Rangers' Yovani Gallardo evens record with win
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(4/11/15) Rangers starter Yovani Gallardo evened his record at 1-1, earning the win in a 6-2 victory over Houston.
Gallardo allowed two runs in five and two thirds innings. He allowed eight hits, including a solo home run by Marwin Gonzalez. Gallardo walked one and struck out seven. Gallardo threw 90 pitches, 61 for strikes and lowered his ERA to 5.59.
"He really took control of the game for the most part," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "He threw strikes and had his slider and his changeup in play, and gave us the opportunity to get off the field quickly at times and get our hitters to the plate."
Gallardo's next start is Friday against Toronto and J.A. Happ.
Rangers pitcher Yovani Gallardo roughed up for four runs Monday
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(4/7/15) Rangers starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo allowed four runs on six hits in just four innings of work in Monday's 8-0 loss to the Athletics.
Gallardo, who also had five strikeouts and just one walk, was tagged early and often, allowing an opening triple to Sam Fuld followed by a home run to Ben Zobrist. Gallardo then surrendered two more runs in the fourth after allowing two hits and a passed ball.
He will look to get back on track Saturday against the Astros in Texas.
Rangers' Yovani Gallardo to start Opening Day
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(3/26/15) Rangers pitcher Yovani Gallardo has been chosen for the team's Opening Day start April 6 at Oakland, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Gallardo will make his debut for the Rangers on Opening Day after spending the last eight seasons with the Brewers. He went 8-11 with a 3.51 ERA and 146:54 K:BB ratio in 192 1/3 innings last season. Gallardo has struggled this spring, surrendering 13 earned runs in 10 1/3 innings while striking out six and walking six.
|2014 summary: After coming to know him as an occasionally erratic, high-strikeout but also high-walk guy over the years, Yovani Gallardo's 2014 performance gave reason to wonder just what kind of pitcher he is going forward. He went from thriving with a reduced strikeout rate in April to struggling with a reduced strikeout in May to thriving with an improved walk rate in June, July and August to struggling again in September. So does that make him an occasionally erratic, low-strikeout but perhaps also low-walk guy?|
Playing time status: Though he's been a top-of-the-rotation pitcher for most of his career, Gallardo usually falls short of 200 innings. In the past, you could blame his inefficient style of pitching, but now maybe just inconsistency. The Brewers decided he should be the odd man out of a rotation lacking a true ace, shipping him to the Rangers this offseason.
2015 outlook: Even if you could still count on Gallardo for a strikeout per inning, his value wouldn't be what it once was in Fantasy now that starting pitching as a whole has improved so much, and his new surroundings won't change that. His ERA and WHIP are both on the high side for a mixed-league pitcher, so when you factor in the low strikeout rate, the main reason he'll be drafted in those formats is name value.
