Flames' Russell Records PP Assist

News: Kris Russell picked up a power-play assist, six blocks, and seven PIM in Sunday's Game 3 win over the Canucks.
Analysis: Kris Russell's emergence down the stretch was one of the reasons the Flames were able to claim a playoff spot even after Mark Giordano (biceps) was lost for the season in early March, and he hasn't slowed down in the postseason. Through three games, Russell has two goals, an assist, and 13 blocked shots.

Flames' Russell Makes Lone SOG Count In Game 1

News: Kris Russell made his lone shot-on-goal count Wednesday in Game 1 against Vancouver, firing the game-winner past Eddie Lack with 30 seconds left in regulation.
Analysis: Kris Russell has seriously stepped up his game since stud blueliner Mark Giordano (torn biceps) went down on Feb. 25. Russell is typically known as a shot-blocking machine but has shown some offensive flair of late, so the Flames will likely continue to lean on him for big minutes and occasional scoring production from the back end as the series with Vancouver progresses.

Flames' Russell Likely Out Saturday

News: Kris Russell (rest) is expected to sit out Saturday's season finale against the Jets, Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: The Flames plan to send several key regulars to the press box Saturday after clinching a playoff berth with Thursday's win over the Kings. Kris Russell will finish a productive season with marks of four goals, 34 points, a league-leading 283 blocks, and a plus-18 rating over 79 games.

Points Trickling In For Flames' Russell

News: With a power-play assist in Tuesday's win over the Coyotes, Kris Russell has a point in four of his last five games.
Analysis: Kris Russell has quietly been delivering top-notch fantasy production from the blue line since early March, as he's now posted three goals and 11 assists over his last 18 games. His increased productivity has helped keep the Flames afloat in the wake of Mark Giordano's season-ending biceps injury.

Flames' Russell Ends Brief Slump

News: Kris Russell ended a three-game pointless skid by rolling up a pair of assists, a plus-1 rating and two PIM in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Flyers.
Analysis: With that, Kris Russell's set a new career high in points -- 30. It's not much, but his recent productivity (10 points in his last eight games) in combination with his plus-13 rating has made him a legitimate fantasy asset in deeper formats, and increasingly in shallower ones as well.

Three Assists For Flames' Russell

News: Kris Russell dished out three helpers in a 6-3 win over the Ducks on Wednesday. He also skated to a plus-2.
Analysis: Run -- don't walk -- to grab this guy if you can, as he's now piled up eight points in the last four games while skating on the Flames' top defensive pair with Dennis Wideman. He's also getting premium minutes on Calgary's top power-play unit, and is stepping up quite capably in lieu of fantasy stud Mark Giordano, who's out for the season with a torn biceps tendon.

Flames' Russell Scores Twice In Loss

News: Kris Russell scored twice -- once on the power play -- in 28:56 of ice time in Sunday's loss to Ottawa.
Analysis: Kris Russell is now riding a three-game point streak, compiling two goals and five points in that span. He's up to 25 points and a plus-10 rating in 64 games on the season. While he's been inconsistent, he averages 23:34 of ice time and should post 30-plus points.

Flames' Russell Ends Lengthy Skid

News: Kris Russell picked up two power-play assists and blocked a whopping 15 shots Thursday against the Bruins.
Analysis: The points ended a nine-game scoreless skid for the 27-year-old blueliner, who'd had an assist from two games ago taken away upon further review. It's worth monitoring Kris Russell in the near future, as his power-play ice time spiked to 5:20 in this one -- far more than his season average. On the defensive side of things, Russell's developed into a truly prolific shot blocker over the last couple years, and he'd already hit a new career high (203) on Tuesday even before this game. In fact, he's got 23 blocks in the last two. That's just ridiculous.

Flames' Russell Picks Up Assist In Loss

News: Kris Russell picked up an assist while seeing 28:21 of ice time in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Islanders.
Analysis: Kris Russell helped spoil goalie Jaroslav Halak's shutout bid with 21 seconds remaining in the third period, as he found Josh Jooris for the Flames' only tally of the evening. More notable than the helper was Russell's TOI, which was his second-highest mark of the season. It's no coincidence that it came on a night when Mark Giordano (upper body) was unavailable, with Russell absorbing most of the minutes that became available. Should Giordano's injury result in a long-term absence, Russell's fantasy value would likely notice a modest spike.

Flames' Russell Bags First Goal

News: Kris Russell scored his first goal of the season in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Sharks.
Analysis: It took 50 games for Kris Russell to get his first tally, improving his shooting rate on the season to an ugly 1.5 percent. It seems like a safe bet that he might find twine a couple more times this season, but his reluctance to shoot won't help matters. After bagging seven goals while attempting 1.60 shots per game last season, Russell is averaging just 1.34 attempts in 2014-15.

Flames' Russell A Game-Time Decision With Illness

News: Kris Russell is dealing with an illness and will be a game-time decision for Saturday's match against the Oilers.
Analysis: Kris Russell is suffering from the flu and was unable to skate Saturday morning. The team will see if he can notice enough progress in his recovery over the afternoon to give it a go against the Oilers, but Tyler Wotherspoon would enter the lineup in the event the blueliner can't play.

