Kings' Schultz Re-Ups For Two Years

News: Jeff Schultz re-signed with the Kings on a two-year, $1.7 million contract Monday, Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: After declining to extend Jeff Schultz a qualifying offer earlier in the day, the Kings negotiated a deal to keep the defenseman in the fold just hours before he was set to hit unrestricted free agency. Schultz didn't warrant much fantasy attention with three points, a minus-6 rating, and meager hit and block totals over 26 games last season, but he'll at least give the team some reliable depth on defense. On the occasions he's in the lineup, he'll most likely find himself on the team's third pairing.

Schultz Likely To Replace Regehr For Kings

News: Jeff Schultz figures to join the lineup if Robyn Regehr is unable to play in Game 2, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: Jeff Schultz has some playoff experience which might serve him well as he attempts to step into the fray. Look for him to occupy a spot on the bottom pairing.

Kings Recall Schultz

News: Jeff Schultz was recalled from AHL Manchester on Wednesday, Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: Jeff Schultz will replace the recently-demoted Colin Fraser on the roster for Wednesday's Game 7 against the Sharks. Matt Greene is still expected to join the lineup on defense in place of the injured Willie Mitchell, relegating Schultz to the press box.

Kings Demote Schultz

News: Jeff Schultz has been assigned to AHL Manchester, Jon Rosen of LAKingsInsider.com reports.
Analysis: Jeff Schultz, a veteran of 399 career NHL contests, returns to the AHL, where he has recorded seven points in 41 games this season. He continues to provide the Kings with organizational blue line depth.

Kings Recall Schultz

News: Jeff Schultz was recalled from AHL Manchester on Wednesday, Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: The Kings elected to make a few roster tweaks on their off day, bringing up Jeff Schultz and Tyler Toffoli and shipping Tanner Pearson and Linden Vey to Manchester. Schultz isn't expected to be much more than a seventh defenseman while he's up with the Kings, gaining only occasional entry into the lineup.

Kings Sent Schultz Back To AHL

News: Jeff Schultz was sent back down to the AHL on Sunday.
Analysis: Jeff Schultz didn't get in a game in a brief stint with the Kings and will continue to serve as organizational depth in the minors.

Schultz Rejoins Kings

News: Jeff Schultz was recalled from AHL Manchester, Jon Rosen of LAKingsInsider.com reports.
Analysis: Jeff Schultz's recall appears to be a precautionary move after Robyn Regehr was forced to leave Monday's game with what looked to be an upper-body injury. It sounds like Regehr will be good to go for Tuesday's contest, but Schultz will be on hand to replace him if he suffers a last-minute setback.

Kings' Schultz Clears Waivers, Reports To AHL

News: Jeff Schultz cleared waivers and was sent down to the AHL, according to Pro Hockey Talk's James O'Brien.
Analysis: The Kings' defensive depth put Jeff Schultz in a roster crunch. He'll likely be back up with the big club at some point this season when they need another body on the blue line.

Kings Dismiss Schultz In Final Cuts

News: Jeff Schultz was placed on waivers by the Kings on Sunday, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports.
Analysis: Jeff Schultz seemed to have the inside track on an Opening Night roster spot for the Kings throughout camp, but the improved health of Jake Muzzin may have changed the team's thinking at the last minute. There's a decent chance he's picked up by another club during the waiver process.

Schultz Heading To Los Angeles

News: Jeff Schultz signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with Los Angeles on Friday, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.
Analysis: Jeff Schultz was bought out by Washington earlier this week and will bring his brand of grinding defensive hockey to the left coast. Schultz's best season was the 2009-10 campaign when he rode shotgun with Mike Green, putting up 23 points and finishing a plus-50. Schultz likely won't make much of an offensive impact with the Kings considering the presence of Drew Doughty, Slava Voynov and Alec Martinez. Still, he'll be a solid depth player for the Kings' defense.

Caps Buy Out Defensemen Schultz

News: Jeff Schultz was officially bought out by the Capitals on Thursday, CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: The move will save the Capitals a $2.75 million cap hit, and pay Jeff Schultz $1 million over each of the next two seasons. After clearing waivers on Wednesday, he will now be free to sign with any team but the Capitals next season.

Caps' Schultz Clears Waivers, Will Be Bought Out

News: Jeff Schultz successfully cleared waivers Wednesday and can now be bought out by the Capitals, the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: As anticipated, Jeff Schultz will be let go by the Capitals after providing diminishing returns in the first three seasons of his four-year, $11 million contract signed in July 2010. The 27-year-old logged just three points in 26 games for the Capitals this season.

Caps Waive Schultz

News: Jeff Schultz has been placed on unconditional waivers by the Caps for the purpose of buying him out, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports.
Analysis: The 2004 first-rounder notched just three assists in 23 games worth of sporadic action this past season and had requested a trade, so this move doesn't come as a big surprise.

