Red Wings, Green Reach Three-Year Deal

News: Mike Green signed a three-year, $18 million contract with the Red Wings on Thursday, ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun reports.
Analysis: In need of some more offensive ability from the right side of their defense, the Red Wings decided to make a run at Mike Green, who is perhaps the most accomplished scorer of all the free-agent blueliners. Though injuries have slowed his production in recent years, Green stayed relatively healthy with the Capitals in 2014-15, playing 72 games and tallying 10 goals and 45 points. He saw his ice time decline in Washington as a result of last summer's signing of Matt Niskanen, but the Red Wings should have no trouble clearing out a regular role for Green on their second pairing. He's also a candidate to see time on the second-unit power play, which should help aid him to another 40-point season.

Green Will Not Return to Capitals Next Season

News: Mike Green will not return to the Capitals next season, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Mike Green will test the market when he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He will likely be in for a pretty big payday, as the 29-year-old defender has been a solid offensive contributor throughout his NHL career. He tallied 45 points in 72 games with Washington last season, and will likely go to a team with cap room to spare looking for a boost in offensive production from the blue line.

Caps' Green Gathers Two Points In Win

News: Mike Green factored into both goals -- scoring one and assist on the other in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Red Wings.
Analysis: Mike Green's been on a great stretch lately, collecting five points in his last four contests and potting four goals in his last six. Despite the recent flurry of scoring, the 29-year-old's 10 goals mark just the second time in the past five seasons that he's hit double digits in that department, but he's been able to maintain a solid point pace overall as he's tacked on 35 assists in 70 games.

Caps' Green Breaks out With Big Night

News: Mike Green scored his eighth goal, assisted on another and went plus-3 in Tuesday's 4-2 win over Carolina.
Analysis: Mike Green had managed just two points in his last eight games preceding Tuesday's action, but he's had a terrific campaign on the whole, with 42 points in 67 contests. For the second straight year, though, his goal-scoring has fallen off dramatically from its once-lofty heights. Despite the fact that he's still short of 30 years old, it looks like the injuries Green's suffered over the course of his career have sapped his shooting skills a bit and led the Caps to protect him by limiting his ice time, which is easily at its lowest average since his rookie season.

Mike Green: Scores In Saturday's Loss

News: Mike Green netted a goal in Washington's 4-3 loss to the Predators on Saturday.
Analysis: Mike Green wired a snap shot past Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne just seconds into the third period, but it was not enough to keep the Capitals from dropping Saturday afternoon's decision against Nashville. Green has run cold in 2015, with Saturday's goal only his second since the beginning of February, and he only has 11 points in that span. With the Capitals in danger of missing the playoffs due to sluggish play and other teams hot on their heels, they will need Green to produce more in the coming days. Despite ceding power play time to John Carlson, Green still boasts enough offensive talent to be an every day starter, and hopefully Saturday's goal will reinvigorate his game.

Caps' Green Back In Friday

News: Mike Green (upper body) has been cleared to play Friday against the Stars.
Analysis: Mike Green practiced Thursday and was back on the ice at Friday's morning skate, which was enough for the Capitals to give him the green light to play. Cameron Schilling was returned to AHL Hershey on Friday, further solidifying that Green will suit up as a member of the Caps' third pairing. He missed only one game due to the upper-body injury.

Caps' Green Possible To Play Friday

News: Head coach Barry Trotz indicated Mike Green (upper body) is a possibility for Friday's game against Dallas, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green missed Wednesday's game with the ailment, but practiced without incident on Thursday as a member of the Caps' fourth defensive pairing. Already missing Brooks Orpik (lower body), the Capitals hope their power-play quarterback will be back in the lineup soon as they try to chase down the Islanders, Penguins, and Rangers in the Metropolitan Division standings. Headed for unrestricted free agency this summer, Green is having his best season since 2009-10 with five goals and 28 points (16 on the power play) in 58 games thus far.

Caps' Green To Sit Out Wednesday

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play Wednesday against the Rangers, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Mike Green was on the ice for the Capitals' morning skate and participated in rushes with usual partner Tim Gleason, but the blueliner determined he needed some additional time to recover from the injury. Fortunately, the oft-injured Green doesn't believe the upper-body injury is a major issue, and he's aiming to return to the lineup for either Friday's game against the Stars or Sunday versus the Bruins. Nate Schmidt will fill Green's spot in the lineup Wednesday.

Caps' Green (Upper Body) Day-To-Day

News: Mike Green is day-to-day after aggravating an existing upper-body injury in Saturday's win over the Sabres, the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green can be considered questionable for Wednesday's game against the Rangers, as the Capitals recalled Nate Schmidt from AHL Hershey on an emergency basis. Coach Barry Trotz indicated the Capitals would decide on Green's status for Wednesday's game during the team's morning skate.

Caps' Green Assists Twice In Win

News: Mike Green handed out two assists in Saturday's win over the Sabres.
Analysis: All it took was a matchup with the league-worst Sabres for Mike Green to break a season-long seven-game pointless streak. The 29-year-old hasn't been an elite fantasy option at his position for a while now, but he's probably still deserving of a roster spot in most formats. Green's puck-moving skills are still on display frequently enough, as he's recorded five goals and 33 assists over 58 games this season.

Caps' Green Picks Up Power-Play Assist

News: Mike Green picked up a power-play assist in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Penguins.
Analysis: Mike Green has notched three helpers in his last four games, boosting his total to 30 on the season and surpassing his output from all of 2013-14. The blueliner has dealt with a few bumps and bruises so far this season -- costing him nine games -- but compared to years past, he's done well to stay upright for the most part.

