Wild's Koivu Ends Three-Game Scoring Slump

News: Mikko Koivu assisted on two goals in Monday's Game 6 win over the Avalanche.
Analysis: Mikko Koivu provided a total of three helpers in the first two games of the series, but his offense had gone AWOL in the proceeding three games before the dry spell ended in Game 6. The Wild will need Koivu to maintain his facilitating ways if they hope to upset the Avalanche in Wednesday's Game 7.

Koivu Stays Hot, Leads Wild To Win

News: Mikko Koivu registered a pair of assists in Tuesday's win over the Bruins, and scored the winner in the shootout to boot.
Analysis: He's been incredibly hot over his last dozen games, failing to hit the scoresheet only twice in that span and totaling a sparkling 16 points -- 13 of them assists, the Finnish playmaker's specialty.

Wild's Koivu Tallies Two Points

Wild's Koivu Snaps Scoring Drought Saturday

News: Mikko Koivu scored for the first time in nearly three months Saturday, recording his ninth of the season in a 3-2 loss to the Red Wings.
Analysis: Although he's more of a playmaker than a goal scorer, Minnesota's captain hadn't tickled the twince since December 27, so it was nice to see him pot his ninth of the season. Despite missing 17 contests with an ankle injury, the Finnish veteran is up to 41 points in 54 games - a pace that would make him a 62-point player in a full 82-game season. A word of caution, though: he has been supplanted as the team's top center by fellow-Finn Mikael Granlund, and his current linemates Matt Moulson and Justin Fontaine, while decent, just don't pack the same punch as Zach Parise and Jason Pominville. The Wild will need Mikko Koivu to keep producing -- regardless of who he lines up with -- as they cling to one of two Western Conference wild card spots with 11 games left.

Koivu Has Three-Point For Minnesota

News: Mikko Koivu had three assists and a plus-3 rating in a thrashing of the Islanders on Tuesday.
Analysis: Prior to Tuesday's game, Mikko Koivu had only two assists since returning from injury and still hasn't scored a goal. Nonetheless, it was a great game for Koivu, as well as linemates Matt Moulson and Justin Fontaine. The trio combined for eight points Tuesday.

Wild's Koivu To Return From IR Monday

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) has been activated from injured reserve and will play Monday against the Flames.
Analysis: The Wild have won their first two games coming out of the break, but they're more than mix up their lines to bring their captain back into the fold. Although Mikko Koivu has typically manned the center spot on the top line in the past for the Wild, coach Mike Yeo will use him on the second line with Dany Heatley and Charlie Coyle in his first game back. Assuming he's put the ankle issues behind him, Koivu should quickly reemerge as one of the Wild's more capable scorers.

Wild's Koivu Skates Sunday

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) was on the ice for practice Sunday and is being considered a game-time decision for Monday, Chad Graff of the Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Mikko Koivu was considered a game-time decision Friday as well, but the club wanted to give him the weekend just to be sure. Graff speculates that, by the way he looked in practice, Koivu will likely play so fantasy owners will want to keep watch before setting lineups for the week.

Wild's Koivu Out Friday

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) will not play in Friday's game against the Canucks, Michael Russo of the Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mikko Koivu was thought to be a possibility to be activated from IR for the game, but is not quite ready to return. He is opting to stay on the safe side and not push it too fast. The Wild has the weekend off and returns to action at home Monday against the Flames, so Koivu could target a return for that game.

Wild's Koivu May Play Friday

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) may return to lineup for the Wild on Friday, Michael Russo of the Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mikko Koivu is still on IR for the Wild and an official move would have to be made before game-time. The team will likely make a determination sometime before the start of Friday's game against the Canucks.

Wild's Koivu Out For Thursday

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) will not play Thursday against the Oilers.
Analysis: No surprise here a day after coach Mike Yeo said that he'd likely hold Mikko Koivu out Thursday so as not to have him play both ends of the team's back-to-back. He appears more likely to be available for Friday's game against the Canucks, but his activation from IR probably wouldn't be confirmed until only a few hours before game time if that's the case.

Wild's Koivu Likely Out Thursday

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) is unlikely to play Thursday against the Oilers, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: While coach Mike Yeo didn't officially rule Mikko Koivu out for Thursday's contest, Yeo said it noted that it probably wouldn't ideal to send Koivu back into the lineup for back-to-back games. Consider him more likely to make his return from the ankle surgery Friday against the Canucks, assuming he hits no setbacks in his recovery over the next couple of days.

Wild's Koivu Making Progress

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) indicated that he had a good day at practice Tuesday, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: With regard to Mikko Koivu's chances of suiting up Thursday against the Oilers, coach Mike Yeo suggested Tuesday that the forward could be a game-day call. "Mikko continues to get better; he's getting closer," Yeo said. "I don't think we can make a decision here until we get probably to Thursday."

