Mariners trying to gauge playing status of Franklin Gutierrez
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(10:59 am ET) Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez is slated to play consecutive spring games Friday and Saturday as the team gauges where he is at after sitting out last season due to health issues, per MLB.com.
“We need to find out what he’s capable of doing,” manager Lloyd McClendon said. “He actually looks pretty good. He’s moving around pretty good, swinging the bat well. We all know he’s a very talented young man. His biggest problem is just staying on the field and we need to find out if he can do that.”
Franklin Gutierrez 'doing fine' in bid to make Mariners

|(2/26/15) Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez said Thursday that he's "doing fine" after missing the 2014 season while dealing with an inflammatory nerve condition called ankylosing spondylitis, MLB.com reports.
"I'm doing fine," Gutierrez said. "After missing a year, I'm very grateful to be back here. I've been here for a long time now. I just want to give it a shot one more time to see if I can do it."
Gutierrez agreed to a minor-league deal with the Mariners and will see where he's at after being invited to spring training. His illness "has a treatment, but not a cure," and he expects to be dealing with it for the remainder of his life.
"We hope that he's healthy and can make it through the camp feeling good about himself and get back to playing baseball," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "There are no big expectations. Do we expect him to be the guy he was two or three years ago? I doubt it. He's been off a long time. He needs to ease himself back into things and it's going to take time. No. 1, we have to make sure he's healthy."
Gutierrez was limited to 81 games in 2012 and 2013 combined due to a virety of injuries, many of which were later attributed to his illness.

|(1/24/15) Mariners assistant general manager Jeff Kingston indicated that free agent outfielder Franklin Gutierrez is still on the team's radar, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. Gutierrez spent the 2014 season on the restricted list due to ongoing gastrointestinal issues.
"He wants to give it a shot," Kingston said. "Full disclosure, there are some veteran non-roster players we're still talking to, and we probably will add a few more here before the start of camp.
"He is somebody we've had some discussions with. So it is a possibility."

|(10/1/14) Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez, who spent the 2014 season on the restricted list due to health reasons, has expressed interest in returning in 2015, according to MLB.com.
"He’s in Florida, working out. He has some interest in coming back next year. We’re going to talk to him and we’ll see what happens," general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "He left in a good frame of mind. We’ll have to see where it’s at, but he’s spoken to our guys more than once about his desire in coming back next year. It would be as a non-roster player."

|(2/13/14) Lingering health issues have motivated veteran outfielder Franklin Gutierrez to inform the Mariners that he's taking the 2014 season off, the Seattle Times has reported.
Gutierrez, who had been dealing with a viral infection in the offseason, has not been a full-time starter since 2010, but he had played for Seattle since 2009. He has never outplayed his reputation as a good-glove, weak-bat performer.
