Braves P Craig Kimbrel picks off runner against Mets

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3/11/15) Braves closer Craig Kimbrel executed a perfect pick-off play in Tuesday's game against the Mets.

In the seventh inning, Kimbrel caught Mets outfielder Cesar Puello straying from first and picked him off. Kimbrel has never been known as someone to execute the pick-off play. He's only picked off one runner during the regular season.

"The pickoff was nice, I don't think I've done that in three or four years," Kimbrel said.

Braves' Kimbrel throws changeup in spring to help with mechanics

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/27/15) When news spread Thursday that Braves closer Craig Kimbrel was throwing changeups during batting practice, it generated some buzz before manager Fredi Gonzalez indicated it probably wouldn't be a pitch that makes it into Kimbrel's in-season repertoire.

It seems Kimbrel indicated as much Friday, saying throwing the changeup in spring training offers him a way to improve his mechanics and avoid putting too much early strain on his arm with an overabundance of curveballs.

"It does help me with extension and getting through my pitches," Kimbrel said, per MLB.com. "That's really the main reason I throw it. Plus, I don't want to go out there and flip off breaking balls over and over again until my arm is ready to do it. So why not throw a changeup?"

Braves' Kimbrel adds changeup to repertoire, might not use it in games

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/26/15) Braves closer Craig Kimbrel has risen to the status of one of the elite closers in the majors behind his devastating fastball-combo slider. However, during live batting practice Thursday, he showcased another potential pitch for his repertoire -- a changeup.

Although, manager Fredi Gonzalez isn't sure Kimbrel will throw the changeup when the Braves starting playing in games, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“Chris Johnson told me he threw a couple of changeups,” Gonzalez said. “He’s probably just playing with it. Add a third pitch if he has to. I don’t know how much he’ll use it when the games start.”

Braves have no interest in trading All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/15/15) While the Braves have been aggressive this offseason reshaping their roster, which included trades of Jason Heyward, Justin Upton and Evan Gattis, one player not on the move is All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel, Braves president of baseball operations John Hart told MLB.com.

"We love our core group," Hart said. "We have added quality players around this group to allow us to compete while strengthening the farm system. We’ve added (Nick) Markakis, (Jason) Grilli, (Jim) Johnson, A.J. (Pierzynski) and others to help us compete this year. We have never entertained trading (Kimbrel) and have had zero conversations with any clubs about Craig. I want him finishing out a World Series win."

Kimbrel, who was NL Rookie of the Year in 2011, was an All-Star for a fourth straight season in 2014. While he was 0-3 last season, he posted a 1.61 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 47 saves in 54 appearances. He is 15-10 with a 1.43 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in five MLB seasons. He has had at least 42 saves the last four seasons.