Wild's Koivu Nearing Full Health

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) was on the ice for Monday's full practice.
Analysis: Though Mikko Koivu took part in all five-on-five drills for the first time since sustaining the injury Jan. 4, coach Mike Yeo wouldn't say whether the captain would be available for Thursday's tilt with the Oilers. The coach did not if the game had been Monday, Koivu wouldn't have been ready to play, but perhaps with two more days of practice, his status could change.

Wild's Koivu Cleared To Practice

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) has been cleared to practice with the Wild on Wednesday, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mikko Koivu skated on his own during the break after he was ruled out for the Olympics, but Wednesday's session will mark the first time he'll be joining his teammates since breaking the ankle Jan. 4 against the Capitals. The Wild will try to ease him back into action slowly, but if all goes well during practices, he should be available for the team's first game out of the break Feb. 27 against Edmonton.

Wild's Koivu Out Of The Olympics

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) will not play in the upcoming Olympics in Sochi, Chad Graff of the Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Mikko Koivu was expected to be the captain of Team Finland in the Sochi Olympics. He has been trying to work back from an injured right ankle and does not feel healthy enough to take the ice for international play. Look for him to return sometime following the Olympic break.

Minnesota's Koivu Out Thursday

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) won't play Thursday against the Predators, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.
Analysis: Moreover, Mikko Koivu's status for the upcoming Olympics remains decidedly murky as well. "Mikko's doing everything he can to come back," general manager Chuck Fletcher said. "It's a six-to-eight-week injury that we're trying to accelerate and have him come back in five, but not only is he not cleared to play right now, he's not even cleared to practice with the team."

Wild's Koivu Doubtful For Next Two Games

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) is unlikely to play in either of the Wild's final two games before the Olympic break and his status for playing for Finland in the Olympics is in doubt, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Koivu recently returned to Minnesota after he said he wasn't ready to play after a recent skate.
Analysis: It sounds unlikely he'll play for the Wild before the Olympics. He had hoped to return in four weeks after his surgery, but it looks like that timetable may have been too aggressive.

Wild's Koivu (Ankle) Returns Home For Rehab

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) returned to Minnesota on Saturday to continue his rehab, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.
Analysis: With Mikko Koivu not set to return to the lineup Saturday, the Wild decided it was best for him to return home to skate on his own. The captain hasn't practiced with the team yet, and though the Wild are holding out hope that he'll be back in the lineup before the Olympics, coach Mike Yeo called him a "long shot" for Tuesday, at the very least.

Wild's Koivu (Ankle) Increases Activity

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) got in some light contact in Thursday's skate, but did not practice with his teammates, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. "With Mikko, we have to see how this progresses. ... Once he can get on the ice with the group, then we'll be able to determine if he can actually get into a game before the [Olympic] break," head coach Mike Yeo said.
Analysis: It sounds like Mikko Koivu will be ready to play for Finland in the Olympics, but he may not play for the Wild before the Olympic break.

Wild's Koivu Traves With Team

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) joined the Wild on the team's current four-game road trip but didn't practice, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. He did skate on his own. "Mikko won't play on this trip, I'm sure, and Spurge [Jared Spurgeon] I'm not sure about," head coach Mike Yeo said.
Analysis: Mikko Koivu is making progress, but it seems more likely he'll return after the break for the Olympics.

Wild's Koivu Hoping To Practice Next Week

News: Mikko Koivu (ankle) said he is ahead of schedule in his rehab and hopes to resume practicing with the team next week, Chad Graff of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Initially ruled out four weeks after undergoing surgery Jan. 6, Mikko Koivu was off crutches just a week later and looks like he could beat his projected timetable for a return by a full week if he checks out fine during practices. The Wild have managed to stay hot without Zach Parise and Koivu in the lineup, but the impending return of both players would do wonders for the team's hopes of solidifying a playoff spot.

Wild's Koivu Progressing Rapidly

News: Mikko Koivu was walking around without crutches at Wednesday's practice, Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mikko Koivu underwent ankle surgery just over a week before and isn't a long way off from getting on the ice, a development that coach Mike Yeo called "amazing" considering the severity of the injury. As it stands now, it looks like Koivu is well on his way to beat the four-week timetable initially given for his injury, though cutting on the ice represents a much more difficult test than simply walking around.

Wild's Koivu Out One Month

News: Mikko Koivu has undergone ankle surgery and is expected to miss four weeks of action, according to Wild beat writer Chad Graff.
Analysis: The Wild are having enough trouble scoring as it is - they have only 106 goals all season - so playing without their top-liner and points leader isn't going to make things easier.

Wild Place Koivu On IR

News: Mikko Koivu (lower body) was placed on injured reserve by the Wild on Monday.
Analysis: Mikko Koivu left Saturday's game against the Capitals in the third period and was unable to return. The exact nature of the injury has not been disclosed, but it is significant enough that the team will hold him out at least for the week and bring up an extra skater to let him rest.