Flames' Russell (Illness) Participating In Warmups

News: Kris Russell (illness) is taking part in pregame warmups, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The FAN reports.
Analysis: Kris Russell had been declared a game time call for the Saturday evening matchup, and his presence in pregame warmups suggests that he'll likely be good to go.

Flames' Russell Gets Assist In Win

News: Kris Russell assisted on Dennis Wideman's game-winning goal in overtime Monday against the Kings. He also added three hits and three blocks defensively.
Analysis: Kris Russell is still without a goal through 44 games this season, but his total of 17 assists are respectable enough for a defenseman. Even so, the lack of diversity in his scoring probably limits his usefulness to deeper formats at this point.

Flames' Russell Racks Up Assist Trio

News: Kris Russell collected a power-play assist and two more at even strength in Thursday's overtime win against Colorado.
Analysis: While Kris Russell's yet to find twine on the heels of last year's seven-goal campaign, he's piled up a very fantasy-relevant 13 assists in 25 games. His production's been a bit spotty, but fantasy owners in leagues that count blocked shots have to be happy about the complementary value of the 74 of those he's compiled this year, including 13 over the last four games.

Flames' Russell Ready For Saturday Return

News: Kris Russell (lower body) participated in pregame warmups and looks ready to go for Saturday's game against the Devils, Flames radio announcer Derek Wills reports.
Analysis: Kris Russell will make his return after missing nearly a week with the injury. He's one of several Calgary defenseman playing well this season, recording eight points and 56 blocked shots in 19 games.

Flames' Russell Could Return Saturday

News: Kris Russell (lower body) took part in Saturday's morning skate, Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun reports.
Analysis: It would seem to bode well for Kris Russell's chances of playing Saturday against the Devils, but the Flames could take precaution after he hadn't been practicing the past few days. Russell has been one of many productive members along the Flames' blue line, contributing eight points and 56 blocked shots over 19 games.

Flames' Russell Out Thursday

News: Kris Russell (lower body) will miss Thursday's game against the Blackhawks, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Kris Russell wasn't able to take part in the Flames' morning skate, but the team is still viewing him as day-to-day. Raphael Diaz is set to replace him in the lineup for a second straight game.

Flames' Russell (Lower Body) Questionable Thursday

News: Kris Russell (lower body) is questionable for Thursday's game against the Blackhawks, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 the FAN reports.
Analysis: Kris Russell's injury is simply specified as lower body, and its origin is a bit unclear. If he is unable to go Thursday, Raphael Diaz will likely dress again in his place.

Lower-Body Injury Keeps Flames' Russell Out Tues.

News: Kris Russell will miss Tuesday's game against the Ducks due to a lower-body injury, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Kris Russell's injury wasn't publicized during the Flames' morning skate, making his absence from Tuesday's lineup something of a surprise. Raphael Diaz will step in to cover Russell's spot on the team's blue line.

Flames' Russell To Sit Out Tuesday

News: Kris Russell wasn't on the ice for pregame warmups and looks like he'll miss Tuesday's game against the Ducks, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: It's not clear if Kris Russell's absence is due to an injury or if he's merely a healthy scratch. The blueliner had appeared in all 19 of the team's previous games this season, tallying eight assists to accompany a plus-5 rating.

Flames' Russell Goes Plus-3 In Win

News: Kris Russell dished out an assist and finished with a plus-3 rating in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Coyotes.
Analysis: Kris Russell helped set up Paul Byron's second goal of the game and played well on his own end, blocking five shots and forcing a team-high three takeaways. The 27-year-old has been generally quiet since tallying six assists over a five-game stretch in October, but he still represents a quality depth option on defense in deeper fantasy formats.

Flames' Russell: Five Assists In Five Games

News: Kris Russell picked up a pair of assists and went plus-3 in Thursday's win over Carolina.
Analysis: After four scoreless games to start the year, Kris Russell's picked up five helpers in his last five contests, and he's gone a mighty impressive plus-8 in that span.

Flames' Russell Has Solid Game Sunday

News: Kris Russell piked up an assist and went plus-3 Sunday in a 4-1 win over the Jets.
Analysis: Kris Russell is now plus-5 with two points and five shots on goal in his last three games. He seems to be recovering from his slow start, and last year's mark of 29 points shouldn't be too hard to replicate.

Flames' Russell Notches First Assist

News: Kris Russell scored his first point of the season Wednesday in a 2-1 overtime win against Chicago.
Analysis: Kris Russell is off to a slow start after scoring nearly 30 points in 2013-14. His previous high in points was 19, so it's hard to tell whether these five games are just a sluggish start to the season or a more realistic indicator of his scoring ability.

Flames' Russell Finds Twine Friday

News: Kris Russell found the net for his seventh goal of the season Friday against the Jets.
Analysis: Kris Russell's power-play wrist shot from 40 feet out helped the Flames roar back from a 3-1 deficit in the second period to tie the match, but the Jets ultimately put the game away in the third. Russell would finish the game with a minus-2 rating and three blocked shots in his 23:56 of ice time.
