Caps' Green Picks Up Assist

News: Mike Green assisted on the Capitals' lone goal in Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Blues.
Analysis: Mike Green has gone without a goal for 11 games, but he's still been picking up helpers with enough regularity to remain valuable for his fantasy owners. The 29-year-old blueliner has 12 points over 16 games on the season.

Capitals' Green Dishes Out Two Assists

News: Mike Green dished out a pair of assists in Sunday's loss to Vancouver.
Analysis: As long as he remains healthy, Mike Green has great offensive potential on the blueline. Through seven games, Green looks rejuvenated, recording three goals and eight points, to go with a plus-6 rating. He is showing signs of the 70-point player he was in 2008-09 and 2009-10. Fantasy owners should take advantage.

Caps' Green Rolling To Start Campaign

News: Mike Green found the back of the net in Wednesday's loss to the Oilers.
Analysis: Mike Green has looked like the high-scoring blueliner of yore in the early stages of the season, as he's already posted three goals and three assists over five games. Injuries are a perpetual concern for the blueliner, but when he's healthy, few defensemen in the league offer as much offensive upside.

Caps' Green Notches Two Helpers

News: Mike Green picked up a pair of assists in Thursday's win over the Devils.
Analysis: Though he's already missed a game to injury, Mike Green's been terrifically productive when on the ice, having racked up five points and a plus-3 rating through three games. The sledding's been tough for the injury-prone blueliner over the last few years, but it's clear that his skills haven't faded -- at least, when he's healthy.

Caps' Green Tallies Goal, Assist In Tuesday's Loss

News: Mike Green notched a goal, an assist, and attempted three shots in Tuesday's 6-5 shootout loss to San Jose.
Analysis: The former Norris Trophy candidate is off to a solid start to the season despite playing slightly reduced minutes after the arrival of Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik in free agency this summer. Given his inconsistency, and perhaps more importantly his injury history, Mike Green is a boom or bust type of fantasy defenseman. As long as he's healthy and getting power-play time with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, he's worth playing every night.

Caps' Green Pots Goal In Return

News: Mike Green (upper body) notched a goal in his return to the ice Saturday against the Bruins.
Analysis: The puck-moving blueliner vaulted the Capitals to a 3-0 lead on a one-timer past goalie Tuukka Rask, while the team was riding the man-advantage. The upper-body injury sidelined Mike Green for only one game, but health is an annual concern for the 29-year-old. He should still rank among the better fantasy producers at his position on a per-game basis.

Caps' Green (Upper Body) Expected Back Saturday

News: Mike Green (upper body) was on the ice for morning skate and appears set to return to make his season debut Saturday vs. the Bruins, Alan May of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Though Mike Green was generally expected to play in Thursday's opener, his upper-body injury proved more problematic than initially thought, resulting in his being scratched. It appears he's since made progress in the last two days, which should allow him to slot back in on the team's third pairing next to Nate Schmidt. Green is expected to take a back seat in ice time this season following the July additions of Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik in free agency, but he should still offer above-average offense from the blue line when healthy.

Caps' Green Still Questionable For Saturday

News: Mike Green (upper body) is questionable to play Saturday against the Bruins, the Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Fortunately for Mike Green's fantasy owners, it looks like there should be a verification of his status one way or the other after Saturday's morning skate. If Green plays Saturday, he would likely displace Nate Schmidt from the lineup.

Capitals' Green Out For Opener

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play in Thursday's game against the Canadiens.
Analysis: Head coach Barry Trotz said Mike Green is close to playing, but he is not healthy enough to suit up for Thursday's season opener. Nate Schmidt will enter the lineup in Green's place.

Caps' Green A Likely Game-Time Decision

News: Mike Green (upper body) will likely be a game-time decision for Thursday's opener versus the Canadiens, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green practiced Wednesday without a non-contact jersey and seems more likely than not to play, but coach Barry Trotz said there's still a chance the defenseman could be held out at the last minute as a precaution. If the Caps decide to send Green to the press box, Nat Schmidt would likely join Jack Hillen on the third defensive pairing.

Caps' Green Progressing

News: Mike Green (upper body) is close to being fully recovered from injury, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports. "We'll see where he is [Wednesday], so we can make some decisions on that."
Analysis: There's still a chance that Mike Green could be out for Thursday's opener against the Canadiens, but if that's the case, it doesn't appear likely he'd miss much time beyond that. The Capitals have kept two extra defensemen on their 23-man roster as insurance for Green's possible unavailability Thursday.

Caps' Green Out For Final Preseason Tilt

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play in the Capitals' final preseason game Sunday against the Hurricanes, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: On a positive note, Mike Green was able to take part in practice with his teammates Thursday, suggesting a return to the ice for the Oct. 9 regular-season opener with the Habs is still in the cards. The offseason signing of Matt Niskanen could cut into Green's offensive responsibilities this season, but his point-per-game production should still be above average by defenseman standards.

