Leafs' Franson Gets Another Assist

News: Cody Franson picked up his 20th point of the season Thursday when he tallied an assist in a 4-1 loss to the Hurricanes.
Analysis: He's scoring and playing very physical hockey -- he has 90 hits in 30 games this season. Just beware that shooting percentage -- it's sitting at 10.4 percent, but his career mark is 6.1. There will be some regression, but he'll still deliver solid numbers for fantasy owners going forward.

Leafs' Franson: Goal And Assist In Win

News: Cody Franson picked up his first points in six games in Sunday's shootout win over Los Angeles. He scored a goal and added an assist. The helper came on the power play.
Analysis: He also delivered seven hits and five blocked shots. His 19 points lead all Leafs' blueliners.

Leafs' Franson: Streak Now Stands At Eight Games

News: Cody Franson stretched his point streak to eight games and 10 points after he delivered an assist in Tuesday's 9-2 loss to Nashville. Remarkably, he was one of just four Toronto players to finish with an even (or better) rating on the game.
Analysis: It wasn't like he only played a few shifts -- he was out there for almost 18 minutes. His streak (two goals, eight assists) is just about as good as it gets this season. Use him well.

Leafs' Franson Riding Seven-Game Streak

News: Cody Franson's point streak stands at seven games and nine points, including seven assists, after he picked up an assist in Saturday's loss to Buffalo.
Analysis: Wow -- that makes 12 points in 16 games. Test the trade waters immediately. He can't keep up this pace and he's not a 50-point defender. But a Leaf fan in your league might think he's the second-coming of Borje Salming.

Toronto's Franson On Five-Game Streak

News: Cody Franson's two assists Wednesday stretch his current point streak to five games and seven points, including six assists.
Analysis: He has 10 points in 14 games and has been surprisingly productive this season. He's also blocking shots and laying hits, so he has multi-categorical value.

Leafs' Franson Rattles Off Two Helpers

News: Cody Franson collected an assist on the power play and another at even strength in Thursday's shootout loss to Colorado.
Analysis: He's got three points in the last two games now and six in 11 games on the year, a more-than-respectable pace for fantasy purposes. Cody Franson's recorded four of his points on the man advantage, but unlike last year, he's been able to keep his plus-minus on the positive side of the ledger so far this season despite a minus-1 on Thursday.

Toronto's Franson Gets First Goal In Nine Games

News: Cody Franson scored a power-play goal in Tuesday's loss to the Coyotes.
Analysis: He has just four points in 10 games this season; it was his first goal in nine games and just his second point in that same span. His value is limited right now, although he's delivering lots of hits for those of you in deeper specialty formats.

Leafs' Franson Returns With Two Points

News: Cody Franson (knee) returned to action Sunday against the Rangers, contributing a goal and assist in the 6-3 victory.
Analysis: Cody Franson made his presence felt right from the get-go, staking the Leafs to a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 7:45 into the first period. The blueliner had missed the Leafs' first two games of the season while nursing a knee injury, but as Sunday's performance revealed, everything looks to be sound on the health front.

Leafs' Franson (Knee) Activated, But Will Sit

News: Though he was activated from injured reserve earlier in the day, Cody Franson (knee) didn't take part in pregame warmups and looks prepared to sit out Saturday against the Penguins, David Alter of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson's participation in morning skate and subsequent activation seemed to signal that the blueliner was ready for a return, but it appears coach Randy Carlyle will take the cautious approach and sit him out for one more game. Stuart Percy will remain in for the Leafs on defense, but it Franson could be ready to take his spot Sunday versus the Rangers.

Leafs' Franson Appears Likely To Play

News: Cody Franson (knee) was activated from injured reserve Saturday and appears likely to suit up against the Penguins, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Coach Randy Carlyle said after Cody Franson took part in morning skate that the defenseman would only be an option to play Saturday, but the Leafs likely wouldn't activate him from IR if they didn't plan on using him. Franson, who missed the team's first two games while dealing with the knee injury, is expected to pair up with Morgan Rielly.

Leafs' Franson Unlikely To Return Until Sunday

News: Coach Randy Carlyle said after Friday's practice that it's more likely Cody Franson (knee) returns to action Sunday against the Rangers rather than Saturday versus the Penguins, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: With the Leafs playing back-to-back games over the weekend, it seems to make more sense that the team would hold Cody Franson out until the second contest, which would keep the team's blue line fresher overall. There's still a chance that Franson could talk his way into Saturday's lineup, but look for the team to play it safe and keep him on target for a Sunday return.

Leafs' Franson Looking Questionable For Saturday

News: Cody Franson (knee) was present at Friday's practice, but didn't rotate in on a defined pairing, TSN's Mark Masters reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson was able take reps on the team's first power-play unit, but it remains uncertain if he'll be ready to go for Saturday's game against the Penguins. In any case, Franson does look like he's closing in on a return, so it's probably best for his fantasy owners to hang on to him for now.

