|Brett Gardner front and center for exhibition game |
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
(2/25/14) Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner is set to bat leadoff during the team's exhibition game Tuesday.
It's the first spring game of the season for the club. Gardner is one of the few regulars getting a start in the game. He recently signed a four-year extension with the club, so it might be a case of the team showing off its new signee. Gardner will likely be lifted after a few at-bats.
Last year, Gardner hit .273/.344/.416 in 539 at-bats.

|Brett Gardner: I'm alright in left |
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
(2/19/14) The switch from center to left has not been difficult mentally or physically for Brett Gardner. The move was necessitated by the addition of Jacoby Ellsbury, who will take over in center for the Yankees.
"I feel comfortable over there," Gardner told MLB.com. "I told [Joe Girardi] I can play right too if he needs me to. I'll do whatever I'm needed to do to help the team win. ... Having (Ellsbury) over here makes us a better team. I'm happy to play alongside of him and learn from him, and he's obviously a really good baserunner. We're kind of the same type of player."
The signing of Ellsbury launched trade rumors involving Gardner. But those discussions, which included a possible swap with Cincinnati for second baseman Brandon Phillips, have died down.
|Brett Gardner assured of a spot |
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
(2/6/14) Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner was surprised when the team went out and signed Jacoby Ellsbury, but he's not worried about his job, according to the Star-Ledger.
Gardner spoke with manager Joe Girardi in late December, who told him he had a spot on the team, though it will likely be in left field. The team already has Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran, Alfonso Soriano and Ichiro Suzuki for four potential spots. After they signed Ellsbury, there was some speculation Gardner would be moved for a pitcher, but it never came to pass. While it's possible Gardner will be moved before the start of the season, it appears he'll play a big role if he remains with the club this year.

The outfield position will pose plenty of challenges for owners of Draft Day. Our Scott White shares his winning strategies and tiers for owners to consider.
|Brett Gardner had a better year than you may have realized in2013, after missing nearly all of 2012 with an elbow injury. While he stole just 24 bases (after racking up an average of 48 in 2010 and 2011), Gardner led the league in triples, hit a career-best 33 doubles and eight home runs (which contributed to a career-high .416 slugging percentage), and his .273 average was slightly above his career mark (.268). Heading into 2014, Gardner can safely be relied on for a .270-ish average with a handful of home runs, and about 60 doubles and steals combined. Add it all up, and he makes for a decent late-round pick in most formats.
