Analysis: Kris Russell's power-play wrist shot from 40 feet out helped the Flames roar back from a 3-1 deficit in the second period to tie the match, but the Jets ultimately put the game away in the third. Russell would finish the game with a minus-2 rating and three blocked shots in his 23:56 of ice time.

Flames' Russell Tallies Three Points Friday

News: Kris Russell had a goal and two assists during the Flames' 6-5 loss to the Predators on Friday.
Analysis: Kris Russell has been showing a bit more offensive prowess over the last five games as he's now tallied one goal and four assists over that span. He now has five goals and 21 assists over 56 games this season.

Flames' Russell Notches Assist Wednesday

News: Kris Russell had an assist Wednesday to aid in a 4-1 win over Ottawa.
Analysis: Kris Russell is putting together a pretty good year, with 21 points in 48 games. He hasn't been especially productive as of late, with two points in his last nine contests, but may be called on to play more with Dennis Wideman possibly out.

Flames Extend Russell For Two More Years

News: Kris Russell signed a two-year, $4.52 million extension with the Flames on Saturday.
Analysis: With Kris Russell in the midst of his best season as a scorer to date, the Flames decided to lock him up before he hit free agency. He ranks tied for second among the Flames' defensemen with 20 points in 44 games.

Flames Get Russell Back

Flames' Russell Returns To Practice

News: Kris Russell (upper body) returned to practice Monday, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports.
Analysis: Kris Russell missed Saturday's game against the Wild with the injury, but his participation in line rushes Monday suggests that he'll be available for Tuesday's game vs. the Habs. Assuming everything continues to go well for him during Tuesday's morning skate, expect him to log his usual 23 minutes of ice time in his return.

Flames Russell: Upper-Body Injury Keeps Him Out

News: Kris Russell (upper body) took the morning skate Saturday, but did not dress Saturday, according to CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.
Analysis: He is poised to return Tuesday, so rest easy in weekly leagues. He seems to have found a home in Calgary and looks like he's emerging as a decent fantasy option.

Flames' Russell Good To Go Moving Forward

News: Kris Russell looked no worse for wear in Monday's game against San Jose, notching an assist in his first game back after missing a month.
Analysis: Kris Russell has been a revelation for Calgary when healthy, with solid all-around play and 17 points in 37 games. He may be available after the injury and would be a valuable acquisition. If you held on to him, it appears safe to get him back in the lineup Wednesday against Phoenix.

Flames Activate Russell From IR

News: Kris Russell (knee) will be activated from injured reserve and return for Monday's game against the Sharks, NHL.com's Aaron Vickers reports.
Analysis: Kris Russell will be playing in his first game since Dec. 21 and should provide a nice boost to the Calgary offense, as he was one of the team's more productive defensive scorers before being hurt. In 36 games this season, he's totaled four goals and 12 assists.

Flames' Russell (Knee) To Return Monday

News: Kris Russell (knee) will return to the lineup for Monday's matchup against the Sharks, the Calgary Herald reports.
Analysis: Kris Russell made his return to practice on Friday, but wasn't quite ready to suit up for Saturday's matchup against the Canucks. He'd been on pace for a career-best offensive year before spraining his MCL on Dec. 21, and he'll look to get back on track ahead of schedule Monday in San Jose.

Flames' Russell To Travel With Team

News: Kris Russell (knee) has been cleared for full practice and will resume traveling with the team.
Analysis: Kris Russell practiced Friday for the first time since suffering his injury in late December, and coach Bob Hartley confirmed that the 26-year-old will remain out for at least a few more games. Still, he seems to be making good progress and would appear to have an outside chance to return late next week.

Flames' Russell Skates With Teammates Friday

News: Kris Russell took part in team workouts Friday for the first time since injuring his knee in late December, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 reports.
Analysis: Kris Russell will need a few practice sessions before he is ready to return to game action, but he is making good progress, and it would appear he has a good chance to return closer to the lower end of his 4-to-6 week recovery timetable.

Flames' Russell Resumes Skating

News: Kris Russell (knee) skated on his own Saturday and Sunday, Aaron Vickers of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: When Kris Russell sprained his MCL back on Dec. 21, a four-to-six week timetable was established for his return. This development suggests Russell may be progressing a bit ahead of schedule, but it does not necessarily move up his estimated return window.