Leafs Move Franson To IR

News: Cody Franson (knee) was placed on injured reserve by the Maple Leafs on Tuesday, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: The Maple Leafs had already ruled Cody Franson out of Wednesday's season opener against the Canadiens, but because he first suffered the injury Sept. 28, he'll be able to come off IR as soon as he's deemed available. Franson seems to be targeting a return to the lineup Saturday against the Penguins, with his status likely to be determined based on how his workouts go over the next few days. Stuart Percy is expected to assume Franson's spot on the Leafs' third line in the interim.

Maple Leafs' Franson Out For Opener

News: Cody Franson (knee) will not play in Wednesday's season opener against the Canadiens, TSN's Mark Masters reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson was able to skate the last couple days, but the Maple Leafs want to give him a few more days to rest and recover before putting him back in the lineup. Franson may just miss the lone game, as he is targeting Saturday's game for his season debut.

Maple Leafs' Franson Remains Unlikely For Opener

News: Cody Franson (knee) remains unlikely to play in Wednesday's season opener, TSN's Jonas Siegel reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson was able to get in some practice time Tuesday for the second straight day, but it does not appear he will be ready to play Wednesday. With Franson able to skate, however, he could be a possibility for the Maple Leafs' second game of the season Saturday.

Leafs' Franson Expected To Miss Opener

News: Cody Franson (knee) is not expected to play in Wednesday's season opener against the Canadiens, Jonas Siegel of TSN reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson skated on his own Monday morning, so he's probably not that far off, but it doesn't look like he'll be available for opening night.

Leafs' Franson Practices

News: Cody Franson (knee) skated at practice Monday morning, David Alter of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson is still dealing with a bruised kneecap, but could be ready the team's season opener. The situation is definitely worth monitoring, as there should be an update on the blueliner's status in the next couple days.

Leafs' Franson A Question Mark For Opener

News: Cody Franson (knee) will not play in Friday's preseason finale and his status remains in doubt for the Oct. 8 opener against the Canadiens, the Canadian Press reports.
Analysis: Though Cody Franson was expected to return to full health quickly after he was diagnosed with a bruised knee cap Tuesday, it's no longer a given that he'll be able to recuperate in time for the opener. If that's the case, the Leafs may have to keep eight defensemen on their 23-man roster to start the season, with either Stuart Percy or Korbinian Holzer likely to benefit as a result.

Maple Leafs' Franson Diagnosed With Bruised Knee

News: Cody Franson has been diagnosed with a bruised knee cap, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson will not be allowed to skate until Thursday, but he appears to have avoided a serious injury, as he is considered day-to-day. It seems unlikely that the knee injury, which Franson suffered Sunday, will prevent him from being ready for the Maple Leafs' season opener.

Leafs' Franson To Be Reevaluated

News: The Maple Leafs are waiting for the swelling in Cody Franson's knee to go down before reevaluating him, Mark Masters of TSN reports.
Analysis: There's no official diagnosis for Cody Franson yet, but the early indications are positive. We'll have another update when Franson is reevaluated by doctors, but for now it looks like he's a relatively safe fantasy pickup.

Maple Leafs' Franson Helped Off Ice Sunday

News: Cody Franson left Sunday's exhibition game with an apparent leg injury.
Analysis: It's not exactly clear precisely what type of injury Cody Franson is dealing with, but he could not put any weight on his leg and had to be helped to the locker room. Expect an update on Franson's status as more details become available.

Leafs Sign Franson To One-Year Deal

News: Cody Franson signed a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Maple Leafs on Monday, Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson's new deal allows him and the team to avoid arbitration. The 26-year-old defenseman had 33 points (five goals) last season with the Leafs, logging 30 penalty minutes along the way. He skated with the team's third defensive pairing in 2013-14, and can expect a similar role in the upcoming season.

Leafs, Franson Far Apart On Salary

News: Cody Franson, who has filed for salary arbitration, is seeking $4.2 million in a deal, while the Leafs have countered with $2 million, according to a report on Toronto's Sportsnet 590 TheFAN.
Analysis: The arbitration hearing is scheduled for Monday and the arbitrator can choose either side or something in between. It's a stretch for Cody Franson to expect to receive the full $4.2 mil after his middling 2013-14. But then again, stranger things have happened. He's a stretch as a top-four defender, but his second-unit power-play ability makes him fantasy relevant in deeper leagues.

Leafs' Franson Files For Arbitration

News: Cody Franson has filed for salary arbitration, according to Sportsnet360.
Analysis: The Leafs would love to move him and tried to in that failed deal for Montreal's Josh Gorges. Cody Franson can be valuable to fantasy owners if he's deployed in the right way and on the right team. But his slow feet means he need to insulated and that wasn't really the case in Toronto.

Leafs Want To Re-Sign Franson

News: The Leafs would like to re-sign Cody Franson, but none of their contact offers so far have been acceptable, reports TSN's Darren Dreger.
Analysis: He set new career marks in assists (28), points (33) and average time on ice (20:42) this season. But Cody Franson's advanced stats, particularly his possession stats, left a lot to be desired. It remains to be seen how serious the Leafs are in their so-called preference to re-sign him, especially if they are in the hunt to sign free agent Dan Boyle. Stay tuned.
