Canadiens Lose Dawes

News: Dawes signed with Barys Astana of the Kontinental Hockey League in Russia, the Montreal Gazette reports.
Analysis: The Canadiens lose some organizational depth at forward. Dawes came to Montreal in the trade deadline deal with the Thrashers that also landed them Brent Sopel. Dawes saw some action with the Canadiens, but made more of a mark with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL, potting 14 goals and 14 assists in 19 games.

Montreal Sends Dawes To AHL

News: Montreal assigned Dawes to the AHL on Thursday, Toronto Globe & Mail writer James Mirtle reports.
Analysis: Dawes heading back to the AHL could indicate that Tomas Plekanec (lower body) or Mathieu Darche (groin) could be nearing return. In any case, Dawes is unlikely to make much of an impact in the future, as he has just one point in nine games.

Dawes Scores In Shootout In Montreal Debut

News: Dawes, making his debut with the Habs, skated less than six minutes Thursday, but was the first man called upon in the shootout and beat Dwayne Roloson to help put Montreal over the top.
Analysis: Dawes has been a point-per-game scorer in the AHL this year, but has never been able to stick on top lines at the NHL level. It seems Montreal may be using him as a sort of shootout specialist while he's in the lineup.

Habs Recall Dawes From AHL Hamilton

News: The Canadiens have recalled Dawes from AHL Hamilton, ESPN'S Pierre LeBrun reports.
Analysis: Dawes was called up along with Aaron Palushaj as extra insurance in case centers Tomas Plekanec and/or Jeff Halpern prove unfit to play Thursday night against the Lightning due to lower-body injuries.

Dawes Traded To Montreal

News: The Canadiens have obtained Dawes and Brent Sopel from the Thrashers for Ben Maxwell and a fourth-round draft choice, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: Dawes has spent most of this season in the AHL, but he has played 208 NHL games (including nine this season, recording an assist) in his career, so he gives the Habs' some experienced depth up front.

Thrashers Demote Dawes

News: The Thrashers have re-assigned Dawes to AHL Chicago, Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Dawes has just one assist in nine games for the Thrashers to date, so this nugget shouldn't affect too many fantasy lineups.

Dawes Recalled By Thrashers

News: The Thrashers have recalled Dawes from AHL Chicago, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Dawes has just one point in nine games with the big club thus far, but with Alexander Burmistrov and Fredrik Modin having landed on IR, the Thrashers need some depth up front.

Thrasher's Dawes Sent Down

News: Dawes was sent to AHL Chicago by the Thrashers on Friday, Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Dawes will get some extra work in over the All-Star Break, but he'll probably be back in Atlanta early next week.

Thrashers Recall Dawes

News: The Thrashers recalled Dawes from AHL Chicago on Wednesday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Dawes has 36 points (21G, 15A) in 40 games with Chicago this season. The Thrashers are a bit banged up in front, so Dawes could see some ice time over the next couple games.

Thrashers Waive Dawes

News: The Thrashers placed Dawes on waivers Thursday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Dawes notched a game-winning shootout goal last Friday, but he didn't have much fantasy value and the Thrashers wanted to get down to 13 forwards.

Thrashers' Dawes Downs Ducks Friday In Shootout

News: Dawes was the only player on either team to score in the shootout Friday, giving the Thrashers a 5-4 win over the Ducks.
Analysis: While the shootout goal may boost Dawes' confidence, it doesn't mean much for his fantasy value.

Dawes signs two-way contract

News: Dawes signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Thrashers, SportingNews.com reports.
Analysis: Dawes, a fifth round pick in 2003, notched 14 goals and 18 assists in a stint with the Calgary Flames last season and will provide depth in Atlanta.

