Suspension Over For Jets' Byfuglien

News: Dustin Byfuglien has completed his four-game suspension and will be eligible to return to the Jets' lineup Saturday against the Flames.
Analysis: The Jets managed to secure a playoff spot despite Dustin Byfuglien's absence down the stretch, but the physical defenseman will have an opportunity to get back on the ice once more before the regular season draws to a close. While Winnipeg has little incentive to play its regulars for their usual amount of minutes in a mostly meaningless finale, Byfuglien might be one of the few exceptions since he hasn't played in a game since March 31. Given his incredible production this season from the blue line (18 goals, 45 points, 202 hits, 122 PIM in 68 games), it still appears worthwhile to use Byfuglien in daily formats.

Jets' Byfuglien Suspended Four Games

News: Dustin Byfuglien was handed a four-game suspension Thursday for his illegal cross-check on the Rangers' J.T. Miller during Tuesday's game.
Analysis: The banishment with keep Dustin Byfuglien off the ice until the Jets' regular-season finale on April 11 against the Flames. The loss of Byfuglien, arguably the team's MVP this season, comes at a difficult time, as the Jets are hanging on to a narrow two-point advantage over the Kings for the final wild-card spot. With Byfuglien out of the picture for the next four games, the more defensive-minded Jay Harrison is expected to occupy his spot in the lineup.

Jets' Byfuglien Facing Possible Suspension

News: Dustin Byfuglien will have a phone hearing Thursday morning with the NHL Department of Player Safety for his illegal cross-check on the Rangers' J.T. Miller during Tuesday's game, John Shannon of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: The fact that the hearing will be conducted over the phone instead of in-person suggests Dustin Byfuglien won't be at risk of a lengthy suspension, but he could still be docked a game or two for the transgression. Miller didn't appear to be injured as a result of the incident, which could work in Byfuglien's favor when he pleads his case.

Jets' Byfuglien Strikes Twice In Defeat

News: Dustin Byfuglien potted two power-play goals and collected two PIM and four hits in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Blackhawks.
Analysis: In leagues where he qualifies as a defenseman, Dustin Byfuglien has been one of the most valuable fantasy assets this season. In addition to providing elite scoring numbers (18 goals, 45 points) relative to his peers at the position, Byfuglien is an above-average contributor in PIM (120), hits (201), and plus/minus rating (plus-6). An upper-body injury that cost him three weeks of action earlier this month hasn't managed to slow him down, either; he has three goals in his two games since returning.

Jets' Byfuglien Returning From Injury Thursday

News: Dustin Byfuglien (upper body) will return to the Jets' lineup Thursday against the Canadiens, Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: After rejoining the Jets for their morning skate and fully participating in drills, Dustin Byfuglien finally received the green light to play for the first time since March 4. The team anticipated Byfuglien returning over a week ago, but it appears he didn't quite progress as quickly as the Jets were banking on. Now healthy, Byfuglien, who has amassed 15 goals and 27 assists over 65 games while splitting time at forward and defense, will slot back in as a blueliner Thursday and skate on a pair with Adam Pardy.

Jets' Byfuglien Still Sidelined

News: Dustin Byfuglien (upper body) is not slated to play on the Jets' two-game road trip, which starts Monday against the Oilers, according to Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien's next chance to suit up will thus arrive Thursday, when the Jets take on Montreal at home.

Jets' Byfuglien Set To Miss Saturday's Game

News: Dustin Byfuglien (upper body) wasn't on the ice for the Jets' morning skate and appears to be out for Saturday's game against the Capitals, Kirk Penton of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien seemed poised to return to action earlier this week after he was listed as a game-time decision for Tuesday's game against the Sharks, but he ended up being scratched for that contest and seemingly hasn't warranted consideration for playing in the subsequent two contests. The Jets haven't provided an indication that the blueliner suffered a setback; instead, perhaps it's the case where he just tried to return sooner than he should have. In any event, Byfuglien will be a candidate to play Monday in Edmonton, though he'll need to show some demonstrable progress before receiving clearance to suit up.

