Mets recall Daisuke Matsuzaka after demoting John Lannan
by Michael Hurcomb |
(4/16/14) The Mets announced Wednesday they demoted reliever John Lannan to Triple-A Las Vegas. The team recalled pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, who failed to land a spot in the team's rotation in spring training, from Las Vegas to take Lannan's roster spot.

Matsuzaka will work out of the team's bullpen, but he could be a backup option in case Jenrry Mejia (finger) misses his next start.

(3/27/14) The Mets have signed veteran right-hander John Lannan to their 40-man roster. It appears he has landed a spot in their bullpen.

Lannan has regressed since a strong 2011 season with Washington in which he compiled a 10-13 record and 3.70 ERA. He bottomed out in Philadelphia last season with a 3-6 record and 5.33 ERA in 14 starts.

Report: Daisuke Matsuzaka likely to be Mets' fifth starter
by Michael Hurcomb |
(3/18/14) Mets starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is projected to win the competition for the final spot in the team's rotation over John Lannan and Jenrry Mejia, according to ESPN. It appears Mejia is headed to Triple-A Las Vegas to begin the season, while Lannan might end up in the team's bullpen.
John Lannan gives up five runs in spring loss to Marlins
by Michael Hurcomb |
(3/17/14) Mets starting pitcher John Lannan might have hurt his chances at earning a spot in the team's rotation with a horrendous outing during a 10-7 loss Monday against the Marlins. The left-handed pitcher allowed five runs on eight hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings, while striking out one.

Lannan (0-2) got hit hard from the beginning Monday. He gave up two runs in the first inning on singles from Garrett Jones and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Lannan managed to escape the second inning without giving up a run after walking the first two batters. However, the Marlins came back with two more runs in the third inning on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia single and added another run in the fourth on a Reed Johnson home run.

Lannan's ERA jumped from 1.13 to 4.76. He had allowed just one earned run in eight innings coming into Monday's start.

John Lannan up to nine strikeouts in eight spring innings
by Michael Hurcomb |
(3/12/14) Mets starting pitcher John Lannan struck out a spring-high five batters Wednesday, but he still ended up with the loss, as St. Louis escaped with a 6-4 win. Lannan allowed two unearned runs on three hits, while not allowing a walk.

Lannan, who is competing for a spot in the team's rotation, has allowed four runs (one earned) through three appearances (two starts), which has resulted in an 1.13 ERA. He is up to nine strikeouts and hasn't issued a walk in eight innings.
