Astros SS Jed Lowrie begins swinging fungo bat

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(6/29/15) Astros shortstop Jed Lowrie has progressed from swinging a waffle ball bat to a fungo, reports the Houston Chronicle.

Lowrie is trying to comeback from surgery on his right thumb. He has been sidelined since April 27. Lowrie has also been able to take grounders and conduct light throwing sessions.

Astros SS Jed Lowrie to start fielding grounders this weekend

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/18/15) Astros shortstop Jed Lowrie will start fielding grounders during a three-game series in Seattle this weekend, manager A.J. Hinch said Thursday. Lowrie has been doing very light throwing, per MLB.com.

Lowrie has been sidelined since late April due to torn ligaments in his right thumb. He underwent surgery in early May.

GM: Jed Lowrie will remain big contributor to Astros

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/7/15) The promotion of Astros prized prospect Carlos Correa from the minors has the status of injured shortstop Jed Lowrie up in the air.

General manager Jeff Luhnow said he spoke with Lowrie on Sunday and confirmed to him that he will remain a big part of the team upon his return from a thumb injury, per MLB.com. He is expected back around the All-Star break.

Lowrie has played every infield position in his career. But the team is now set at second (Jose Altuve) and short (Correa). He could take over at third, where Luis Valbuena is batting .184 despite 12 home runs.

Astros place Deduno on 15-day DL, transfer Lowrie to 60-day DL

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/18/15) The Astros placed pitcher Samuel Deduno on the 15-day disabled list and transferred shortstop Jed Lowrie to the 60-day disabled list on Monday, the team announced.

Deduno is dealing with a lower back strain, ROOT Sports reports. He didn't suffer the injury during his last relief outing but came in sore the day after pitching, the Houston Chronicle reports. He's posted a 6.86 ERA and 17:9 K:BB ratio in 21 innings.

Lowrie had surgery on his thumb earlier this month. If he meets the earliest part of his timetable for recovery, he'll likely be back around the All-Star break.

The moves open spots on the 25-man and 40-man roster for Monday's starting pitcher Lance McCullers.

Astros SS Jed Lowrie learning how to live with bandaged hand

by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(5/11/15) Astros shortstop Jed Lowrie said his recent surgery on his right thumb went well and that the tough part is going without the use of the hand while it's bandaged, according to the Houston Chronicle

“All things considered, surgery went well,” Lowrie said.

Lowrie underwent surgery April 30 to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb.

“I think that’s the hardest thing. As you can see, I got lasagna stains on [the bandage],” Lowrie said. “There’s some things that you just wouldn’t think about."
