Jackets Trade Umberger To Flyers

News: R.J. Umberger (shoulder) has been traded to the Flyers along with a 2015 fourth-round pick in exchange for Scott Hartnell, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger requested a trade this offseason after finding himself in coach Todd Richards' doghouse, and was finally granted his wish Monday. The 32-year-old two-way forward appeared in 74 games last season, racking up 18 goals and 16 assists. He played with the Flyers for the first three seasons of his career before logging four straight seasons with 20-plus goals following his arrival in Columbus. He'll look to carve out a more prominent role in his original home.

Jackets' Umberger On Trading Block

News: R.J. Umberger (shoulder) has given the Blue Jackets a list of 10 teams to which he won't accept a trade, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger is an aging two-way player set to make $4.6 million over the next three seasons, so there isn't likely to be much of a market for him heading into this month's draft. If GM Jarmo Kekalainen can't find a taker, Umberger may end up getting a compliance buyout instead.

Jackets' Umberger Requests Trade

News: R.J. Umberger (shoulder) has requested a trade, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: It's hard to say how much the litany of injuries he dealt with at the end of the season hurt his performance when he was on the ice, but R.J. Umberger often seemed to be in coach Todd Richards' doghouse last season and with younger players like the recently signed Alexander Wennberg pushing for jobs, a trade would seem to make sense for both sides.

Jackets' Umberger Dealing With Variety Of Maladies

News: R.J. Umberger played through the Blue Jackets' first-round series with a broken finger, separated shoulder and herniated disc, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: The injuries were severe enough to keep R.J. Umberger out of Games 1 and 6 of the series, and could require one or more offseason procedures. For the moment, it doesn't appear that Umberger will be behind schedule in his preparation for training camp.

News: R.J. Umberger (shoulder) will not play Monday against the Penguins, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: With R.J. Umberger hurting, Jared Boll is slated to rejoin the Blue Jackets' forward mix Monday as they try to extend their playoff series against the Penguins (who are up 3-2) to seven games.

Blue Jackets' Umberger (Upper Body) To Return

News: R.J. Umberger (upper body) expects to play in Game 2 against Pittsburgh on Saturday, the Blue Jackets' team website reports.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger's injury forced him out of Columbus' final four regular season games, as well as Game 1 of the playoffs; however, reportedly feeling better, Umberger should be back in action Saturday.

Jackets' Umberger Could Return For Game 2

News: R.J. Umberger (upper body) says he's "close" to returning to action, and could be back in the lineup for Game 2 of the Blue Jackets' opening round series against the Penguins on Saturday, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: He was in and out of Jackets coach Todd Richards' doghouse down the stretch, but the club will welcome the veteran winger back into the lineup as soon as R.J. Umberger is ready.

News: R.J. Umberger will miss a couple of weeks with an upper-body injury.

Jackets' Umberger Sees Minimal Shifts Sunday

News: R.J. Umberger went to the locker room early in the third period Sunday with what the Blue Jackets are describing as "soreness," the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Well, that's enlightening. R.J. Umberger had been a recent healthy scratch and was skating on the fourth line Sunday, so the Jackets likely won't hesitate to just shut him down if the injury (whatever it really is) proves to be at all serious.

Jackets' Umberger Facing Another Scratch Tuesday

News: Even with Nathan Horton sidelined, R.J. Umberger did not skate on one of the Blue Jackets' four lines during Monday's practice, and he'll likely be a healthy scratch again on Tuesday, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Jared Boll will play in his first game since November to replace Horton, and R.J. Umberger seems firmly lodged in coach Todd Richards' doghouse as the Jackets try to hang on to a playoff spot. Don't expect to get much production out of the veteran forward during your stretch run.

Columbus Makes Umberger Healthy Scratch Saturday

News: R.J. Umberger will be a healthy scratch Saturday against the Hurricanes, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: While R.J. Umberger has a respectable 33 points on the season, the eight-year veteran only has provided only one point in the last nine games. Corey Tropp takes his place in Saturday's lineup.

