Setup man Jordan Walden used as closer Sunday in Cards' victory

by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(4/19/15) Cardinals setup-man Jordan Walden came on in the closer's role Sunday and threw a scoreless ninth inning against the Reds to collect his first save of the season.

"There's nothing like it," Walden said of pitching the ninth after the game, per MLB.com. "The mindset, you try not to [have it] be [different than another inning]. But the ninth inning is the ninth inning. The fans get into it more. Everybody is ready. You just want to finish the game. Adam [Wainwright] pitched a great game. I just wanted to get him the win."

Trevor Rosenthal, the regular closer for the Cardinals, needed 20 pitches on Saturday to record the save and was not used in Sunday's game.

Cardinals' Jordan Walden takes loss in relief

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(4/10/15) Cardinals reliever Jordan Walden took the loss, despite not allowing a hit, in a 5-4 game against the Reds on Friday.

Walden allowed two walks, two stolen bases and a sacrifice fly to break up a tie game in the eighth inning.

Walden recorded a strikeout and threw 11 strikes in 23 pitches.

Cardinals' Jordan Walden working to alter delivery

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(2/24/15) Cardinals pitcher Jordan Walden is working to alter his delivery this spring, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Walden has always displayed unorthodox mechanics. During his windup, he "jumps" off the ground. While this has been successful for Walden in the past, he has some concerns about the move. "I work on it every year to get rid of it and it does hurt me sometimes, too," Walden said. "I’m a big boy and jumping on my hip takes a toll on your body. It’s kind of hard to change it, but I’m trying to modify it so that I can play longer."

During camp, he's worked to try and tone down his jump. "I'm just trying to be softer on my front side," Walden said.

Manager Mike Matheny said the team won't ask Walden to alter anything about his delivery. "I don't want him hurting himself if you start making radical changes," Matheny said. "I don’t see us doing much tinkering until he needs it or wants it."

The 27-year-old posted a 2.88 ERA over 50 innings last year.

Cardinals lock up RHP Jordan Walden to two-year deal

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/23/14) The Cardinals announced they signed pitcher Jordan Walden to a two-year contract, avoiding arbitration. Walden will be locked up through 2016 and will have a club option for 2017.

The right-handed reliever was acquired from the Braves in November. The former closer for the Angels in 2011 went 0-2 with a 2.88 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and three saves in 58 appearances for Atlanta last season.

Braves acquire Miller from Cardinals in exchange for Heyward

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/17/14) The Braves and Cardinals announced a significant trade Monday afternoon. The Braves acquired starting pitcher Shelby Miller and pitcher Tyrell Jenkins from St. Louis in exchange for outfielder Jason Heyward and reliever Jordan Walden.

"It was very difficult to trade Jason, but deal was made to help us short-term and long-term," Braves president of baseball operations John Hart said. "This deal also improves us in an area where we are woefully, woefully thin -- our minor-league system."

Heyward had been mentioned in trade rumors leading up to Monday's deal. He is in the final year of his contract after signing a two-year extension in Feb. 2014. The 25-year-old outfielder is coming off a disappointing 2014 season. He hit .271 with a .384 slugging percentage, .735 OPS, 11 home runs, 26 doubles and 58 RBI in 149 games.

The 24-year-old Miller is also coming off a disappointing campaign. The once highly touted pitching prospect went 10-9 with a 3.74 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 32 appearances (31 starts). While he reached a career high in innings (183), Miller struggled with his command (3.6 BB/9) and saw his strikeout rate drop significantly (6.2 K/9).

"As we look at Shelby, we see that he has a chance to become a front-of-line rotation type of guy," Hart said.

Walden, the former Angels' All-Star closer in 2011, is under team control through 2016. He was 0-2 with a 2.88 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and three saves in 58 appearances for Atlanta last season.

Jenkins is a former top-100 prospect whose career has been slowed by a shoulder injury he sustained in 2013. He returned to action in 2014, going 6-5 with a 3.28 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 13 starts at high Class A.
