Rangers' Staal Earns Award

News: Marc Staal was given The John Halligan Good Guy Award by the Metro NY/NJ media, reports reports Andrew Gross of The Record.
Analysis: Ironically enough, the award comes on the heels of Marc Staal uncharacteristically leaving the locker room before reporters could question him about a latehit from Chris Neil in Saturday's loss to Ottawa. Obviously, this type of recognition has little impact on Staal's declining offensive production. The veteran, who has been logging more time with stay-at-home defenseman Anton Stralman of late, is minus-3 with three goals and 11 assists in 69 games played this season.

Rangers' Staal Expected To Play Thursday

News: Coach Alain Vigneault said he expects Marc Staal (back) to play Thursday against the Blackhawks, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: After missing a few practices last week with back spasms, Marc Staal returned to the ice Tuesday and hasn't experienced any setbacks since that time. Although Staal is officially a game-time decision, he didn't appear to be limited during the morning skate and can probably safely be penciled in for his usual role on the second pairing with Anton Stralman.

Rangers' Staal Practices

News: Marc Staal (back) was on the ice for Tuesday's practice, Andrew Gross of The Record reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal missed the Rangers' last three practices due to back spasms, but his participation Tuesday offers hope that he could suit up Thursday against the Blackhawks.

Rangers' Staal Misses Practice Again

News: Marc Staal (back spasms) missed practice Saturday for the second day consecutive day, reports Andrew Gross of The Bergen Record.
Analysis: This is surprising news considering Marc Staal did not participate in the Sochi games. Additionally, it's not good news for an organization that's trying to deal UFA Dan Girardi. Gross later tweeted head coach Alain Vigneault has "no long-term" concerns, that Staal needs "just rest and recovery." Consider the veteran defenseman day-to-day for now.

Rangers' Staal To Play Tuesday

News: Marc Staal (personal) will play Tuesday against the Avalanche, Andrew Gross of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal missed the team's Tuesday morning skate due to the birth of his child, but he'll back back with the Rangers in time for the club's 7:00 ET face-off against the Avs.

Rangers' Staal Expected To Play Tuesday

News: Marc Staal (personal) is expected to play Tuesday against the Avalanche, Andrew Gross of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal missed morning skate while attending to the birth of his child, but it sounds like he'll rejoin the team in time for Tuesday's game. The 27-year-old has recorded four of his 10 points on the season in his last three games.

Staal Active In Rangers' Win

News: Marc Staal assisted on two of the Rangers' four goals in Friday's win over the Islanders, giving him four points in the last three games.
Analysis: Marc Staal has four of his season's 10 points over the last three games and has been getting involved more offensively of late. He's not going to light up the scoresheet, but he does have the potential to contribute more. He's more valuable to the Rangers than to most rosters; he's developing into a solid two-way defender.

Rangers' Staal Snaps Out Of Drought

News: Marc Staal was a plus-4 with a goal and an assist in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Devils.
Analysis: If you're still holding onto the once highly regarded veteran, enjoy the spoils. While February usually signals an increase in production for the 27-year-old, the Winter Olympics will put a damper on that silver lining.

Two Assists For Rangers' Staal

News: Marc Staal had two assists in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Blackhawks.
Analysis: The two-point output matched exactly half of the scoring production the defenseman had delivered in his previous 34 games. The legacy of his surname often makes Marc Staal a curiosity for fantasy owners, but his production has never matched the attention he receives.

News: Marc Staal (concussion) was activated from IR on Tuesday, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: It's just confirmation of Monday's news that Marc Staal would return to the lineup for the team's game against the Panthers. Fellow injured blueliner Anton Stralman is also expected to return to the lineup Tuesday, with Michael Del Zotto and Justin Falk likely headed to the press box.

News: Marc Staal (concussion) will return to the lineup in Tuesday's game against the Panthers.
Analysis: Marc Staal will be activated from IR prior to Tuesday's game against the Panthers. He has not played since Dec. 7 due a concussion and declared following Tuesday's practice that he was ready to return. He should be safe to place back in the lineup Tuesday.

Rangers' Staal (Concussion) Could Return Tuesday

News: Marc Staal (concussion) will not play Sunday night, but could be ready for Tuesday's game versus Florida, the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal, who was concussed December 7th, returned to practice just this weekend, so the Rangers will be careful in easing him back into their lineup. It appears New Year's Eve could be the earliest possibility for Staal.

Rangers' Staal Ruled Out Sunday

News: Marc Staal (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Lightning, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal was able to put in his first full practice Saturday since sustaining the concussion Dec. 7, but the team will be careful not to rush him back to action. Still, it appears he's made excellent progress in the last week, and he'll likely be an option at some point in the remaining three games of the Rangers' road trip.

