2008-09 Fantasy Hockey Mock Draft

By | Fantasy Writer

The skates have been sharpened. The sticks have been taped up. The Zamboni is churning across the ice.

That's right puck fans, hockey is back and that means Fantasy Hockey is also in full swing.

For your viewing pleasure, and also as a guide for Fantasy owners, we recently conducted a draft for the 2008-09 CBSSports.com Experts Fantasy Hockey League.

The following draft should give you a idea of where we think certain players will be drafted.

The scoring system we used:

For Skaters: Goals (three points), Defenseman Goals (two-point bonus), Assists (two points), Defenseman Assists (one-point bonus), Plus/Minus (one point or minus-1 point), Power Play Goals (two points), Short-Handed Goals (one point) and Penalty Minutes (0.25 points per minute)

For Goalies: Wins (five points), Shutouts (three-point bonus), Saves (0.2 points per save), Goals Against (minus-1 point) and Penalty Minutes (0.25 points per minute)

Here was the lineup for the 2008-09 Experts League (draft order):

  • Erin Brown -- Producer, Hockey
  • Mihai Cercel -- Newsroom Staff Editor
  • Jeff Lippman -- Fantasy Writer
  • Chris Soblotne -- Product Manager, Hockey
  • Michael Hurcomb -- Fantasy Writer
  • Michael Levine -- Product Manager, Fantasy Sports
  • Ross Devonport -- Senior Fantasy Writer
  • Greg Cimilluca -- Production Manager
  • Sergio Gonzalez -- Fantasy Writer
  • Eric Mack -- Senior Fantasy Writer
  • Louis Miller -- Senior Software Engineer
  • Peter Madden -- Managing Editor, Fantasy Sports

Rosters consist of 17 players, with 12 starters at the following positions: Center (3), Wings (3), Defenseman (4) and Goalies (2).

Miikka Kiprusoff
Kiprusoff Carries Flames To Home Win
Miikka Kiprusoff, G, CGY
12:54 PM
News: Miikka Kiprusoff won for the 25th time this season Saturday, stopping 29 shots in regulation and overtime and then stuffing Vancouver's Mason Raymond to cap a 3-2 shootout victory.
Analysis: His 25-17-4 record seems to involve some smoke, mirrors, and a little bit of wizardry, as the Calgary attack isn't exactly fearsome. He's 3-0-1 in his last four starts, and is a solid start recommendation when the Flames host Toronto on Tuesday night.

Henrik Lundqvist
Rangers Stick With Lundqvist
Henrik Lundqvist, G, NYR
7:45 AM
News: Henrik Lundqvist will start in net for the Rangers on Sunday against the Capitals, the Bergen Record's Andrew Gross reports.
Analysis: Henrik Lundqvist, who is tied with Brian Elliot for the NHL lead in save percentage (.939), will remain in the net for the Rangers on Sunday after backstopping the team's 5-2 victory over the Flyers on Saturday, while stopping 31 shots in the process.

P.K. Subban
Montreal's Subban Gets More From Less
P.K. Subban, D, MON
6:30 AM
News: P.K. Subban had an assist Saturday night while skating 20:36 in Montreal's 5-0 win over Toronto.
Analysis: Montreal interim head coach Randy Cunneyworth has been cutting back P.K. Subban's ice time of late, which has translated into a plus-5 in the previous five games. He is averaging 23:36 per game for the season, but has played less than that in four of the past five. The one exception being the game against the Penguins that was decided in a shootout.

Mathieu Darche
Darches Gets Two Points In Montreal Win
Mathieu Darche, LW, MON
6:19 AM
News: Mathieu Darche had a goal and an assist Saturday night in Montreal's 5-0 win over Toronto.
Analysis: Mathieu Darche has played well of late is averaging just under 20 minutes a game in the last five games, the last four of which have been wins.

Rene Bourque
Bourque Tallies In Montreal Win
Rene Bourque, LW, MON
6:15 AM
News: Rene Bourque scored a goal in Montreal's 5-0 win over Toronto on Saturday.
Analysis: Rene Bourque hadn't found the back of the net since before the All-Star break and the goal was his first point in five games. The Canadiens have been able to win four straight without getting significant contributions from the winger, but he played well Saturday, skating on a new line with Tomas Plekanec and Mathieu Darche, both of whom have played well in the winning streak.

Travis Moen
Habs Scratch Moen
Travis Moen, LW, MON
6:08 AM
News: Travis Moen was scratched from Saturday night's game in Toronto.
Analysis: There has been no indication of an injury for Travis Moen, who played 19:15 in the previous game.

Jamie Langenbrunner
Blues' Langenbrunner In Top Six
Jamie Langenbrunner, RW, STL
5:52 AM
News: Injuries to Jason Arnott (shoulder) and Matt D'Agostini (head) resulted in Jamie Langenbrunner skating on the second line Saturday night in St. Louis' win over Colorado.
Analysis: Jamie Langenbrunner played a season-high 17:24 in the win, but had little to show for it. With the Blues' anticipating Andy McDonald's return from a concussion Sunday night, we suspect Langenbrunner will be back to third-line duty.

Patrik Berglund
Berglund Involved In Blues' Win
Patrik Berglund, C, STL
5:44 AM
News: Patrik Berglund assisted on Carlo Colaiacovo's overtime goal Saturday night to give the Blues a 3-2 win over the Avalanche. The assists gives him one point in each of the previous three games.
Analysis: That makes two straight games in which Patrik Berglund was prominent in a St. Louis win. On Thursday, he scored the game-tying goal in a shootout win over New Jersey. And on Saturday, his drive from just inside the blue line was deflected in by Colaiacovo. More than anyone on the team, Berglund can get down on himself when things aren't going his way, so perhaps this little shot of confidence will carry him forward. We were expecting more than 23 points from Berglund this season.

Carlo Colaiacovo
Colaiacovo Give Blues OT Win
Carlo Colaiacovo, D, STL
5:32 AM
News: Carlo Colaiacovo deflected Patrik Berglund's shot into the net for the game-winning goal in St. Louis' 3-2 overtime win over Colorado on Saturday.
Analysis: It was just the second goal of the season for Carlo Colaiacovo and his first points since his three-assist game against Edmonton on Jan. 5.

Ian Cole
Blues' Cole Plays Saturday
Ian Cole, D, STL
5:23 AM
News: Ian Cole filled in for Kris Russell (flu) and played 12:47 in Saturday's overtime win over the Avalanche.
Analysis: Ian Cole was called up from Peoria of the American Hockey League in time to play Saturday. Russell shouldn't miss too much time, so we're looking for Cole to head back to the AHL within a few days.
