| Matt Holliday swats grand slam in extras |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (6/10/13) Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday came through big for his club in the late stages of Sunday's game against the Reds.
Holliday capped a seven-run, 10th inning with a grand slam off reliever Cutis Partch. He also added a double and finished 2 for 4 with two walks, two runs scored and four RBI in an 11-4 victory. He has homered twice in his last four games and is hitting .407 (11 for 27) with seven RBI in his last seven games played.

| Turnaround beginning for Matt Holliday |
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer (6/7/13) Though not on the Josh Hamilton or Jason Heyward level, the Cardinals' Matt Holliday has been one of the more disappointing hitters in Fantasy this season, as his batting average hovers around the .250 mark.
But with another home run Thursday -- his third in nine games -- he's showing signs of a turnaround.
The concerns with him were overblown to begin with. At age 33, he's at the point in his career where a decline is certainly possible, but I don't think that's the case here. I'd worry if he was still striking out at the rate he did last year, which was his worst since his rookie season, But he's back to less than one every six at-bats -- a stellar ratio for a power hitter and a strong indication that his bat is as quick as ever.
Looking at all his peripherals, I'm confident Holliday will rank among the top 12 outfielders at season's end, as he always does. If you're looking to buy low on him, it's now or never.

| Matt Holliday belts ninth home run |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (6/7/13) Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday enjoyed a productive night at the plate Thursday against the Diamondbacks.
Holliday launched a two-run home run in the first inning and singled in the third. He finished 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI in a 12-8 victory. He is hitting .256/.347/.435 with nine homers and 33 RBI in 55 games.

| Cards may move Matt Holliday out of No. 3 spot |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (6/4/13) Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he has discussed moving outfielder Matt Holliday out of the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
Holliday has hit third in all 52 games played this season. He is hitting .245/.335/.413 with eight home runs and 30 RBI. He is hitting .121 (4 for 33) with two home runs in his last nine games played.
"We've talked about it. I've talked to Matt (Holliday)," Matheny said. "He says he'll do what is best for the team. We've got a team that is doing OK. It's not necessarily time to start drawing things up differently. That's something that we have talked about, something that we may consider, have considered and may implement. Right now the offense is producing and we've got guys doing a pretty good job. When you start messing with one person you’re going to have to mess with multiple persons. You put someone in a spot where maybe it doesn't click as well for them. We've got a lot of guys doing a pretty good job."

| For the first two-thirds of 2012, the general consensus on Matt Holliday was that he's as studly as ever. After all, he had a 43-game stretch during the summer in which he hit .410 with 11 home runs over 161 at-bats, bringing his batting average up to a season-high .324 on Aug. 5. But of course, the season didn't end on Aug. 5. It continued for 52 more games, during which Holliday hit .237 with six home runs in 198 at-bats. So now, Holliday's performance leaves a little more room for interpretation. On the one hand, he once again ranked among the top outfielders in Fantasy, producing his usual high batting average and 20-plus homers despite having to contend with a lower back issue in September. On the other hand, he's 33, so perhaps that back issue is a sign of things to come. His 132 strikeouts -- a career high and a significant step back from his previous four seasons -- also suggest he's beginning his decline. He has a long way to go, of course, so don't let some late-season slump prevent you from drafting him as a top-10 outfielder. Just understand that Holliday is getting to the point in his career where he's no longer a rock-solid pick in the second or third round. (Updated 11/30/12) |
