Rangers' Staal Good To Go For Game 1

News: Marc Staal (undisclosed) will be "good to go" for Game 1 of the Rangers' first-round playoff series Thursday against the Penguins, NHL.com's Dan Rosen reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal returned to practice Tuesday and suggested he "felt really good," eliminating any concern about his availability for the playoffs. While his offensive numbers didn't jump off the page (five goals, 20 points in 80 games), Staal led all Rangers blueliners in PIM (42) and ranked second and third in hits (99) and blocks (123), respectively. He's a critical anchor on the team's back end.

Rangers' Staal Back At Practice

News: Marc Staal (undisclosed) practiced Tuesday, Andrew Gross of The Record reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal, who missed the Rangers' last two regular season games with an undisclosed issue, worked on a defensive pairing with Dan Boyle on Tuesday, thus putting him on track to be available for Thursday's playoff opener against the Penguins.

Rangers Rule Staal Out For Saturday

News: Marc Staal (undisclosed) will not play in Saturday's regular-season finale against the Capitals, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: The unspecified injury prevented Marc Staal from practicing Friday, which ended any chance he had at playing Saturday afternoon. The Rangers continue to classify Staal as day-to-day, with coach Alain Vigneault optimistic the blueliner will be available for Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs.

Rangers' Staal Day-To-Day

News: According to coach Alain Vigneault, Marc Staal is day-to-day with an unspecified injury, Andrew Gross of The Record reports.
Analysis: The report notes that Marc Staal took a shoulder-first tumble into the boards Tuesday against the Devils, so the blueliner will sit out Thursday's game against the Sens, as a result.

Rangers Give Staal A Breather

News: Marc Staal is slated to sit out Thursday's game against the Senators, Andrew Gross of The Record reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal, Rick Nash and Mats Zuccarello did not skate with the team Thursday morning, with the trio slated to earn a breather, with the Rangers having already clinched the top playoff seed in the NHL.

Staal Doesn't Miss A Beat In Rangers' Win

News: Marc Staal was a plus-1 in Thursday's win over Ottawa.
Analysis: Although Marc Staal (one assist in his last 11 games) hasn't had much of an impact to fantasy owners in quite some time, surely this comes as a relief to his teammates and coaching staff. After missing practice on Wednesday with what was labeled as a maintenance day and not participating in Thursday's optional practice it's good for everyone to see the 28-year-old stay at home defenseman return to his 21-plus minutes of ice time a game.

Rangers' Staal Continues Contributions

News: Marc Staal registered an assist during Sunday's shootout win over Columbus.
Analysis: Who is this re-invigorated mad man playing on the team's blue line? While his 16 points in 58 games played is no where near his career-high of 29 points in the 2010-11 campaign, Marc Staal has consistently pitched in as of late, posting a goal and five assists in his last seven contests. You may want to consider his services if need be.

Rangers' Staal Provides Help In Win

News: Marc Staal dished out a pair of helpers and went plus-2 during Tuesday's win over the Leafs.
Analysis: A sharp game for the blueliner, who also racked up three hits and four blocked shots. Unfortunately, Marc Staal still owns just 12 points on the season and doesn't often join the rush in his defensively oriented role.

Rangers' Staal Pots Goal In Win

News: Marc Staal potted his third goal of the season in Monday's 6-3 win over the Panthers.
Analysis: Marc Staal has collected three points in his last seven games, an unusually high pace for the 28-year-old. The blueliner recently re-upped with the Rangers on a six-year deal, but his value is much higher for the Blueshirts than for fantasy owners.

Rangers' Staal Signs Extension

News: Marc Staal has agreed to a six-year contract extension with the Rangers worth $5.7 million per season, ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal, who has recorded two goals and six assists in 42 games this season, had been on track to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He's only a factor in deeper fantasy formats, but his steady presence on the team's blue line is clearly valued by the Rangers.

Rangers' Staal Nearing Extension

News: Marc Staal and the Rangers are close to agreeing on a six-year contract extension, ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun reports.
Analysis: The deal is expected to be worth about $5.7 million per year and go into effect immediately, as Marc Staal would otherwise be headed for unrestricted free agency after the season. With only eight points in 42 games on the campaign, Staal isn't an especially prolific defenseman for fantasy purposes, but the Rangers value him for his steady play in his own zone.

Rangers' Staal Plays In 500th Game

News: Marc Staal and the rest of his team was blanked 3-0 by the Islanders on Tuesday.
Analysis: There were some milestones for the now 28-year-old defenseman who played in his 500th NHL game. However, perhaps due to a two minute penalty, for the first time this campaign, Marc Staal logged less than 18-minutes of ice time. In his eight season, it's looking less likely that Staal (seven points in 40 games) will ever approach the 25-point mark again.

Rangers' Staal (Personal) Will Play Saturday

News: Marc Staal (personal) will play Saturday against the Sabres, Andrew Gross of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal was not present at Friday's practice or Saturday's morning skate, having been away from the team attending the funeral of his grandfather, and coach Alain Vigneault expressed some concern about Staal's legs. Apparently, Staal was able to convince Vigneault that he would be fine, as the 27-year-old defenseman took warmups and will be in uniform against Buffalo.

