McCollum among Red Wings cuts

News: Detroit cut five players from its preseason roster Sunday. RW Jeremy Williams, D Doug Janik, G Thomas McCollum, C Kris Newbury and RW Jan Mursak were all assigned to the team's American Hockey League affiliate in Grand Rapids.
Analysis: McCollum is the biggest name from this list. The 2008 first-round pick now begins his pro career in the AHL, where he will battle Daniel Larsson -- another top goalie prospect -- for playing time once Larsson returns from Sweden, where Detroit will begin the 2009-10 season. McCollum is a great long-term Fantasy keeper, but it could be very unlikely we see him up in the NHL this season. The remaining Detroit cuts are just organizational depth and have little to no Fantasy appeal.

Red Wings add Williams to system

News: The Red Wings stole two players away from the Maple Leafs organization Tuesday. Detroit came to terms with free agent center Kris Newbury and right winger Jeremy Williams on one-year, two-way contracts. Additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Analysis: Williams has totaled 31 appearances for the Maple Leafs since the 2005-06 season. He has nine goals and two assists in his career. Williams finally got the call from Toronto in early December last season and stormed out of the gate with five goals and two assists in six games. It looked as though he was going to get a permanent stay in the NHL, but a shoulder injury popped up and Williams would appear in just five NHL games the rest of the season. He is clearly organizational depth and can be ignored in Fantasy.

Williams sent packing to AHL

News: Sportsnet.ca reports Maple Leafs LW Jeremy Williams cleared waivers Thursday and was sent back to Toronto of the AHL.
Analysis: Williams only returned to the lineup last week after missing several games with a shoulder injury. He was a nice spark plug for the Leafs when he was first recalled, but the shoulder injury threw a wrench into the equation. He is nothing more than organizational depth and can be ignored in Fantasy.

Williams taken off of IR

News: Toronto LW Jeremy Williams returned to action on Wednesday against the Sabres but failed to record an offensive stat as the Leafs were blanked 5-0.
Analysis: Williams got off to a hot start to his season with seven goals in 10 games since getting recalled before the injury. Wait and see if he regains that form before taking a chance on him.

Leafs' Williams close to returning

News: The Toronto Sun reports that Maple Leafs LW Jeremy Williams (shoulder) could return to action in Fantasy Week 17 (Jan. 26-Feb. 1). "I'm really close," said Williams. "Hopefully in the next week I'll get back. It's just a matter of when the coaches (call on) me. It's been quite the journey with this injury. So I can't be sure on anything right now."
Analysis: Williams only played 10 games before getting hurt, but he put up seven points in those contests, so that production earned him some interest in deeper leagues earlier this season. He is not a recommended start just yet, but keep an eye on his numbers once he gets healthy.

News: Maple Leafs LW Jeremy Williams (shoulder) did not return to the lineup Wednesday against the Bruins. He has missed the last 10 games and remains questionable heading into Tuesday's game at Minnesota.
Analysis: Williams was expected to be back in the Leafs lineup by now, but he continues to sit idle with a nagging shoulder problem. He had some initial success upon his season debut, but still has minimal Fantasy value when healthy. He is not a recommended start even if he is back for the Leafs' game on Tuesday against the Wild.

Williams misses second game

News: Maple Leafs LW Jeremy Williams missed his second straight game Saturday against the Senators with a shoulder injury he suffered on Tuesday. He remains questionable for Tuesday against the Panthers.
Analysis: Williams has breathed some life into the Leafs since he was recalled but this shoulder injury could take him off track. Williams' potential in the NHL is not yet known, so it's hard to make a projection on him.

Williams remains out against Sabres

News: Toronto winger Jeremy Williams suffered a shoulder injury falling awkwardly into the boards early in the first period Tuesday against the Thrashers and was a scratch for Thursday's New Year's Day matchup against Buffalo. He came in with five goals and two assists since his recall Dec. 7.
Analysis: Williams has been a nice spark for the Leafs since his recall and it would be really disappointing to see an injury take him off course. Williams is a wait-and-see Fantasy project at this time.

Leafs' Williams has five goals in six

News: Maple Leafs LW Jeremy Williams continued the stunning start to his 2008-09 campaign with his fifth goal in six games Monday during a win over the Thrashers. He also added an assist.
Analysis: Williams was a pretty consistent scorer in the AHL and has 101 points in a WHL season, so this offensive outburst hasn't come out of nowhere. He has likely earned himself a longer stay in the NHL with his strong start. He has marginal Fantasy appeal right now, but is definitely worth keeping an eye on in deeper formats.

News: Maple Leafs LW Jeremy Williams scored a goal for the fourth time in his five games this season Saturday in a win over the Penguins.
Analysis: Williams has been thriving since being recalled from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL and has likely earned himself a little stay in the NHL with his strong start. He has marginal Fantasy appeal right now, but is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Williams scores in first two games

News: Maple Leafs LW Jeremy Williams scored a goal during Friday's 2-1 win against the Sabres. The Maple Leafs tied it at one with 2:21 left in the second period on Williams' second goal of the season. Williams took a behind-the-back drop pass from Pavel Kubina at the Buffalo blue line before skating to the top of the left circle and wristing a shot by Ryan Miller.
Analysis: Williams has scored in both games he's played this season. After being recalled from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL on Sunday, he scored in the Maple Leafs' 4-2 win over the New York Islanders on Monday night. Williams likely earned himself a little stay in the NHL with his strong start to the season, but he could be back down in the AHL shortly if he can't sustain. He has marginal Fantasy appeal.

Maple Leafs trim their roster

News: The Toronto Maple Leafs assigned G Scott Clemmensen, Fs Simon Gamache, Ben Ondrus, Tony Salmelainen, Jiri Tlusty, Jeremy Williams and D Jay Harrison to Toronto of the AHL on Monday.
Analysis: Gamache was drawing praise during training camp and he is likely to be one of the first players recalled if injuries occur. The same holds true for Harrison on defense. Tlusty is a must-have in all long-term keeper Fantasy leagues, but avoid him in seasonal formats for now.

Jeremy Williams scores again

News: Williams picked up a goal on three shots in 7:18 of ice time in Monday's game at Montreal, scoring in his second straight NHL game.
Analysis: If Williams continues to produce at this rate, Williams might buy himself some more playing time from head coach Paul Maurice. Right now, he is only worth watching and considering in larger Fantasy leagues as a reserve.