Flames' Russell (Knee) Set To Miss 4-6 Weeks

News: Kris Russell (knee) has a second-degree MCL sprain and will miss the next four-to-six weeks, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports.
Analysis: The Flames were dealt a dose of bad news Monday, as two of their more productive scorers in Kris Russell and Curtis Glencross were both ruled out for at least a month. The Russell injury is probably the more damaging of the two from a fantasy perspective, as the scoring acumen he's demonstrated (16 points in 36 games) is something of a rarity for a defenseman. Russell has further supplemented his value with 105 blocked shots and 23 hits on the season. He'll be missed on a Flames blue line that is already missing another productive player in Dennis Wideman.

Flames' Russell Out For Monday's Game

News: Kris Russell (lower body) will miss Monday's game and may miss multiple games, the Calgary Herald reports.
Analysis: Coach Hartley was short on specifics of Kris Russell's injury, which occurred Saturday, other than the defenseman has "no chance" of playing Monday. Russell may miss a few games before returning.

Flames' Russell Leaves With Lower-Body Injury

News: Kris Russell left Saturday's game against the Penguins with a lower-body injury and will not return.
Analysis: Kris Russell skated for just over 20 minutes and compiled three blocked shots and a minus-1 rating before departing. The severity of his injury likely won't be known until after the game.

Russell Blocks Six Shots To Preserve Flames' Win

News: Kris Russell assisted on teammate Jiri Hudler's game-winning goal in Saturday's contest against Edmonton. He finished the night plus-2 and blocked six shots.
Analysis: He's cooled off a bit from his torrid late-October pace, but he remains an above-average fantasy asset at the blue line.

Flames' Russell Scores Power-Play Goal In Loss

News: Kris Russell scored a power-play goal during the Flames' 3-2 loss to the Avalanche on Friday.
Analysis: Kris Russell opened the scoring just seven minutes into the game as he pumped home his fourth goal of the season. The defenseman heated up midway through November but had gone without a point in his last three games. This tally should get him back on track. We'll also note that Mark Giordano is also back in the fold, so keep an eye on whether Russell's ice time and power-play time remain unchanged.

Flames' Russell On A Roll

News: Kris Russell tallied his fourth point in five games with an assist in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Columbus.
Analysis: Kris Russell has really stepped up his game since Mark Giordano went down, as he has nine points in his last 12 games. Those who took a chance on Russell's fantasy prospects have been rewarded handsomely.

Flames' Russell Nets Third Goal

News: Kris Russell tallied his third goal of the season Tuesday as the Flames fell to the Sharks 3-2 in overtime.
Analysis: Kris Russell has really produced for the Flames this season, with nine points in 18 games. He's become a surprisingly good fantasy option, especially considering his previous high in points is 23 and he's on pace for 41.

Calgary's Russell Pots OT Goal

News: Kris Russell netted the game-winning goal in overtime Sunday against the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Kris Russell has really picked up the slack with Mark Giordano sidelined, as he had five points in four games. He may still be available in some leagues, so go out and get him.

Flames' Russell Notches Assist In Loss

News: Kris Russell notched an assist and skated nearly 30 minutes Wednesday in a 4-2 loss to Toronto.
Analysis: Kris Russell will be picking up big minutes with Mark Giordano on the shelf, and he has three points in his last two games to show for it. He's playing beside stud Dennis Wideman, so Russell may be a steal -- at least until Giordano returns -- off the waiver wire.

Big Game For Russell In Flames' Win

News: Kris Russell posted a goal, an assist and a plus-5 rating Saturday in a 5-2 win over Washington.
Analysis: He's part of a resurgent Calgary blue line, teaming with Mark Giordano and Dennis Wideman to supplement Calgary's forward scoring. It would be a mistake to extrapolate his five points in 11 games into full-season numbers, but watch him over the next few weeks to see if he really has turned a corner at age 26.

Russell Traded To Flames For Fifth-Rounder

News: Kris Russell was traded to the Flames on Friday for a 2014 fifth-round pick.
Analysis: Kris Russell appeared in 33 games for the Blues last season, tallying one goal and six assists. He scored more than 20 points in both the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons but has just 19 points in his last 88 NHL games.
