Diamondbacks dump J.J. Putz
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(6/27/14) Former closer J.J. Putz has been released by the Diamondbacks, who he criticized for designating him for assignment. He is a free agent.
The 37-year-old Putz, who is still owed $7 million by Arizona, had been getting clobbered recently. He has yielded six runs on 11 hits in his last four innings. His ERA skyrocketed from 1.17 to 6.59 since April 21.

|(6/20/14) Veteran reliever J.J. Putz has declined a minor league assignment from the Diamondbacks and will seek employment elsewhere. But he expressed appreciation for the Arizona organization before leaving, the team website has reported.
Putz, who was designated for assignment Friday, has struggled a bit since his fine seasons with Arizona in 2011 and 2012. But he has been a complete mess in 2014 with a 6.59 ERA. He had given up nine earned runs on 14 hits in his last six innings pitched.

Diamondbacks activate J.J. Putz from disabled list

|(6/9/14) The Diamondbacks activated pitcher J.J. Putz from the 15-day disabled list Monday.
Out since May 3, Putz was expected to throw a simulated game Monday before returning; the team must have been satisfied with his recovery from a forearm injury. He owns a 5.40 ERA and 12:6 K:BB ratio in 10 innings over 13 appearances.
|J.J. Putz entered 2013 as a top-10 Fantasy reliever. Sadly, he didn't finish the season with the same distinction. Putz got off to a rocky start, suffering a blown save in four of his first nine save appearances. He would eventually land on the disabled list in early May with an elbow strain, which cost him his closer's job. Upon his return in late June, Putz settled into a setup role. Heath Bell took over as the team's closer until Brad Ziegler unseated him in mid-July. Putz finished 3-1 with a 2.36 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. He also struck out 38 batters in 34 1/3 innings. Putz looked to regain his form after getting past his elbow injury and appeared on track to get another shot at the closer's role in 2014 until Arizona unexpectedly traded for Addison Reed in December. Putz is now expected to open the year as a setup man for Reed. He could be a fallback option for saves, but Putz is best left for Rotisserie leagues and formats that reward for holds.