Jets' Byfuglien Won't Play Thursday

News: Coach Paul Maurice said that Dustin Byfuglien (upper body) will not play Thursday against the Blues, Sara Orlesky of TSN reports.
Analysis: There was hope Dustin Byfuglien would be able to play Thursday after he was listed as a game-time decision two days ago before ultimately sitting. However, he failed to even take part in the Jets' morning skate Thursday, making it an easy call for Maurice to rule the blueliner out for another day. It's not clear if he suffered a setback in his recovery from the injury, but the Jets still seem to be regarding Byfuglien as day-to-day ahead of Saturday's game against the Capitals.

Jets' Byfuglien Practices Wednesday

News: Dustin Byfuglien (upper body) participated in Wednesday's practice.
Analysis: After entering Tuesday's win over the Sharks as a game-time decision, the Jets ended up ruling Dustin Byfuglien out when he wasn't on the ice for warmups. The Jets may have chosen to keep Byfuglien out for precautionary reasons, as his presence on the ice at Wednesday's practice suggests he hasn't noticed any setbacks in his recovery from the injury. Byfuglien will likely skate again Thursday morning before the team provides word on his availability for the game later that evening against the Blues.

Jets' Byfuglien Looks To Be Out

News: Dustin Byfuglien (upper body) isn't on the ice for pregame warmups, so it appears he'll sit out Tuesday's game against the Sharks, Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien took part in the Jets' morning skate and was being listed as a game-time decision heading into the evening, but after further discussion with the training staff, he'll be forced to miss his fifth straight game. It didn't look as though Byfuglien suffered a setback during the morning session, so if he's able to get back on the ice for practice Wednesday, he should remain a candidate to play Thursday against the Blues. Jay Harrison will take Byfuglien's spot in Tuesday's lineup.

Jets' Byfuglien A Game-Time Decision

News: Dustin Byfuglien (upper body) looked good at morning skate, but Jets coach Paul Maurice said the blueliner will be a game-time decision Tuesday against the Sharks, TSN's Sara Orlesky reports.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien returned to practice Monday, and while all signs point to a Tuesday return, he's less than two weeks into a timetable of two-to-four weeks. He last played in a game Mar. 4.

Jets' Byfuglien Nears Return

News: Dustin Byfuglien (upper body) could play as soon as Tuesday against the Sharks, Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien practiced Monday and though he's no lock to play Tuesday, it does appear at the very least as though he has moved into the day-to-day category for the Jets.

Jets' Byfuglien Practices

News: Dustin Byfuglien (upper body) practiced Monday.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien's presence at practice Monday is clearly a step in the right direction, but at this stage it's unclear when he'll be cleared for game action. Byfuglien last suited up for the Jets on March 4.

Jets' Byfuglien (Upper Body) Out 2-4 Weeks

News: Dustin Byfuglien (upper body) will be out for 2-to-4 weeks, Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien suffered the injury during Wednesday's game against the Senators, and he'll now be out until at least late March. There's some chance he won't play again this season, but with the Jets still fighting for a playoff spot, the team won't necessarily take a cautious approach. That being said, his absence is still a huge loss for the Jets and fantasy owners alike, as his likely replacements in the lineup -- Paul Postma and Adam Pardy -- represent sizable downgrades.

Jets' Byfuglien Exits With Upper-Body Injury

News: Dustin Byfuglien suffered an upper-body injury in Wednesday's game against the Senators and will not return, TSN's Sara Orlesky reports.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien was unable to get back on the ice Wednesday after being injured in the second period. The extent of his setback is uncertain, but expect an update on his status as more details become available.

Jets' Byfuglien Fights, Gets Assist In Win

News: Dustin Byfuglien picked up an assist and earned 11 PIM in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Kings.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien has scuttled between forward and defense for the last several weeks, but he's settled back at the latter position over in his last couple of games. No matter where he's been deployed, Byfuglien has been exceptional this season, producing 15 goals, 42 points, 118 PIM, and a plus-8 rating. He'll have a legitimate shot at finishing the season with career-best marks in all four categories.

Jets' Byfuglien Heading Back To Forward

News: Dustin Byfuglien will return to forward for Tuesday's game against the Stars, Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien has delivered his best production this season while playing at defenseman, but injuries to Mathieu Perreault (lower body) and Blake Wheeler (undisclosed) have the Jets short on high-end talent at the wing. As a result, Byfuglien will slot in on the Jets' second line, joining Mark Scheifele and Drew Stafford. How long Byfuglien remains at forward will likely be dictated by how much time Wheeler will be forced to miss due to the injury.

