Neutral Zone Wrap: A hot and cold beginning

  •

After weeks of wading through varying degrees of nonsense, we're back to the standard subject matter. And while you may not realize it yet, you'll be glad we started the team trends later than normal.

If we've learned anything from the past, it's that early stats can often mislead us -- and make us believe ideas that aren't true. In reality, not many people wanted to hear about Matt Cooke's goal scoring prowess or Johan Hedberg's run for the Vezina. Except maybe for friends and family of these two individuals. Or those in really deep keeper leagues.

Since this marks the inaugural review, we'll be looking at what teams have started hot and which ones can't do anything right. You can decide who belongs in what group.

NOTE: Throughout the season, the following will generally be based on information ending with Wednesday night games – unless stated otherwise.

If you were to peg one franchise from the Sunshine State for improvement, it would have to be Florida.

The reports of Brian Campbell's demise were definitely premature, thanks to his role in the Panthers' league-leading eight power-play goals (assists on six of them). Kris Versteeg has also benefited with the extra man (five of his seven points), while fellow newcomer Tomas Fleischmann looks to be comfortable on the top line.

Unfortunately, other recruits Sean Bergenheim (one goal) and Scottie Upshall (no points, minus-4) haven't fared as advertised. Jose Theodore (2.47 GAA, .920 save percentage, one shutout) may be the starter for now, but it won't be long until 2008 draftee Jacob Markstrom (solid NHL debut on Tuesday) takes control.

The Avalanche, unlike their name, are not in the process of falling. After a tough loss at home to Detroit, Colorado has gone on to five straight road victories. One would assume either Matt Duchene (three goals) or Paul Stastny (four goals) would be leading the club in scoring. It's early, so that honor currently rests with the quartet of David Jones, Milan Hejduk, Ryan O'Reilly, and Erik Johnson (all with five).

Rookie Gabriel Landeskog (three goals, but leads with 23 shots on goal and second with 13 hits) doesn't look out of place on the pro ice. And take note Kyle Quincey (three goals, 10 PIM) is back and grabbing his share of the power play ice time. Both goalies have shown their skills, but the Avs invested too much in Semyon Varlamov (2.17 GAA, .940 goals-against average, one shutout) to let him sit on the bench.

Edmonton has been offensively anemic (10 goals in six games), but is surprisingly solid on the back end. The exception to the former lies in the twin No. 1 tandem of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (five goals, including a hat trick) and Taylor Hall (four goals). Ryan Smyth (three goals, 21 PIM) looks as if he hasn't left the Prairies, but Magnus Paajarvi and Linus Omark (both at zero) appear to be preparing for their joint vacation ... in the press box.

Welcome back, Ryan Whitney (out since December after ankle surgery). But beware of Corey Potter (two power play assists in three games since being called up), who is stealing minutes and looks to be the Oilers' new man-advantage specialist. Devan Dubnyk or Nikolai Khabibulin? Don't judge by the early figures, but Edmonton may ride the Khabby Train (started two of six, but only allowed two goals combined) until it breaks down again.

Another club experiencing trouble scoring is Boston, as they have managed a whopping 11 goals in six outings. The problem is they blew seven of them in their two wins while wasting many opportunities in defeat. Without David Krejci (abdomen issue, could be back within a game or two), Tyler Seguin (leads with five) has assumed pivot duties on the first unit and hasn't disappointed.

Rich Peverley (three goals) is certainly earning those new dollar bills while Brad Marchand (four goals, 20 PIM) has filled the stat sheet from both ends. Don't blame Milan Lucic (one goal, 14 PIM) for a slow start, but you may want to look at why Zdeno Chara (nothing but 25 PIM) seems to have stalled at the starting gate. And yet another goaltending battle is Bruin, er, brewing as old man Tim Thomas (1.98 goals-against average, .930 save percentage in four games) will continue to fend off young whippersnapper Tuukka Rask (2.52, .920 in two games) by trying to shoo him off the lawn.

Montreal have thrown the puck often at the opposition (first in NHL averaging just under 35 shots a night), but haven't been getting the results (only one win in five).

Mike Cammalleri (leg injury, returns Thursday) is proving to be a key commodity out of the lineup. The kids are doing all right, namely Max Pacioretty (five goals) and David Desharnais (three, but receiving more power-play opportunities).

Want to know who isn't doing OK? Erik Cole and his one goal, that's who. Proving once again that you can take the boy out of the man, but don't you dare take the Cole away from the (Eric) Staal.

And with Andrei Markov's (post-knee surgery complications) immediate future up in the air, the Swiss blue line duo of Yannick Weber and Raphael Diaz (both at two goals) have impressed so far.

And while we've detailed the goings-on between the pipes the previous four paragraphs, there's no need to do the same here. Carey Price (2.78 goals-against average, .890 save percentage playing every minute), your job is safe.

Player News
Derek MacKenzie
Blue Jackets' MacKenzie's Contract Pending Physical
Derek MacKenzie, C, CLB
5/26/2012
News: Derek MacKenzie (concussion) re-signed with the Blue Jackets on Saturday, and his contract will be official once he passes a physical, the Columbus Dispatch's Aaron Portzline reports.
Analysis: Derek MacKenzie missed the last 16 games of the year after suffering a concussion, but it sounds like he is recovering well. Terms of the contract are not yet available. He had 14 points last season and 23 in 2010-11.

