Reds finally place C Devin Mesoraco (hip) on DL

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/25/15) The hip issue that has prevented Reds C Devin Mesoraco from playing since last Wednesday now has him on the 15-day disabled list, the Cincinnati Enquirer has reported.

Mesoraco is dealing with a left hip impingement. The Reds had put off the move in hopes that he could pinch-hit and eventually get back behind the plate.

The loss is another blow to a Cincinnati team that has lost eight in a row. Mesoraco, who emerged as one of the premier hitting catchers in the big leagues last season, was off to a poor start in 2015 with a slash line of .178/.275/.244. He has no home runs, two runs scored and a mere two RBI in 45 at-bats.

Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco suffers setback with hip injury

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/23/15) Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco suffered a setback with the impingement in his left hip, leaving his status for the rest of the season in jeopardy, per MLB.com. Mesoraco, who has not been able to catch in a game since April 12, has been limited to pinch-hitting or designated-hitter duty.

He was initially optimistic after testing his hip by doing some crouching Tuesday in Kansas City. However, he tried squatting 15 times and giving signs on Friday, and that didn't go as well.

"In Kansas City, it went OK. But afterwards it started feeling like it did at the beginning. [Friday] we went out there and I had a hard time getting through what I was supposed to do," Mesoraco said. "It didn't go very well."

Mesoraco was expected to DH in all five games in AL parks this week. But after playing in both games at Kansas City, he wasn't in the lineup Friday or Saturday at Cleveland and might not be in the lineup for the foreseeable future.

"I think he'll be available to pinch-hit, but I don't think at this point in time, he'll be ready to be even a four or five at-bat designated hitter today and tomorrow," manager Bryan Price said. "I just don't think we're going to see a lot of Devin here in the days and weeks to come.

"The decision to be made by Devin and the club is pending so I'd rather not say what the next course of action is. I don't anticipate him being able to influence our club as a regular player any time soon."

Mesoraco, who might need surgery, said he plans to go over his options with the medical staff after the current road trip.

"I certainly haven't been able to do a whole lot this year to help the team," he saiid. "That's definitely been very tough for me. I expected to come in, hit in the middle of the lineup, catch every day and it hasn't worked out like that."

Devin Mesoraco (hip) not in Reds' starting lineup at Cleveland

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/22/15) Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco was not included in the starting lineup for Friday's contest against Cleveland.

Mesoraco has been limited to DH duties because of left hip impingement he suffered in early April. He has appeared in the last two games, and only four games since April 11. He has been taking part in catching drills recently and should be cleared to catch a bullpen session over the weekend.

Mesoraco is hitting .178 (8 for 45) with a double, a triple and two RBI this season.

Cincinnati is an underdog (+145) at Cleveland, per VegasInsider.com.

Reds' Devin Mesoraco does catching drills

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(5/19/15) Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco was able to do catching drills before Tuesday's game. Mesoraco suffered a left hip impingement in early April and hasn't played catcher since.

Mesoraco said he was able to get into a catcher's squat about 15 times, per MLB.com. He also simulated throwing to second base, at 20 percent effort, about 15 times.

At least I know I can get into squat position, which I hadn't done for 30-something days," Mesoraco said. "It's good. Definitely baby steps. We're not going to go crazy because those muscles haven't been used. It's going to be a slow process."

Mesoraco hopes to catch a bullpen session this weekend.

Reds' Devin Mesoraco in lineup Tuesday as DH vs. Royals

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/19/15) Devin Mesoraco is in the Reds' starting lineup on Tuesday against the Royals. As expected, with the team in an American League ballpark, Mesoraco will have the chance to be the designated hitter.

Mesoraco is batting eighth in the order for manager Bryan Price. He has been limited to pinch-hit and DH duties for most of the season due to a hip impingement. He has just six hits in 39 at-bats this season.

Price said that Mesoraco will do some catching activities on Tuesday, as he hopes to have him back behind the plate in the near future.
