No Concussion For Wings' Howard

News: Updating a previous report, it was a case of the flu -- not a concussion as rumored -- that kept Jimmy Howard out for the final two games of the Red Wings' playoff series with the Bruins, MLive.com's Brendan Savage reports.
Analysis: As the Red Wings first suggested after Jimmy Howard was a last-minute scratch for Game 4, the goalie's illness was the only reason behind Jonas Gustavsson getting the starting nod for the last two matches of the series. The bout with the flu was quite untimely for Howard, but a fitting end to a disappointing injury-plagued season for the netminder. After posting identical 2.13 GAA marks during the previous two seasons, Howard saw that number inflate all the way to 2.66 over 51 regular-season contests in 2013-14.

Detroit's Howard (Flu) Misses Practice

News: Jimmy Howard (flu) did not practice Friday and his status for Saturday's Game 5 is up in the air, Ansar Khan of MLive reports.
Analysis: Jonas Gustavsson was solid in relief of Jimmy Howard but still gave up a 2-0 lead and let in the deciding overtime goal. The Red Wings did call up a third goalie Friday, but it's unclear whether that is just a precaution.

Red Wings' Howard Scratched With Flu Thursday

News: Jimmy Howard was limited to backup duties for Thursday's Game 4 loss to the Bruins due to a case of the flu, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard has missed games due to the flu on two previous occasions in the regular season, but his absence Thursday was particularly poor timing, with the Red Wings down 2-1 in the series entering Game 4. Backup Jonas Gustavsson was superb in stopping 37 of the 40 shots he faced Thursday, but he ultimately coughed up a 2-0 lead before letting in the game-winning goal in overtime.

Wings' Howard Saves 31 But Takes Loss

News: Jimmy Howard stopped 31 shots Tuesday in a 3-0 Game 3 loss to the Bruins.
Analysis: The first goal Jimmy Howard allowed was one he probably should have stopped, but he still only let in two goals in the game. It isn't helping Howard that Detroit has scored a total of two goals in three games, and it's only via Howard's shutout in Game 1 that Detroit is still in this series.

Detroit's Howard Stops 25 In Loss

News: Jimmy Howard stopped 25 shots Sunday, but took a 4-1 loss to the Bruins in Game 2 of the first-round series.
Analysis: The Bruins got Detroit to play a tough, slowed-down game, and as a result, Boston dominated. Jimmy Howard will look to bounce back at home Tuesday night.

Howard Guides Wings In Game 1

News: Jimmy Howard turned away all of the 25 shots he faced in Friday's 1-0 victory over Boston in Game 1 of their Atlantic Division semifinal series.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard had been one of the league's better netminders in the month leading up to the playoffs and denied the presumptive Eastern Conference favorite in the series opener. The odds of Detroit leaving Boston up 2-0 are slim, but many believed the Wings wouldn't win Game 1. Howard will need to be one of the league's best goalies in the playoffs and he fired the opening salvo Friday.

Analysis: The Red Wings signed Jimmy Howard to a big contract for games like this, as Detroit is a big underdog against the burly Bruins. Howard played fairly well down the stretch to help Detroit get into the playoffs, but he'll need to find another level to get out of the first round.

Analysis: After hard-fought wins over the Bruins and Maple Leafs his last two times out, it would be a major upset if Jimmy Howard folded against the Sabres, who rank dead last in the NHL with 51 points on the season. Use Howard with confidence Friday.

News: Jimmy Howard stopped 33 of the 35 shots he faced during Wednesday's win over the Bruins.

News: Jimmy Howard will start between the pipes Wednesday against the Bruins, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard will have a tough task ahead of him Wednesday as the Red Wings will be without Pavel Datsyuk (knee) and Daniel Alfredsson (undisclosed) again. Howard is 18-18-11 on the season with a .909 save percentage and a 2.71 GAA.

News: Jimmy Howard will be in net for the Red Wings when they face the Maple Leafs on Saturday, Ansar Khan of MLive reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard has struggled lately having lost his last three and allowing a totals of 12 goals in that span. A fairly soft match-up against the Leafs should help him right the ship though.

Wings' Howard Expected In Net Saturday

News: Jimmy Howard will likely be in net on Saturday for the Red Wings.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard has had a subpar March for Detroit, highlighted by Thursday's loss to Montreal, in which he gave up five goals on 29 shots. For the month, the netminder has an .892 save percentage and 3.18 GAA. He'll look to turn things around and finish March with a strong performance on Saturday.

Wings' Howard Gives Up Five In Loss

News: Jimmy Howard was tagged for five goals on 29 shots in Thursday's loss to the Canadiens.
Analysis: Les Habs got all over Jimmy Howard in this one -- early, late and in between -- to send him to his third straight defeat. Howard's allowed 12 goals in his last three starts and has given up four-plus tallies in four of his last seven. The big-ticket netminder may have done his fantasy owners more good while he was on injured reserve than he has while healthy lately.

Red Wings Turn To Howard On Thursday

News: Jimmy Howard will receive Thursday's start in goal against the Canadiens, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Howard has underperformed his last two outings (both losses), but coach Mike Babcock will continue to stick with him as the Wings remain in a four-way tie for one of the two Wild Card spots in the East. The goalie was solid in his sole outing earlier this season against the Habs, stopping 19 of 20 shots in a 2-1 overtime win on Feb. 26.

Wings' Howard Picks Up 17th Win

News: Jimmy Howard backstopped the Red Wings to his 17th win of the season Saturday, making 28-of-30 saves in a 3-2 win at Minnesota.
Analysis: The 29-year-old has improved his record to 17-16-10 after starting the season in horrendous fashion when he won just six of his first 23 starts. Also, Jimmy Howard has wins in four of his last five starts -- including a 39-save performance in Pittsburgh -- and is showing that he is capable of keeping the Wings in games despite being decimated by injuries. With the Wings now back in the playoff picture grasping to the East's final playoff spot, coach Mike Babcock will roll with Howard most nights. You should too.