Rangers' Staal Ratchets Up Practice Intensity

News: Marc Staal (concussion) turned in another hard skate Friday morning, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Next up for Marc Staal will be a full practice Saturday. If all goes well, he could be a lineup option as early as Sunday against the Lightning, though a return next week would seem to be a more realistic possibility.

Rangers' Staal Traveling With Team

News: Marc Staal (concussion) will travel with the Rangers on their five-game road trip beginning Friday in Washington, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Everything seems to be trending in the right direction for Marc Staal, who hasn't played since suffering the concussion in a Dec. 7 game. Staal begun ramping up the intensity of his workouts Monday and with a couple more practices, he could be cleared to return from IR at some point during the trip.

Rangers' Staal Increases Workout Intensity

News: Marc Staal (concussion) skated with increased intensity Monday morning.
Analysis: Coach Alain Vigneault said after the session that he was pleased with what he saw from Marc Staal, expressing hope that he could be back in the lineup soon. He'll first need to put a few practices in before fantasy owners should prepare for his return.

Rangers' Staal Resumes Skating

News: Marc Staal (concussion) resumed skating Saturday, Newsday reports.
Analysis: Slowly but surely, Marc Staal is making progress in his recovery from a concussion, stepping back onto the ice Saturday for the first time since suffering the injury. It's uncertain when he may be cleared to practice, but a return to game action does not appear imminent.

Rangers' Staal Gets In Off-Ice Workouts

News: Marc Staal (concussion) has been working out off the ice the last three days.
Analysis: Coach Alain Vigneault described it as conditioning work to keep the defenseman active while he tends to a concussion. Marc Staal can't be considered close to a return until he receives clearance to get back on the ice for practices.

Rangers' Staal Has Concussion

News: Updating a previous item, Marc Staal does have a concussion, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal suffered the hit in Saturday's 4-3 loss to New Jersey. Zipay also reports this concussion is not "as bad as the previous" concussion he suffered last season, and head coach Alain Vigneault stated there is no need to see a concussion specialist in Michigan. Regardless, it looks like the veteran defenseman will get some time off.

Rangers' Staal Out Again Tuesday

News: Marc Staal (neck) will not play Tuesday against the Predators, ESPN's Katie Strang reports.
Analysis: The Rangers haven't provided any sort of indication if Marc Staal is dealing with a concussion, but it appears at the very least, he's still experiencing neck pain. He wasn't on the ice for morning skate and will need to get a practice or two in before the Rangers feel comfortable bringing him back into the fold.

Rangers' Staal Will Not Play Sunday

News: Marc Staal (neck) will not play Sunday against the Capitals, ESPN's Katie Strang reports.
Analysis: This is hardly a surprise, as Marc Staal was forced from Saturday's game after taking a shoulder to his jaw area and did not return. The team is saying Staal is being treated for neck issues, but they've yet to mention anything about a concussion.

Rangers' Staal Leaves Saturday

News: Marc Staal left Saturday's game after taking a shoulder to the jaw from the Devils' Reid Boucher.
Analysis: He was able to skate off the ice under his own power, but wasn't able to return. It's been a tough season for the former top defenseman, who has just three points and a minus-7 rating in 30 games. Stay tuned for news on how serious the ailment might be; judging by Marc Staal's reaction as he came off the ice, he seems unlikely to play Sunday against Washington.

Rangers Staal Expected To Play Saturday

News: Marc Staal (foot) reported no problems and is expected to play Saturday against the Predators, Andrew Gross of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal blocked a shot with his foot in Thursday's win over the Stars and while the x-rays came back negative, he missed practice Friday. Coach Alain Vigneault confirmed that Staal would play Saturday.

Rangers' Staal Sits Out Practice With Sore Foot

News: Marc Staal missed Friday's practice with a sore foot, Newsday's Steve Zipay reports.
Analysis: Marc Staal suffered the injury after taking a shot to the foot in Thursday's win over the Stars. He remained in the game but was seen limping thereafter, with his absence from practice showing there's at least some level of concern about the injury. He should be viewed as questionable for Saturday's game vs. the Predators, though the defenseman doesn't appear worried after X-rays on the foot came back negative, according to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.

Rangers' Staal Breaks Slump

News: Marc Staal scored his first goal since Opening Night in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Devils.
Analysis: After a promising showing in the lockout- and injury-shortened 2012-13 season, it's been a slow opening to the year for Marc Staal in the points department, as he's managed all of three in 18 games. He's got the talent and the pedigree, but his second-pairing placement and lack of power-play time make it tough for him to find the scoresheet often.