Caps' Schultz Requests to Be Traded

News: Jeff Schultz has requested to be traded, The Washington Post's Katie Carrera reports.
Analysis: Jeff Schultz has seen his playing time diminish over the past two years, so this news should come as no surprise.

Caps' Schultz Will Play Wednesday

News: Jeff Schultz (illness) will play Wednesday against the Panthers, the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Jeff Schultz has been battling an illness, missing practice Tuesday, so it's a good sign that he will suit up Wednesday.

Caps' Schultz Misses Practice With Illness

News: Jeff Schultz (illness) did not practice Tuesday, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Jeff Schultz isn't an especially valuable fantasy commodity (5 points in 27 games this season), but his absence is unexpected. Deep league fantasy owners should take note, and consider him questionable to play in Tuesday's game against Boston. Word on his availability should come in the next few hours.

Caps' Schultz Re-United With Mike Green

News: Schultz will play alongside Mike Green for the second straight contest Sunday, the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: After Schultz put up the top plus/minus rating playing with Green last season, injuries have caused a change to Green's partner. With Schultz back in the lineup the two are now back together. This increases his value, but he still remains more of a defensive-minded blueliner, giving Green the chance to join the rush.

Caps' Schultz Back In Action on Tuesday

News: Schultz (thumb) returned to the Washington lineup Tuesday after missing the team's previous nine games.
Analysis: Schultz played 19:15 in the contest. He has now played 30 games on the season and he has just five assists to show for it. He obviously has no fantasy value.

Capitals' Schultz Could Make Early Return

News: Schultz (thumb) will warm up Tuesday in an attempt to play in the Capitals' game against the Canadiens, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Schultz is still on IR, so the Capitals will have to make a roster move before he returns to the ice. If Schultz does not play Tuesday, there is a good chance he will suit up for Saturday's Winter Classic.

Caps' Schultz Pushing For Return On New Year's Day

News: Schultz (thumb) is hoping to be able to play in the highly anticipated 2011 Winter Classic on New Year's Day this Saturday, the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Schultz has missed the last nine after breaking his thumb December 6, but has been skating and stick-handling the past four practices. It will come down to testing out himself Tuesday and seeing how his hand responds, but ultimately head trainer Greg Smith will have the last say.

Caps' Schultz Fractures Thumb on Monday

News: Schultz fractured his thumb in the second period of Monday's loss to Toronto.
Analysis: Schultz is expected to miss four-to-six weeks with the injury. He is yet to record a goal in 29 games this season.

Capitals' Schultz Struggling Through Slow Start

News: Schultz has yet to score his first goal of 2010-11.
Analysis: Schultz has never been much of a goal scorer in his career and does not offer much value in fantasy leagues until he picks up the pace with points.

Caps' Schultz On Ice When It Counts

News: Schultz led the league in plus/minus a season ago and has continued to be on the ice when the points count. While the defenseman is not much of a scorer he is doing something right with continuous pluses in the category.
Analysis: Schultz has only two assists on the year and already has a plus-six rating through nine games. On his way to a plus-50 rating last season he chipped in 23 points. As far as sleeper pickups, Schultz is one to watch. If the plus ratings keep on coming then the points will follow.

Schultz stays in nation's capital

News: Defenseman Jeff Schultz has agreed to a four-year, $11 million contract to remain with the Washington Capitals. The deal was announced Wednesday afternoon.
Analysis: The 24-year-old Schultz led the NHL last season with a plus-50 rating and had a team-high 129 blocked shots. He had three goals and career highs of 20 assists and 23 points in 73 games. Schultz, the Capitals' first-round choice -- 27th overall -- in the 2004 entry draft, was a restricted free agent and had filed for salary arbitration. He now comes back to one of the best offensive teams in the NHL. Schultz's strengths are not on offense, but he is developing as a solid two-way player. He is best owned in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for plus-minus, but he might be a nice late-round flier in larger formats on Draft Day.

Schultz finishes at plus-50

News: Defenseman Jeff Schultz became the first Capitals player to lead the league in plus-minus rating. He was plus-2 for Sunday's season finale against the Bruins, putting him at plus-50 for season.
Analysis: Schultz was a combined plus-30 in his first three seasons, so clearly the 2009-10 season proved to be a breakout campaign. He also had a career-high 20 assists and 23 points. Schultz benefited greatly from playing in a top offensive system. He is a sound defender, but his offensive talents aren't elite. Schultz is a restricted free agent, so his Fantasy status could change, if he doesn't return to Washington in 2010-11. Track his offseason progress, but we can't envision Schultz being more than a No. 5 Fantasy defenseman and flier in leagues that reward heavily for plus-minus.
