Caps' Green Gets First Points Since Return

News: Mike Green assisted on Troy Brouwer's late-third-period game-tying goal and Eric Fehr's overtime winner Thursday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: The points were his first in four games since returning from a lower-body injury, but his slump goes back to before the injury, as he hadn't been on the scoresheet since Nov. 15 (a span of six scoreless games) and remains without a goal since way back on Oct. 22. As has been the norm for Mike Green the last few years, it's been an injury-plagued season with flashes of offensive talent muted by near-constant physical ailments.

Capitals' Green To Play Thursday

News: Mike Green (upper body) has been activated from IR and will play Thursday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Mike Green will take the ice Thursday for the first time since Nov. 22. Health remains an issue for him, but he did tally 12 points in 19 games earlier this season and is not universally owned in fantasy leagues, so he is worthy of a look if you are in need of help on the defensive end.

Caps' Green Won't Play Tuesday

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play Tuesday against the Lightning, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The team described Mike Green as very close to returning, but he won't make the trip Tampa Bay with the team. The blueliner racked up three goals and nine assists in 19 games when healthy.

Caps' Green Will Not Play Saturday

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play Saturday against the Devils, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green was on the ice for Friday's practice and looks to be nearing a return, but the Capitals just want to give him a little extra time to heal up before turning him loose. He's targeting an activation in advance of Tuesday's game in Tampa.

Caps' Green Not Playing Thursday, But On Ice

News: Mike Green (upper body) skated during the Capitals' morning session Thursday, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green won't play Thursday against the Hurricanes, but the Capitals are optimistic that he'll be available for one or both of the final two games of the road trip. Coach Barry Trotz categorized Green's session as a "feel-out day," with a tougher test to come Friday when he starts shooting pucks again.

Green To Travel With Caps

News: Mike Green (upper body) will travel with the Capitals on their three-game road trip beginning Thursday in Carolina, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green won't be an option for the initial game of the road trip Thursday, but he could resume skating with the Capitals at that time. If all goes well and he's able to get in a full practice Friday, he could warrant consideration for a return to the lineup Saturday versus the Devils.

Caps' Green Out Again Tuesday

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play against Vancouver on Tuesday, The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green worked out on his own Monday morning prior to the team's practice. Head coach Barry Trotz expressed optimism about the possibility of having Green return to the lineup before the end of the week.

Capitals Place Green On IR

News: Mike Green (upper-body) has been placed on the injured reserve list, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: The move frees up a roster space for Steven Oleksy, who was recalled from AHL Hershey on Saturday. Mike Green, who has missed the Capitals' last two games with the ailment, had 12 points in 19 games for the Capitals this season, and should be a solid defenseman once he returns to the lineup, but the 29-year-old has a long and sordid injury history so continue to monitor his progress.

Caps' Green To Sit Again Friday

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play Friday against the Islanders, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Jack Hillen will spell him in the Capitals' lineup for the second straight game. It hasn't been reported that Mike Green has resumed skating since suffering the injury, so it's not clear when he might rejoin the lineup.

Caps' Green Ruled Out Wednesday

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play Wednesday against the Islanders, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green was unable to practice for the second straight day Tuesday, prompting coach Barry Trotz to rule him out for Wednesday's contest. The 29-year-old rearguard, who has 12 points in 19 games this season, will likely be replaced in the lineup by Jack Hillen.

Caps' Green Not Skating Monday

News: Mike Green (upper body) did not skate Monday morning, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green left Saturday's game with the injury, and looks like he won't be available Wednesday against the Islanders. Considering how injury-prone Green has been throughout his career, fantasy owners should be keeping a close eye on his recovery moving forward.

Caps' Green Suffers Upper-Body Injury

News: Mike Green suffered an upper-body injury in Saturday's game against Buffalo and will not return.
Analysis: The Capitals are listing Mike Green as day-to-day, so hopefully this is a minor ailment. Fortunately for Green, the Caps have the next three days off before returning to action Wednesday against the Islanders.

Caps' Green Picks Up Assist

News: Mike Green assisted on the Capitals' lone goal in Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Blues.
Analysis: Mike Green has gone without a goal for 11 games, but he's still been picking up helpers with enough regularity to remain valuable for his fantasy owners. The 29-year-old blueliner has 12 points over 16 games on the season.

Capitals' Green Dishes Out Two Assists

News: Mike Green dished out a pair of assists in Sunday's loss to Vancouver.
Analysis: As long as he remains healthy, Mike Green has great offensive potential on the blueline. Through seven games, Green looks rejuvenated, recording three goals and eight points, to go with a plus-6 rating. He is showing signs of the 70-point player he was in 2008-09 and 2009-10. Fantasy owners should take advantage.