Jackets' Umberger Returns Sunday

News: R.J. Umberger will return to the lineup Sunday when the Blue Jackets face the Islanders.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger had been a healthy scratch the last two games but gets the call to return finally. The team cited that they were just trying to get others some playing time, but it could have also been a way to jump-start the 31-year old wing who had just one point of a six-game stretch.

Jackets Scratch Umberger Again On Friday

News: R.J. Umberger will be a healthy scratch again on Friday.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger was out of the lineup on Thursday to give Cam Atkinson some playing time and that seems to be the case again for Friday's contest against the Rangers.

Jackets Will Scratch Umberger Thursday

News: Coach Todd Richards confirmed R.J. Umberger would be a healthy scratch Thursday against the Canadiens, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Richards stated that a desire to get Cam Atkinson in the lineup motivated his decision to bench R.J. Umberger for the night. It will be the first game Umberger has missed this season.

Jackets Likely To Scratch Umberger On Thursday

News: R.J. Umberger is expected to be scratched Thursday against the Canadiens, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Cam Atkinson was spotted skating in R.J. Umberger's place on the Brandon Dubinsky line at Thursday's morning skate, suggesting Umberger will bow out of the lineup. It's not clear at the moment whether Umberger is dealing with an injury or this is a healthy scratch. The latter wouldn't be a huge surprise, considering Umberger has provided only three points in the Jackets' 10 games since the Olympic break.

Jackets' Umberger Ends Minor Skid

News: R.J. Umberger tallied a shorthanded goal in Thursday's shootout loss to the Sharks.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger had gone without a point for the previous three games, but he pushed through for a goal even as the Jackets were at a two-man disadvantage. He entered from the box after the first penalty expired and deposited the puck between goalie Alex Stalock's pads for his 18th goal.

News: R.J. Umberger scored a power-play goal and added an assist against the Ducks on Monday.

Two-Goal Night For Jackets' Umberger

News: R.J. Umberger delivered a pair of goals in Tuesday's win over the Kings -- his first time finding twine since Jan. 2.
Analysis: In his seven-game interim between goals, R.J. Umberger managed just a lone assist. Still, with 26 points in 49 games, he's been of value in deeper formats. With Tuesday's power-play goal, 10 of those points have come on the man advantage.

Jackets' Umberger Picks Up Two Helpers Tuesday

News: R.J. Umberger notched two assists in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Avalanche.
Analysis: He's been riding shotgun recently for young center Ryan Johansen, who's enjoying a breakout season, but R.J. Umberger still disappears from the game too often and has just three goals and five points in his last seven games despite skating on Johansen's wing. With Nathan Horton set to make his Blue Jackets debut soon, Umberger looks like a prime candidate to get bumped down to another line and lose what fantasy upside he has at the moment.

Jackets' Umberger: Two-Time Sniper

News: R.J. Umberger scored two goals, one on the power play and the other into the empty net, in Saturday's win over Philadelphia.
Analysis: He has three goals in his last three games and 20 points, 10 of which are goals, in 36 contests this season. He's not going to reach his mid-50s career mark, but his value to the Jackets is undeniable.

News: R.J. Umberger grabbed a goal and an assist in Friday's win over Minnesota, giving him three points over the last three games.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger is on pace to hit close to 40-45 points for the season, numbers are in line with what he usually does. Umberger won't deliver huge numbers, but he's in line to see top-six minutes with Columbus.

Umberger Scores In Jackets' Loss

News: R.J. Umberger scored one of the Blue Jackets' two goals in Friday's shootout loss to Montreal, his second goal in a four-game span.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger has been quiet to start the season with 10 points through 19 games, but should see more scoring opportunities going forward. He can be an asset in deeper leagues as he does log an average of 2:29 on the power play.

Blue Jackets' Umberger Skates Saturday

News: R.J. Umberger (neck) was on the ice for the Blue Jackets' Saturday morning skate, Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger has been dealing with a neck issue for the past few days but managed to play through it Thursday night. He'll be a game-time decision for Saturday's contest against the Islanders, but the fact that he is skating with the team in the morning is an encouraging sign.
