Reds' Devin Mesoraco: Rehab progress report

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(11/7/16) Mesoraco (hip, shoulder) will begin catching drills in mid-to-late January.

The Reds fully expect Mesoraco to spend the season behind the plate, rather than moving him to a corner outfield spot. However, it wouldn't be a surprise if he carried less of a workload than was expected prior to his injuries, given both his injury history and the development of Tucker Barnhart. This is all offseason speculation of course - let's see how he does with actual catching activity before locking in any estimate of playing time.

Reds' Devin Mesoraco: Activated from disabled list Thursday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/27/16) Mesoraco (hip, shoulder) was activated from the disabled list Thursday.

Mesoraco's 2016 season was one to forget, as he went 7-for-50 (.140) over 16 games before missing the remainder of the year with injuries. However, he'll have another chance to play at catcher this coming season and try to display the promise he did in 2014, when he hit .273/.359/.534.

Reds' Devin Mesoraco: Expected to catch in 2017

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/22/16) The Reds plan to have Mesoraco (shoulder) back behind the plate next season.

Following a breakout campaign in 2014, Mesoraco has combined to play in just 39 games over the past two seasons as he's required significant surgery on both hip and his left shoulder. He is expected to be ready to resume catching duties in mid-to-late January and Mesoraco is still just 28, but there are doubts about his ability to hold up to the rigors of catching duties. Tucker Barnhart took for Mesoraco in 2016 and filled in capably behind the dish, but did little of note with the bat.

Reds' Devin Mesoraco: Undergoes surgery Monday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/18/16) Mesoraco underwent surgery to repair a labrum in his right hip Monday.

Dr. Bryan Kelly performed the surgery and the Reds expect that Mesoraco will begin catching drills sometime in mid-to-late January. The 28-year-old will end the season with a career low .140/.218/.160 line and since hitting .273/.359/.534 with 25 home runs and 80 RBI in 2014, Mesoraco has only played in 39 games over two seasons and failed to hit a home run while recording just three RBI over that stretch. He will now focus on his recovery and prepare for the 2017 season.

Reds' Devin Mesoraco: Undergoes surgery Tuesday, out six months

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/10/16) Mesoraco (shoulder) underwent surgery Tuesday and manager Bryan Price said that the damage was worse than initially thought, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. He's expected to miss six months.

This is disheartening news for the promising young catcher as Tuesday's announcement from Price suggests that Mesoraco will have his season cut short for a second straight year. Mesoraco had surgery Tuesday to repair the torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, and Price told reporters that his timetable to return has been pushed back to a six-month window, which would end his season if he follows on that timeline. Tucker Barnhart and Jordan Pacheco figure to handle most of the catching duties for the remainder of the season with Mesoraco sidelined.
