Caps Need Green To Be

News: Head coach Adam Oates said he needs Mike Green (ribs) to be "more consistent hockey player," CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Mike Green sat out the last couple of games with an apparent rib injury, and missed 12 games with various ailments this season (which is actually an improvement for the oft-injured defenseman). It's not clear how much the injuries factored into the inconsistent play to which Oates alluded, but Green continues to struggle to regain the form from earlier in his career that made him an elite offensive defenseman. Oates referred to Green as an "enigma" and wanted Green to "play correct" on a nightly basis. Green appears to be have been supplanted by John Carlson on the team's top power-play unit, and will need to refine his game to earn back those coveted minutes. Still, the two-time Norris Trophy finalist has as much offensive upside as Ottawa's Erik Karlsson or Montreal's PK Subban. If he can stay healthy and be more consistent, he may ultimately return to the rarefied atmosphere of fantasy stud. Keep him on your radar heading into next season's drafts.

Caps' Green Sidelined

News: Mike Green (upper body) won't travel with the Caps for their next two road contests, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: It remains to be seen, however, if Mike Green might rejoin the lineup when the team returns home over the weekend for their final two games of the regular season.

Caps' Green Misses Practice

News: Mike Green (upper body) didn't practice Monday, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Consider Mike Green, who has recorded 38 points in 70 games to date, day-to-day as Tuesday's game against the Blues approaches.

Capitals' Green Out Saturday

News: Mike Green left Saturday's game in the first period with an upper-body injury, and he is questionable to return, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports. Green did not come out for the start of the second period.
Analysis: Mike Green's been rather quiet of late, tallying just two points (both assists) over the last 10 games. His 172 shots on goal have led to just nine marks this season, and his plus/minus sits at minus-16.

Green Ends Drought In Caps Win

News: Mike Green posted his first point in four games, bagging the game-winning goal in Friday's 4-3 victory over Vancouver.
Analysis: Mike Green has been one of the more frustrating players to own as he has disappeared for games on end this season. In the four games leading up to Friday, Green was a minus-4 and didn't see power-play time in two of them. We know he has the potential to produce, but whether he will is another question.

Assists Piling Up For Caps' Green

News: Mike Green supplied two assists in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Flyers.
Analysis: Wednesday's performance gives Mike Green five assists over his last two games. An ugly minus-3 rating Wednesday worked to partially negate his point production, but with few defensemen possessing the scoring aptitude Green offers, fantasy owners can probably stomach the plus-minus hit.

Caps' Green Dishes Out Three In OT Loss

News: Mike Green assisted on three of the Capitals' four goals in an overtime loss to the Flyers.
Analysis: The three helpers marked Mike Green's first points since returning from a concussion Feb. 27. Green's point-per-game average has fallen from 0.74 in 2012-13 to 0.61 this season, but he's still performing well enough to justify a roster spot in most leagues.

Caps' Green To Play Thursday

News: Mike Green (concussion) will be in the lineup Thursday against the Panthers, Adam Vignan of NBC Washington reports.
Analysis: Mike Green received clearance for full contact when the Capitals resumed practicing last week, and after hitting no snags in his recovery since that time, he'll be back in on defense. It will be the first game since Jan. 30 for Green, who has seven goals and 23 assists in 51 games.

Caps' Green Passes Concussion Tests

News: Mike Green (concussion) has passed his neurological test and expects to play in the Capitals' first game after the break against the Panthers, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green has not played since Jan. 30 after taking a hit to the head from the Blue Jackets' Boone Jenner, but it seems the lengthy Olympic break has given him adequate recovery time. He'll try to get some conditioning back during the upcoming week of practice and should be ready for his regular allotment of minutes when games resume.

Caps' Green Out For Saturday

News: Mike Green (concussion) will not play Saturday against the Devils, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green was able to skate at Friday's practice, but the team will give him the entire three-week break to recover from the concussion. Assuming he hits no setbacks during the break, look for him to be back in the lineup Feb. 27 against the Panthers.

Capitals' Green Practices Friday

News: Mike Green (concussion) skated at Friday's practice, Katie Carrera of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: With a history of conucssion issues, the team is being cautious with Mike Green since he suffered a concussion during a January 30 loss in Columbus. He has been ruled out of action until after the upcoming Olympic break by the coaching staff. If the Capitals are to make the playoffs this season, they will need Green healthy, as they have to endure one of the NHL's toughest schedules to close out the season. Green has seven goals and 23 assists in 51 games this season.

Caps' Green Remains Out

News: Mike Green (concussion) won't play Thursday against the Jets, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: With John Erskine out as well, Julien Brouillette and Patrick Wey are slated to fill in on the Caps' blue line Thursday night.

Caps' Green Still Out

News: Mike Green (concussion) won't play Tuesday against the Islanders, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: At this point, it's looking like Mike Green may not play again until after the Olympics. "It looks that way," coach Adam Oates noted when asked if Green might miss the Caps' final two games before the Olympic break as well. "I can't guarantee it, but it looks that way."