Dawes makes his return from IR

News: Calgary activated LW Nigel Dawes (leg) and RW David Moss (shoulder) from injured reserve on Saturday against the Ducks and they played on a line centered by rookie Mikael Backlund. Dawes had an assist and finished at even in 14:10 of ice time. Moss had no points in 13:46 and spent two minutes in the penalty box.
Analysis: Dawes has an assist in four of his last seven games, but he hasn't scored since Dec. 17. Dawes played pretty well through the first two months of the season and it looked as though he could have his breakout run in the NHL. Unfortunately, Calgary began to struggle as a team and it began to show in Dawes' numbers. He remains a low-end Fantasy flier.

Dawes back practicing again

News: The Calgary Herald reports that Flames LW Nigel Dawes (leg) practiced Monday in a non-contact jersey for the first time since being injured on Jan. 21. "We’ve got to get a few practices under him," coach Brent Sutter said. "How many that is, who knows? It’s a good sign that he’s fully practicing now."
Analysis: Dawes might be back later this week, but the fact he's still not allowed to take contact yet suggests a post-Olympic return is more likely. When healthy, Dawes only has value in deeper Fantasy leagues.

Dawes (leg) placed on IR

News: The Flames have placed LW Nigel Dawes on injured reserve with a leg injury.
Analysis: Dawes got hurt on Thursday, and he'll have to wait a little longer to set a new points high. He's only four behind his best of 29, but remains just a low-end option in deeper leagues when healthy. Bench him for Fantasy Week 17 (Jan. 25-31).

Nigel Dawes

Dawes bows out with injury

News: The Sports Xchange reports Flames LW Nigel Dawes was injured in the first period on Thursday against the Blackhawks after being hit into the boards by Chicago captain Jonathan Toews and didn't return. Dawes has struggled to score over the past month, but has 10 goals on the season.
Analysis: Dawes has not scored since Dec. 17 and has only two goals in his last 25 appearances. It's been a disappointing run for Dawes after he was such a great fit earlier in the year for Calgary. Until Dawes becomes more of an offensive threat, he is still a low-end Fantasy flier.

Dawes contributes goal in win

News: Miikka Kiprusoff made 34 saves, and Dion Phaneuf and Nigel Dawes scored in the Calgary Flames' 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. In the third period, Kings defenseman Alex Martinez had his clearing attempt intercepted and the Flames eventually worked the puck in deep to Daymond Langkow, who set up Dawes for a one-timer for his 10th goal of the season. It was Dawes' second score in five contests.
Analysis: Dawes has managed 10 goals in three straight seasons, but this is the fastest he has gotten to that mark. Dawes is well on his way to having a career season with the Flames. He is a nice option from the left side of the ice. However, until Dawes becomes more of an offensive threat, he is still a low-end Fantasy flier.

Nigel Dawes, LW, MON Flames happy with Dawes' production

Nigel Dawes

Flames happy with Dawes' production

News: Flames LW Nigel Dawes scored a goal for a fourth straight game Monday against the Predators. Jarome Iginla passed the puck from the right side along the extended goal line. Dawes, stationed in front of the crease, took a couple of swipes at it before putting it past Pekka Rinne, again to his right side. "Nigel is getting in those areas to score goals," coach Brent Sutter said. "He is just playing a really intelligent game. He has found some consistency and has certainly taken his game to a level that we would like to see him play at every night."
Analysis: Dawes is up to eight goals on the season and is only six away from tying his career high. He has 16 points in 26 games and is proving to be a great free-agent addition for Calgary. Dawes never settled into a rhythm with the Rangers despite the team feeling he was a top-six talent. Dawes seems at home with Calgary, but is still a low-end Fantasy start until he shows serious productivity on a regular basis.

Nigel Dawes, LW, MON Dawes scores in third straight game

Nigel Dawes

Dawes scores in third straight game

News: Flames LW Nigel Dawes made it three straight games with a goal as Calgary edged the Blue Jackets on Saturday.
Analysis: Dawes is having a solid 2009-10 season so far with 15 points in 25 games. His career high is only 29, so he's easily on pace to eclipse that mark. Continue to use him in deeper leagues.

