Red Sox land Wade Miley in four-player deal with Diamondbacks
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(12/12/14) The Red Sox and Diamondbacks completed a trade Friday, with pitcher Wade Miley heading to Boston in exchange for pitchers Allen Webster and Rubby De La Rosa as well as infielder Raymel Flores .
The deal was one of two trades announced by the Diamondbacks between the two teams Friday. The Diamondbacks announced that pitcher Eury De La Rosa was designated for assignment in a related move.
Miley, 28, went 8-12 with a 4.34 ERA and 183:75 K:BB ratio in 201 1/3 innings in 2014. He's set to reach free agency after the 2017 season but will slide into Boston's new-look rotation for 2015.
Webster went 5-3 with a 5.03 ERA and 36:28 K:BB ratio in 59 innings over 11 starts with the Red Sox in 2014 while delivering a 3.10 ERA and 100:44 K:BB ratio in 122 innings with Triple-A Pawtucket. Webster was the No. 88 prospect in baseball before the 2014 season, according to Baseball America, and landed in the top 50 of the same list prior to the 2013 season.
De La Rosa made 18 starts and one relief appearance with the Red Sox in 2014, going 4-8 with a 4.43 ERA and 74:35 K:BB ratio in 101 2/3 innings. He also made 12 starts in Triple-A last season, posting a 3.45 ERA and 57:25 K:BB ratio in 60 innings.
Flores turned 20 years old in September and has spent three seasons in the Red Sox minor-league system. He hit .282/.344/.354 with one home run, 12 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 206 at-bats with low Class A Lowell in 2014.
Wade Miley heading to Red Sox
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(12/12/14) The trade sending Diamondbacks pitcher Wade Miley to the Red Sox has been completed, CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman reports.
The Red Sox have yet to announce the particulars of the deal, but the Diamondbacks are expected to receive pitchers Allen Webster and Rubby De La Rosa as well as an additional minor-league player in exchange for the 28-year-old pitcher. Miley went 8-12 with a 4.34 ERA and 183:75 K:BB ratio in 201 1/3 innings in 2014.
Boston to acquire Wade Miley from Diamondbacks
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(12/10/14) The Red Sox Sox are set to acquire Diamondbacks pitcher Wade Miley, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman confirms. The trade was first reported by FoxSports.com.
The two sides had been rumored to have been in contact about Miley throughout the day, but it was starting to look as though Boston was no longer the front-runner. The 28-year-old Miley posted a 4.34 ERA over 201 1/3 innings last season. Miley is under team control through 2017.
In exchange for Miley, Boston is giving up pitchers Allen Webster and Rubby De La Rosa. De La Rosa posted a 4.43 ERA over 101 2/3 innings last year. He's not set to become a free-agent until 2019. The 24-year-old Webster received 11 starts in the majors last year, posting a 5.03 ERA. Boston will also send make a minor-leaguer in the deal.
|2014 summary: Wade Miley took to throwing his slider more often in 2014, and that made him a better strikeout pitcher, but overall he was less valuable than he had been in either of his previous two seasons with the Diamondbacks. At least in his starts at Chase Field, Miley could not avoid extra base hits, allowing opponents to slug .483 against him. On the road, that mark shrunk to .342, and correspondingly, his ERA was just 3.17, as opposed to his 5.61 home ERA. Overall, Miley went 8-12 with a 4.34 ERA. This offseason, he was traded to the Red Sox in a four-player deal.|
Playing time status: Miley has made 33 starts and 200-plus innings in back-to-back seasons, and he has a good chance to add to the streaks in his first year in Boston.
2015 outlook: The long ball was a problem for Miley in Arizona, but now that he will call Fenway Park home, his home run rate should normalize. Then again, Fenway is a tough place to prevent hits on balls in play, so don't look for too much improvement in Miley's ERA or WHIP. Though he is due for at least a mild rebound, Miley is still best saved for deeper mixed leagues and AL-only formats.
