| Madison Bumgarner suffers first loss |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/7/13) Giants starter Madison Bumgarner didn't have his best stuff at home Monday against Philadelphia.
The 23-year-old struck out seven over six innings and 100 pitches, but gave up three runs in the second, two in the fifth and as his offense couldn't get much going against Cliff Lee.
Bumgarner (3-1) allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks. His ERA is 2.31 after his first outing of the season in which he gave up more than two runs.
Bumgarner has 43 Ks over 46 2/3 innings but hasn't won since April 13 in Chicago. He'll look to find that elusive fourth victory when he next starts Saturday against Atlanta.

| Madison Bumgarner should keep rolling |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (5/4/13) Considering he is currently started in 87 percent of CBSSports.com Fantasy leagues, you don't need me to tell you Madison Bumgarner is a must-start Fantasy option. If you haven't been starting Bumgarner all year, the only excuse is that you have forgotten to set your lineup -- every week.
Week 6 (May 6-12) should be more of the same for Bumgarner, who starts twice in the week, both times at the Giants' home park. Keep him active in all Fantasy formats, and expect big things.
Bumgarner is 3-0 with a 1.55 ERA in six starts, with an 0.84 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 40 2/3 innings.

| While Madison Bumgarner didn't exactly break new ground last season, he didn't need to, as he had already established himself as a top-flight starter in his first two seasons in the Giants' rotation. Then again, if the season had ended in the middle of August, Bumgarner would have finished with decidedly better stats than he had in 2011. After making his 25th start on August 20, Bumgarner was 14-7 with a 2.83 ERA, walking a mere 1.7 batters per nine innings, as compared to the 13-13 record, 3.21 ERA and 2.0 BB/9 he registered the previous season. Then over his final seven starts, Bumgarner struggled to find the strike zone, as he walked 17 batters over 36 2/3 innings, going 2-4 with a 5.89 ERA. While he didn't have a great postseason, Bumgarner did a better job of throwing strikes, so Fantasy owners shouldn't worry about his control issues carrying over into this season. Owners can safely view the lefty as a top 20 starting pitcher. And if he has a true breakout in 2013, he could wind up being the ace of many Fantasy staffs. (Updated 12/7/12) |
