Yankees' Brett Gardner jumps over wall to make catch Saturday
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(3/21/15) Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner made a terrific catch Saturday, jumping over the outfield wall to make the play. Manager Joe Girardi was no fan of Gardner's effort in a spring training game.
"Oh, god, please don't get hurt," Girardi said of what he thought as the play happened. "I told him, 'Gardy, this isn't Little League. Don't do that again.'"
Gardner was unscathed after the play and thought Girardi overreacted a bit.
"I didn't think it was that big a deal," he said. "Everybody liked it, I thought. But whatever."
Gardner was planning on making a play like that at some point.
"Well, we've been working on pace of game in spring training, and Chris Young was like, 'You think I'm going to have to jump over there?,'" Gardner said. "So I said, 'If you're not going to, I am.' Otherwise, we're going to be waiting 10 minutes for someone to go all the way around and get your glove. We'd be in the eighth inning still if I didn't go get it."
Yankees looking to bat Ellsbury, Gardner atop lineup
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(3/3/15) Yankees manager Joe Girardi could use outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner in the first two spots of the lineup regularly in 2015, MLB.com reports.
"It's definitely a possibility," Girardi said. "I think that both of them are capable of leading off. Ells has done it a little more in his career than Gardy, but I just kind of like the combination of those two guys together."
The Yankees slotted the two outfielders atop the team's first Grapefruit League lineup Tuesday afternoon. With the retirement of shortstop Derek Jeter leaving the second slot open, Ellsbury and Gardner have the opportunity to show what they can do back-to-back.
"We'll take a look at it a lot this spring as we try to keep the outfielders together a lot early on and the infielders together, just to see how it works," Girardi said. "Left-handed, right-handed, in my mind right now, I'm not really worried either way."
The two outfielders combined for 60 stolen bases in 2014, and Girardi indicated that he'd like to see the pair continue to pressure opposing pitchers.

|(11/5/14) Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner has revealed that he recently underwent minor sports hernia surgery and should be 100 percent in about a week, per MLB Network Radio.
Gardner is coming off another strong season in which he compiled a stat line of .256/.327/.422 and scored 87 runs.
Brett Gardner returns to action for final game of doubleheader

|(9/13/14) Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner returned to action in Game 2 of a doubleheader Friday night at Baltimore. He went 1 for 3 with a walk and two strikeouts in a 5-0 defeat. He is hitting .269/.343/.441 with 16 homers and 56 RBI over 501 at-bats.
Yankees trio still sidelined Friday
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(9/12/14) The Yankees are still sans three starters for the first game of their doubleheader Friday against the Orioles. Outfielders Brett Gardner (abdomen) and Carlos Beltran (elbow) and third baseman Chase Headley (face) are all out.
Beltran could be done for the season.
|2014 summary: As the Yankees' primary leadoff hitter, Brett Gardner posted his fourth season with at least 80 runs and 20 steals within the last five years. In his seventh major league season, Gardner did something new for Fantasy owners: hit double-digit home runs. The extra power, in the form of 17 homers, helped Gardner to drive in a career-high 58 runs and finish as a top 30 outfielder for the first time since 2011.|
Playing time status: Gardner's 141 starts in the outfield last season were a career high, and he stands to get at least as much playing time this season.
2015 outlook: Gardner's power burst gave him enough production to serve ably as a No. 2 outfielder in standard mixed leagues, but between his track record and the fact that he wasn't hitting flies any farther than he had in previous seasons, it's best not to count on a repeat performance. He's not a big-time base-stealer anymore either, so Gardner is not a lock to be among the 40 most productive outfielders in 2015. It could be a reach to take him before the middle-to-late rounds.
