Leafs Sign Franson To One-Year Deal

News: Cody Franson signed a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Maple Leafs on Monday, Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson's new deal allows him and the team to avoid arbitration. The 26-year-old defenseman had 33 points (five goals) last season with the Leafs, logging 30 penalty minutes along the way. He skated with the team's third defensive pairing in 2013-14, and can expect a similar role in the upcoming season.

Leafs, Franson Far Apart On Salary

News: Cody Franson, who has filed for salary arbitration, is seeking $4.2 million in a deal, while the Leafs have countered with $2 million, according to a report on Toronto's Sportsnet 590 TheFAN.
Analysis: The arbitration hearing is scheduled for Monday and the arbitrator can choose either side or something in between. It's a stretch for Cody Franson to expect to receive the full $4.2 mil after his middling 2013-14. But then again, stranger things have happened. He's a stretch as a top-four defender, but his second-unit power-play ability makes him fantasy relevant in deeper leagues.

Leafs' Franson Files For Arbitration

News: Cody Franson has filed for salary arbitration, according to Sportsnet360.
Analysis: The Leafs would love to move him and tried to in that failed deal for Montreal's Josh Gorges. Cody Franson can be valuable to fantasy owners if he's deployed in the right way and on the right team. But his slow feet means he need to insulated and that wasn't really the case in Toronto.

Leafs Want To Re-Sign Franson

News: The Leafs would like to re-sign Cody Franson, but none of their contact offers so far have been acceptable, reports TSN's Darren Dreger.
Analysis: He set new career marks in assists (28), points (33) and average time on ice (20:42) this season. But Cody Franson's advanced stats, particularly his possession stats, left a lot to be desired. It remains to be seen how serious the Leafs are in their so-called preference to re-sign him, especially if they are in the hunt to sign free agent Dan Boyle. Stay tuned.

Leafs' Franson Gets Two Helpers

News: Cody Franson picked up two assists in Thursday's win over the Bruins, extending his point streak to three games and four points (one goal, three assists).
Analysis: He hasn't had the season we expected, but Cody Franson does seem to be picking things up lately. Use this to your advantage.

Leafs' Franson Likely Back In Thursday

News: Cody Franson (illness) is expected to return to the lineup Thursday vs. the Kings, Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson missed Tuesday's game with the illness, but was back on the ice at morning skate Thursday, a sign he'll probably be available. Even before the illness, Franson was struggling to stay productive for the Leafs. He hasn't scored a point since Feb. 1, a span of nine games.

Leafs' Franson Sits Will Illness Tuesday

News: Cody Franson missed Tuesday's game with an illness, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson was a late scratch by the Leafs, but the illness doesn't sound like anything that will sideline him beyond Tuesday's game. It's probably safe to expect his return to the lineup Thursday vs. the Kings.

Leafs' Franson Not In Pre-game Warmup

News: Cody Franson was not present during the Leafs' pre-game warmup, the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: No reason has yet been given for his absence, but it looks as if he may be sitting this one out. The second-line defenseman has 27 points over 64 games so far this season.

Leafs' Franson Gets 100th Career Assist

News: Cody Franson notched his 100th career assist Saturday in a win over Ottawa.
Analysis: He has six points, including four assists, in his last eight games. And his 27 points are now just two shy of his career mark (29). Take advantage of this tidy little roll. His on-ice progression hasn't been as solid as his offensive output suggests. But we'll take it.

Leafs' Franson: First Point In Seven Games

News: Cody Franson picked up his first point in seven games when he tallied a power-play assist in Sunday's win over the Devils. Fourteen of his 21 points have come with the man advantage.
Analysis: He's been scuffling of late, but so have most of his teammates. He's still on a 38-point pace, but his recent spotty play shows us his game isn't taking the big step forward the Leafs expected. There's still time for him to settle back into a growth pattern, so don't despair -- he's still giving you precious power-play production. But we'd shop him to a Leafs' fan to see if they'd overpay.

Leafs' Franson: Two More Helpers

News: Cody Franson (hip) picked up two assists in Friday's shootout win over the Sabres. He now has five points (one goal, four assists) in his last six games.
Analysis: He's performing remarkably well given the nagging nature of his injury. And he's delivering a lot of muscle, too -- he has 28 hits in those six games. He's a great fantasy play right now.

