Brewers' Ryan Braun bats leadoff for first time in career
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(4:07 pm ET) Brewers right fielder Ryan Braun was slotted in the leadoff position in the team's starting lineup on Saturday, the first time in his career he's batted leadoff.
The Brewers' lineup had other major changes on Saturday. Martin Maldonado will bat seventh and catch, in just his fourth game of 2015. Regular catcher Jonathan Lucroy replaces Adam Lind at first base.
Hector Gomez gets the start at second base, batting sixth. He replaces Scooter Gennett.
Logan Schaefer is in center field, batting eighth. It will be his first start of the season.
Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy trying to turnaround slow start
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(4/15/15) Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy is working to find a rhythm at the plate early in the season, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The catcher isn't panicking, but it doesn't mean he hasn't dealt with his issues to begin the year.
"I'm not frustrated at all," said Lucroy. "I'm pissed off but I'm not frustrated. I know I'm better. But by getting mad, it drives me to get better, which I will."
Lucroy is hitting just .087 in 23 at-bats to begin the season.
"I can look at my video and I know what I'm doing wrong. I can fix myself by looking at it," he said. "It's a timing thing. I'm swinging at strikes; I'm just missing pitches.
"When I go back and watch the video, there are a lot of key points I look at like with my swing and stance, my hands. But mostly it's timing. When you're on time, everything else clicks. When you're late (starting your swing), it messes you up."
Brewers' Lucroy, Gennett not in starting lineup Sunday
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(4/12/15) Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy and second baseman Scooter Gennett are not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates.
Lucroy is getting a break from starting Sunday after opening the season just 1 for 20, and Martin Maldonado will take his spot behind the plate. Manager Ron Roenicke said he isn't worried about Lucroy's slow start, the Journal Sentinel reports.
"Luc has had some good at-bats," Roenicke said Sunday. "He stayed on a breaking ball and hit a bullet to second yesterday. The day before he lined out to short. So he’s had some good at-bats. The first couple days he was lost, then he started swinging the bat again. I like what he’s doing."
With Lucroy out of the lineup, Jean Segura will move to the No. 2 slot, and the manager indicated that Segura's early-season performance made his choice for the spot easy.
"The way he’s been swinging it, yeah," Roenicke said. "Other than that, I don’t what I would have done. Sometimes you slip in a Khris Davis or somebody else. But Seggy, the way he’s swinging, he’s perfect."
Gennett is out of the lineup for the second straight game after getting ejected Friday for slamming his bat to the ground on a called strike three when the team had no backup infielders on the bench. Hector Gomez will get a second straight start at second base after going 2 for 3 Saturday.
The Brewers are favorites (-120) against the Pirates Sunday.
Brewers C Jonathan Lucroy dominating after return from injury
|by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com|
|(4/3/15) Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy kept his hitting streak alive on Friday with a double against the Indians on Friday, reports MLB.com. Lucroy has now extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
After missing time due to a strained right hamstring, Lucroy has left the injury behind him.
"I told you I would be OK. I think as long as I stay on top of it and keep my stolen bags down, I'll be healthy all year," Lucroy joked. "Are you going to write that? Please write that."
Lucroy went 1 for 4 with a double on Friday. Over his 14 Cactus League games he's hitting .419 with four homeruns and three doubles.
Lucroy led the Major Leagues in doubles last season and finished fourth in National League Most Valuable Player voting.
"Just thinking about 'Luc,' when you bring it up, I forget [the injury]," manager Ron Roenicke said. "He's been catching for a while and he's swung the bat so well, it doesn't enter my mind that he missed the first two weeks [of games]. It doesn't even come into play."
"Honestly, it's probably a good thing that I missed a couple of weeks taking it easy," Lucroy said. "I'm already over Spring Training right now, because I think it goes too long. It's almost a blessing in disguise, because I have a week or two less mileage on me.
"Maybe next year I'll come in and say, 'Let's do it this way again.'"
|2014 summary: Already considered one of the top catchers in Fantasy, Jonathan Lucroy took it to another level in 2014, not only getting his batting average back over .300 after a dip in 2013 but also more than doubling his career high with 53 doubles, a record for a catcher. He finished as the top catcher in Head-to-Head points leagues, and even in Rotisserie, where doubles don't count for anything, he was second.|
Playing time status: The Brewers are motivated to keep Lucroy's bat in the lineup, giving him occasional starts at first base. His numbers slipped a little in the second half, but that may have been due to him wearing down over the course of 585 at-bats, also tops among catchers.
2015 outlook: After three consecutive seasons of elite-level production, Lucroy's value to Fantasy owners should be pretty clear by now. You'll find catchers who hit more home runs, but Lucroy's more well-rounded skill set gives him a clear edge in the rankings. Buster Posey is about the only catcher you might consider drafting ahead of him, making Lucroy worth targeting as early as Round 4 in mixed leagues.
