Caps' Ovechkin Scores In Loss

News: Alex Ovechkin tallied a goal in Wednesday's 2-1 OT loss to the Rangers.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin was the recipient of a beautiful pass from Marcus Johansson midway through the first period, and buried a shot top shelf to open the scoring. That was all the Caps could muster, though, so Ovechkin will finish the postseason with five goals and four assists in 14 games.

Caps' Ovechkin On Four-Game Scoring Skid

News: Alex Ovechkin put six shots on goal in Sunday's Game 6 loss to the Rangers, but failed to record a point for the fourth consecutive game of the series.
Analysis: After Alex Ovechkin potted a pair of goals to go along with an assist in the series' first two games, the Rangers have done a better job of containing the star winger, overcoming a 3-1 series deficit in the process. Ovechkin hasn't been invisible on the ice the last few contests -- just ask Rangers blueliner Ryan McDonagh, who was the recipient of a huge hit from Ovechkin in Game 5 -- but it's clear the Capitals need their best player to get back on the score sheet in Game 7 in order to advance to the conference finals. For his part, Ovechkin is already guaranteeing a win Wednesday night in Madison Square Garden, in what will represent the biggest game of his career to date.

Caps Ovechkin Nets Spectacular Goal

News: Alex Ovechkin scored a spectacular goal in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Rangers. He tried to split defensemen Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh, and fell as he went through, but he managed to get a shot off. It was perfectly placed and went over Henrik Lundqvist's right shoulder into the top corner of the net.
Analysis: It's his fourth goal of the playoffs in nine games and his 69th, including 35 goals, in 67 career postseason games. Remarkably, he has morphed into a true team player under Barry Trotz and that makes the Caps more dangerous than they've ever been. The series is now tied at ones.

Ovechkin Lifts Caps To Game 1 Win Against Rangers

News: Alex Ovechkin scored the game's opening goal on a power play and fed Joel Ward for the game-winner in the waning seconds Thursday in Game 1 of the playoffs' second round against the Rangers.
Analysis: Typically sparkling work for Alex Ovechkin, who shocked no one by leading all skaters with six shots on goal. After an up-and-down series against the Isles, he's looking for more consistent results against the Rangers this time around; two years ago in the playoffs, Ovi collected points in the first two games against the Blueshirts (both wins), then was held off the scoresheet for the next five as New York came back for a seven-game series win.

Ovechkin's Two Points Lead Caps To Game 4 Win

News: Alex Ovechkin scored the game's first goal and assisted on Nicklas Backstrom's game-winner Tuesday in Game 4 against the Islanders.
Analysis: After a cold first three games -- just one goal and no assists -- Ovi finally had his playoff breakout, and just in time, as the Caps badly needed to win this one to tie the series. Fantasy owners have to be extra happy about this one, as he picked up a couple PIM and a plus-1 rating as well.

Caps' Ovechkin Claims Rocket Richard Trophy

News: Alex Ovechkin picked up his 53rd goal of the season in Saturday's finale against the Rangers.
Analysis: The 53 tallies gave Alex Ovechkin his highest total since 2008-09 and earned him the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for the third straight season and fifth time in his career. While the Hart Trophy may prove to be unattainable given the way that Montreal's Carey Price played this season, Ovechkin erased any doubt that he was entering a decline phase after submitting a down year in 2013-14, at least relative to his lofty standards. At 29 years old, he's still firmly in his prime.

Caps' Ovechkin Pots Two More

News: Alex Ovechkin scored a pair of power-play goals Thursday against the Canadiens, marking his third consecutive multi-point effort.
Analysis: A brief pre-50-goals slump has been emphatically erased by the Russian superstar, who's found twine 11 more times than anyone else in the league. He's now tied his rookie-season goal total of 52, and though he won't match his astounding career-high 65, Alex Ovechkin has been perhaps the most valuable player in the league this year.

Caps' Ovechkin Hits 50 Goals

News: Alex Ovechkin scored his 50th goal of the season, assisted on another and went plus-2 in Tuesday's victory over Carolina.
Analysis: This is now the second straight year and the sixth time overall that Ovi's hit the 50-goal mark, and it's looking like he'll clear 80 points for the first time since 2010-11, too. After a three-game absence from the scoresheet, the superstar winger's bounced back with four points in two games as he and the Caps race toward the playoffs.

Caps' Ovechkin Pots Two More In Win

News: Alex Ovechkin netted two goals in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Rangers.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin had actually gone three straight contests off the scoresheet -- one of his longest stretches of the season -- but he's now just one goal away from the sixth 50-goal season of his career. He holds a commanding nine goal lead on the next best in the league, and is back up to a point-per-game pace on the season.

Ovechkin Helps Caps Solve Wild's Dubnyk

News: Alex Ovechkin scored his 46th and 47th goals Thursday, keying a 3-2 win over the Wild.
Analysis: Not a lot of skaters have been able to solve Devan Dubnyk since he came over to Minnesota, but then again, not a lot of goalies have been able to stop Alex Ovechkin consistently ... ever. After two games off the scoresheet -- particularly Monday's frustrating nine-shot effort against Buffalo -- Ovi got back to normal with his 12th multi-goal game of the year.

Caps' Ovechkin Tallies 45th Of Season

News: Alex Ovechkin recorded his team's lone goal in Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Rangers.
Analysis: Ovie now has eight points in his last four games, and continues to lead the NHL with 45 goals on the year. He's having a much better year defensively under new head coach Barry Trotz as well, and is currently a plus-10 this season after finishing 2013-14 as a minus-35.

