Rangers' Andrew Cashner: Struggles in loss to Red Sox

by RotoWire Staff | Special to
(5/23/17) Cashner (1-4) allowed five runs on six hits and four walks across five innings during Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox. He struck out two.

Cashner consistently played with fire in this one, loading the bases with no outs on two occasions as he allowed more than two earned runs for the first time since his first start of the season. He entered the night with a shiny 2.45 ERA, but his 1.41 WHIP and dismal 21:25 K:BB ratio suggest that a sizable correction could be on the way in that category. Despite what his ratios suggest, Cashner had still managed to string together four consecutive quality starts prior to this rough outing and will look to get back on track Sunday against the Blue Jays.

Rangers' Andrew Cashner: Finally gets first win Wednesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to
(5/18/17) Cashner (1-3) gave up two runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings in Wednesday's 9-3 win over the Phillies. He struck out two.

The Rangers turned three double plays behind him, and Cashner took a shutout into the seventh inning before Michael Saunders ruined the party with a two-run homer. The 30-year-old righty has now delivered quality starts in five of his last six trips to the mound, and while Cashner's 91.9 mph average fastball and 4.2 K/9 are shadows of the numbers he put up in his Padres heyday, he's finding a way to produce results with his diminished raw stuff. He'll face a tough test Tuesday on the road against the Red Sox.

Rangers' Andrew Cashner: Tosses quality start in no-decision

by RotoWire Staff | Special to
(5/12/17) Cashner went six innings Friday in a win over Oakland, allowing one earned run on five hits and a walk. He struck out two and received a no-decision.

Cashner kept the A's bats quiet in this one, but was unable to notch his first win of the season as the Texas offense didn't wake up until the ninth inning. He lowered his ERA to an impressive 2.43, but that figure doesn't necessarily fall in line with his peripherals, as a 16:20 K:BB and 5.15 FIP are quite alarming. His next start will come Thursday at home against Philadelphia.

Rangers' Andrew Cashner: Posts quality start in no-decision

by RotoWire Staff | Special to
(5/7/17) Cashner allowed just one run on four hits while walking three and striking out five over six innings for a no-decision in Sunday's 4-3 loss to Seattle.

Cashner has still yet to win since September of 2016, but this was easily his finest of five starts in 2017. He managed to drop his ERA to 2.63 in the process, and the five strikeouts were a season high. However, the right-hander has walked at least three in each of his outings, and his mediocre K/9 of 4.9 and xFIP of 5.82 should warn owners not to expect anything better in the future. Cashner is a risky streaming option in deeper leagues, at best.

Rangers' Andrew Cashner: Still winless after four starts

by RotoWire Staff | Special to
(5/1/17) Cashner (0-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits while walking three and striking out two over six innings in Monday's 6-2 loss to Houston.

Cashner has not won a game in the big leagues since September of 2016. His ERA slightly rose to 2.95 with the 86-pitch effort, but his 6.40 xFIP and absurdly high 80.1 percent strand rate say that he's been very fortunate. It's never good when a pitcher has more walks (16) than strikeouts (10) in 21.1 innings to begin the year. If Cashner continues toeing this dangerous line, he's due for a blowup eventually. Be extremely cautious with how you deploy him in AL-only leagues.