Jets' Byfuglien Staying On Blue Line

News: Dustin Byfuglien will continue to slot in as a defenseman for Thursday's game against the Capitals, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: The Jets lost Mathieu Perreault and Drew Stafford to injuries in their previous game Monday in Edmonton, but with Stafford slated to return Thursday, coach Paul Maurice won't have to do too much tinkering with his lineup. As a result, Dustin Byfuglien will be able to remain at his preferred spot on defense, where he's been a surprisingly more productive scorer on the season. He'll stick with usual defensive partner Ben Chiarot.

Jets' Byfuglien Grabs Two Assists In Win

News: Dustin Byfuglien picked up two assists in Saturday's 5-4 shootout win over the Red Wings.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien has moved back to defense the last two games and has continued to excel, contributing three assists and nine shots on goal during that time. He'll of course hold more value in leagues where he's eligible on defense, but outside of shallow formats, it's probably still justifiable to roster him at forward. He's been that good while playing on the blue line this season.

Jets Moving Byfuglien Back To Defense

News: Coach Paul Maurice confirmed Wednesday that Dustin Byfuglien will move back to defense for Thursday's game against the Predators.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien has jockeyed between forward and defense all season, but had seen most of his time at the former position over the last week. However, he had tallied two of his three points in Sunday's game and Tuesday's game-winning goal while playing on the blue line, where he's surprisingly noticed his most productivity this season. Over 25 games while playing on defense, Byfuglien has racked up seven goals and 22 points, compared to seven goals and 15 assists in 31 games at forward. For leagues where Byfuglien is eligible at defenseman, he should remain among the very best fantasy contributors.

Byfuglien's OT Goal Lifts Jets To Win

News: Dustin Byfuglien scored with a minute left in overtime Tuesday to deliver a 2-1 win over Minnesota.
Analysis: That's the second straight game finding twine for Dustin Byfuglien, who'd been held scoreless for four in a row before finding his stride again. He remains one of the better defensive plays in fantasy, even when he's playing forward.

Byfuglien Powers Jets With Three Points

News: Dustin Byfuglien scored a power-play goal, had two assists and recorded a team-high six shots on goal in Sunday's win over Colorado.
Analysis: A strong outing from Big Buff, who had been held scoreless in his last four games. Currently playing forward, the 29-year-old is a great own in almost all formats. With 101 PIM, 166 shots on goal, 13 goals, 164 hits and a plus-8 rating, there really aren't many fantasy categories Dustin Byfuglien isn't contributing in. Whatever position he plays, he'll find a way to produce, so make sure he's in your lineup every game.

Jets' Byfuglien Still Practicing At Forward

News: Dustin Byfuglien again practiced at forward Friday, Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien played as a forward during Tuesday's game against the Canucks, and he has practiced up front all week. With Evander Kane (shoulder) still sidelined, Byfuglien figures to again work as a forward in Friday's game against the Blackhawks.

Jets' Byfuglien Practicing At Forward

News: Dustin Byfuglien continued to practice at forward Thursday while Evander Kane (undisclosed) was absent, Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien reentered the lineup at forward during Tuesday's game in Vancouver after Kane was made a surprising healthy scratch. There's speculation that Kane may be under some sort of internal suspension, so it's tough to tell at this juncture how long Byfuglien will remain at forward. The move back to defense early in December seemed to revitalize Byfuglien, who earned an All-Star nod after posting eight goals and 16 assists over January and February. Ideally, the Jets would utilize Byfuglien on their top defensive pairing to give them an elite puck-mover at the back end.

Jets' Byfuglien Collects 14 PIM In Loss

News: Dustin Byfuglien picked up 14 PIM in Saturday's loss to the Stars.
Analysis: Dustin Byfuglien is contributing in almost every fantasy category, racking up 12 goals, 33 points, 97 PIM, 152 shots on goal, and a plus-8 rating in 51 games this season. Averaging a whopping 23:05 of ice time, Big Buff is a great fantasy play in almost all formats. Keep him rolling.