Leafs' Franson: Nagging Hip Injury

News: Cody Franson's hip injury has been bothering him since training camp, reports the Toronto Star. "[He] seizes up in the hip area," says coach Randy Carlyle.
Analysis: Bottom line? If his hip has been bothering him since camp, it'll likely continue to ache until he gets some real rest. And right now, that won't come until the Olympic break in February. It doesn't look like it is affecting his game, though -- he's still delivering solid fantasy production. Keep him rolling.

Leafs' Franson Expected To Play Monday

News: Cody Franson (hip) is expected to play Monday against the Rangers, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson was held out of Sunday's practice with discomfort in his hip, but his absence may have been more for maintenance purposes than anything. He's provided three points in his last four games and is probably still worth leaving in fantasy lineups even if he's moving at less than optimal speed Monday.

Leafs' Franson Leaves Morning Skate

News: Cody Franson (undisclosed) left Sunday's morning skate in considerable discomfort, TSN's Dave McCarthy reports.
Analysis: No word on the exact nature of the injury but Cody Franson had been dealing with a lower-body injury just the week before. The team will likely update his status soon.

Leafs' Franson Pots First Goal

News: Cody Franson (lower body) played Wednesday and scored his goal of the season in a 3-1 loss to the Kings. He returned after missing the last couple games.
Analysis: The goal tied the game at one apiece in the second period and game on the power-play, where 12 of Cody Franson's 15 points have come on the season. He's not quite scoring at the same clip he enjoyed last season, but he's still been productive enough to justify a roster spot in most fantasy formats.

Leafs' Franson Healthy

News: Cody Franson (lower body) will be available to play Thursday against the Stars, James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson returned to practice Wednesday after missing the Leafs' last couple games, and should be back in the lineup Thursday. The blueliner currently has 13 assists through 26 games.

Leafs' Franson Practices

News: Cody Franson (lower body) practiced Wednesday, David Alter of Sportsnet 590 reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson missed the Leafs' last two games with a lower body injury, but returned to the ice for Wednesday's practice. He has 13 assists in 26 games so far, and his status for Thursday's game against the Stars is still unknown.

Leafs' Franson Out Tuesday

News: Cody Franson (lower body) will not play Tuesday against the Sharks, David Alter of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson was back at practice Tuesday but it appears coach Randy Carlyle wanted to give him some additional time off to recover from the injury. Look for him to have a more realistic chance at getting back in the lineup Thursday against Dallas.

News: Cody Franson (lower body) was not at practice Monday for the Maple Leafs, TSN.ca's Mark Masters reports.

Leafs' Franson Scratched With Injury

News: Cody Franson sustained an injury during pregame warmups and was scratched for Saturday's game against the Canadiens, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: The Leafs haven't provided official word on the injury, but it sounds like it was an lower-body ailment since Cody Franson was seen limping to the locker room. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Morgan Rielly on Saturday.

Leafs' Franson: Two Helpers

News: Cody Franson picked up two assists, one of which came on the power play, in Saturday's win over the Sabres.
Analysis: He now has 12 helpers on the season, but just three in his last eight games. Both of the assists came when he fired perfect shots from the point that were tipped by a teammate. He may not have the hardest shot on the team, but he certainly has what may be the most accurate, at least from the point.

Leafs' Franson Scoreless Over Last Three Games

News: Cody Franson is scoreless over his last three games.
Analysis: Cody Franson is more of a facilitator than a player who regularly takes shots on goal, making his fantasy value highly dependent on his teammates capitalizing on his setups. The Leafs have still scored eight goals over those three games, so consider it to be bad luck more than anything that he hasn't gathered any assists of late. In spite of the mini-drought, he still has seven power-play points, tied for the league lead among defensemen with the Coyotes' Keith Yandle and the Habs' P.K. Subban.

Maple Leafs' Franson Cleared To Play Saturday

News: Cody Franson (face) is good to go Saturday against the Oilers, Paul Hendrick of Leafs TV reports.
Analysis: Cody Franson cut his nose on his visor in Thursday's game but after returning to practice with a face mask, he'll be able to see his normal allotment of minutes Saturday. He has two assists and a plus-2 rating through five games, while averaging four more minutes of ice time than he did last season.

Leafs' Franson Sports Stitches, But Hopes To Play

News: Cody Franson (face) was on the ice at practice Friday wearing a full cage, reports the Toronto Star. "All the symptoms are good, it's just a matter of pain," he said after practice.
Analysis: He went face-first into a stanchion Thursday night and a pool of blood formed as he stayed down on the ice. He received six stitches to the bridge of his nose and is still in pain. His nose is broken, but he hopes to play Saturday against the Oilers.
