Valabik Signs Two-Way Deal with Pittsburgh

News: Valabik has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Penguins, reports NHL.com.
Analysis: Valabik played a total of 59 games between the NHL and AHL last season, recording 11 assists and 189 penalty minutes. At 6-foot-7, 245 pounds, he can be an imposing force on defense, though he will likely play in Pittsburgh only if injuries strike the blue line.

Thrashers Trade Valabik To Boston

News: The Thrashers traded Valabik and Rich Peverley to the Bruins on Friday for Blake Wheeler and Mark Stuart, the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Part of the incentive for Boston to make the deal was to clear enough cap room for another trade consummated Friday that will bring Tomas Kaberle to the Bruins. Valabik has spent the year in the AHL, recording no goals, nine assists and 165 penalty minutes.

Valabik Waived By Thrashers

News: The Thrashers waived Valabik on Friday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Valabik did not appear in any of the Thrashers' three games up to this point, and his release clears the way for Jim Slater (wrist) to return to the lineup. Valabik will report to AHL Chicago unless he is claimed by another team.

Thrashers' Valabik Battling for Roster Spot

News: Valabik, who is fully recovered after tearing his ACL, is battling Freddy Meyer for the Thrashers' final defensive roster spot, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Even if he does come away with a place on the team, Valabik isn't likely to receive enough regular minutes to make an impact on most fantasy rosters.

Valabik (ACL) Expects to be Ready By Camp

News: Valabik (torn ACL) expects to be ready for the start of the Thrashers' training camp, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Valabik isn't much of a scoring threat, but rather more of a stay-at-home blueliner. At best you can hope for penalty minutes.

Surgery ends Valabik's season

News: The Sports Xchange reports Thrashers D Boris Valabik will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on Feb. 11 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
Analysis: Valabik didn't make his season debut until December because of an ankle injury. He played only 23 games before the torn ACL put him out for good. Valabik is more of a checking presence from the blue line and is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM when healthy. However, he can be cut in all seasonal formats and has little appeal in long-term keeper formats.

Thrashers place Valabik on IR

News: The Thrashers have placed D Boris Valabik (knee) on injured reserve.
Analysis: Valabik suffered a serious knee injury on Friday and is likely out for the season. Feel free to cut him in all Fantasy formats at this point. When healthy, Valabik is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Not looking good for Valabik

News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Thrashers believe D Boris Valabik, who was injured on Friday against the Capitals, suffered a torn ACL in his left knee that might need surgery. However, the team is waiting for the swelling to go down before re-examining the blueliner.
Analysis: Valabik didn't make his season debut until December because of an ankle injury. Now, it appears he has suffered his second long-term injury within a year. Valabik is more of a checking presence from the blue line and is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM when healthy. However, it appears he might need to be cut in Fantasy.

Valabik out after leg injury

News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Thrashers D Boris Valabik is out indefinitely after suffering a left leg injury on Friday against the Capitals. He missed Saturday's game against Florida.
Analysis: Valabik didn't make his season debut until December because of an ankle injury. It doesn't sound as though as he suffered a setback in that regard, but it does appear he might have another long-term injury. Valabik is more of a checking presence from the blue line and is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM when healthy.

Valabik makes season debut Wednesday

News: Atlanta's 6-foot-7 defenseman Boris Valabik made his season debut on Wednesday against the Flames after being out all season with an ankle injury. He tallied an assist and finished at even in 14:29 of ice time.
Analysis: Valabik hadn't really gotten the chance to jump into the Thrashers' lineup since he came up from the AHL in mid-November since the team has been on a roll. They felt they needed a little extra muscle on Wednesday, so that is why Valabik played. We aren't so sure he is going to be a regular to the lineup, but if he eventual plays on a consistent basis, then Valabik will be a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Valabik off IR, to AHL for conditioning

News: The Thrashers have removed D Boris Valabik (ankle) from IR and have sent him to the AHL for a conditioning stint.
Analysis: Valabik is an enforcer with the Thrashers and will only be worth using in deeper leagues that reward PIM when he's back healthy.

News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Thrashers D Boris Valabik practiced Tuesday for the first time since undergoing ankle surgery on Oct. 7. Valabik has been cleared to play but will need some time to get back in game shape.
Analysis: Valabik is an enforcer with the Thrashers and will only be worth using in deeper leagues that reward PIM when he's back healthy.

Valabik (ankle) out 4-6 weeks

News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Thrashers D Boris Valabik will miss 4-6 weeks after undergoing ankle surgery on Thursday. Valabik hurt a tendon in the joint during practice.
Analysis: Valabik's physical presence will be missed on the ice and in deeper leagues that reward PIM. Stash him away in those formats.

Thrashers keep enforcer Valabik

News: The Thrashers re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Boris Valabik to a multi-year contract Tuesday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Analysis: The 23-year-old Valabik recorded five assists and 132 penalty minutes in 50 games with the Thrashers last season. The 6-7, 240-pound defenseman has appeared in 57 career NHL games with Atlanta, earning five assists and 174 penalty minutes. The 2004 first-round pick (10th overall) has always been an enforcer and will likely keep that role in 2009-10. Consider him primarily in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Valabik returns from shoulder injury

News: Atlanta D Boris Valabik returned to the ice Friday against the Panthers for the first time since March 17. He had missed six games with a shoulder injury. He failed to record a point in 16:43 of ice time, but spent two minutes in the penalty box.
Analysis: Valabik is a pretty decent defensive force on the Thrashers' blue line and he is certainly not on the ice for his offensive skills. Valabik is pretty much a flier in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Valabik still missing time

News: Atlanta D Boris Valabik (shoulder) missed his fifth straight game with a shoulder injury on Wednesday against the Sabres. He remains questionable for Friday at Florida.
Analysis: As a Fantasy player used mostly as an enforcer by the Thrashers, Valabik has little Fantasy value. He lacks offensive prowess and should only be used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for penalty minutes. As an injury risk for the time being, Valabik should be inactive in Fantasy play.

Valabik sits out again Saturday

News: Thrashers D Boris Valabik (shoulder) did not return to the lineup Saturday against the Senators. He has missed the last four games and remains questionable for Tuesday against the Sabres.
Analysis: Valabik is a player that is used as an enforcer and does little else. He has little offensive prowess and should only be used in leagues that reward heavily for PIM when healthy. He should be thought of as an injury risk for the upcoming scoring period.
