Cardinals' Matt Holliday: Sheds cast, now in splint

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(8/23/16) Holliday has shed his cast and is now wearing a splint on his thumb, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Less than a week removed from undergoing surgery to repair his fractured thumb, Holliday has started the rehab process at the Cardinals' spring training complex in Jupiter, Florida. He is currently limited to finger movement/range-of-motion activities, but Holliday seems to have every intention of returning this year and that should be realistic barring a setback.

Cardinals' Matt Holliday: Will undergo surgery on fractured thumb

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(8/16/16) Holliday will have surgery to repair his fractured thumb Wednesday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

A timeframe for Holliday's rehab and eventual return should be known soon after the surgery is performed. During his absence, Tommy Pham and Brandon Moss will likely continue to share time in left field.

Cardinals' Matt Holliday: Sees hand specialist, decision on tap

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(8/15/16) Holliday (thumb) visited a hand specialist Monday and a decision on the next step with his injury should be announced by the team Tuesday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

Holliday was moved to the disabled list Saturday, and it sounds as though surgery on the broken thumb may be an option for him. A clearer timetable may arise as a result of Tuesday's announcement.

Cardinals' Matt Holliday: Placed on DL

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(8/13/16) Holliday (thumb) was officially placed on the disabled list Saturday

Holliday took a pitch off the hand in Thursday's game and sustained a broken thumb, which figures to keep him out for close to a month, at the minimum. He'll meet with a specialist on Monday to determine whether or not surgery is necessary, and if it is, the rest of Holliday's season could be in jeopardy. For now, Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk will handle most of the work at the corner outfield spots, though Holliday's injury could prompt the team to make an acquisition. St. Louis officially recalled right-hander Luke Weaver on Saturday to fill Holliday's roster spot.

Cardinals' Matt Holliday: To see specialist Monday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(8/12/16) Holliday, who will officially be placed on the 15-day DL on Saturday with a fractured right thumb, is scheduled to see a hand specialist Monday, at which point the Cardinals will determine whether he needs surgery, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.

He was hit by a pitch in Thursday's game, suffering a broken thumb, and is out indefinitely while the team decides what the next course of action will be. If he needs surgery, he would likely miss most, if not all of the remainder of the season. If rest is prescribed, he could return sooner, although the thumb could still affect his productiveness at the plate. The Cardinals are rumored to be interested in bringing Carlos Gomez into the fold, which would signify that they are making plans to be without Holliday for an extended period of time. For now, Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk will probably see the bulk of the time in the outfield corners, although Grichuk's time could be a little unpredictable, given the team's other options on the active roster.
