Mike Kafka is finally expected to regain the starting quarterback position for Northwestern after serving as a backup the last two seasons to C.J. Bacher. Kafka started the first four games in 2006 before going down with an injured hamstring. Bacher then eventually took over under center and only relinquished the job when he was injured. Bacher graduated after a disappointing senior season, and Kafka proved during the spring he is still a better option than Dan Persa. Head coach Pat Fitzgerald is eager to see Kafka start as he gives the Wildcats' spread offense their first true dual-threat quarterback since Zak Kustok led Northwestern to a share of the Big Ten title in 2000. Kafka will be dealing with an unproven receiving core as Northwestern's top four receivers from 2008 also graduated. Kafka appeared in eight games last season, starting two. He completed 32-of-46 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns while ranking second on the team with 321 rushing yards. He added one rushing score. Consider Kafka nothing more than a low-end Fantasy flier for the deepest of leagues to begin the season. (Updated 6/10/09)
