Zagrapan made qualifying offer

News: Buffalo general manager Darcy Regier said the Sabres have made a qualifying offer to Marek Zagrapan to retain the NHL rights to the prospect forward who has signed a contract to play in Russia next season.
Analysis: Zagrapan has made it quite clear he doesn't want to play for Buffalo in 2009-10 after falling down the prospect rankings. But this offer just protects Buffalo in the event Zagrapan does want to return to the NHL. It seems Zagrapan won't be playing in the NHL in '09-10, so it's safe to cut him in all Fantasy formats.

Zagrapan says he leaving for Russia

News: Center Marek Zagrapan will play in Russia next season whether the Buffalo Sabres like it or not. The Sabres' 2005 first-round draft pick has signed a three-year deal to play for Severstal Cherepovets of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, Zagrapan's agent, Petr Svoboda, said Tuesday. The deal was reached even though the Sabres still have an opportunity to retain Zagrapan's rights by making him a qualifying contract offer by June 15. Whatever the Sabres do won't matter as far as Zagrapan is concerned. "If they make him a qualifying offer, he's still going to stay in Russia," Svoboda said. He added that the contract with Severstal includes a clause allowing Zagrapan to get out of the deal after next season. Sabres general manager Darcy Regier was not available for comment.
Analysis: Svoboda said Zagrapan elected to play in Russia because he was not happy with his progress after spending the past three seasons in the minors, and has yet to play in the NHL. The Slovakian-born Zagrapan was selected 13th overall after enjoying a solid rookie season with Chicoutimi, of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he had 82 points (32 goals, 50 assists) in 59 games. He's failed to develop his play-making skills in the American Hockey League, having managed 127 points (56 goals, 71 assists) in 227 career games. Zagrapan finished with a career-best 49 points (21 goals, 28 assists) to finish sixth among Portland Pirates' scorers last season. It seems Zagrapan won't be playing in the NHL in 2009-10, so it's safe to cut him in all Fantasy formats.

Zagrapan has five goals in January

News: Sabres center prospect Marek Zagrapan has a pair of two-goal games in January for Portland of the AHL. He doesn't have a point in his last four games, but Zagrapan does have five goals and four assists in nine January outings.
Analysis: Zagrapan has 13 goals and 14 assists in 44 games this season for Portland. He was the 13th overall pick in 2005, but hasn't lived up to his offensive potential after having a successful junior career. Zagrapan has yet to make his NHL debut, so he remains nothing more than a long-term keeper.

Zagrapan still sluggish in minors

News: Sabres C prospect Marek Zagrapan has two goals and no assists in seven December games for Portland of the AHL. He is also at minus-4 in that span. Zagrapan has just 11 points in 27 games this season.
Analysis: The 2005 first-round pick is in his third season of minor-league hockey. Zagrapan was the 13th overall pick in 2005, but hasn't lived up to his offensive potential after having a successful junior career. Zagrapan has yet to make his NHL debut, so he remains nothing more than a long-term keeper.

Buffalo make roster moves Friday

News: Top Sabres prospects Nathan Gerbe and Tim Kennedy were among the six players Buffalo assigned to Portland of the AHL on Friday. The team also placed forwards Mathieu Darche and Mark Mancari on waivers for the purpose of assignment to Portland. Forwards Dylan Hunter and Marek Zagrapan, and defensemen Chris Butler and Michael Funk were also sent to Portland.
Analysis: Most of these players are just organizational depth and can be ignored in Fantasy at this time. If anything changes, we will let you know.

Zagrapan leads AHL team

News: Marek Zagrapan has a team-high 10 goals in 28 games for Rochester of the AHL this season. He also has seven assists and he's fifth on the team in points.
Analysis: Zagrapan might see some time at the NHL level, but his Fantasy appeal is minimal for now. He is a good looking prospect in long-term keeper formats, but avoid him in seasonal leagues at this point.

News: The Buffalo Sabres assigned D Michael Funk, F Mark Mancari and 2005 first-round draft pick Marek Zagrapan to Rochester of the AHL on Monday.

Zagrapan has 15 pts. for Amerks

News: Marek Zagrapan has managed seven goals and 15 points through 33 games with Rochester of the AHL.
Analysis: Zagrapan, one of the top prospects in the Sabres system, might be a regular with the Sabres in 2007-08 with Daniel Briere and Chris Drury to be unrestricted free agents at season's end. It is believed the Sabres will not be able to keep both, so Zagrapan is certainly an intriguing selection in long-term keeper formats.

Zagrapan tearing up the QMJHL

News: Marek Zagrapan is tearing up the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with Chicoutimi, posting 49 points (19 G, 30 A) in 28 games.
Analysis: Zagrapan is one of the top prospects in the Buffalo organization, but he is at least a year or two away from making an impact in Fantasy Hockey. He warrants consideration in only the largest of keeper leagues if you can afford the roster space.
