Wings' Howard: OK In Relief, But Back To Bench

News: Petr Mrazek and not Jimmy Howard will start Game 3 of Detroit's opening-round series against Tampa Bay, according to the Associated Press.
Analysis: He made 11 saves and allowed just a single goal in a period of relief Saturday in Game 2, but coach Mike Babcock doesn't trust the scuffling twine tender enough to start him back at home.

Red Wings' Howard Replaces Mrazek In Third Period

News: Jimmy Howard has replaced Petr Mrazek for the third period of Saturday's game against Tampa Bay, Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard has entered the game after Mrazek allowed four goals on 18 shots in the first two periods.

Red Wings Bypass Howard For Game 1 Start

News: Jimmy Howard will not receive the start in goal for Game 1 of the Red Wings' first-round playoff series against the Lightning.
Analysis: After a tremendous start to the season, Jimmy Howard lost a ton of momentum after the All-Star break, finishing with a 7-6-4 record, 2.99 GAA, and .896 save percentage in the second half. Despite those struggles, Howard still had a chance to solidify the Red Wings' No. 1 goalie job heading into the playoffs, but was unable to take advantage, surrendering four goals on 26 shots in his final outing of the regular season in Thursday's loss to the Canadiens. For now, coach Mike Babcock will turn the net over to Petr Mrazek to open the first-round series, but the Czech netminder's own inconsistencies could yet create an opportunity for Howard to reclaim the gig. Even so, Howard's current standing as the Wings' understudy in goal won't make him an attractive choice for those in playoff pools.

Howard Allows Four In Wings' Loss

News: Jimmy Howard was beaten for four goals on 26 shots Thursday in an overtime loss to Montreal.
Analysis: The Wings have their playoff spot wrapped up, but they have to be awfully concerned about their goaltending situation entering the postseason. Jimmy Howard has been wildly inconsistent, as has backup Petr Mrazek, and Jonas Gustavsson (concussion) is still not practicing. Howard's now been a shadow of his former self in two consecutive campaigns, which has to be cause for concern for fantasy owners and the Red Wings alike.

Wings Stick With Howard On Thursday

News: Jimmy Howard is slated to start Thursday's game against Montreal, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard, who stopped 30 of 32 shots in Tuesday's 3-2 victory over Carolina, has won his last two starts and is now set to take aim Thursday at a Montreal squad that snapped a three-game losing streak with Sunday's 4-1 win over the Panthers. While the Wings have injuries of their own to contend with, it's still notable that the Habs with be without their leading scorer, Max Pacioretty, on Thursday.

Wings' Howard Back To Winning Ways

News: Jimmy Howard saved 30 of 32 shot attempts Tuesday in a 3-2 victory over Carolina.
Analysis: That's two strong starts in a row and two wins for Jimmy Howard, who had hit a bit of a rough patch recently, causing him to lose quite a few starts to Petr Mrazek. Detroit's still fighting to officially secure its playoff berth, so Howard will probably start again Thursday in Montreal, and perhaps Saturday in a season-concluding rematch against the 'Canes as well.

Wings' Howard Gets Tuesday Start

News: Jimmy Howard will start Tuesday's game against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard, who backstopped Saturday's 3-2 shootout win over the Wild, returns to the Wings' net Tuesday after giving way to Petr Mrazek in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Caps. Howard will take aim Tuesday at a Carolina team that dropped a 4-3 decision to the last-place Sabres on Monday.

Wings' Howard: 22 Saves In Shootout Win

News: Jimmy Howard made 22 saves through regulation and then stood tall through eight rounds of the shootout to deliver a 3-2 win over the Wild on Saturday night.
Analysis: He really needed the win Saturday -- he's been scuffling of late and it was just his second win in his last seven starts. It certainly doesn't cement his status as playoff starter just yet, but it's a nice rebound from some sketchy play over the last month. The Wings need he or Petr Mrazek to step up and seize the reins heading into the postseason.

