News:Jim Slater is week-to-week with an upper body injury, the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis:Jim Slater was injured during the Jets' loss to the Maple Leafs on Tuesday, and there are rumors swirling that he has a broken hand, although that has not been confirmed. The Jets called up Patrice Cormier from AHL St. Johns to take Slater's place.
News:Jim Slater picked up an assist on Chris Thorburn's first period goal during Monday's 2-1 loss to the Boston Bruins,
Analysis:Jim Slater is considered more of a grinder rather than a consistent source of fantasy production, so his helper on Monday is a rare ink blot on the score sheet. The Jets' top young guns and Slater's 122 points in 451 career games make him no better than a free agent floater fantasy wise.
News:Jim Slater agreed to a three-year, $4.8 million contract extension with the Jets on Wednesday, ESPN's Pierre LeBrun reports.
Analysis:Jim Slater picked up 13 goals and eight assists in a career-high 78 games with the Jets last season. Expect him to center one of the Jets' reserve lines again when the new campaign kicks off.

News:Jim Slater netted two of Winnipeg's three goals in an overtime loss to the visiting Lightning on Saturday night. The 29-year-old finished the season with 13 scores in all.
Analysis: When it came to ice time in 2011-12, Jim Slater was admirable in his ability to do more with less. Nonetheless, a forward outside of the Jets' top two units is a hard sell for fantasy purposes.
News:Jim Slater buried his 11th score of the year Friday night in Carolina as the Jets defeated their divisional rivals in overtime, 4-3.
Analysis: Now with 18 points on the season, Jim Slater is a safe bet for 15-20 in that column each year moving forward.
News:Jim Slater recorded his 10th score of the year Tuesday night as the Jets came up short against the Penguins by a final score of 4-8.
Analysis: Though Jim Slater along with teammates Tanner Glass and Chris Thorburn constitute the fan-favorite "GST" (Glass, Slater, Thorburn) line in Winnipeg, the former first-round selection is slightly less adored in fantasy circles. The Michigan native has accumulated just 16 points in 69 games played, not to mention a minus-11 rating on the year.
News:Jim Slater notched his eighth goal on the year just 49 seconds into Monday's game in Ottawa, helping the Jets to a 2-0 victory.
Analysis: Though Jim Slater will give you a productive night here or there, he is a long way from fantasy relevance. Unless head coach Claude Noel permanently moves him to one of Winnipeg's first two offensive units, the American veteran is an unlikely candidate to surpass 30 points this season, or make a significant impact in any other category.
News:Jim Slater will return to the lineup Wednesday after missing the last two games due to an upper body injury, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: He'll slot in on the third line, centering Tanner Glass and Antti Miettinen, as the Jets take on the Canadiens.

Analysis: The Jets would not have re-assigned forward Patrice Cormier back to the club's AHL affiliate if were they not confident that Jim Slater would make his return soon. Barring any unforeseen setbacks, Slater will be ready to go Wednesday, though he should be utilized only in the deepest of leagues.
News:Jim Slater, out with ribs/oblique injuries, took part in Friday's practice, the Winnipeg Sun reports.

Analysis: Bex Maxwell is expected to replace him in the lineup, while Jim Slater remains day-to-day after crashing into the boards Saturday.
News:Jim Slater left Saturday's game after crashing into the end boards and did not return, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis:Jim Slater is not a big scorer by any means, but the Jets don't run super deep so his loss would still matter on the team level. Slater did pot his third goal of the season before departing, making him an unlikely source to be tied for the team lead with Kyle Wellwood.
News:Jim Slater (flu) returned to the ice Friday and should play Saturday, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: He's a depth guy on a struggling team, which says everything you need to know about the degree to which he can help your fantasy team.
News:Jim Slater (flu) could miss Thursday night's game against Ottawa, the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis:Jim Slater should be fine by the time Winnipeg takes on Carolina on Saturday. The veteran forward has never put up more than 20 points in a season and should only be used as end-of-the-bench depth in deeper leagues.
News:Jim Slater scored two goals in the Jets' 4-3 loss at Chicago on Thursday.
Analysis: Both of Jim Slater's goals came off of deflections early in the game. They came in quick succession and were deflected off shots by defensemen. The Jets' defense has no shortage of offensive prowess, so any center on the roster should be in position to add a few deflection goals. At 30 years old, Slater isn't going to be a reliable option in fantasy and probably isn't worth more than a bench spot in deep leagues as insurance.
News:Jim Slater will play Sunday against the Canadiens, his first game action since sustaining a concussion last New Year's Eve, the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis:Jim Slater returns in the first game of the season for the reborn Jets. He'll reportedly line up with Tanner Glass and Chris Thorburn on the energy line, otherwise known as the fourth line. His fantasy value is limited at best, but Slater is a checking forward who could rev up the home crowd once he shakes off any rust left over from the injury.

