Red Sox pitcher Wade Miley earns first win of the year Tuesday
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(4/21/15) Red Sox pitcher Wade Miley tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings in Boston's 1-0 win over the Rays Tuesday. Miley scattered three hits with four walks and three strikeouts in his outing.
He ran into a jam in the sixth after walking two consecutive batters to load the bases for Desmond Jennings with two outs before getting the hook. Alexi Ogando came on and finished off the inning, getting Jennings to groundout to short.
Miley, now 1-1 on the year, lowered his ERA to 6.08 in three starts. He will look to keep rolling Sunday against the Orioles.
Red Sox lefty Wade Miley: I 'wasn't very good' Wednesday
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(4/16/15) Red Sox left-hander Wade Miley put in his nomination for Understatement of the Year after his performance Wednesday against Washington.
"Really the whole outing wasn't very good," he told the Boston Herald.
Uh, yeah. Miley gave up seven earned runs in 2 1/3 innings in taking the loss. He gave up a cycle in the process, including two doubles, one triple and a home run.
"I never established the strike zone," he added. "I got behind in a lot of counts. ... I threw too many (sliders). I probably should have gotten away from that pitch sooner and I didn't. I kept trying to find it and kept trying to find it. They were just tattooing them. Overall it's just one of those outings you want to put behind you."
John Farrell wasn't ready to put it behind him. He criticized not only Miley, but the performance of other Red Sox starters recently.
"We have the capability from a starting standpoint to keep a game under control, and that needs to be more consistent than this turn through the rotation," Farrell said. "We have the capability of doing it. We've shown it. There's a track record of that being done."
Red Sox LHP Miley clobbered Wednesday by Nationals
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(4/15/15) Nobody will be calling Wade Miley "Smiley Wiley" in the next day or so if his Wednesday start against Washington is any indication.
The Red Sox lefty was mashed for seven earned runs in just 2 1/3 innings in taking the loss for his first decision of the season. Seven of the eight baserunners he allowed scored.
Miley yielded big hits along the way, including doubles to Bryce Harper and Wilson Ramos, triple to Ryan Zimmerman and homer to Ian Desmond.
After allowing his ERA to soar to 10.57, he will attempt to keep the big hits to a minimum next Tuesday at Tampa Bay.

Farrell indicates that Wade Miley will pitch Red Sox's fourth game
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(4/1/15) Red Sox manager John Farrell indicated that Wade Miley will be his starter for Boston's fourth regular season game on Friday against the Yankees in New York, according to the Providence Journal.
Although it appears as if Justin Masterson is Boston's third starter, Farrell has not confirmed his pitcher for Thursday's game against the Phillies.
|2014 summary: Wade Miley took to throwing his slider more often in 2014, and that made him a better strikeout pitcher, but overall he was less valuable than he had been in either of his previous two seasons with the Diamondbacks. At least in his starts at Chase Field, Miley could not avoid extra base hits, allowing opponents to slug .483 against him. On the road, that mark shrunk to .342, and correspondingly, his ERA was just 3.17, as opposed to his 5.61 home ERA. Overall, Miley went 8-12 with a 4.34 ERA. This offseason, he was traded to the Red Sox in a four-player deal.|
Playing time status: Miley has made 33 starts and 200-plus innings in back-to-back seasons, and he has a good chance to add to the streaks in his first year in Boston.
2015 outlook: The long ball was a problem for Miley in Arizona, but now that he will call Fenway Park home, his home run rate should normalize. Then again, Fenway is a tough place to prevent hits on balls in play, so don't look for too much improvement in Miley's ERA or WHIP. Though he is due for at least a mild rebound, Miley is still best saved for deeper mixed leagues and AL-only formats.
