Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw strikes out nine vs. Giants

by R.J. White |
(4/23/15) Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, giving up two earned runs on three hits and one walk in six innings while racking up nine strikeouts in his team's 3-2 loss to the Giants.

Kershaw saw two runs come across in the third inning but was in top form for the remainder of the game. He appeared to be headed for a loss before Alex Guerrero evened the game with a seventh-inning home run.

Kershaw owns a 4.07 ERA and 35:7 K:BB ratio in 24 1/3 innings across four starts. He's scheduled to face the Giants again Monday.

Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw strikes out 12 Friday

by Sean d'Oliveira |
(4/18/15) Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw struck out a season-high 12 batters and only walked one during Friday's win over the Rockies.

Kershaw surrendered three runs (one earned) on six hits over six innings of work to earn the win. Kershaw's lone blemish were home runs to Troy Tulowitzki and Charlie Blackmon. He was able to lower his ERA from 5.84 to 4.42. Kershaw (1-1) has yet to throw more than seven innings in any of his three starts this season.

His next expected start will be Wednesday at San Francisco.

Pitch framing has Dodgers aces, catcher A.J. Ellis talking

by Marty Gitlin |
(4/17/15) The new emphasis on pitch framing as a possible valuable skill for catchers has spurred debate among players at that position, as well as the pitchers who throw to them.

Among those who have entered into the conversation is Dodgers standout right-hander Zack Greinke, who is known as a sophisticated analysist, but is not convinced that pitch framing is a skill set that can make or break a catcher.

"I believe that some catchers are better at framing pitches," Greinke told the Orange County Register. "But I'm not a believer that it's as valuable as it's being made out to be. It's part of a catcher's skill set. It's not the most important part. Just because he frames good doesn't mean he's a good catcher."

Teammate and stud southpaw Clayton Kershaw takes a similar view.

"You just want strikes called strikes. ... I gues I'm in the middle," he offered. "I don't roll my eyes at it and I don't pay a whole lot of attention to it either."

Their catcher, A.J. Ellis, also didn't pay a whole lot of attention to it at one time. But he does now. Metrics that showed him lacking as a pitch framer, as well as the wave of the future, forced him to change his outlook.

"I was motivated by the realization that that aspect of catching was becoming highly valued by this new wave of analytical front-office types," said Ellis, who spent time in the offseason working on framing pitches. "And I know that deficiency in the long run could affect my future employment."

Ellis added that "every metric out there tells me that I'm very deficient in that area" and that the Dodgers front office personnel advised him of their awareness of it during spring training.

One must wonder what umpires think about the new pitch framing metric. After all, they believe they're calling a strike based on the zone rather than how a catcher frames the pitch.

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw roughed up in start Saturday

by Brandon Wise |
(4/11/15) Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw surrendered six runs, five earned, on 10 hits, including one home run, in 6 1/3 innings Saturday in Los Angeles' 6-0 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Kershaw started out in a jam in the first inning, allowing a run on three singles. Then in the fourth, Kershaw also allowed two walks and two singles, leading to two more runs. His ERA ballooned to 5.84 after the tough game.

He will look to get back on track Friday against the Rockies.

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw scheduled for root canal Monday

by Brandon Wise |
(4/8/15) Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to have a root canal performed Monday, according to the L.A. Times.

Kershaw, who is scheduled to start again on Sunday, is not expected to miss any time or have his pitching schedule adjusted because of the procedure. Kershaw started the year with a no decision last Monday, allowing three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts.