Alexander The Gr8 Back In Saddle With Two Points

News: Alex Ovechkin (lower body) picked up right where he left off two games ago, picking up a goal and an assist in a win over the Sabres. He had missed one game because of injury.
Analysis: So, that makes seven points, including five goals, in his last three games. And his 69 points, including 44 goals, both lead their respective categories on the NHL's leader boards. Who said this guy couldn't change his game to fit Barry Trotz's style AND still put up points? #nhlstud

Ovechkin (Lower-Body) To Return Saturday

News: Alex Ovechkin will be in the lineup when the Capitals face the Sabres on Saturday evening, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin took the pre-game warmup alongside Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson, his linemates from recent games, and will return to the lineup following a one-game absence. It's believed that he first sustained the lower-body injury during Tuesday's win in Columbus. Start him with confidence -- even a banged up Ovechkin should still have a decent night against the lowly Sabres.

Caps' Ovechkin (Lower Body) Out For Warmups

News: Alex Ovechkin (lower body) participated in pregame warmups prior to Saturday's game against the Sabres, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: The winger took part in morning skate and said that he's in less pain Saturday than he has been in days past. His presence on the ice for warmups is certainly an encouraging sign, but the team has yet to hand down official word ruling him in or out. A definitive update should be available in short order.

Caps' Ovechkin A Game-Time Decision For Saturday

News: Alex Ovechkin will be a game-time decision when the Capitals host the Sabres on Saturday, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin participated fully in Saturday's morning skate and says he is "feeling less pain" than he did a few days earlier, but a final call on his status will be made just prior to the game. It's a tough situation for fantasy owners, as even a slightly banged up Ovechkin is still a top-notch fantasy contributor on most nights, particularly against a bottom-feeding Sabres team that played the night before. Have a backup plan in place, but monitor his status in the minutes leading up to the 7:00 ET puck drop.

Ovechkin (Lower Body) Questionable For Saturday

News: Head coach Barry Trotz indicated that Alex Ovechkin (lower body) is questionable for Saturday night's game against Buffalo, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin apparently suffered the still unknown injury during Tuesday's win over Columbus, and missed Thursday's contest against Minnesota after being unable to take pregame warmups. With Saturday's contest against Buffalo being the last before a three-game break (prior to a crucial showdown with the division-leading New York Rangers), it wouldn't be surprising to see the Rocket Richard frontrunner get another game off as the Capitals look to close the gap on their divisional rivals down the stretch. Keep an eye on the situation, but plan accordingly if "Gr8" is unable to go.

Caps' Ovechkin Practices Briefly Friday

News: Alex Ovechkin (lower body) took the ice for Friday's practice, but he did not stick around for long, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin missed Thursday's game against the Wild, and he's seemingly in danger of missing Saturday's game against the Sabres. The Capitals are still calling Ovechkin day-to-day, so it wouldn't be surprising to see his availability come down to another game-time decision.

Caps' Ovechkin Ruled Out Thursday

News: Alex Ovechkin (lower body) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Wild.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin was considered a game-time decision heading into the contest, but the lower-body injury prevented him from taking warmups and will result in him sitting for the first time this season. After being stuck with a minus-39 rating a season earlier, Ovechkin has been an MVP-caliber player under coach Barry Trotz, tallying a league-leading 43 goals while chipping in 24 assists over 65 games. He's considered day-to-day, with his next chance to play coming Saturday against the Sabres.

Caps' Ovechkin Iffy For Thursday

News: Alex Ovechkin (lower body) is a game-time decision for Thursday's game against the Wild, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.

Caps' Ovechkin Pouring It On

News: Alex Ovechkin scored a pair of goals on eight shots -- his second consecutive two-goal game -- in Tuesday's win over Columbus.
Analysis: That's five points in the last two contests for Ovi, boosting his NHL-leading goal total to 43 and his point total to 67 in 65 games. To boot, he's lifted his rating to plus-12, and he's on pace to set a new career high in hits. This is shaping up to be his second consecutive 50-goal campaign and the sixth of his career.

Ovechkin Named "Third-Star" of February

News: Alex Ovechkin was given "Third-Star" honors for the month of February, according to a team press release.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin led the league in goals (10), points (17), power-play goals (5) and shots on goal (68) during 14 games last month. He's been a bit quieter of late with only a goal and a minus-3 rating in his last four games, but he's still a dominant force in all fantasy formats.

Caps' Ovechkin Grabs Three Points In Win

News: Alex Ovechkin collected two goals and an assist in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: The three points temporarily bring Alex Ovechkin into a first place tie for most in the league with 65. The 29-year-old is putting up another terrific campaign this season and is showing no signs of letting up as he's back over the point-per-game pace.

News: Alex Ovechkin scored a goal and picked up a power-play assist Thursday in a 5-1 rout of the Jets.
Analysis: Over the course of what's now a six-game point streak, Ovi has collected six goals and five assists. That's what's called sizzling hot. The star winger's been nigh-unstoppable this year, and there's no reason to think that'll change anytime soon.

Caps' Ovechkin Keeps Rolling

News: Alex Ovechkin potted his 37th goal and tacked on an assist -- both on the power play -- Tuesday in a win over the Penguins.
Analysis: On the heels of a four-point explosion in Anaheim, Alex Ovechkin kept his hot streak going by getting on the scoresheet for his fifth consecutive game. He's operating at better than a point-per-game pace now, and that plus-11 rating is a sight for sore eyes after last year's minus-35 disaster.

Big Season Continues For Caps' Ovechkin

News: Alex Ovechkin netted his 34th goal of the season in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Kings.
Analysis: Alex Ovechkin is just one goal behind the Rangers' Rick Nash for the NHL lead. The winger has had an impressive season under coach Barry Trotz, improving his plus/minus rating from minus-35 a year ago to plus-9 in 2014-15. He's also laying hits at a career-best rate, with his 183 on the season putting him in a tie for sixth in the league.