Caps' Green To Return Sunday

News: Mike Green (lower body) was on the ice during warmups and will play Sunday against the Flyers, Mike Vogel of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Mike Green took part in Friday's pregame warmups, but ultimately missed the contest due to a lower-body injury.

Caps' Green Scratched With Lower-Body Injury

News: Mike Green was a late scratch Friday due to a lower-body injury and is considered day-to-day.
Analysis: Mike Green's injury news surfaced just before the game, and it will hold him out of at least Friday's contest. He did take the ice during warmups, but it appears he ultimately didn't feel up to the task. The blueliner's next chance to return is Sunday against the Flyers, but his status should be updated at some point prior to the opening faceoff. Cam Schilling will draw into the lineup Friday in his place.

Caps' Green Tallies Two Assists

News: Mike Green picked up two assists in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Blues.
Analysis: Mike Green has been streaky lately, alternating multi-point efforts with being off the scoresheet entirely over the last seven games. His 31 points are among the league leaders on the blue line, and the 29-year-old is on pace to record his personal best season since his 76 point output in 2009-10.

Caps' Green Nets Two Points In Win

News: Mike Green potted a goal and added a power-play assist in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Penguins.
Analysis: The goal was Mike Green's first since Dec. 20. During that month-plus drought, he's at least made himself useful for fantasy owners by racking up 13 assists, bringing his point total up to 29 for the season in 40 games. If health permits, Green looks like he'll make a push for his first 50-point campaign since 2009-10.

Caps' Green Staying Helpful

News: Mike Green tallied two assists -- one on the power play -- in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime loss to Edmonton.
Analysis: He assisted on both of Alex Ovechkin's goals, giving the Caps an early 2-0 lead that they ended up being unable to hold. Mike Green's been semi-regularly tallying assists lately -- four in his last three games and 10 in his last 11 -- but still hasn't scored a goal since Dec. 20. Hard to complain when he's finding his way into the box score so often though.

Caps' Green Dishes Out Two Assists

News: Mike Green contributed two assists in Friday's loss to Nashville.
Analysis: Mike Green's terrific season continues, as five of his past 14 outings have been multi-point efforts. Averaging 19:04 of ice time and playing on the top power-play unit, Green has managed four goals and 25 points in 36 games on the season. On pace for 50 points, the former 73-point-getter is a must-own in almost all formats.

Caps' Green Piling Up Helpers

News: Mike Green was active in Thursday's overtime loss to the Flyers, assisting on both Washington goals (one on the power play) and putting a season-high six shots on net in just 17:40 of ice time.
Analysis: Mike Green has been a master assistant of late, with six helpers in his last five games, though goals have been a bit harder to come by, as he has just one in the last 27 contests. Still, if he can sustain this level of play on the offensive end of things -- and maintain his health -- Green will be one of the more valuable fantasy defensemen out there.

Caps' Green Claims Two Assists

News: Mike Green captured two assists in Thursday's win over the Blackhawks in the annual Winter Classic.
Analysis: After setting up Alex Ovechkin's first-period tally that gave the Capitals an early 2-0 lead, Mike Green also picked up a secondary helper on Troy Brouwer's game-winner in the final minute. Though he's playing less minutes these days, Green still remains an excellent source of offense from the blue line. He's notched four goals and 16 assists over 29 games.

Caps' Green Assists On Two

News: Mike Green dished out a pair of assists in Monday's 2-1 win over the Senators.
Analysis: Mike Green has been on fire lately with five points in his last three games. He's now got 17 points (four goals) through 25 games after suffering a lower body injury earlier in the season. If the 29-year-old can stay healthy, he should be able to surpass the 40-point mark.

Caps' Green Gets First Points Since Return

News: Mike Green assisted on Troy Brouwer's late-third-period game-tying goal and Eric Fehr's overtime winner Thursday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: The points were his first in four games since returning from a lower-body injury, but his slump goes back to before the injury, as he hadn't been on the scoresheet since Nov. 15 (a span of six scoreless games) and remains without a goal since way back on Oct. 22. As has been the norm for Mike Green the last few years, it's been an injury-plagued season with flashes of offensive talent muted by near-constant physical ailments.

Capitals' Green To Play Thursday

News: Mike Green (upper body) has been activated from IR and will play Thursday against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Mike Green will take the ice Thursday for the first time since Nov. 22. Health remains an issue for him, but he did tally 12 points in 19 games earlier this season and is not universally owned in fantasy leagues, so he is worthy of a look if you are in need of help on the defensive end.

Caps' Green Won't Play Tuesday

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play Tuesday against the Lightning, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The team described Mike Green as very close to returning, but he won't make the trip Tampa Bay with the team. The blueliner racked up three goals and nine assists in 19 games when healthy.

Caps' Green Will Not Play Saturday

News: Mike Green (upper body) will not play Saturday against the Devils, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green was on the ice for Friday's practice and looks to be nearing a return, but the Capitals just want to give him a little extra time to heal up before turning him loose. He's targeting an activation in advance of Tuesday's game in Tampa.

Caps' Green Not Playing Thursday, But On Ice

News: Mike Green (upper body) skated during the Capitals' morning session Thursday, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Mike Green won't play Thursday against the Hurricanes, but the Capitals are optimistic that he'll be available for one or both of the final two games of the road trip. Coach Barry Trotz categorized Green's session as a "feel-out day," with a tougher test to come Friday when he starts shooting pucks again.
