Flyers' Umberger Coming Along

News: R.J. Umberger indicated Monday that he's recovering well from March 19 surgery to repair his right hip and bilateral abdominal areas. "It's coming up on 11 weeks since my surgery and I couldn't be happier with the progress I'm making and the strength I'm getting back," Umberger said. "I basically totally rebuilt my core system. I'm strengthening my hip, my back, and it's been a good process."
Analysis: The procedure kept R.J. Umberger out for the Flyers' remaining 13 games, spelling a premature end to a 2014-15 season that saw the 33-year-old finish with a career-worst 15 points across 67 contests. Umberger qualified as a massive disappointment after he was acquired in exchange for one of the team's most popular stars in Scott Hartnell, but playing through the injury likely had much to do with his awful numbers. With Umberger feeling fresh heading into 2015-16, he should make for a respectable bounce-back target.

Surgery On Tap Wednesday For Flyers' Umberger

News: R.J. Umberger (hip/abdominal muscles) will undergo surgery Wednesday, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: The Flyers announced that R.J. Umberger's season would come to an end Saturday morning, with GM Ron Hextall indicating that the forward has been playing through the injuries for months. Hextall acknowledged that the Flyers were aware of Umberger's hip issues prior to acquiring him over the past summer, but believed he would be able to effectively play through the injury before requiring surgery at season's end. That clearly didn't seem to be the case, as Umberger put up a career-low 15 points before the Flyers opted to shut him down for good.

Flyers' Umberger Undergoing Season-Ending Surgery

News: R.J. Umberger will undergo surgery on his right hip and abdominal muscles and miss the remainder of the season, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger is expected to require 10 weeks to heal up from the procedure, so he should still have something that resembles a normal offseason. It's possible that the injury has inhibited him all season, as he's been a disaster since arriving in a trade with the Blue Jackets last summer. The winger has mustered only nine goals and 15 points over 67 games this season, and hadn't found the net in his last 18 contests. Umberger probably won't have much trouble besting those marks next season, but at 32 years old, it's clear that his best years are probably behind him. He may have to serve in a bottom-six capacity in 2015-16.

Flyers' Umberger On Track To Sit Tuesday

News: R.J. Umberger is on track to sit out Tuesday's game against the Stars, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Per the report, R.J. Umberger who has not scored a goal in his last 18 games, is in line to be replaced in the Flyers' lineup Tuesday by Vincent Lecavalier.

Flyers' Umberger Assists Against Former Team

News: R.J. Umberger registered an assist in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: In a rematch with his former team, R.J. Umberger had a productive night with a point and four shots on goal, but he was overshadowed by the man he was traded for, Scott Hartnell, who helped out on two scores for the Blue Jackets. Hartnell has outpaced Umberger by 24 points this season despite playing in seven fewer games, making the trade a rather lopsided one in favor of Columbus. After what has been a miserable season in Philadelphia, Umberger will still have two more years on his contract with a cap hit of $4.6 million.

Flyers' Umberger Nets Goal Saturday

News: R.J. Umberger netted his eighth goal of the season in Saturday's game against the Sabres, firing off five shot attempts in the victory.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger has seen his production improve a bit from December and onward, but he's still not scoring with nearly the proficiency the Flyers anticipated when they acquired him from the Blue Jackets. He has just 12 points in 46 games and isn't helpful enough in other categories to compensate for the decline in scoring.

Flyers' Umberger Pots Two In Win

News: R.J. Umberger scored a pair of goals and collected two PIM in Monday's 4-2 loss to the Coyotes.
Analysis: After a long, pointless drought in November, R.J. Umberger has awoken in December to the tune of six points in the month. Almost all of his points have come in road games, and he'll have three more before the Flyers return home. He's not a prolific scorer, but he could be worth a spot start in a deep league.

Flyers' Umberger Notches Point In Win

News: R.J. Umberger notched an assist in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Wild.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger has managed to gather a point in two of his last three games, but his overall output (seven in 34 contests) still represents a dispiriting output. He's been seeing most of his time on the third line this season and doesn't look primed for an elevation to a top-six role anytime soon.

Flyers' Umberger Bags Second Goal

News: R.J. Umberger tallied his second goal of the season and his first power-play point in Wednesday's shootout loss to the Ducks.
Analysis: The move from Columbus to Philadelphia has proven quite unkind for R.J. Umberger, who has mustered just four points and a minus-10 rating over 25 games. While the man Umberger was traded for, Scott Hartnell, has cooled off significantly from his hot start, the trade still appears to be quite lopsided in favor of the Blue Jackets.

Flyers' Umberger: Two Points In Win

News: R.J. Umberger collected a goal, an assist and five PIM in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Penguins.
Analysis: It's the 32-year-old's first goal with his original team, and he seems to have settled in nicely. He's averaging just over 15 minutes of ice time, which fantasy owners hope will lead to a return to his old scoring ways -- R.J. Umberger's cleared 50 points three times in his career.

