racking up four goals in his first three games of 2014-15. Tied for third in the league in goals and fourth in the league for shots, Alex Ovechkin is a multi-category monster that looks to be in line for another great fantasy season.

Ovie Snipes Two In Caps' Win

News: Alex Ovechkin scored his first two goals of the season in Saturday's 4-0 win over Boston.
Analysis: The first came on a patented Ovie one-timer from the left circle while on the power play; the second was a blistering snipe off a nice feed from Nicklas Backstrom. He also laid three hits and fired seven shots. He delivers a classic goals/hits/shots trifecta every season and this one should be no different.

Caps' Ovechkin Turns In Productive Opener

News: Though he didn't tally a goal or assist in Thursday's season-opening loss to the Canadiens, Alex Ovechkin turned in an active outing. He supplied four shots on goal and six hits in the shootout defeat.
Analysis: The Capitals will look to turn Alex Ovechkin into more of a two-way threat under defensive-minded coach Barry Trotz, but the 29-year-old's goal-scoring ability is what will always drive his fantasy value. He didn't notice much of a dropoff in his scoring during the preseason, and it should be just a matter of time before he starts delivering point-per-game production.

Caps' Ovechkin Gets Two Goals In Friday's Win

News: Alex Ovechkin scored two power-play goals during the Capitals' 5-4 win over the Bruins on Friday.
Analysis: There have been whispers that Alex Ovechkin's goal-scoring may regress a bit under new coach Barry Trotz, and although his even-strength production may take a slight decline, he's shown in preseason action that he's still the NHL's most lethal goal scoring threat on the man advantage. Draft Ovechkin with confidence in all formats, especially if he gets dual-position eligibility since he's back to his old stomping grounds on the LW.

Caps' Coach Leaning Toward Ovechkin At LW

News: Head coach Barry Trotz is "leaning towards" having Alex Ovechkin start the season at his former position of left wing, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Trotz had indicated previously during the summer that he would keep Alex Ovechkin at right wing to start the season, but Prewitt speculates something may have changed over the summer or that Trotz, like his predecessor, plans to move Ovechkin between both wings. The flexibility should help Ovechkin keep his place as one of the league's top goal scorers, and this should do nothing to adversely affect his fantasy appeal.

Caps' Ovechkin In Minor Car Accident

News: Alex Ovechkin was involved in a minor car accident in Russia on Monday, Russian Machine Never Breaks reports.
Analysis: It was a minor incident, so no worries -- Ovi didn't aggravate his knee injury or suffer any new ones. The NHL's reigning goal-scoring king is healthy and seems ready to defend his title under new head coach Barry Trotz.

Ex-Predator Dismisses Talk Of Ovechkin, Trotz Rift

News: Alexander Radulov, who had a roller coaster relationship with current Capitals head coach Barry Trotz praised his former bench boss, Joe Yerdon of NBC Sports reports.
Analysis: The statement is a bit of a surprise considering Radulov's rocky conclusion to his NHL career when he served under Barry Trotz in Nashville. While it's just one man's opinion, the fact that an enigmatic, offensive wizard like Radulov respects Trotz bodes well for Alex Ovechkin's transition to the former Predators coach, as Ovechkin is committed to doing what it takes to bring a Stanley Cup to DC. Although there may be some growing pains, the chances that Ovechkin becomes a moody, disgruntled, and ineffective player should decline with this revelation. A perennial Rocket Richard candidate and fantasy stud, this insight should give you all the more reason not to be scared by Trotz's arrival in DC when it comes to taking Ovechkin in your fantasy league.

Caps Expect Ovechkin To Be Healthy For Camp

News: The Washington Capitals released a statement updating Alex Ovechkin's condition and announced they are confident that Ovechkin "will be completely healthy prior to the start of training camp," J.J. Reagan of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: The release announces Alex Ovechkin suffered a "right-leg" injury during a May 18th contest at the IIHF World Championships in Belarus during which Ovechkin appeared to injure his right knee during a mid-ice collision. Ovechkin missed a game, but would later return in the medal round to help lead Russia to a Gold Medal performance. The report seems to confirm that the defending Rocket Richard Trophy-winner has emerged from the annual tournament relatively unscathed and should be in normal condition for the start of the 2014-2015 NHL season. Unless an unexpected development occurs, he should have no health concerns to weigh down his draft status in fantasy leagues.

Caps' Ovechkin Returns To Action For Russia

News: Alex Ovechkin (knee) returned to the ice for Russia in their victory Thursday against France in the quarterfinals of the 2014 IIHF World Championship, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: The Russian captain only saw 12 minutes of ice time and recorded no shots on goal, but more than anything, it was a relief for the Capitals to see their franchise player skating again after suffering what looked to be a devastating knee injury Sunday. Alex Ovechkin was forced to miss only one contest for Russia, and should see his playing time rise as any lingering soreness he's still experiencing dies down.

Caps' Ovechkin Missing Time At Worlds

News: Alex Ovechkin (knee) will not play in Team Russia's final group game against Belarus, TSN reports.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin will be held out of the lineup with a sore knee after suffering a devastating collision with Marcus Kink during Russia's previous game against Germany. The Richard Trophy winner could return to the lineup for the elimination round that begins this week.

Caps' Ovechkin Avoids Significant Damage

News: Alex Ovechkin's knee injury is not serious, the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin underwent some tests on his injured knee Sunday, and an MRI revealed no tears or significant damage. The star winger is expected to miss Russia's final preliminary game Tuesday, but could return to action later in the tournament, and he's expected to be fully recovered in time for the NHL season.

Caps' Ovechkin Suffers Knee Injury At Worlds

News: Alex Ovechkin suffered an apparent left knee injury while playing for Russia in the IIHF World Championships, Stephen Whyno of the Canadian Press reports.
Analysis: The Russian team probably won't update Alex Ovechkin's injury until after the team completes their game against Germany, but the captain was writhing in pain after taking a hit to the knee and wasn't able to put any weight on it while exiting the ice. The Capitals will hold their breath while they await news on their 51-goal scorer.

Injury For Caps' Ovechkin 'Better Than Expected'

News: Alex Ovechkin was able to walk on his own without the aid of crutches after leaving the Russian team's game against Germany in the IIHF World Championships on Sunday, Slava Malamud of Sport-Express.ru reports. The Russian team doctor said that Ovechkin was feeling "better than expected."
Analysis: It certainly seems to be good news for Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals, who appeared to be fearing the worst after their star looked was unable to put any weight on his left knee following a hit. Ovechkin will remain with the Russian team in Minsk and await a more thorough diagnosis, but at the very least, it looks like he could miss a few games during the World Championships. It's certainly not an ideal scenario, but probably somewhat comforting news for the Capitals for the time being.
