Panthers report: Inside shots
After getting two straight shutouts from Tomas Vokoun, the Panthers have new questions about their goaltending going into Thursday's game at Boston. The Panthers got bombarded by a depleted Washington team this weekend, losing a pair of games to the division leader by a combined 11-5. The Panthers lost 4-1 on Friday at home and gave up a third-period lead Saturday in a 7-4 loss. Vokoun was coming off shutouts of St. Louis and Carolina, but Washington was able to get three goals against him Friday. Saturday, backup Scott Clemmensen got the start and gave up two goals in the first two periods before surrendering five in the third as the Capitals came back to win at home. Clemmensen's play in Florida hasn't been what the Panthers hoped, although Florida's defense isn't to be confused with what Clemmensen had in front of him in New Jersey last season. The Florida defense that had been so good in recent games let the Capitals sweep in Saturday and find plenty of open space behind and in front of the net. The Panthers signed Clemmensen to a three-year deal on July 1 just hours after Craig Anderson bolted for a starting gig in Colorado. Clemmensen played terrific in place of Martin Brodeur last season, but he hasn't found his stride in Florida just yet. In four games with the Panthers, Clemmensen has given up 16 goals. Florida has lost six games this season by three goals or more. CAPITALS 7, PANTHERS 4: The Panthers held a lead on the Capitals for the first time this season, but Washington came out firing in the third period and scored five goals in the final 20 minutes to beat the Panthers for the second straight night. The Panthers got goals from different places as Dmitry Kulikov and Michal Repik got their first goals of the season (for Kulikov, his career). Florida also got goals from Michael Frolik and Cory Stillman. But the Panthers were porous defensively and backup goalie Scott Clemmensen struggled for a third straight start. Clemmensen gave up five goals on 16 shots in the third period, and his seven goals came on 32 shots. Copyright (C) 2009 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved.