Rangers' Staal A Game-Time Decision Saturday

News: Marc Staal (personal) is a game-time decision for Saturday's tilt with the Sabres, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: While Marc Staal isn't dealing with an injury, he's been away from the team the last two days to tend to a personal matter, and coach Alain Vigneault isn't certain if the blueliner is mentally prepared to play. The presumption is that Staal will remain in the lineup Saturday, but Vigneault likely won't make an official decision on him until after the Rangers complete their pregame warmup.

Rangers' Staal Continuing Slide

News: Marc Staal has been held off the scorer's sheet in 11 straight games.
Analysis: It's fair to say to Marc Staal's fantasy relevance hasn't been the same since the 2010-11 season when he posed 29-points in 77 games. While he's managed to stay healhty, with just four points in 26 games played and no other peripherals to write home about, there's simply no reason to suggest his services at this time.

Rangers' Staal Breaks Slump With Two Helpers

News: Marc Staal ended his 11-game scoring drought Tuesday with a pair of assists in a 5-0 win over Pittsburgh.
Analysis: While Marc Staal still doesn't have a goal this season, his fantasy owners have to be happy with what they can get. Staal has offensive skill, but he's concentrating more on the defensive end right now. As a result, owners in leagues that count hits and blocked shots have been made reasonably happy by the 27-year-old blueliner.

Rangers' Staal Returning To Form?

News: Marc Staal has two points (both assists) in three games this season.
Analysis: Having compiled just 14 points in 72 regular season tilts last season, it's reasonable to speculate the 27-year-old could return to a 20-points-or-more campaign pace. However, we'll wait for a bigger sampling before we make any moves to grab the top-four blue liner from the free agent pool in standard formats.

Rangers' Staal Holding Up

News: Marc Staal logged 33-minutes of total ice time in Saturday's Game 2 loss to Los Angeles.
Analysis: Despite logging goose eggs in points, the 27-year-old was second on the team only to fellow defenseman Ryan McDonagh. With just five points through 22 games, it's obvious Marc Staal's consistent offensive numbers from the blue line are beyond him, but it's good to see he's clearly still capable of eating up top-four minutes.

Rangers' Staal Collects Assist, Poor Rating

News: Marc Staal had an assist in Tuesday's 7-4 loss to Montreal in Game 5.
Analysis: The good news is he broke his three game pointless drought, the bad news is the veteran defenseman posted a very uncharacteristic minus-3 rating. Marc Staal has five points and is a plus-3 overall through 19 postseason games thus far.

Rangers' Staal Has Misleading Night

News: Marc Staal had a hit and a shot on net in Friday's Game 1 overtime defeat of Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Yeah, not exactly busting the boards of fantasy play, but the Ontario native's defensive performance earned him the locker room Broadway Hat, awarded to the team's best player. While Marc Staal is not expected to offensively combust anytime soon, there's a chance he could start garnering more power-play time, especially with the way the team is struggling with the man advantage.

Staal Finds Net In Rangers' Win

News: Marc Staal scored the game's opening goal in a 4-2 win over Philadelphia in Game 5 on Sunday.
Analysis: Marc Staal, who logged an assist in Game 1, picks up his second point of the playoffs and heads into Game 6 with a plus-6 rating. No, he's not seeing much power-play time these days, but he's still a top-4 blue liner for a team that is expected to go deep into the playoffs.

Staal Resumes Playoff Career In Rangers' Win

News: Marc Staal collected an assist in Thursday's 4-1 win over Philadelphia.
Analysis: What a difference a year can make for the veteran defenseman. It was a little over a year ago that Marc Staal had to leave after taking a puck to the eye against the Flyers, then quickly exited his one and only playoff game against the Capitals last season due to a recurrence of symptoms from the injury. The 27-year-old defenseman has five goals and seven assists through 44 career playoff games.

Rangers' Staal Earns Award

News: Marc Staal was given The John Halligan Good Guy Award by the Metro NY/NJ media, reports reports Andrew Gross of The Record.
Analysis: Ironically enough, the award comes on the heels of Marc Staal uncharacteristically leaving the locker room before reporters could question him about a latehit from Chris Neil in Saturday's loss to Ottawa. Obviously, this type of recognition has little impact on Staal's declining offensive production. The veteran, who has been logging more time with stay-at-home defenseman Anton Stralman of late, is minus-3 with three goals and 11 assists in 69 games played this season.

Rangers' Staal Expected To Play Thursday

News: Coach Alain Vigneault said he expects Marc Staal (back) to play Thursday against the Blackhawks, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: After missing a few practices last week with back spasms, Marc Staal returned to the ice Tuesday and hasn't experienced any setbacks since that time. Although Staal is officially a game-time decision, he didn't appear to be limited during the morning skate and can probably safely be penciled in for his usual role on the second pairing with Anton Stralman.

Rangers' Staal Practices

News: Marc Staal (back) was on the ice for Tuesday's practice, Andrew Gross of The Record reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal missed the Rangers' last three practices due to back spasms, but his participation Tuesday offers hope that he could suit up Thursday against the Blackhawks.
