|Daisuke Matsuzaka and John Lannan in lead for fifth spot |
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
(3/2/14) Mets pitchers Daisuke Matsuzaka and John Lannan are in the lead for the fifth spot in the team's rotation, according to ESPN.
Manager Terry Collins was direct with reporters, telling them the decision will come down to the two players. Lannan tossed 74 1/3 innings for the Phillies last season. Matsuzaka started three games with the club last season.
Collins did not include Jenrry Mejia in the conversation, which indicates he may no longer be in competition for a starting spot.

(3/1/14) Mets left-hander John Lannan took a positive step Saturday by throwing two scoreless innings against Miami. The lone hit off him was a Derek Dietrich double.
Lannan is battling for the fifth spot in the rotation. He is looking to regain the health and form that allowed him to win 10 games and record a solid 3.70 ERA for Washington in 2011.
|Veterans top bet for Mets last rotation spot - but not only bet |
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
(2/14/14) Terry Collins indicated Friday that he prefers a veteran to man the fifth starting spot for the Mets, per the New York Post. That bodes well for John Lannan and Daisuke Matsuzaka.
If neither steps up, however, promising right-hander Jenrry Mejia is a possibility. Mejia showed his first flashes of major league talent last season, compiling a 2.30 ERA in five starts and fanning 27 in 27 1/3 innings.
|John Lannan says he's healthy for the first time in years |
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
(1/28/14) Before undergoing surgery last year, Mets starting pitcher John Lannan said he had dealt with a balky left knee since 2011, per MLB.com. After trying to rehab the injury, Lannan decided it was finally time to have surgery.
"The only option there was to get it fixed," Lannan said, "and for me, it was probably the best thing to do."
Lannan, who will be in camp on a minor-league deal competing for the last spot in the Mets' rotation, said he's fully healthy for the first time in years. He has been throwing off a mound and going through all his regular baseball activities.
|John Lannan signs with Mets, will compete for final rotation spot |
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
(1/18/14) The Mets and pitcher John Lannan have come to terms on a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training on Saturday, according to ESPN New York.
Lannan will compete with Jenrry Mejia and other prospects for the final spot in the rotation. He suffered a partially torn tendon and underwent season-ending knee surgery in August, limiting him to only 14 starts for the Phillies in 2013. He went 3-6 with a 5.33 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 38:27 K:BB ratio over 74 1/3 innings of work.
|The Phillies signed John Lannan last season in hopes he would be able to be a stable presence at the back-end of the team's rotation. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out that way, as Lannan made only 14 starts due to injury. He would be done for the season by late August because of a knee injury. When Lannan was on the hill, the results weren't pretty. He went 3-6 with a 5.33 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 14 starts. He didn't even make it two innings in two of his starts. Lannan elected free agency in October and eventually signed a minor-league deal with the Mets in January. Lannan has had a winning record just once in seven MLB seasons. He's not a high-upside pitcher and can probably be left on waivers until he becomes a major-league regular again.
