Twins' Joe Mauer has aggressive approach, pulling the ball more

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(11:31 am ET) Twins first baseman Joe Mauer has adopted a more aggressive approach at the plate this year. As a result, he's using more of the field, something Mauer has been working on since spring training.

Mauer has pulled more than a third of his hits to right field this season, compared to 22 percent in his career leading up to this year.

"We talked about this in spring training. It's more of a physical thing than anything, just being able to move and being able to get to those pitches," Mauer said, per Fox Sports. "I've always had that approach of trying to spray the field. It's no different this year."

Mauer is swinging earlier in the count this year, which is helping to put pitchers on the defensive.

"For a long time, pitchers just threw strike one to Joe without fear of repercussion," manager Paul Molitor said. "He's causing pause in that regard for opposing pitchers."

Mauer is hitting .302 this year with 13 RBI.

Joe Mauer, Kennys Vargas switch positions for Twins

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(5/3/15) For the fourth time this season, Joe Mauer and Kennys Vargas will switch positions to give Mauer a day off from the field.

Mauer will play designated hitter for the Twins in Sunday's game, while Vargas will play first base. It's the second time in five games and third in the last nine that the two players have flip-flopped positions.

Twins' Joe Mauer totals three hits in win over White Sox

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(4/30/15) Joe Mauer put together another stellar performance from the plate in the Twins' 12-2 win over the White Sox on Thursday.

Mauer went 3 for 5, marking the second consecutive game he's posted three hits. He totaled two RBI, giving him 13 for the season. He also recorded his sixth double of the season and scored a run.

Mauer is now hitting .318/.392/.412.

Twins' Joe Mauer totals 2 RBI in loss to Tigers

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(4/29/15) Joe Mauer had a great day at the plate, going 3 for 5 in the Twins' 10-7 loss to the Tigers on Wednesday.

Mauer totaled two RBI, bringing in one run in the fourth inning on a double and later hitting an RBI single in the fifth. Mauer's double in the fourth was his fifth for the season. Mauer scored two runs as well.

He's now hitting .300/.380/.388.

Twins' Paul Molitor considering Joe Mauer in leadoff role

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(4/25/15) Twins manager Paul Molitor is looking for a spark at the top of the batting order. He thinks that spark may be in his top player, Joe Mauer, according to MLB.com.

"I had him potentially doing that," Molitor said. "I had him also hitting second behind [Brian] Dozier. There were points made regarding Dozier's propensity to be able to score runs last year and Joe hit behind him quite a bit, so we talked about different combinations of how to get those guys in there."

Mauer has never hit lead off in his career.

"You can go to your sabermetrics experts and a lot of times they're going to come up with Joe at the top of the lineup, and I understand that. How that would play in terms of him getting a chance to get hits with men in scoring position and do some other things that he's been doing pretty well, I'm not sure."

Mauer is hitting .271 with five RBI in 59 at-bats this season.