Red Wings' Howard To Start Saturday

News: Jimmy Howard will start Saturday's game against the Wild, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Detroit picked up just one point from the last two games, both of which were started by Petr Mrazek. While Jimmy Howard is back in net Saturday, Mrazek is ticketed for Sunday's game against Washington. According to Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily, coach Mike Babcock said Howard is being afforded the start primarily because the team has a back-to-back. It thus seems Mrazek will likely be the busier of the team's two goaltenders over the final week of the regular season.

WIngs' Howard Sees Relief Duty Sunday

News: Jimmy Howard stopped 15 of 16 shots in relief of Petr Mrazek in Sunday's loss to the Islanders.
Analysis: While Mrazek gave up four goals on 11 shots, it was Jimmy Howard who was stuck with the loss, dropping his record to 21-13-10 on the season. Mrazek has been gaining some traction of late, but it remains unclear if the Wings will continue to ride the 23-year-old. While Howard's .911 save percentage is lacking, he's shown he can win games and remains a reliable fantasy option when he gets the nod.

Wings Yank Howard Thursday

News: Jimmy Howard was pulled from Thursday's loss to San Jose after giving up three goals on 10 shots in the first period.
Analysis: The struggles continue for Jimmy Howard, who's got five losses in his last six starts and rightfully deserved a fifth Thursday, though backup Petr Mrazek was stuck with it instead. Over the course of those six games, Howard has given up a brutal 21 goals.

Wings' Howard Getting Start Thursday

News: Jimmy Howard will be between the pipes for Thursday's game against the Sharks, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard was unexpectedly savaged by the porous Coyotes attack his last time out Tuesday, surrendering five goals on 22 shots to take the overtime loss. The slip-up was even more surprising after he held two of the league's more powerful offenses in the Blues and Lightning to a combined three goals in his preceding two starts. While that type of inconsistency can be frustrating, fantasy owners shouldn't shy away from Howard just yet. He'll still make for a reliable play on most occasions.

Wings' Howard Hammered In OT Loss

News: Jimmy Howard was tagged for five goals on just 22 shots Tuesday in an overtime loss to the Coyotes.
Analysis: A brutal outing for Jimmy Howard against one of the league's worst attacks, and it's the second time in his last four starts that he's been blown up, as he gave up seven to the Flyers (another bad team) just 10 days prior. Howard's been stuck with the loss in four of his last five outings, but backup Petr Mrazek's own inconsistencies may help the veteran maintain the status quo.

Wings' Howard Stops 23 In Win

News: Jimmy Howard turned aside 23 of 24 shots in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Blues.
Analysis: It was a nice bounce back outing for Jimmy Howard as he had lost three straight while allowing 12 goals in that span. It was a rough stretch for the 30-year-old, but he appears to have snapped out of the funk as he's surrendered just three goals since being benched for two straight following last week's seven-goal performance. Howard figures to remain the main option in net during the final stretch run of the season.

Red Wings' Howard To Start Tuesday

News: Jimmy Howard will start Tuesday's game against the Coyotes, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard ended a three-game losing streak Sunday against St. Louis, turning away 23-of-24 shots in a 2-1 overtime victory. He'll draw a more favorable matchup Tuesday evening, against an ice-cold Phoenix team that ranks 29th in goals scored per game (2.0).

Wings' Howard Starts Sunday

News: Jimmy Howard will start in goal Sunday against the Blues, Ansar Khan of MLive Media Group reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard receivied a couple nights off following a game against the Flyers in which he allowed seven goals on 36 shots. Despite allowing just two goals on 31 shots to the Lightning on Friday, Howard took the loss again, making it three straight and four of the last five in which he started. He'll get another go again Sunday, looking to snap his skid between the pipes.

