If there is one position the Seminoles have absolutely locked up right now that is quarterback with Christian Ponder holding firmly onto the reigns. In one breath, Ponder is mentioned in the same sentence with former FSU Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward as Ward is the only Seminole to rush for more yards in a season than Ponder did last year as a sophomore with 423. Ponder added four rushing touchdowns and became only the fourth FSU quarterback to ever score touchdowns in four consecutive games. Unfortunately for Ponder, he's also going to be asked to throw the ball a little bit, and he struggled doing that. He completed 177 passes last year for 2,006 yards and 14 touchdowns but also was picked off 13 times. Ponder is one year older, yes, but he'll be without his two top receivers from last year -- Preston Parker and Greg Carr are no longer on the roster -- and the third-best option is out through the spring with a ruptured Achilles'. His ability to run with the football ranked him 76th in the nation last year among quarterbacks in total offense, and we expect similar production this season, making Ponder worthy of a draft pick in later rounds but nothing more. According to The St. Petersburg Times , Ponder (right shoulder) is "pretty set" on coming back for his senior season. He also said that Bobby Bowden's retirement does not affect his plans.
