Wings' Howard Stops 39 In Win

News: Jimmy Howard allowed one goal on 40 shots in Wednesday's 2-1 OT win over the Rangers.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard kept his team in the game all night, and was able to squeak out a win in overtime. He's now 19-8-9 on the season, and his 2.20 GAA ranks seventh in the entire league.

Wings' Howard To Play Wednesday

News: Jimmy Howard will be in the net for Wednesday's game against the Rangers, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard has alternated starts with backup Jonas Gustavsson over the last four games, but he should still be viewed as the Red Wings' unquestioned No. 1 goalie. He's graded out as an above-average netminder this season with a 2.23 GAA and .917 save percentage, but he could struggle to uphold those numbers against a potent Rangers attack that ranks second in the league in scoring.

Wings' Howard Gets Back In Win Column

News: Jimmy Howard stopped 20 of 22 shots Thursday in a 3-2 win over the Sharks.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard played well, but still needed a third-period surge by the Wings to come back from 2-1 and end up with the victory. Times have been tough for Howard lately, as he lost a month to injury and has won just two times in six starts since returning.

Wings' Howard To Start Thursday

News: Jimmy Howard will be between the pipes for Thursday's game against the Sharks, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Backup Jonas Gustavsson received the start in goal for the Red Wings' previous game against the Kings, so it's not surprising that coach Mike Babcock will go back to Jimmy Howard for Thursday's match. Over 13 career outings against the Sharks, Howard has had limited success, going 3-6-4 with a 2.79 GAA and .910 save percentage.

Wings' Howard Takes Shootout Loss

News: Jimmy Howard gave up three goals on 25 shots before falling 4-3 in the shootout to Anaheim on Monday.
Analysis: The Jimmy hasn't exactly been a force to be reckoned with since returning on Feb. 11 from a groin injury, as he's picked up just one win on five starts. Jimmy Howard's typically a nice fantasy option as the undisputed starter on a very good Detroit squad competing for the top spot in the Atlantic Division, but he'll certainly need to be better than the 11 goals he's coughed up over the last three contests. Look for the American netminder to continue to work out the kinks as Detroit's road trip continues this week against L.A., San Jose and Nashville.

Wings' Howard To Start Monday

News: Jimmy Howard will start in net Monday against the Ducks, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard struggled in his last outing and was pulled after allowing six goals on 32 shots to the Stars. Despite the outing, he still remains the clear top goaltender ahead of Jonas Gustavsson, and he will be in the crease once again Monday.

Wings' Howard Pulled Against Dallas

News: Jimmy Howard was pulled Saturday against Dallas after giving up six goals on 32 shots.
Analysis: It was a rough night for Jimmy Howard, but he didn't get credited with a loss, as Jonas Gustavsson entered the game late in regulation and helped the Wings comeback and beat the Stars 7-6 in overtime. Howard's been pretty up-and-down of late, having allowed at least four goals in three of his last 10 outings. He now owns a 17-8-8 record on the season with a .918 save percentage and 2.22 GAA. He boast impressive rate stats, so despite some recent inconsistency, Howard remains one of the better fantasy tendies around.

Wings' Howard In Net Saturday

News: Jimmy Howard will get the start between the pipes Saturday against the Stars, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Saturday will mark Jimmy Howard's fourth consecutive start in net for the Red Wings. He's been solid this season, going 17-8-8 with a 2.10 GAA and a .921 save percentage through 36 games with Detroit this year. However, he faces an unfavorable matchup on Saturday, as Dallas averages 3.09 goals scored per game, good for fourth best in the NHL.

Wings' Howard Allows Two In Win

News: Jimmy Howard made 32 saves on 34 shots in Wednesday's 3-2 shootout win over the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard kept the Red Wings in the game for most of the night, and finally seems to be finding his groove after returning from an injury in mid February. He's now 17-8-8 on the season with a .921 save percentage and a 2.10 GAA in 36 appearances.

Wings Going With Howard On Wednesday

News: Jimmy Howard will man the net for Wednesday's game against the Blackhawks.
Analysis: After a rough return from his groin injury last Saturday against the Jets, Jimmy Howard rebounded with a superb outing in defeat Monday, keeping the Habs off the board for the first 57 minutes before conceding the game-winner to Max Pacioretty. Wednesday's outing will present another tough test for Howard, but he's still probably a safe play for fantasy owners. When healthy this season, Howard has generally been at the peak of his game, delivering a 2.11 GAA and .921 save percentage over his 35 appearances.

Wings' Howard Dealt Loss

News: Jimmy Howard stopped 27 of 28 shots but was on the losing end of Monday's 2-0 game against the Canadiens.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard looked much better in his second start back from a groin injury, and actually carried a shutout for the first 57 minutes of the contest. He may still continue to shake off some rust from his time off going forward, but it was still encouraging to see Howard turn in a sharp performance despite the loss.

Wings Turn To Howard On Monday

News: Jimmy Howard is slated to start Monday's game against the Canadiens, mlive.com reports.
Analysis: On the heels of a 5-4 shootout loss Saturday to the Jets, Jimmy Howard is in line to make his second start after missing over a month with a groin injury. Overall, Howard sports a 2.14 GAA and a .919 save percentage in 34 games to date.