News: Slater (concussion) is out for at least another month, Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

News: There is currently no timetable for Slater's (concussion) return to the ice, Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Slater did not play at all in January, but he still does not appear any closer to a return. Slater remains out indefinitely.

Analysis: Nothing major in terms of fantasy news here, the Thrashers have many players to choose from and Slater is not high up on the depth chart in terms of consistent scoring.
News: Slater (concussion) will not play Thursday against the Lightning, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
Analysis: With 12 points and 19 PIMs in 36 games though, Slater's absence is more of a hit to the Thrashers' depth up front than it is to fantasy owners.
News: Slater sat out Wednesday's practice and is still recovering from a concussion, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Slater has little impact fantasy wise since the Thrashers have so much more young talent ahead of him, so don't be too worried about his status as it relates to your lineup.

Analysis: It's unclear how long Slater will be out, but he will not be on the roster for the beginning of the season.
News: Slater (wrist) skated in practice Thursday, but did not take part in team drills, Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Slater's status for the season opener is still up in the air. His potential absence hurts the Thrashers more than it does fantasy owners on the heels of his 18-point output in 61 games last season.
Thrashers Unsure of Exact Nature of Slater's Injury
News: Slater's wrist injury may be more serious than originally thought, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: "They are still trying to figure out exactly what is wrong with it," coach Craig Ramsey said. "So far there have been some different ideas about what is wrong. He doesn't want to rush into anything too. He wants to make sure it's done right." Slater's injury has left the Thrashers a little thin at center, and they still have no timetable on when they might have him back.

News: Slater took part in skating drills on Monday after sustaining a wrist injury last week, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Slater is considered day-to-day with the injury, so we will continue to monitor his status throughout preseason. He had a career-high 11 goals last season.
News: Thrashers C Jim Slater (lower body injury) left in the first period of Saturday's win over the Penguins and didn't return.
Analysis: Slater has never topped 20 points in five NHL seasons and doesn't rack up a whole lot of penalties. He remains a non-factor in Fantasy play when healthy.
News:Jim Slater's second goal of the game snapped a tie and lifted Atlanta to a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. Evander Kane skated down the left side, went around the net and placed a perfect pass on Slater's stick. Slater slipped it in for a 4-3 lead with 6:32. Kane and Slater hooked up on a similar play to put Atlanta up 1-0 late in the first.
Analysis: We are not sure what has changed for Slater in January, but he definitely has a fire lit underneath him. He has totaled six goals, nine points and a plus-3 rating in 14 games. He is finally getting steady minutes and producing. Still, Fantasy owners can't view Slater as more than a low-end Fantasy flier because he is playing mostly off a checking line and is logging no power-play time.
News:The Sports Xchange reports for the last couple of months, Thrashers C Jim Slater was never quite sure if he was going to play or be scratched from the lineup. Yet the veteran center never complained or became a distraction to the team. Because of that, it's even nicer now to see Slater get rewarded for his patience. With a goal and an assist in Saturday's win over the Hurricanes -- the 300th game of Slater's career, Slater not has six points (four goals, two assists) in the last six games.
Analysis: While it's nice for Slater that he is finally being worked into the mix, he is still not logging top-six time. He might be the shining example of a team player, but that doesn't cut it in Fantasy. This is one of those situations where nice guys do finish last. Slater still has marginal Fantasy appeal.
News: Thrashers C Jim Slater scored his team's only goals and finished at plus-2 during a 5-2 loss to the Penguins on Tuesday. Slater scored his second and third goals of the season about 13 minutes apart in the second period. Slater had one goal in 20 games before getting both Atlanta goals. He cut the Penguins' lead to 3-2 when he stole Sidney Crosby's backhand pass from the corner and beat goalie Brent Johnson from the slot at 16:14 of the second, but the Penguins scored the only two goals of the third.
Analysis: Slater has all three of his points in his last eight games. However, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then. Slater sometimes doesn't even dress for Atlanta. He has no Fantasy appeal until further notice.
News:The Sports Xchange reports if Atlanta coach John Anderson put Jim Slater back in the lineup to generate some more hits, his mission was accomplished in Wednesday's game against the Flames. In the first period alone, Slater leveled several Calgary players, including Rene Bourque and hulking center Olli Jokinen. Slater led all players with four hits in the game, his first since Nov. 27.
Analysis: The Thrashers don't ask much of Slater except to play hard on defense when active. He has only dressed for 12 games this season and has no points. Atlanta has a pretty stable set of forwards, so until Slater becomes more well-rounded, he is going to find it hard to crack the lineup. He has no Fantasy appeal until further notice.
News: The Thrashers re-signed free-agent center Jim Slater Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Analysis: Slater has recorded 70 points (31 goals) in 274 career NHL games in four seasons with the Thrashers. He had 18 points (eight goals) in 60 games last season and ranked second on the team with a career-high tying two shorthanded goals, despite missing a total of 20 games due to injury. Slater is not a top offensive player and is mostly used on the lower lines as a faceoff and short-handed specialist. He has low-end Fantasy appeal in standard leagues, while also being a potential flier in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed and faceoff stats.
News: Thrashers C Jim Slater scored a goal during Sunday's 6-4 loss to the Capitals. Slater put the Thrashers ahead 2-1 1:23 into the second as he beat Jose Theodore during a short-handed situation. It was Slater's eighth goal and second short-handed score.
Analysis: Slater has pretty much been par for the course in 2008-09 as far as stats are concerned. He is certainly a player that is far more valuable to his real team than Fantasy owners, but Slater does pass as a viable option in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats.
News: Atlanta C Jim Slater returned to the Thrashers lineup on Thursday against the Rangers. He did not record an offensive stat but took five shots.