Caps' Green Rolling To Start Campaign

News: Mike Green found the back of the net in Wednesday's loss to the Oilers.
Analysis: Mike Green has looked like the high-scoring blueliner of yore in the early stages of the season, as he's already posted three goals and three assists over five games. Injuries are a perpetual concern for the blueliner, but when he's healthy, few defensemen in the league offer as much offensive upside.

Caps' Green Notches Two Helpers

News: Mike Green picked up a pair of assists in Thursday's win over the Devils.
Analysis: Though he's already missed a game to injury, Mike Green's been terrifically productive when on the ice, having racked up five points and a plus-3 rating through three games. The sledding's been tough for the injury-prone blueliner over the last few years, but it's clear that his skills haven't faded -- at least, when he's healthy.

Caps' Green Tallies Goal, Assist In Tuesday's Loss

News: Mike Green notched a goal, an assist, and attempted three shots in Tuesday's 6-5 shootout loss to San Jose.
Analysis: The former Norris Trophy candidate is off to a solid start to the season despite playing slightly reduced minutes after the arrival of Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik in free agency this summer. Given his inconsistency, and perhaps more importantly his injury history, Mike Green is a boom or bust type of fantasy defenseman. As long as he's healthy and getting power-play time with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, he's worth playing every night.

Caps' Green Pots Goal In Return

News: Mike Green (upper body) notched a goal in his return to the ice Saturday against the Bruins.
Analysis: The puck-moving blueliner vaulted the Capitals to a 3-0 lead on a one-timer past goalie Tuukka Rask, while the team was riding the man-advantage. The upper-body injury sidelined Mike Green for only one game, but health is an annual concern for the 29-year-old. He should still rank among the better fantasy producers at his position on a per-game basis.

Caps' Green (Upper Body) Expected Back Saturday

News: Mike Green (upper body) was on the ice for morning skate and appears set to return to make his season debut Saturday vs. the Bruins, Alan May of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Though Mike Green was generally expected to play in Thursday's opener, his upper-body injury proved more problematic than initially thought, resulting in his being scratched. It appears he's since made progress in the last two days, which should allow him to slot back in on the team's third pairing next to Nate Schmidt. Green is expected to take a back seat in ice time this season following the July additions of Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik in free agency, but he should still offer above-average offense from the blue line when healthy.

Caps' Green Still Questionable For Saturday

News: Mike Green (upper body) is questionable to play Saturday against the Bruins, the Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Fortunately for Mike Green's fantasy owners, it looks like there should be a verification of his status one way or the other after Saturday's morning skate. If Green plays Saturday, he would likely displace Nate Schmidt from the lineup.

Capitals' Green Out For Opener

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play in Thursday's game against the Canadiens.
Analysis: Head coach Barry Trotz said Mike Green is close to playing, but he is not healthy enough to suit up for Thursday's season opener. Nate Schmidt will enter the lineup in Green's place.

Caps' Green A Likely Game-Time Decision

News: Mike Green (upper body) will likely be a game-time decision for Thursday's opener versus the Canadiens, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green practiced Wednesday without a non-contact jersey and seems more likely than not to play, but coach Barry Trotz said there's still a chance the defenseman could be held out at the last minute as a precaution. If the Caps decide to send Green to the press box, Nat Schmidt would likely join Jack Hillen on the third defensive pairing.

Caps' Green Progressing

News: Mike Green (upper body) is close to being fully recovered from injury, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports. "We'll see where he is [Wednesday], so we can make some decisions on that."
Analysis: There's still a chance that Mike Green could be out for Thursday's opener against the Canadiens, but if that's the case, it doesn't appear likely he'd miss much time beyond that. The Capitals have kept two extra defensemen on their 23-man roster as insurance for Green's possible unavailability Thursday.

Caps' Green Out For Final Preseason Tilt

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play in the Capitals' final preseason game Sunday against the Hurricanes, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: On a positive note, Mike Green was able to take part in practice with his teammates Thursday, suggesting a return to the ice for the Oct. 9 regular-season opener with the Habs is still in the cards. The offseason signing of Matt Niskanen could cut into Green's offensive responsibilities this season, but his point-per-game production should still be above average by defenseman standards.

Capitals' Green (Upper Body) Returns To Practice

News: Mike Green (upper body) resumed regular practice with his teammates on Thursday, but is still questionable to play in either of the Capitals' final preseason games, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green has been off the ice since Saturday, but his return to practice confirms that the injury doesn't appear to be significant. Although the Caps will likely be cautious with Green and not play him the remainder of preseason, he appears to be expected to return to the lineup for next Thursday's regular season opener against Montreal.
