Ausmus won't guess on return of Tigers DH Victor Martinez
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(5/20/15) Nobody knows for sure when aging designated hitter Victor Martinez will be back in the lineup for the Tigers.
And that includes Brad Ausmus.
Martinez has been placed on the disabled list with a knee problem that has plagued him all season and forced him to struggle against right-handers, against whom he is batting .141 (12-for-85).
"We've got to make sure he's healthy," Ausmus told MLive.com. "I don't know if that'll be two weeks. I don't know if it'll be four weeks - I'd just be throwing darts blindfolded."
Tigers place Victor Martinez (knee) on disabled list

|(5/19/15) The Tigers have placed designated hitter Victor Martinez on the disabled list with left knee inflammation, the team announced on Tuesday.
Martinez aggrevated his knee while trying to beat out a ball at first on Monday and the pain was enough that he will need some time to recover. Martinez is hitting .216 with 15 RBI in 111 at-bats this season. The team will recall Tyler Collins from Triple-A Toledo to fill in the roster spot.
Tigers' Victor Martinez won't abandon switch-hitting
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(5/19/15) Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez is just 12 for 85 against right-handed pitchers while batting lefty, but giving up switch-hitting isn't a consideration for him or the team, MLB.com reports.
"Something that I'm never going to do and I have never done is just going out there and go righty on righty," Martinez said.
Martinez is 7 for 19 with four walks in his career while batting righty against a right-handed pitcher, but all of those at-bats came against knuckleball pitchers. Tracking a right-handed power pitcher from the right side would be a big change for the designated hitter.
"Honestly, I don't know how I'm going to react when the pitcher throws the ball," Martinez said. "I might get out of the way. I've never done it before."
While the idea may have come up among the coaching staff, manager Brad Ausmus isn't willing to force Martinez out of his comfort zone.
"We thought about it, we talked about it and he's not comfortable with it," Ausmus said. "If he's not comfortable with it, obviously we aren't going to be comfortable with it."
Martinez suffered a knee injury on Monday, and his availability for Tuesday's game has yet to be determined.
Tigers DH Victor Martinez injures knee

|(5/18/15) Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez appeared to aggravate his already injured left knee in Monday's game against the Brewers, according to MLB.com.
Following the game, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus hinted that Martinez could head to the disabled list.
"From the looks of things, I think we're going to have to at least talk about other options," Ausmus said. "But we'll do that privately."
Martinez is hitting a slash line of .216/.308/.270 for the season. He went 0 for 4 in a 3-2 loss to the Brewers on Monday
Tigers DH Victor Martinez will continue to switch hit
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(5/18/15) Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez was able to take batting practice on Monday from both sides of the plate, an indication he will continue to switch hit this season, according to MLB.com.
Martinez has struggled at the plate against right-handed pitchers, hitting just .148 with 11 walks and 12 strikeouts. Martinez said he will never give up on switch-hitting.
"You can talk about it all you want," manager Brad Ausmus said, "but I made it pretty clear he wasn't going to do it."
Martinez is 7 for 19 in his career hitting from the right side against right-handed pitchers, but Ausmus doesn't envision him doing that more often anytime soon.
"We'd be asking him to do something he hasn't done [recently]," Ausmus said. "We thought about it, we talked about it and he's not comfortable with it. If he's not comfortable with it, obviously we aren't going to be comfortable with it."
|2014 summary: Victor Martinez's season almost defied explanation, as he broke out for his best performance by far as a 35-year-old. Already a great contact hitter, Martinez took that skill to new heights, as he struck out only 42 times in 561 at-bats. Even more surprising was Martinez's power surge. While he was no slouch batting as a lefty (20 home runs in 418 at-bats), Martinez simply crushed southpaws, slamming 12 homers in 143 at-bats as a righty. Martinez was runner-up in the American League MVP voting, as he batted .335 with 103 RBI and 87 runs scored.|
Playing time status: Martinez underwent surgery on his left knee in early February, but he is not expected to miss much time, if any, at the beginning of the regular season. He may not catch any longer, but he will get close-to-everyday at-bats as the Tigers' designated hitter, and he could spell Miguel Cabrera at first base when the team is playing in National League parks.
2015 outlook: With his 2014 numbers seemingly coming out of nowhere, it's hard to count on a repeat, especially with him coming off surgery. Still, a .320 batting average with 25 home runs is achieveable. That kind of production makes Martinez someone who could be drafted as early as the third round, even if you are also wary of the onset of age-related decline.