Chris Bourque
Bruins Acquire Ray Bourque's Son
Chris Bourque, LW, WAS
5/26/2012
News: Chris Bourque was acquired by the Bruins in exchange for Zach Hamill on Saturday, the Globe and Mail's James Mirtle reports.
Analysis: Chris Bourque lit up the AHL during the 2011-12 season with 93 points in 73 games. He should be ready for the NHL this year, but is not a guarantee to make the Bruins' roster. He doesn't have Zach Hamill's upside, but does have a better track record in the AHL.

Zach Hamill
Caps Acquire Hamill For Ray Bourque's Son
Zach Hamill, C, BOS
5/26/2012
News: Zach Hamill was acquired by the Capitals on Saturday in exchange for Chris Bourque, the Globe and Mail's James Mirtle reports.
Analysis: Zach Hamill was the eighth overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, but has not lived up to expectations so far. He scored 43 points (nine goals, 34 assists) in 68 games at the AHL level last season and had one assist in three NHL games with the Bruins. Hamill should compete for a roster spot with the Caps, but could also be headed back to the AHL for further seasoning.

Simon Gagne
Kings' Gagne Back At Practice But Return Uncertain
Simon Gagne, LW, LA
5/26/2012
News: Simon Gagne (concussion) was back at practice and a return to the Kings hasn't been ruled out, the Mercury News reports.
Analysis: "Well, we're still playing, so he got an opportunity to practice with us," said coach Darryl Sutter. "You need lots of live ammo. Somebody asked (about Simon Gagne's availability) a week or so ago, and there was no chance then, because he hadn't even skated with the team. All you do is improve your (chances). You go from zero to whatever." Gagne would seem like an unlikely insertion into the lineup given the Kings' run so far this postseason, but he could work his way back into the lineup if the Kings fall behind in the series or one of the regulars sustains an injury.

Roberto Luongo
No Trade Demands From Canucks' Luongo; Still Probably On Move
Roberto Luongo, G, VAN
5/26/2012
News: Canucks general manager Mike Gillis reiterated Friday that Roberto Luongo has not asked for a trade, the Vancouver Sun reports.
Analysis: Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said Roberto Luongo had asked for a trade during an interview Thursday night, but Gillis was quick to deny those claims. Gillis did admit that Luongo is open to a trade and the team would try to move him this summer, so it's all semantics at this point. Expect Luongo to be wearing a new sweater come the fall.

Ilya Kovalchuk
Kovalchuk Carries Devils Into Finals
Ilya Kovalchuk, LW, NJ
5/26/2012
News: Ilya Kovalchuk had five points in the final three games of the Eastern Conference finals, registering a goal in Game 6; he now leads the NHL in playoff scoring.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk snagged four assists over the last three games as well, as he helped guide the Devils to the Stanley Cup Finals. He's been arguably one of the best players in the NHL this postseason and in a position of consideration for the Conn Smythe Trophy. Expect him to be active against the Kings during the Stanley Cup Finals.

Stephen Gionta
Devils' Gionta Finshes Conference Finals Strong
Stephen Gionta, RW, NJ
5/26/2012
News: Stephen Gionta had a goal and two assists in the last two games of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Analysis: Stephen Gionta and his linemates, Steve Bernier and Ryan Carter, gave the Rangers fits in the final two games of the series, posting the opening goal in Games 5 and 6 as well as the winning goal in Game 5. Look for this trio to see close to 10 minutes of ice time per game in the Finals.

Martin Brodeur
Brodeur Leads Devils To Victory Friday
Martin Brodeur, G, NJ
5/26/2012
News: Martin Brodeur stopped 33 of 35 shots Friday night to help lead the Devils to a 3-2 overtime win over the Rangers and a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Analysis: The 40-year-old netminder has been reborn in these playoffs and looks as good as he's ever been. In 18 playoff games this year, Martin Brodeur has a 12-5 record with a 2.04 GAA and a .923 SV% including one shutout.

Adam Henrique
Devils' Henrique Scores Winner In Overtime Friday
Adam Henrique, C, NJ
5/26/2012
News: Adam Henrique scored the game-winning goal at the 1:03 mark of overtime as the Devils downed the Rangers 3-2 on Friday to take the Eastern Conference Finals, four games to two.
Analysis: The rookie center has had a solid playoff run so far with three goals and eight assists in 18 games. Henrqiue and the Devils will square off against the Kings in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Wednesday night. Two of Adam Henrique's three goals in the playoffs are overtime winners.

Hal Gill
Preds' Gill Has Fractured Tibia
Hal Gill, D, NSH
5/25/2012
News: Hal Gill had a plate screwed onto his fractured tibia two weeks ago, the Montreal Gazette's Dave Stubbs reports.
Analysis: Hal Gill was on crutches earlier in the week. Gill is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and he is expected to be back to full health at some point during the summer.