Wings' Howard Outdueled In Shootout In Return

News: Jimmy Howard made 34 saves but was on the wrong end of a 5-4 shootout loss Saturday against the Jets.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard, who had missed the Red Wings' previous 11 games with a groin injury, wasn't at his best in his first outing in more than a month. He did at least manage to flash a quick glove on a few occasions, most notably in overtime, when he denied a potential game-winner on a Mathieu Perreault breakaway shot. Howard would then hold serve with Winnipeg goalie Michael Hutchinson for the first three rounds of the shootout before Drew Stafford beat him for the deciding tally. Despite the so-so showing, coach Mike Babcock quickly confirmed after the loss that Howard would receive the start for the team's next game Monday against the Canadiens, according to Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News.

Wings To Start Howard On Saturday

News: Jimmy Howard will get his first start since Jan. 10 against Winnipeg on Saturday, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard looked solid in relief duty Wednesday and looks to continue what had been a stellar season before he landed on injured reserve. He is 16-7-7 with the NHL's third-best GAA (2.09).

Wings' Howard Perfect In Relief Effort

News: Jimmy Howard came on in relief of Petr Mrazek for the third period of Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Penguins.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard was activated off of IR Wednesday after dealing with a few weeks with a groin injury, and was rushed back into duty after the poor performance of Mrazek. Howard stopped all the shots he faced in the third period, so fantasy owners should be confident that the netminder is once again healthy.

Howard Activated From IR By Red Wings

News: Jimmy Howard (groin) was activated from injured reserve Wednesday.
Analysis: As was announced earlier in the week, Jimmy Howard will serve in a backup capacity in his return to active duty, as Petr Mrazek garners the start Wednesday against the Penguins. Howard is expected to see his first action since Jan. 10 when the Red Wings take on the Jets on Saturday.

Wings' Howard (Groin) Won't Start Wednesday

News: Jimmy Howard (groin) will not start Wednesday against the Penguins, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: While coach Mike Babcock indicted he would roll with the hot hand of Petr Mrazek on Wednesday, he did indicate that Jimmy Howard will back up Mrazek for the game and could start Saturday. The team will need to activate Howard from injured reserve before Wednesday to have him available as a backup, but the solid play of Mrazek will allow the team to give Howard a little more rest before putting him back in net.

Red Wings' Howard Targeting Penguins Game

News: Jimmy Howard (groin) practiced for about 30 minutes Tuesday and said that he hopes to return for the Feb. 11 game against the Penguins, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: With Jonas Gustavsson (shoulder) likely to finish a conditioning assignment within the next few days, the Red Wings may soon return to full health between the pipes. Gustavsson should be back this weekend, and it sounds as if Jimmy Howard won't be too far behind.

Wings' Howard Still At Least One Week Away

News: Jimmy Howard (groin) skated Tuesday, but is still at least a week away from a return, Ansar Khan of MLive reports.
Analysis: The Red Wings haven't been hurt too badly by Jimmy Howard's injury, but they need him for the stretch run if they're going to make some playoff noise. Petr Mrazek will remain the No. 1 goalie until Jonas Gustavsson shows he's healthy again.

Red Wings' Howard Unlikely For Road Trip

News: Jimmy Howard (groin) isn't expected to be activated from injured reserve during the Red Wings' forthcoming three-game road trip, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: If that's indeed the case, it would push Jimmy Howard's return back to no sooner than mid-February. The netminder has been able to skate a few times this week, but has yet to receive clearance to resume practicing.

Red Wings' Howard Skates Briefly Before Practice

News: Jimmy Howard skated for about 15 minutes before Monday's practice, and he said afterward that he hasn't suffered any setbacks, The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard said he's making progress, and while he isn't setting an updated timetable, he said the original estimate of one month still sounds about right. Having last played Jan. 10, he's seemingly shooting for a return in early-to-mid February.

Red Wings' Howard (Groin) To Practice Monday

News: Jimmy Howard (groin) is expected to practice Monday, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: General manager Ken Holland previously said that the Red Wings didn't expect to have Jimmy Howard back in the crease until the first week of February, so it seems likely that he'll require several practices before his activation would be considered. The Red Wings haven't seen much of a performance dip under the stewardship of Petr Mrazek, allowing the team to wait until Howard is 100 percent healthy before he's given the go-ahead to return.

Red Wings' Howard Targeting Early-February Return

News: Jimmy Howard (groin) is targeting a return to action at some point between Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: GM Ken Holland admitted that the expected return date for the goalie is only a rough estimate, as it's often difficult to pinpoint an exact recovery timetable for groin injuries. Since suffering the slight tear, Jimmy Howard has maintained conditioning by working out off the ice, but a return shouldn't be considered forthcoming until he starts skating again.

Slight Groin Tear Confirmed For Wings' Howard

News: The ultrasound Jimmy Howard received Monday confirmed the goalie had a slight groin tear, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Fortunately, it doesn't appear Jimmy Howard will require surgery, but the injury will nonetheless keep the goalie out until after the All-Star break. His official timetable for a recovery is two-to-four weeks, with how he progresses over the next week likely dictating if he hits the short or long end of that frame.

Red Wings' Howard Out 2-to-4 Weeks

News: Jimmy Howard will miss two-to-four weeks with the groin injury he suffered in Saturday's game, Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard will miss an extended period of action with the groin injury, but the upcoming NHL All-Star break will give him nearly a week to recover without missing any games. Petr Mrazek will be the Red Wings' primary goaltender until Howard is ready to return to the ice.