Capitals' Green (Upper Body) Returns To Practice

News: Mike Green (upper body) resumed regular practice with his teammates on Thursday, but is still questionable to play in either of the Capitals' final preseason games, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green has been off the ice since Saturday, but his return to practice confirms that the injury doesn't appear to be significant. Although the Caps will likely be cautious with Green and not play him the remainder of preseason, he appears to be expected to return to the lineup for next Thursday's regular season opener against Montreal.

Capitals' Green To Miss Next Two Preseason Games

News: Head coach Barry Trotz said Mike Green (upper body) would miss the Capitals' next two preseason games but hopes to have him in the lineup for the season opener, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Mike Green (upper body) hasn't practiced since the weekend and given the Calgary native's injury history, Trotz can't be blamed for being cautious with any minor injury having to do with the talented puck-moving defenseman.

Capitals' Green Absent From Tuesday's Practice

News: Mike Green (upper body) did not take part in Tuesday's practice, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Mike Green (upper body) hasn't practiced since Saturday for what head coach Barry Trotz called "maintenance" of an upper body injury. There's no indication this will affect his availability for the start of the regular season season next week, but it's not a good sign for an injury prone player to already be ailing before the season has even begun. Green is a high-risk / high-reward player that will be worth a flier in the mid to late rounds of all formats.

Caps' Green Misses Practice Saturday

News: Mike Green missed Saturday's practice with an upper-body injury, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Coach Barry Trotz said the injury wasn't anything major, describing the absence as being for "maintenance" purposes. Even if Trotz's words prove to be true, there's no denying that Mike Green is historically a liability in the health department, closing the door on his days as an elite fantasy blueliner. However, if you can reconcile his strong per-game scoring totals with the fact that he'll likely miss a good chunk of time, Green can still offer some value at that right price.

Caps Need Green To Be

News: Head coach Adam Oates said he needs Mike Green (ribs) to be "more consistent hockey player," CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Mike Green sat out the last couple of games with an apparent rib injury, and missed 12 games with various ailments this season (which is actually an improvement for the oft-injured defenseman). It's not clear how much the injuries factored into the inconsistent play to which Oates alluded, but Green continues to struggle to regain the form from earlier in his career that made him an elite offensive defenseman. Oates referred to Green as an "enigma" and wanted Green to "play correct" on a nightly basis. Green appears to be have been supplanted by John Carlson on the team's top power-play unit, and will need to refine his game to earn back those coveted minutes. Still, the two-time Norris Trophy finalist has as much offensive upside as Ottawa's Erik Karlsson or Montreal's PK Subban. If he can stay healthy and be more consistent, he may ultimately return to the rarefied atmosphere of fantasy stud. Keep him on your radar heading into next season's drafts.

Caps' Green Sidelined

News: Mike Green (upper body) won't travel with the Caps for their next two road contests, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: It remains to be seen, however, if Mike Green might rejoin the lineup when the team returns home over the weekend for their final two games of the regular season.

Caps' Green Misses Practice

Capitals' Green Out Saturday

News: Mike Green left Saturday's game in the first period with an upper-body injury, and he is questionable to return, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports. Green did not come out for the start of the second period.
Analysis: Mike Green's been rather quiet of late, tallying just two points (both assists) over the last 10 games. His 172 shots on goal have led to just nine marks this season, and his plus/minus sits at minus-16.

Green Ends Drought In Caps Win

News: Mike Green posted his first point in four games, bagging the game-winning goal in Friday's 4-3 victory over Vancouver.
Analysis: Mike Green has been one of the more frustrating players to own as he has disappeared for games on end this season. In the four games leading up to Friday, Green was a minus-4 and didn't see power-play time in two of them. We know he has the potential to produce, but whether he will is another question.

Assists Piling Up For Caps' Green

News: Mike Green supplied two assists in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Flyers.
Analysis: Wednesday's performance gives Mike Green five assists over his last two games. An ugly minus-3 rating Wednesday worked to partially negate his point production, but with few defensemen possessing the scoring aptitude Green offers, fantasy owners can probably stomach the plus-minus hit.

Caps' Green Dishes Out Three In OT Loss

News: Mike Green assisted on three of the Capitals' four goals in an overtime loss to the Flyers.
Analysis: The three helpers marked Mike Green's first points since returning from a concussion Feb. 27. Green's point-per-game average has fallen from 0.74 in 2012-13 to 0.61 this season, but he's still performing well enough to justify a roster spot in most leagues.

Caps' Green To Play Thursday

News: Mike Green (concussion) will be in the lineup Thursday against the Panthers, Adam Vignan of NBC Washington reports.
Analysis: Mike Green received clearance for full contact when the Capitals resumed practicing last week, and after hitting no snags in his recovery since that time, he'll be back in on defense. It will be the first game since Jan. 30 for Green, who has seven goals and 23 assists in 51 games.

Caps' Green Passes Concussion Tests

News: Mike Green (concussion) has passed his neurological test and expects to play in the Capitals' first game after the break against the Panthers, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green has not played since Jan. 30 after taking a hit to the head from the Blue Jackets' Boone Jenner, but it seems the lengthy Olympic break has given him adequate recovery time. He'll try to get some conditioning back during the upcoming week of practice and should be ready for his regular allotment of minutes when games resume.