Nigel Dawes, LW, MON Dawes assists three times in win

Nigel Dawes

Dawes assists three times in win

News: Flames LW Nigel Dawes assisted on all three goals Saturday as Calgary defeated the Rangers 3-1.
Analysis: Dawes is off to a great start this season with 10 points already, after finishing last year with 21 points in 64 games. Dawes is more of a low-end Fantasy forward for now, but is definitely a player to watch in deeper formats.

10/25/2009

Nigel Dawes, LW, MON Dawes scores twice in win

Nigel Dawes

Dawes scores twice in win

News: Nigel Dawes scored twice, and Miikka Kiprusoff made 23 saves in the Calgary Flames' 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night. Calgary took its first lead at 3:53 when Dawes got open behind defenseman Theo Peckham and had an empty net as Rene Bourque neatly set him up from behind the net. Dawes capped the scoring with a power play tally in the third.
Analysis: Dawes has four goals in his first 10 games with the Flames. He has been seeing regular top-six minutes and appears on his way to a breakout season. The Rangers were really excited about Dawes' potential when he was in their system, but he just never seemed to get on track. Dawes is more of a low-end Fantasy forward, but is definitely a player to watch in deeper formats.

Nigel Dawes

Dawes signs contract with Flames

News: The Flames signed Nigel Dawes to a contract Monday, days after claiming him off waivers from the Phoenix Coyotes. Dawes has 51 points in 133 NHL games between the Rangers and Coyotes.
Analysis: The Rangers had high hopes for Dawes entering the 2008-09 season and thought he could possibly star as a top-six forward. That never really happened and he was eventually traded to Phoenix at the deadline. He totaled 19 points (10 goals) in 52 games with the Rangers and two points (both assists) in 12 games with Phoenix. Dawes has scoring potential, but is merely a Fantasy sleeper for deeper formats Draft Day.

Nigel Dawes

Dawes assists on game-winning goal

News: Scottie Upshall scored Phoenix's first goal and Nigel Dawes assisted on the winner Thursday night as the revamped Coyotes beat the Bruins 2-1 to send the Eastern Conference leaders to their ninth loss in 12 games. Steve Reinprecht gave the Coyotes the lead with 12:08 left in the second when he tipped a pass from Dawes past Tim Thomas.
Analysis: Dawes is set to become a restricted free agent in the offseason, but Phoenix might be forced to offer him a decent contract because he is a promising young talent. The Rangers came into the season with high hopes for Dawes and figured he would crack the rotation as a top-six forward. That wasn't the case. He managed just 10 goals and nine assists in 52 games and was even a healthy scratch at times. Dawes gets a fresh start with Phoenix and is already making a good impression. However, he still has minimal Fantasy appeal until his breakout run.

Dawes has new home with Phoenix

News: The Rangers were busy at the trade deadline Wednesday by not only acquiring forward Nik Antropov, but also picking up Derek Morris in a trade with the Coyotes. The Rangers are sending defenseman Dmitri Kalinin, forward Nigel Dawes and forward Petr Prucha to Phoenix.
Analysis: The Rangers came into the season with high hopes for Dawes and figured he would crack the rotation as a top-six forward. That wasn't the case. He managed just 10 goals and nine assists in 52 games and was even a healthy scratch at times. Dawes is headed for free agency in the offseason, so he could just be a rental with Phoenix. He still has minimal Fantasy appeal at this time.

Dawes scores off of Danis

News: Rangers LW Nigel Dawes scored the first goal of the game against the Islanders on Wednesday off of Yann Danis with a snap shot less than six minutes into the game. It was his ninth goal of the season to go with nine assists.
Analysis: Dawes has been rather quiet lately, with his last goal coming against the same Islanders team on Jan. 13 before scoring again on Wednesday. He has been extremely ineffective of late and is only a very low-end option despite the goal.