He has two goals and one assist during a three-game point streak.
Analysis: Slater has four goals and three assists in his last 11 games. It has been one of his most productive stretches of the season and it didn't look as though he missed a beat after missing several weeks due to injury. Slater has been a quality option for the Thrashers in 2008-09 as an energy-line player. Still, he is not an elite offensive weapon and has minimal Fantasy value when healthy.
News:The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Thrashers C Jim Slater practiced Monday for the first time since injuring his shoulder Jan. 20. "It actually felt good," Slater said. "First time out there with the guys. Finally got to pass the puck a little bit and receive good passes. With one guy out there (the past couple of weeks), you can only do so many drills. It's good to be out there with the guys. You can do a lot of different drills, especially with goalies out there. I don't think I'm ready yet. I'm hoping by the end of this week. It's a lot different once you get in a game. I feel good. It's coach's discretion, but hopefully by the end of the week I'll be looked at."
Analysis: Coach John Anderson said he liked what he saw from the veteran forward. "It's just a conditioning thing," Anderson said. "Hes been cleared by the doctors. News: Atlanta C Jim Slater and D Steve McCarthy were healthy scratches for Thursday's game at Philadelphia.
Analysis: Slater has minimal Fantasy appeal when he is in the lineup, but absolutely none while in the press box.
News: Jim Slater picked up an assist and plus-1 rating in just 7:26 of ice time in Tuesday’s shootout loss against the Sabres.
Analysis: Slater does not log enough ice time to warrant Fantasy consideration in all but the largest of formats.
News: D Niclas Havelid, C Niko Kapanen, RW Glen Metropolit, C Jim Slater and RW J.P. Vigier were all scoreless with one shot on goal in Friday's loss at New Jersey.
Analysis: Slater is only worth a spot as a reserve in Fantasy leagues of 14 or more teams at this point.

Analysis: Only Holik is considered useful in most Fantasy leagues, while the others are only worth a look in the largest of formats.
News: Centers Glen Metropolit and Jim Slater are still searching for ways to earn playing time from Thrashers coach Bob Hartley.
Analysis: Metropolit, who played a team-low 7:46 in Atlanta's opening-night shootout loss to Tampa Bay, touched the ice just 12 times for a total of 9:58 against Florida. Slater played 17 seconds fewer over 16 shifts. Neither is worth owning in Fantasy play right now.

News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Ilya Kovalchuk has been demoted to the third line. He practiced Thursday with C Serge Aubin and RW Jim Slater. Head coach Bob Hartley said he would remain there at Florida Friday. "Kovy is our franchise player and Kovy is only 22 years old," Hartley said. "We have to make him better. Some of the stuff he does hurts us."
Analysis: Kovalchuk's defensive lapses are more noticeable now that he's goal-less in his past five games. He got called for an illegal stick in his last game out, but Hartley called that "a peanut in an elephant's stomach." Peter Bondra took Kovalchuk's spot on the top line with Marc Savard and Scott Mellanby. Kovalchuk remains the league's leading scorer, so don't go all Bob Hartley on him and demote him to your bench. This hurts Savard a bit, since teams will be able to concentrate on him a little more. Don't expect it to be a permanent move though. Bondra should receive a boost in value on the top line. Aubin could pick up a couple assists over the next few games playing with Kovalchuk. Slater still isn't worth owning just yet.