Jackets Trade Umberger To Flyers

News: R.J. Umberger (shoulder) has been traded to the Flyers along with a 2015 fourth-round pick in exchange for Scott Hartnell, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger requested a trade this offseason after finding himself in coach Todd Richards' doghouse, and was finally granted his wish Monday. The 32-year-old two-way forward appeared in 74 games last season, racking up 18 goals and 16 assists. He played with the Flyers for the first three seasons of his career before logging four straight seasons with 20-plus goals following his arrival in Columbus. He'll look to carve out a more prominent role in his original home.

Jackets' Umberger On Trading Block

News: R.J. Umberger (shoulder) has given the Blue Jackets a list of 10 teams to which he won't accept a trade, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger is an aging two-way player set to make $4.6 million over the next three seasons, so there isn't likely to be much of a market for him heading into this month's draft. If GM Jarmo Kekalainen can't find a taker, Umberger may end up getting a compliance buyout instead.

Jackets' Umberger Requests Trade

News: R.J. Umberger (shoulder) has requested a trade, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: It's hard to say how much the litany of injuries he dealt with at the end of the season hurt his performance when he was on the ice, but R.J. Umberger often seemed to be in coach Todd Richards' doghouse last season and with younger players like the recently signed Alexander Wennberg pushing for jobs, a trade would seem to make sense for both sides.

Jackets' Umberger Dealing With Variety Of Maladies

News: R.J. Umberger played through the Blue Jackets' first-round series with a broken finger, separated shoulder and herniated disc, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: The injuries were severe enough to keep R.J. Umberger out of Games 1 and 6 of the series, and could require one or more offseason procedures. For the moment, it doesn't appear that Umberger will be behind schedule in his preparation for training camp.

News: R.J. Umberger (shoulder) will not play Monday against the Penguins, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: With R.J. Umberger hurting, Jared Boll is slated to rejoin the Blue Jackets' forward mix Monday as they try to extend their playoff series against the Penguins (who are up 3-2) to seven games.

Blue Jackets' Umberger (Upper Body) To Return

News: R.J. Umberger (upper body) expects to play in Game 2 against Pittsburgh on Saturday, the Blue Jackets' team website reports.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger's injury forced him out of Columbus' final four regular season games, as well as Game 1 of the playoffs; however, reportedly feeling better, Umberger should be back in action Saturday.

News: R.J. Umberger (upper body) says he's "close" to returning to action, and could be back in the lineup for Game 2 of the Blue Jackets' opening round series against the Penguins on Saturday, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: He was in and out of Jackets coach Todd Richards' doghouse down the stretch, but the club will welcome the veteran winger back into the lineup as soon as R.J. Umberger is ready.

News: R.J. Umberger (upper body) will not play Wednesday against the Penguins, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.

Blue Jackets' Umberger Out With Upper-Body Injury

News: R.J. Umberger will miss a couple of weeks with an upper-body injury.

Jackets' Umberger Sees Minimal Shifts Sunday

News: R.J. Umberger went to the locker room early in the third period Sunday with what the Blue Jackets are describing as "soreness," the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Well, that's enlightening. R.J. Umberger had been a recent healthy scratch and was skating on the fourth line Sunday, so the Jackets likely won't hesitate to just shut him down if the injury (whatever it really is) proves to be at all serious.

Jackets' Umberger Facing Another Scratch Tuesday

News: Even with Nathan Horton sidelined, R.J. Umberger did not skate on one of the Blue Jackets' four lines during Monday's practice, and he'll likely be a healthy scratch again on Tuesday, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Jared Boll will play in his first game since November to replace Horton, and R.J. Umberger seems firmly lodged in coach Todd Richards' doghouse as the Jackets try to hang on to a playoff spot. Don't expect to get much production out of the veteran forward during your stretch run.

Columbus Makes Umberger Healthy Scratch Saturday

News: R.J. Umberger will be a healthy scratch Saturday against the Hurricanes, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: While R.J. Umberger has a respectable 33 points on the season, the eight-year veteran only has provided only one point in the last nine games. Corey Tropp takes his place in Saturday's lineup.

Jackets' Umberger Returns Sunday

News: R.J. Umberger will return to the lineup Sunday when the Blue Jackets face the Islanders.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger had been a healthy scratch the last two games but gets the call to return finally. The team cited that they were just trying to get others some playing time, but it could have also been a way to jump-start the 31-year old wing who had just one point of a six-game stretch.

Jackets Will Scratch Umberger Thursday

News: Coach Todd Richards confirmed R.J. Umberger would be a healthy scratch Thursday against the Canadiens, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Richards stated that a desire to get Cam Atkinson in the lineup motivated his decision to bench R.J. Umberger for the night. It will be the first game Umberger has missed this season.