Red Wings' Howard Gives Up Two Goals In Loss

News: Jimmy Howard gave up two goals on 31 shots in Friday's loss to the Lightning.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard has now lost three straight games, dropping his record to 20-12-9 on the season. While he's been struggling of late, the 30-year-old still owns an impressive .914 save percentage and 2.37 GAA on the season. While Petr Mrazek may be the goalie of the future, Howard is the man in Detroit right now, so keep him rolling.

Red Wings' Howard To Start Friday

News: Jimmy Howard will start Friday's game in Tampa Bay, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Petr Mrazek will handle Thursday's game against the Panthers, with Detroit saving Jimmy Howard for the more difficult matchup. Howard gave up seven goals in his last start, and the Red Wings may want him to get some extra rest down the stretch.

Wings, Howard Embarrassed By Flyers

News: Jimmy Howard was victimized for a whopping seven goals on 36 shots in an embarrassing 7-2 loss to the Flyers on Saturday afternoon.
Analysis: Yuck. The rowdy confines of Wells Fargo Center were far from kind to Jimmy Howard on this day. Aside from wins against Edmonton and an impressive 39-save victory over the Rangers, he's actually been quite bad lately, allowing a combined 14 goals in three starts -- all of which were losses. Backup Petr Mrazek is the confirmed starter for Sunday's tilt against Pittsburgh, so if he's able to put forth a solid performance, look for Howard to potentially ride the pine for a few games given his recent struggles.

Red Wings To Start Howard On Saturday

News: Jimmy Howard will be between the pipes for Saturday's game against the Flyers, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Incredibly, the game will be the first Jimmy Howard has ever played in Wells Fargo Center, despite having 329 NHL appearances under his belt. Philadelphia has been a house of horrors for the Red Wings for quite some time, as the Red Wings haven't been able to claim a win in the city since Game 2 of the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals. Much of those struggles predate both Howard and the current iteration of the Flyers, who appear to have fallen out of the Eastern Conference playoff race due to a recent offensive drought. With that in mind, Howard probably makes for an effective lineup choice Saturday, despite what the Red Wings' history might suggest.

Howard Stops 23 As Wings Lose

News: Jimmy Howard gave up three goals on 26 shots Thursday in a loss to the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: In this battle of Red vs. Blue, Blue came out on top. Jimmy Howard's been pretty inconsistent of late -- he's posted sub-.900 save marks four times in his last five appearances. But his rate stats remain fairly strong, and playing for the Wings often puts goalies in good position to win.

Wings To Start Howard Thursday

News: Jimmy Howard will be in net Thursday against Columbus, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard stopped 36 shots in a comeback win against Edmonton on Monday and will be rewarded with another start. He remains entrenched as the Wings' No. 1 starter, and will put a 20-9-9 record and 2.25 GAA on the line Thursday.

Wings' Howard Sharp In Win

News: Jimmy Howard stopped 36 of 38 shots in Monday's 5-2 win over the Oilers.
Analysis: After a bad outing in his last start, Jimmy Howard bounced back to allow two goals or less for the third time in his last four starts. Coach Mike Babcock had been rotating between Howard and Jonas Gustavsson over the past nine games, but with the latter experiencing concussion-like symptoms, Howard should be able to reclaim a more regular role in net.

Wings Turn To Howard On Monday

News: Jimmy Howard will start Monday's game against the Oilers, Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News reports.
Analysis: With Jonas Gustavsson injured on Sunday, the Wings have recalled Petr Mrazek to back up Jimmy Howard, who relieved Gustavsson in the third period of Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Bruins.

Wings' Howard Allows One In Relief

News: Jimmy Howard entered in the third period of Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Bruins, allowing one goal on seven shots.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard came on in relief of the Jonas Gustavsson after he surrendered four goals in two periods and suffered an unspecified injury. Coach Mike Babcock indicated that Gustavsson's injury was serious enough to recall Petr Mrazek, so Howard should be back in the crease with more regularity after starting just four of the last eight contests.