Capitals' Green May Be Out For A While

News: Capitals bench-boss Adam Oates told Katie Carrera that Mike Green (concussion) may not play again until after the Olympic break, The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green seemed to be on the fast track to recovery before he was held out of Sunday afternoon's game against Detroit. He skated for only ten minutes of Monday's practice, and the feeling seems to be that the Capitals are being extra cautious with Green, who has a history of concussions. In his absence, John Carlson should continue to fill in on the top power-play with Dmitri Orlov and Connor Carrick getting time on the team's second unit. This news does not bode well for Green's chances of playing Tuesday night against the Islanders.

Caps' Green Not At Morning Skate

News: Mike Green (concussion) did not skate with his teammates Tuesday morning, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The Caps haven't ruled Mike Green out yet for Tuesday's game against the Islanders, but his absence from the team's morning skate does not bode well for his chances of suiting up in that contest.

Caps' Green Gets In Light Practice Monday

News: Mike Green (concussion) was a limited participant in Monday's practice, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green skated for about 10 minutes before he left the ice and retreated to the locker room. Though the Capitals haven't announced his status for Tuesday's game against the Islanders, he would appear doubtful to play, given that it seems he has yet to be cleared for full contact. The Capitals could simply opt to keep him out through the Olympic break in the hope that he's sufficiently recovered by the time play resumes.

Caps' Green Sits On Sunday

News: Mike Green (head) did not play Sunday against the Red Wings.
Analysis: Mike Green, who hasn't played since the first period of this past Thursday's loss to Columbus, thus remains in the day-to-day category in advance of Tuesday's game against the Islanders.

Capitals' Coach Expects Green Will Play Sunday

News: Capitals head coach Adam Oates expects Mike Green (head) will play in Sunday's afternoon game against the Red Wings, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green practiced with the team on Saturday and said he "felt a lot better today as opposed to the last two days," Janes notes. Oates noted that the team and Green still have to go through the league's concussion protocol and they will see how Green feels Sunday morning before making the call. This is welcome news as Green missed 20 games with a concussion in 2011. Green was coming off a two-goal, three-point night in Buffalo when he was injured, so the offensive defenseman should definitely be in your lineup if he is in fact given the go-ahead from the medical staff.

Capitals' Green Practices Saturday

News: Mike Green (head) is on the ice for Satuday's practice, the Washington Capitals report.
Analysis: Mike Green is reportedly undergoing the NHL's concussion protocols after his head hit the boards in Friday's 5-2 loss against Columbus. There is no timetable for his return, however his presence on the ice for practice so soon after the incident is at the least an encouraging sign that his absence from the lineup may not be as long as originally feared. The situation is worth monitoring.

Caps' Green Going Through Concussion Protocol

News: Capitals coach Adam Oates confirmed that Mike Green (head) is currently going through the league's mandated concussion protocol, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green was leveled by a hit from Columbus' Boone Jenner Thursday night and left the game. He did not take part in warmups and was considered a game-time decision before official reports of a concussion were released. He is still being considered day-to-day.

Capitals' Green Out Friday

News: Mike Green (upper body) was not present for warm-ups and will not play in Friday's game against the Red Wings, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green was expected to be a game-time decision and has opted not to play Friday. He will be considered day-to-day moving forward.

Capitals' Green Remains Uncertain For Friday

News: Mike Green will be a game-time decision for Friday's game against the Red Wings due to an upper body injury suffered Thursday, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green's status is in doubt as a result of big hit levied on him in Thursday's game, and it looks like a final decision on whether or not he plays will not be made until just before the first puck is dropped.

Caps' Green To Be Evaluated Friday

News: Mike Green, who left Thursday's game with an undisclosed injury, will travel to Detroit for Friday's game, and his status will be re-evaluated Friday. Katie Carrera of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green took a big hit in the first period Thursday and never returned to the game. It's a good sign that he's traveling with the team, so Green can be considered questionable for Friday's game. With minimal time to rest, he probably isn't a great bet to play, despite the positive postgame news Thursday night.

Capitals' Green Leaves During First Period

News: Mike Green has returned to the Capitals locker room after a heavy hit along the boards from Blue Jackets forward Boone Jenner, Katie Carrera of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The nature and severity of the injury are unknown, but Mike Green's head appeared to make contact with the boards as Boone Jenner was following through with the hit. Green has a history of concussions, most notably a 20 game absence during the 2010-2011 NHL season. The situation is certainly worth monitoring closely. Green has seven goals and 23 assists in 50 games this season.

Caps' Green: Three Points, Including OT Winner

News: Mike Green scored two goals -- the second being the overtime winner -- and added an assist in Tuesday's 5-4 triumph over Buffalo.
Analysis: The goals were Mike Green's first since a two-score effort back on Jan. 4; those two games account for 57 percent of his seven goals in what's been a disappointing campaign. He's got four points and a plus-5 rating in his last two games, but fantasy owners are still waiting for more offensive consistency from the one-time superstar.
